The upcoming fourth instalment of Marvel’s Captain America film franchise will be directed by Nigerian-American filmmaker Julius Onah, it was recently revealed via THR. Onah is best known for having directed the 2018 horror thriller The Cloverfield Paradox.

Anthony Mackie stars in Captain America 4 as Sam Wilson, marking his feature film debut as the next Captain America – this follows the events of the Disney+ series Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which charted Wilson’s identity journey from Falcon and Avenger to accepting the shield and mantle of Captain America, a title previously held by Steve Rogers (Chris Evans).

Sam Wilson set for Captain America 4 feature film

Though unconfirmed, it’s more than likely that the MCU film would also star Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, and Wyatt Russell as John Walker/US Agent/wannabe Captain America. Contrary to many outlets’ speculations, it seems extremely improbable that Evans would reappear as Rogers – and that’s a good thing. Steve’s reign is over, long live Sam Wilson!

Malcolm Spellman, creator and head writer of Falcon and the Winter Soldier, is penning the movie script alongside Dalan Musson, a staff writer on the series. No production start date on Captain America 4 has yet been announced.

Onah more recently wrote and directed the 2019 indie thriller Luce, which starred Naomi Watts, Octavia Spencer, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Tim Roth.
