VOX MACHINA Opening Titles Unleashed

Critical Role and fantasy fans will be delighted to learn that the opening titles for  The Legend of Vox Machin are now online.  Amazon Prime Video debuted the sweeping opening title sequence for The Legend of Vox Machina as part of a virtual New York Comic Con panel with the creators and cast of Critical Role, who also serve as executive producers on the series.

The animated series began life as a joke on the regular D&D live-stream (available on YouTube and Twitch).  As a prove that cast member Sam Riegel can’t leave a good idea alone, the gag ran and ran until it became a  Kickstarter for a 22-minute animated short. The crowd-funder was so sucessful that rather than a simple test reel, we have got a 24-episode series, currently in production via the award winning studio Titmouse  and Amazon Prime.

The Legend of Vox Machina follows a group of neophyte adventurers on a quest to save the realm from terrifying monsters and dark magical forces. Throughout the first season, our characters will face undead giants, overthrow a sinister necromancer, and confront a powerful curse that has taken root inside their own group.

The series stars Critical Role founders and cast members Laura Bailey (The Last of Us: Part II), Taliesin Jaffe (Final Fantasy XIV), Ashley Johnson (The Last of Us), Liam O’Brien (Star Wars: The Bad Batch), Matthew Mercer (Overwatch), Marisha Ray (Final Fantasy XV), Sam Riegel (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), and Travis Willingham (Marvel’s Avengers). The Critical Role cast also serves as executive producers alongside Brandon Auman (Star Wars: Resistance) and Chris Prynoski (Metalocalypse).

The adult animated fantasy-adventure series will be available in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.  The show will be on Amazon Prime from February 4, 2022.

Sense8’s Jamie Clayton To Play Pinhead In HELLRAISER Reboot

Pinhead in Hellraiser films, as portrayed by Doug Bradley

Sense8 actress Jamie Clayton is taking over the iconic role of Pinhead in the upcoming Hellraiser reboot, an adaptation of Clive Barker’s work from director David Bruckner (The Night House).

In addition to Clayton, the cast includes Odessa A’Ziona, Brandon Flynn, Goran Visnjic, Drew Starkey, Adam Faison, Aoife Hinds, Selina Lo and Hiam Abbass in unconfirmed roles. With Clive Barker on board the reboot as producer, the Hellraiser reboot is worked from a story concept by David S. Goyer, from a script penned by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski.

The 1987 original was written and directed by Barker, based on his ’86 novella The Hellbound Heart. The supernatural horror involved a mystical puzzle box, the Lemarchand Configuration (renamed as the Lament Configuration in the films), with the power to summon the Cenobites, a group of formerly human-turned-demonic sadomasochistic beings – the leader of the Cenobites, later referred to as “Pinhead”, was portrayed by Doug Bradley between 1987 and 2005.

Jamie Clayton from Sense8 will play Pinhead

Cenobites reappear in the novel sequels, The Scarlet Gospels and Hellraiser: The Toll, as well as the ten Hellraiser films (four theatrical films, six straight-to-home video films). Later depictions of Pinhead were played by Paul T. Taylor and Stephan Smith Collins, with Fred Tatasciore providing the voice.

Despite the many films spurned from the original, there’s particular reason to be excited about Bruckner’s reboot: Barker himself states that “having seen some of the designs from David Bruckner’s new Hellraiser film, they pay homage to what the first film created, but then take it to places it’s never been before. This is a Hellraiser on a scale that I simply didn’t expect. David and his team are steeped in the story’s mythology, but what excites me is their desire to honour the original even as they revolutionise it for a new generation.
The release is planned for 2022, the 35th anniversary of the original film.

It’s Been Agatha All Along! Kathryn Hahn To Return For Solo Show

Agatha Harkness in Wandavision finale played by Kathryn Hahn

A potential Marvel show centred on Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness is in development at Marvel! Hahn is already set to reprise her role as the powerful witch from Salem, who featured in Disney+’s WandaVision opposite Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch and Paul Bettany’s Vision.

Agatha was a fan-favourite breakout character, earning Hahn an Emmy nomination and spurning endless amounts of memes – including takes on the oh-so-wonderful song, “Agatha All Along!” from episode 7.

Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness/Agnes in Marvel Wandavision

Few details yet on what/when/where the show will be, other than it will be executive produced by WandaVision’s head writer Jac Schaeffer and will take form as a dark comedy – suitable considering Hahn’s history playing deliciously funny roles with bite (not least as the child-hating, political sabotage-loving, PR master manipulator Jennifer Barkley in Parks and Recreation).

