Franchise veteran Harrison Ford is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe by way of Captain America: New World Order, taking over the role of General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross from the late actor William Hurt.

Captain America 4 will star Anthony Mackie in his long-time role as Sam Wilson, and will be directed by The Cloverfield Paradox helmer Julius Onah. The film will take place some time after the events of the Marvel and Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which saw Wilson finally embrace the mantle of Captain America left to him by Steve Rogers (Chris Evans).

General Ross is the second character from The Incredible Hulk announced to be returning to the MCU for Captain America: New World Order, after Tim Blake Nelson was confirmed to return as Samuel Sterns, aka The Leader.

Ford would also play General Ross in Thunderbolts, the film about the group of antiheroes of the same name, which will be directed by Jake Schreier and release July 2024.

Hurt appeared as Ross in 2008’s Incredible Hulk and reprised the role in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. He subsequently appeared in Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Black Widow. Hurt sadly passed away earlier this year.

Captain America: New World Order is currently slated for release in May 2024. Until then, Harrison Ford will next be seen reprising his iconic role as the intrepid archaeologist in Indiana Jones 5, due out June 30th, 2023.
