Sci-Fi London Festival 2021 Launches Programme

Sci-Fi London festival poster

Today the Sci-Fi London Film Festival 2021 launches its 21st annual programme, which will run for seven days between the 19th and 26th of October. It will host 13 (lucky!) features and 50 shorts, alongside its regular classic events such as the 48 hour film challenge and its sci-fi quiz.

Opening this year’s festival is Agata Alexander’s Warningwith its all-star cast including Annabelle Wallis, Thomas Jane, Alex Pettyfer, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Alice Eve, and Rupert Everett. The summary is certainly intriguing: Doomsday is coming. In the near future, a group of disparate individuals contemplates the meaning of life as deadly asteroids hurtle toward Earth.

Sci-Fi London’s closing film will be the world premiere of Moon Heart: M (Haydeé Cáceres) is alone, almost invisible to society – old, poor, homeless and ignored. Her only friend is a lone ant. M’s world is full of nostalgic memories and a dark presence that haunts her, until one day, a ‘mechanical angel’ arrives to help change her life.

Other major film premiere galas will include:

Repeat (dir. Richard Millar): Professor Ryan Moore (Tom England) believes that his new device communicates with those who have ‘passed’. He is obsessed with the project because his daughter, Samantha, has been missing without a trace for months, and he fears the worst. But, in one experiment, it appears he has made contact with Samantha. His grief is awful, but he thinks he has found a way to ‘bring her back’. But will the truth of what happened be even more devastating.

Exposure 36 (dir. Mackenzie G. Maur): Set in New York, three days before the world will end, we meet Cam, a struggling and grieving photographer. Coping with addiction, Cam’s only plan is to succumb to his substance abuse as the world collapses around him. His one ambition is to capture final days on a roll of 35mm film. But his plan is disrupted when his friend goes missing, putting him on a journey to find out what happened and who’s responsible.

Tiong Bahru Social Club (dir. Tan Bee Thiam): Ah Bee’s life is a dull, monotonous one and he seems stuck in a rut. Then, one day, the opportunity arises to work at the new Tiong Bahru Social Club, a data-driven project to create the happiest neighbourhood in the world. His encounters with the neighbourhood’s residents and the authority that runs the place reveal the absurdity of life. This candy-coloured satire flirts with Art Deco nostalgia set in Singapore’s most ‘gentrified’ district.

Strawberry Mansion (dir. Kentucker Audley and Albert Birney): Maybe tomorrow, an all-seeing surveillance state will start to invade our innermost thoughts and dreams. And, of course, we’ll be subject to ‘dream audits’ to collect taxes on our unconscious lives. So, one day, mild-mannered government agent James Preble travels to a remote farmhouse to audit the dreams of Bella Isadora, an eccentric artist. But Bella’s vast dream archive hides a secret that offers him a chance at love — and maybe a way out of his dull life.

Night Raiders (dir. Danis Goulet): The year is 2043, and North America has been shattered by war. The totalitarian regime that remains now forces children into brutal military training to fight in the futile war. To save her daughter, Waseese, from this fate, Niska has been hiding them in the woods, living a reclusive life dominated by fear of discovery. When the pair are forced into the remnants of the city, Waseese is captured along with several others. Niska finds herself among the ‘Night Raiders’, a group of indigenous rebels who plan to free their children.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Has Cast Adam Warlock

Ayesha in post credit scene from The Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 introducing Adam Warlock to MCU

After teasing the character’s appearance at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2Marvel has confirmed that Adam Warlock will be joining the MCU in the third instalment of Guardians and that he will be played – as reported by Deadline – by Will Poulter. Poulter previously demonstrated his talents as an action star in the dystopian franchise The Maze Runner, and his comedic chops in We’re the Millers (who can forget Kenny’s rap solo to “Waterfalls”?), which makes him very well-suited to Guardians’ established tonal blend. Regé-Jean Page and George MacKay were reportedly also considered for the role.

Will Poulter from The Maze Runner is cast as Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3

James Gunn is (after a fair bit of back and forth) returning to direct, with production expected to start next month. Gunn has previously named Adam Warlock as one of his favourite characters, so it’s fair to expect he will be granted a substantial arc in the upcoming Vol. 3, if not a recurring role appearing in other MCU films.

Warlock was teased in Vol. 2′s post-credit scene when the Golden High Priestess Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki), unveils to perfect Sovereign she has created to finally end the Guardians, introducing him as “the next step in our evolution. More beautiful, more powerful, more capable of destroying the Guardians of the Galaxy”.  Viewers only see the exterior of an imposing birthing pod, but Ayesha continues: “I think I shall call him… Adam.”

Adam Warlock in Marvel comics

The character is central to Marvel’s cosmic mythology. In the comics though, his origin story is different from that established in the MCU: he was created by the group of researchers called the “Enclave.” Their goal was to create the perfect human being, a creature referred to only as “Him”.  goal of the researchers was to create the perfect human being, the pinnacle of future human evolution. After a brutal encounter with Thor however, Him retreats to a regenerating cocoon and is effectively reborn. Him is then renamed as Warlock by the High Evolutionary, who becomes his guide, giving him purpose, direction, and granting him the Soul Stone.

As always though, plot details for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 are being kept strictly under wraps, so there’s no way to know how closely (or loosely) the MCU’s Adam Warlock will follow the path set for him by the comics.

Classic British Series UFO is Heading to Horror Channel

horror ufo

Gerry Anderson’s live-action classic series UFO will be landing in Horror Channel’s Sci-Fi Zone from October 20th. All 26 episodes of the 1970 first and only season will screen in the popular early evening slot.

Created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, the series was hugely popular and took the Supermarionation team into new territory by utilising regular live-action rather than puppets. Synopsis: Earth is being visited by aliens from a dying planet, who are abducting humans and harvesting their organs for their own bodies. Superman Comes Out As Bisexual In SON OF KAL-EL

Superman gets a boyfriend in upcoming DC comic Superman: Son of Kal-El

Superman is canonically bisexual! Come November 9th, it will be revealed that DC Comics’ (pride) flagship superhero is bisexual, in the upcoming issue Superman: Son of Kal-El.

The current Superman – who began his tenure this July – is Jonathan Kent, son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane. In the previewed panels from the comics, we meet Kent’s love interest: Jay Nakamura, a reporter (obviously!). This #5 issue will show Jon and Jay’s college friendship turn romantic after Nakamura takes care of Superman, who is struggling and burned out from the pressures of wearing the cape. Nakamura is also revealed to have powers.

Superman comes out as LGBTQ+ in upcoming DC comics

Writer Tom Taylor states that “Superman’s symbol has always stood for hope, for truth, and for justice. Today, that symbol represents something more. Today, more people can see themselves in the most powerful superhero in comics.”

“We couldn’t be prouder to tell this important story from Tom Taylor and John Timms,” said DC Chief Creative Officer and Publisher, Jim Lee. “We talk a lot about the power of the DC Multiverse in our storytelling and this is another incredible example. We can have Jon Kent exploring his identity in the comics as well as Jon Kent learning the secrets of his family on TV on Superman & Lois. They coexist in their own worlds and times, and our fans get to enjoy both simultaneously.”

Portraying Superman as bisexual is not the only way in which the character has been updated to our times: recent issues have seen him protesting the deportation of refugees, intervene in a high school shooting, and struggle to put out wildfires (whose cause is linked back to the climate crisis).

And Jon Kent won’t be alone. Earlier this year, it was also announced that Robin would have a boyfriend, while the mantle of Captain America will be passed on to a gay character, Aaron Fischer.

VOYAGER Stars Join Animated STAR TREK: PRODIGY Series

Star Trek: Prodigy unveils first look at animated series

The upcoming animated series Star Trek: Prodigy has added Daveed Diggs (Hamilton, Snowpiercer, Soul), Jameela Jamil (The Good Place, and the upcoming She-Hulk), Jason Alexander (Seinfeld) and Robert Beltran to its voice cast, ahead of season one’s premiere later this month. Kate Mulgrew voices Voyager Captain Janeway in Star Trek Prodigy

Set after the events of Voyager, Star Trek: Prodigy follows a ragtag crew of young aliens, exiled on a mining colony outside Federation space. When they find an abandoned Starfleet ship, the team must band together to take possession of the vessel and escape to the Alpha Quadrant. Captain Janeway will appear as the ship’s Emergency Training Hologram and, considering none of these teens have Starfleet training, she will likely receive her fair share of screen-time.

The show is part of executive producer Alex Kurtzman’s expanded Star Trek Universe, though Prodigy is aimed at younger audiences than, for example, the other CG-animated series Lower DecksIt is the first Star Trek series ever to be aimed specifically at younger viewers. Bring on a new generation of Trekkies!

Star Trek: Prodigy crew

Diggs will voice Commander Tysess, Jamil will be Ensign Asencia, Alexander joins as Doctor Noum, while Beltran will reprise his Voyager role as Chakotay. Star Trek: Prodigy premieres on Paramount+ on October 28th with a one-hour episode entitled “Lost & Found”.

DOCTOR WHO: FLUX To Begin On Halloween

Doctor Who Flux

After a frankly bizarre stunt in which all of the show’s social media channels disappeared for a day (or are we being generous in assuming it was a stunt and not an accidentally unpulled plug?), the BBC have finally given us some solid information on the upcoming Series 13 of Doctor Who, a six-part story now known to be titled Flux.

This series will begin on BBC One on Sunday 31st October, and it’s safe to assume it will continue over the following five Sundays. A video posted to the show’s now-regenerated Twitter account sees the Doctor warning us of the approaching ‘Flux’, a danger bringing with it a bunch of monsters. This includes the Sontarans and Weeping Angels, long rumoured but now confirmed to be returning, as well as new villains named Ravagers.

The series will see Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor and Mandip Gill’s Yaz joined in the TARDIS by newcomer Dan, played by comedian John Bishop. After this, the Thirteenth Doctor will appear in three more specials across 2022, which will be a farewell tour for Whittaker and lead writer Chris Chibnall. Chibnall is set to be replaced by the returning Russell T Davies from 2023.

WHEEL OF TIME Fans Get a Sneak Peek of New Show

Exciting new sneak peeks of the keenly anticipated Amazon Prime adaptation of Wheel of Time were revealed today as part of New York City Comic-Con.

The panel included various insights into the production of the show, including how the deep and complex lore of the series has been adapted for the screen.  We also got to see a small excerpt of the show itself, which featured Rosamund Pike’s magic using Moiraine making an understated entrance. Pike also discussed her characters use of the ‘One Power’ and how she was able to bring such a complex and esoteric character to the screen.

The first three episodes will premiere Friday, November 19, with new episodes available each Friday. There will be a total of 8 episodes, which means the last episode of season one will drop on Christmas Eve.  Season Two is already in production.

The Wheel of Time is the latest set of novels to get the adaptation treatment courtesy of Amazon, following in the footsteps of the likes of American Gods, Good Omens and the impending new take on The Lord of the Rings.

James Oliver Rigney Jr. wrote the first Wheel of Time novel, The Eye of the World, under the pen name of Robert Jordan back in 1990. Before his death in 2007 at the age of just 58, Jordan had written eleven further books including a prequel.  Brandon Sanderson completed the series.
