Josh Lucas | THE BLACK DEMON

josh lucas black demon

With a story that combines the mythology of the Tlāloc and the way some oil companies poorly treat the environment, The Black Demon has splash landed to give viewers a shark movie experience like no other! STARBURST catches up with actor Josh Lucas (Yellowstone) to discuss his character Paul, the environmental depth of the plot, and what it was like to work with director Adrian Grünberg (Rambo: Last Blood)…

STARBURST: With the mythology about the shark, combined with how oil companies cause damage to the environment, what kind of research did you do before working on The Black Demon?

Josh Lucas: Research is often my favourite part of the process. It’s strange. What happened was right around the time of the Trump administration coming into office, they actually did a really interesting thing around the areas of Baja and certain parts of Mexico, where they allowed these small oil rigs to be constructed at high speed, and so that part of the story is actually based in factual truth. They were done without a lot of regulation from any government. So that’s the genesis of the idea, and then the Black Demon itself. The mythology is that the shark has been haunting the waters of Mexico; there’s been writing about it for 100s of years. I don’t want to take anything away from it because there’s definitely mythology or folklore that there’s this giant shark that’s caused a lot of terror, particularly in fishermen’s lives out in Baja and that crazy beautiful area. Some people say that it’s just a whale shark, they have some images of it, but I’ve seen some pretty interesting documentaries where they interview fishermen who are truly terrified, you can see it. So it was kind of an interesting thing to see the truth and put it together with the idea of the oil rig. Make a movie that had some complexity in terms of what it was asking about climate change and politics, and all of that at the same time.

black demon first look

Adrian Grünberg has worked on some really great movies. Could you tell us about what he was like to work with and, maybe, what he wanted to see from your character?

Adrian is a force of nature. I got a call from somebody who I really love and respect in my life and have worked with for a very long time, and they know Adrian. They said, “Hey man, this is a really interesting filmmaker, to say the least.” Because he was a first AD, he worked extensively with people like Peter Weir and, obviously, Mel Gibson multiple times on really epic, complicated projects that were very difficult to shoot. First ADs oftentimes have a much more important role in film-making than people realise, and great film-makers rely on them pretty extensively. I worked with this guy called Adam Somner, who is basically on staff for Spielberg at all times, to look at his movies. I worked with him on Ford V Ferrari, and James Mangold tried to steal them, and I think he has now done a number of films with Mangold. You realise he is really not running the show by any means, but the first AD has such a, oftentimes, they’re directing all of the extras, and they’re directing so much of what’s going on, to help the director out. So I knew that Adrian had this extensive background in film, working with great directors. We just bonded pretty quickly over our love of film and our love of throwing ourselves into it. Trying to do something that, in this case, was very difficult because we were shooting in a tank in the Dominican Republic, had a very limited budget, and didn’t know what the shark was going to be at all. It was way off in the distance in terms of the CGI of it all, and trying to make a movie that was alive in many ways, visually, with such limited resources. He is an electrifying guy to work with. He is one of those guys who is crazy passionate about what he is doing, and he is pushing everybody hard. He is out there himself. He was the first one in the water every day. He is the first one in a diving suit. He is also a really wonderful guy to be around. Then we had an idea of trying to take, the script evolved and changed once Adrian and I really started talking about it, to try and make it have some of the climates, about politics, mythology, all of those different things. Adrian is Mexican, and he very strongly has a deep interest towards the mythology of Tlāloc, and this God that I didn’t know much about, and how prominent it is in Mexican folklore, and to try and bring that into the script. I just genuinely love that guy.

We really enjoyed the scene where you confirm that you’re covering for the oil company, it kind of throws you. What does this twist do for the movie?

The hard thing about the character was that, in a way, he is complicit, or he is guilty from the very beginning, and I think he knows it. That’s one of the things that get into the politics of it, right, the idea that there are people who are involved in these big American corporations who are turning a blind eye to the destruction that they’re doing in other parts of the world. They can get away with it because they don’t see it first-hand. So I think that it was trying to basically know that he had that somewhere inside of him, but that he had justified it. I think characters are always interesting when they, in a way, have a dark hidden secret. He was also a really good dad. He is a good husband. He is not a bad man by any means, and he doesn’t see himself like that, but I think if you’re doing something like what he is doing, he is inherently, like I say, complicit. He deserves to have the karma of whatever would happen in that situation. I think that’s what is so interesting about these big, behemoth American corporations that do that global damage.

