ATTACK OF THE FIFTY FOOT WOMAN Remake To Be Directed By Tim Burton

attack of the fifty foot woman poster 1958, remake attack of the 50 foot woman

Tim Burton is attached to direct a reimagined telling of Warner Bros.’ sci-fi horror movie classic, Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman. According to Deadline, which broke the news, the project is being written by Gone Girl and Sharp Objects scribe Gillian Flynn.

The 1958 original starred Allison Hayes as a wealthy heiress whose close encounter with an extra-terrestrial triggers her to grow into a giant woman, complicating her rocky marriage with her philandering husband. Burton is reportedly producing Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman alongside Andrew Mittman and Tommy Harper, with Kai Dolbashian as executive producer.

Tim Burton currently has another project with Warner Bros., withs the sequel to his own Beetlejuice coming out September 6th. The title was recently – and fittingly – revealed to be Beetlejuice Beetlejuice 2024 A.D. Let’s hope he doesn’t make it a trilogy, or we might come across some issues with the naming. Flynn, meanwhile, is in the process of adapting her own novel, Dark Places, into a limited series at HBO.

No word yet on who might star in this reimagining of the science fiction classic, nor when the project might make it to screens, but stay tuned for further updates as we hear them!

James Gunn’s DCEU Finds Its Supergirl

house of the dragon star milly alcock cast as kara zor-el aka supergirl in dc universe

Warner Bros.’ Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has found its star in House of the Dragon actress Milly Alcock. Also known as Kara Zor-El, Supergirl is the cousin of Superman, who in Peter Safran and James Gunn’s rebooted DCEU will be played by David Corenswet.

Alcock was reportedly up against Meg Donnelly for the role. The character of Supergirl is expected to appear in one or more DC Studios projects before soaring into her solo adventure, though it’s not yet known whether she’ll feature in the upcoming Superman: Legacy, which starts filming this spring. Ana Nogueira is penning the script for Supergirl, and no director has yet been locked in.

Milly Alcock soared to fame last year as the younger version of Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s House of the Dragon. “Milly is a fantastically talented young actor, and I’m incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU,” Gunn wrote on Instagram. “Yes, I first became aware of her in House of the Dragon but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for #Supergirl. She embodies Kara as envisioned by [comic book writer Tom King, comic book artist Bilquis Evely, and screenwriter Nogueira].”

Woman of Tomorrow is part of Chapter 1 in Gunn and Safran’s DC slate. Also included in this chapter are the Batman feature The Brave and the Bold, and a series starring Viola Davis as her Suicide Squad character Amanda Waller.

Jirel of Joiry Returns in New Edge Sword & Sorcery

Literary history is about to be made as Jirel of Joiry, the first lady of sword and sorcery is set to return in her first new story for 85 years. Written by Molly Tanzer and authorised by the estate of C. L. Moore, the character has an appropriate place within the pages of the latest New Edge Sword and Sorcery Magazine, which has already published boundary-pushing tales that maintain a love and respect for the classics.

New Edge’s third and fourth issues form the basis of a new crowdfunding campaign on Backerkit that offers digital, softcover and hardcover formats, along with some extra treats and other exclusives. Editor Oliver Brackenbury has revealed that there will be a couple of famous names to find within the tables of contents, all to be announced when the campaign goes live at 8am EST on February 15th, 2024. With Michael Moorcock already making an appearance in issue one (with a new Elric story, no less) anticipation levels are already understandably high; based on what Brackenbury has previously curated, genre fans are sure to be satisfied.

Jirel’s story will be twice as long as the others and contain double the usual number of illustrations provided by Saprophial. No less than another seventeen artists will bring their talent and unique styles to the pages, with more to be added as goals are met. On top of that, there’ll be a unique reward for the first backer (you made a note of that time, right?) and something special for all who pledge support within the first 48 hours. A New JURASSIC WORLD Film Is In The Works

new jurassic world film in the works at universal studios, david koepp writing the script

It seems Universal has been developing a new Jurassic World film in some secret lab, because they’ve only just confirmed that an all-new instalment of the dino franchise has not only found its writer, but is deep into development – the studio has even suggested a 2025 release date is possible.

David Koepp, who was the writer of the original 1993 Jurassic Park and its sequel, Jurassic Park: The Lost World, has boarded the untitled project as screenwriter. No director has yet been confirmed, but Jurassic World trilogy helmer Frank Marshall is producing alongside Patrick Crowley. Steven Spielberg is, of course, executive producing via Amblin Entertainment.

Per THR, this next film will be launching a “new Jurassic era”, suggesting that Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard won’t be returning post-2022’s Jurassic World Dominion. The script might be in good shape, but there’s no indication that the feature has yet been cast; though if a 2025 release really is in the books, we should be hearing updates soon. Stay tuned!

As for Koepp, he recently penned Steven Soderbergh’s ghost thriller Presence, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this month. Presence is a haunted tale that follows a family through the eyes of their home’s resident ghost, and stars Lucy Liu.

David Gordon Green Departs THE EXORCIST Reboot Sequel

the exorcist: believer director david gordon green departs sequel, the exorcist: deceiver

The rebooted Exorcist franchise from Universal and Blumhouse has hit another road block, with news that David Gordon Green is departing the project to focus on his production of Nutcrackers starring Ben stiller, and on season 4 of the HBO series The Righteous Gemstones.

Green directed last year’s The Exorcist: Believer, which was a box office flop. He was then attached to direct the reboot’s sequel, titled The Exorcist: Deceiver, which was due to release in cinemas on April 18th, 2025. Universal has since removed the project from its release schedule.

The news of David Gordon Green ‘s departure does not come as a huge surprise, after he cast doubt on his return to the franchise in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Despite having signed on to helm all three films of the rebooted trilogy, he stated: “My intention is just to start making things, and as those plans come together, if I find myself in that [The Exorcist: Deceiver] director’s chair, I’d be thrilled. But right now, I’m navigating it from a story perspective and looking at my realities of life as I pivot.”

For now, the search for a new director for The Exorcist: Deceiver is underway, so stay tuned for updates!

Title And Trailer Revealed For Radio Silence’s Secret Project

alisha weir in abigail trailer from directing team radio silence

The secretive monster movie from Scream and Ready or Not team Radio Silence is finally stepping into the light: Universal revealed that the feature is titled Abigail, and shared the first trailer ahead of its release April 19th.

The studio also revealed the first logline: “After a group of would-be criminals kidnap the 12-year-old ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, all they have to do to collect a $50 million ransom is watch the girl overnight. In an isolated mansion, the captors start to dwindle, one by one, and they discover, to their mounting horror, that they’re locked inside with no normal little girl.”

Previously, all that was hinted about the Radio Silence project was that it would be a reimagining of the 1936 Universal Classic Monsters movie, Dracula’s Daughter. Now, one might assume that means Abigail will be revealed as Dracula’s daughter, but nothing’s been confirmed. She certainly has the teeth for it.

Alisha Weir, who gave a star-making performance in Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical, stars as the titular Abigail. She is joined by Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, Melissa Barrera, William Catlett, Kevin Durand, Giancarlo Esposito, and the late actor Angus Cloud.

Check out the wryly funny, gory trailer for Abigail below:
