Hugh Jackman returns to his signature X-Men role as Wolverine in the upcoming Deadpool 3, as announced by the Merc with a Mouth star Ryan Reynolds. Via the same announcement video, Reynolds revealed the film will release in cinemas on September 6th, 2024.
Reynolds/Deadpool and Jackman/Wolverine’s faux-rivalry has long been a source of amusement for anyone following the actors on social media. From Christmas sweater pranks to gifts left in dressing rooms, their real-life taunting mirrors the two’s in-universe feud.
The pair previously crossed blades in the criminally-bad X-Men Origins: Wolverine, where Reynolds first portrayed Deadpool – but with his mouth sewn shut, a rendition which the Deadpool films have often mocked. Exactly how Wolverine will return is anyone’s guess, given the complicated timeline entanglements between the X-Men franchise, the Deadpool films and the mainline MCU.
Shawn Levy is directing Deadpool 3, which will bring its R rating to the MCU for the very first time. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick return to pen the script, with previous drafts written by Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin.