The shark in this movie is pretty interesting! It can make you hallucinate to start with. How do you think this particular shark compares to any of the other sharks that have come before it, whether it be Jaws or, more recently, The Meg/The Shallows?

One of the things that Adrian brought to it was the idea of really throwing in the mythology and throwing in the idea that, when you watch the documentaries of these fishermen talking about this shark, there is this strange, dream-like or trance-like fear that they seem to have of this thing. And look, no one has actually ever seen it, right? That’s the other thing about it, so it exists kind of as a boogeyman, or as a monster, and it exists more in these fishermen’s – in the real truthful legend or mythology of it – it exists more in their dreams, or in their fears more than it does in reality. So that’s a really interesting thing. For so many people, obviously, because of Jaws, we terrorise, or mythologise sharks, imagine the amount of energy or fear that’s gone into swimming since the movie Jaws came out, and in reality, as we all know, it’s incredibly rare that you’ll get into trouble with a shark. I think your chances of being eaten by an alligator are much higher! But I do think sharks, in a way, exist more in our minds than they do in reality, as much as the danger of them exists.

The Black Demon is out on digital on June 19th and is released on DVD and Blu-ray from July 17th.

A New LEPRECHAUN Film Is In The Works

warwick davis in leprechaun

Lionsgate is searching for another pot of gold in a new Leprechaun film reimagining. The longest-running franchise in the studio’s history and cult horror series will receive a fresh take with Felipe Vargas (filmmaker of award-winning short film Milk Teeth) in the director’s chair, working from a script by the upcoming Lilo & Stitch scribe Mike Van Waes; Roy Lee will produce through his Vertigo Entertainment banner alongside Miri Yoon.

The first Leprechaun film released in 1993 and starred Warwick Davis as the vengeful titular character. Davis would go on to play the leprechaun in six further films, though he did not reprise the role in 2014’s Leprechaun: Origins nor 2018’s Leprechaun Returns.

“Thirty years after its debut, this franchise still casts a spell, and we’re thrilled to be bringing it back with a new vision,” Erin Westerman, president of production for Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, states. “Roy and Miri are two of our most trusted producers, especially with this genre, and we’re excited by Felipe’s vision for the film as a director. In his hands, this movie should be very scary and a ton of fun.”

As it’s still in the development stages, no official title has been revealed, nor do we yet know who might star as the vindictive gold digger. So, stay tuned for updates!

YELLOWJACKETS Star To Lead Sci-Fi Thriller COMPANION

Yellowjackets star Sophie Thatcher to lead sci-fi thriller Companion

Yellowjackets breakout star Sophie Thatcher has landed the lead role in Companion, a sci-fi thriller from the team behind last year’s horror success Barbarian. She joins a cast that also includes Jack Quaid, Lukas Gage, Megan Suri and Harvey Guillen.

Drew Hancock makes his directorial debut with the feature, which is based on his original script. The plot is being kept secret. Barbarian writer-director Zach Cregger is producing the film alongside BoulderLight Pictures’ Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz, and Vertigo’s Roy Lee. BoulderLight’s Tracy Rosenblum and Vertigo’s Andrew Childs will executive produce. Cregger was initially set to direct Companion, before opting to go ahead with his own script instead, a New Line film titled Weapons.

Sophie Thatcher is best known for playing teenage Natalie in Showtime’s survival drama Yellowjackets, the younger version of the character portrayed by Juliette Lewis. The show recently finished airing its second season. The actress is also currently on screens in 20th Century Studios’ Stephen King adaptation, The Boogeyman, in the lead role of Sadie Harper. Thatcher stars opposite Chris Messina and David Dastmalchian in the horror flick.

THR was the first to announce her casting. The team behind Companion reportedly hope to go into production this summer, though various industry strikes may delay those plans.