It’s unclear whether the spinoff show would take place before or after the events of WandaVision. [SPOILERS AHEAD] The show finale saw Scarlet Witch use chaos magic to strip Agatha of her powers and condemn her to live out her life as Agnes in Westview; however, Hahn’s overall deal with Marvel Studios suggests Agatha might well get her powers back in future, or at least become involved in the MCU’s wider events. Centuries of magical knowledge is sure to prove useful at some point, right? Like, when Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch start using magic to mess with time and reality, creating the Multiverse of Madness? Then would be a good time.

Mike Flanagan To Direct THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER

Gothic poet and writer Edgar Allan Poe wrote short story The Fall of the House of Usher

The Haunting anthology series creator, Mike Flanagan, has lined up his next Netflix project. Having recently launched the horror miniseries Midnight Masshe has also just received an eight-part series order for The Fall of the House of Usher, a standalone project.

The show is based on various works by Edgar Allan Poe and, although Netflix hasn’t revealed much in the way of plot details, we do know that Poe’s Gothic short story of the same name features themes of madness, isolation, familial relationships, and metaphysical identities.

The Haunting of Hill House

Though there’s nothing to indicate that this show will stick to the short story’s narrative, The Fall of the House of Usher has been adapted a number of times: as a 1928 silent French film, another silent film from 1928 released by James Sibley Watson and Melville Webber, then in 1960 from Roger Corman, then again in the 2006 film from Australian director Hayley Cloake.

Flanagan and Michael Fimognari will each direct four episodes. Though the latter’s feature directorial endeavours have so far been limited to To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You and To All The Boys: Always and Forever – which, granted, doesn’t scream arthouse horror – Fimognari worked as the cinematographer on a number of Flanagan’s projects, including Midnight Mass, Doctor Sleep, The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manorand Ouija: Origin of Evil

This show will mark Flanagan’s fifth project at Netflix, including the upcoming The Midnight Club.

Kristen Stewart & Steven Yeun To Star In Bizarre Sci-Fi

Kristen Stewart in science fiction thriller Underwater

Kristen Stewart is finally getting the attention she deserves and, with the incoming release of Spencer (and its associated Oscar buzz), a David Cronenberg-written and directed film coming soon (Crimes of the Future, co-starring Viggo Mortensen), and plans to direct (an adaptation of The Chronology of Water, based on the  2011 memoir by Lidia Yuknavitch), the star once best known for Twilight is showing no signs of slowing down.

Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in Spencer

While doing press for Pablo Larraín’s daring new Princess Diana drama, Stewart told Entertainment Weekly of a high-concept science fiction drama in her future. She is set to star opposite Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead, Minari, and the upcoming Jordan Peele movie Nope), and describes the project in the most intriguing way possible:

“It’s actually a love story between a satellite and a buoy; it’s hard to explain. I hope I don’t botch it, because it’s a really revolutionarily written script.” Who the script is by, who will be directing, and every other detail beyond this very tempting morsel is unknown.

Though Kristen Stewart is now best known for a mix of indie dramas and light-hearted comedies, she also recently tackled the sci-fi genre with the Lovecraftian horror film Underwater

We hope to find out who the creative team behind this mystery project will be, but the bringing together of two such talented actors is certainly cause for excitement.

Leak Or Mistake? Marvel Reveals BLADE Release Date

Blade reboot Marvel title card

The official (and very verified!) Marvel India Twitter account may have accidentally revealed the Blade reboot’s release date – and it could well be coming to screens sooner than we anticipated. According to the since-deleted tweet, the MCU feature starring multiple Oscar-winning actor Mahershala Ali as the infamous vampire hunter will supposedly release on October 7th, 2022.

The movie was first announced in July 2019, with Watchmen writer Stacy Osei-Kuffour on board as writer and Bassam Tariq (best known for Mogul Mowgli) directing.

Blade starring Mahershala Ali

The post had also listed several other upcoming Phase 4 Marvel projects with their already confirmed release dates; if October 7th proves to be the official date, this would slot Blade between the releases of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever on July 8th 2022 and The Marvels on November 11th 2022.

October would arguably prove surprisingly early for Blade, since this follows the announcement that filming was pushed back to July 2022 in order to further work on the movie’s script.

So, is October 7th an old and since-delayed release date, a random mistake, or is Marvel about to pull the film through the fastest post-production process the studio has ever seen?

His Wish Is Her Command In New HYPNOTIC Trailer

Psychological horror and thriller Hypnotic has just revealed its first trailer, ahead of its Halloween-time Netflix release on October 27th. The film stars horror favourite Kate Siegel (Midnight Mass, The Haunting franchise, Hush) as Jenn, a young woman who finds herself turning to alternative forms of wellness treatments as a means of self-improvement. After hearing about a renowned hypnotherapist, Dr. Collin Meade (Jason O’Mara, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Man in the High Castle), she seeks him out in the hope he can help her move past her trauma – only to discover that his sessions prompt some very dangerous, terrifying, and wholly unexpected side effects.

