Literary history is about to be made as Jirel of Joiry, the first lady of sword and sorcery is set to return in her first new story for 85 years. Written by Molly Tanzer and authorised by the estate of C. L. Moore, the character has an appropriate place within the pages of the latest New Edge Sword and Sorcery Magazine, which has already published boundary-pushing tales that maintain a love and respect for the classics.

New Edge’s third and fourth issues form the basis of a new crowdfunding campaign on Backerkit that offers digital, softcover and hardcover formats, along with some extra treats and other exclusives. Editor Oliver Brackenbury has revealed that there will be a couple of famous names to find within the tables of contents, all to be announced when the campaign goes live at 8am EST on February 15th, 2024. With Michael Moorcock already making an appearance in issue one (with a new Elric story, no less) anticipation levels are already understandably high; based on what Brackenbury has previously curated, genre fans are sure to be satisfied.

Jirel’s story will be twice as long as the others and contain double the usual number of illustrations provided by Saprophial. No less than another seventeen artists will bring their talent and unique styles to the pages, with more to be added as goals are met. On top of that, there’ll be a unique reward for the first backer (you made a note of that time, right?) and something special for all who pledge support within the first 48 hours.