THE SMURFS Return to Table Top Gaming

Iconic children’s characters, The Smurfs, are to get their own new and novel table top game as part of the franchise’s 65th anniversary.

The game will be crowd-funded later this year and will be designed by Maestro Media, who specialise in the more unusual end of things; previous games include the sinister Sally Face Strange Nightmares and the warped Binding of Issac: Four Souls.

The Smurfs began as a Belgian comic strip back in 1958 before swiftly becoming one of the world’s largest fantasy franchises. “The Smurfs are one of the most recognisable brands in the world with a long history of licensed products, iconic TV shows, films and more,” said Javon Frazier, Founder and CEO of Maestro Media.

The game, called Smurfs’ Hidden Village, is being designed by renowned game designers Antoine Bauza (Ghost Stories, 7 Wonders), Corentin Lebrat (Draftsaurus, Flying Goblins), Ludovic Maublanc (Dice Town, Cash’ N Guns) and Théo Rivière (Sea of Clouds, Sticky Chameleons) – known collectively as The Kaedama Team – and has you and your friends play as Smurfs who are tasked with rebuilding the mushroom village from scratch following the evil sorcerer Gargamel’s latest scheme. To succeed, you’ll need to work together as a team, collecting resources, building inventions, and locating missing Smurfs to help rebuild mushroom houses. Each Smurf has a unique set of skills that you must use strategically to outsmart Gargamel and his cat Azrael.

It should be a fun, if weird, game. You can find more via smurfshiddenvillage.com.

Watch The Bizarre Trailer For POOR THINGS

emma stone as bella baxter in poor things trailer from yorgos lanthimos

Some weeks after granting us a first look at Emma Stone’s lead character in Poor Things, Searchlight Pictures have released a delightfully off-kilter, official trailer for the upcoming film from beloved The Lobster and The Favourite filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos.

Poor Things is the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe in yet another fiercely fun role and a face-load of prosthetics). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.

Beyond Stone, Dafoe and Ruffalo, the cast also includes Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael, Kathryn Hunter, Margaret Qualley, and Christopher Abbott. Based on Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel of the same name, Poor Things is co-written by Lanthimos and Tony McNamara (who also co-wrote The Favourite, in which Stone starred).

Poor Things will release to UK and US cinemas on September 8th 2023. Watch the first official trailer below:

Zack Snyder’s REBEL MOON Will Be In Two Parts

REBEL MOON. Sofia Boutella stars as Kora, the reluctant hero from a peaceful colony who is about to find she's her people's last hope, in Zack Snyder's REBEL MOON. Cr. Clay Enos/Netflix © 2023

The highly anticipated science fiction project Rebel Moon will be split into two films, writer-director Zack Snyder has revealed.

Rebel Moon tells the story of a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent, Belisarius. Desperate, the colonists dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past (Sofia Boutella) to seek out warriors from neighbouring planets to help them make a stand against the invading forces.

The picture stars Sofia Boutella (SettlersKingsman: The Secret Service), Charlie Hunnam (Pacific RimKing Arthur: Legend of the Sword), Djimon Hounsou (A Quiet Place Part IIThe King’s ManCaptain Marvel), Doona Bae (Sense8, The Host), Ray Fisher (Zack Snyder’s Justice League), Jena Malone (The Neon Demon, The Hunger Games franchise), Rupert Friend (Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Stuart Martin.

“Originally, the script was one movie, but it was in ‘Zack form,’” says his wife and longtime producing partner, Deborah Snyder in an interview with Vanity Fair. “It was 172 pages… [Netflix film boss Scott] Stuber was like, ‘On the service, under-two-hour movies really do better for some reason,’ even though you’ll binge-watch a series of eight episodes. Zack said, ‘If you ask me to make this less than two hours, I’m going to lose all the character. You won’t care about these people. It’s a character story about how people can change, and redemption and what are you willing to fight for…’ So he said, ‘What if I give you two movies?’”

While Rebel Moon Part One will release to Netflix on December 22nd, Zack Snyder hinted that part two would be released “on the heels” of the first.