Dulé Hill and Lucie Guest also star alongside Siegel and O’Mara in the upcoming Netflix thriller written by Richard D’Ovidio, with Michael J. Luisi serving as producer.

In an interview with ColliderHypnotic directors Suzanne Coote and Matt Angel (who previously co-directed The Open House, starring Dylan Minnette) cite inspiration from such films as Vertigo, Silence of the Lambs, Ex Machinaand Fatal Attraction, and share that “our goal with a film like this is for the audience to have fun. Hypnotic is non stop. There are a lot of great psychological elements and big twists and turns. We love films like this, and at the end of the day, we hope the audience walks away having enjoyed the ride.”

Hypnotic will stream on Netflix globally from October 27th. Watch the official trailer below:

LONDON HORROR FESTIVAL set to play host to IRVING UNDEAD this October

Henry Irving, father of Dracula, returns to London

Irving Undead – a one-man play starring award-winning actor James Swanton (the demonic spirit in Host) – will be revived this October.

The play, which tells the true story of the Victorian actor Henry Irving, is getting four showings at The Space, from 22 to 24 October, as part of the London Horror Festival. The evening show on 24 October will also be available as a livestream.

Swanton’s previous one-man plays have gone on to the West End (Sikes & Nancy at Trafalgar Studios) and even been turned into feature films (Frankenstein’s Creature at FrightFest). But none of them have been as personally important to him as Irving Undead.

‘I’ve been intoxicated by Irving’s life and art for the last eight years or so,’ says Swanton. ‘My earliest acting influences were the likes of Christopher Lee and Vincent Price and Boris Karloff, so I’ve been thrilled to discover that the tradition of horror acting had an almighty precedent in Irving’s Lyceum Theatre.’

Swanton is no stranger to horror acting – so much so that Kim Newman has referred to him as a ‘horror star of the future’. But Swanton is clear about where the tradition began.

‘There’s no doubt in my mind that Irving was the most frightening actor who ever lived. Irving’s best-loved parts tended to be strikingly macabre: not only his signature role of murderous Mathias in The Bells, but the Flying Dutchman, Eugene Aram, Louis XI, Richard III, Macbeth… Did I mention Mephistopheles in Faust? Despite becoming so respectable a figure in later life, Irving was always subversive at heart.

‘Irving’s résumé amounts to a canon of semi-forgotten horror characters – and this makes him the perfect figure to resurrect at the London Horror Festival.’

One character with which Irving is forever associated refuses to die. Irving is still regarded as a key inspiration for Dracula, who made his first appearance in the 1897 novel by Bram Stoker, Irving’s long-time business manager.

‘It’s a very complicated subject, what inspires any artist,’ muses Swanton. ‘We know for sure that even if Stoker didn’t think Dracula was Irving, he certainly thought Irving should be Dracula! Stoker was bitterly disappointed that Irving never took up his suggestions to play the part.

‘Many have suggested that Irving’s greatest mistake was turning down the chance to become the very first actor to play Dracula. I don’t see that myself. Irving died the most celebrated actor of his age; the first actor in history to be knighted, no less. And despite steering clear of Dracula, Irving will forever have a bit of the Count’s immortality.’

That immortality is unflagging, with stage, film and television versions of Dracula building by the year. Irving himself remains in the shadows.

‘He’s a very difficult figure to get close to,’ Swanton admits. ‘His documented life is built of nothing but work, work, work. And his life on the stage was centred on unleashing an outsize mystery. Within the play, I speculate about what demons made Irving choose theatre over a more balanced life.’

Swanton has recently been building a reputation for horrifying roles on film, most notably the demonic spirit in the lockdown sensation Host on Shudder. He has also played the uncanny android in Broadcast Signal Intrusion (recently screened at FrightFest, Leicester Square), worked again with Rob Savage on his latest Dashcam, and the title role in Frankenstein’s Creature, the single-take feature film that brought him Best Male Performance of the Year from The Evolution of Horror and a Best Actor nomination from Total Film. Most recently he worked with SIFF Award Winner Scott Lyus on his feature debut Walking Against The Rain. He considers these monsters good preparations for playing Irving himself.

‘Fundamentally, Irving Undead questions whether acting is even a choice. It’s such a trying path that it can only be some abnormality that causes any of us to stick at it. The pandemic has brought this home to many actors – and yet, somehow, most of us stagger on. Irving certainly wouldn’t have been kept from acting by multiple lockdowns. He’d have been leading the way with a fiendish workaround in the style of Host!

‘Returning to any theatre after the last few years feels like a resurrection – and this chimes very well with the message of this play. To use the stage to bring Irving back to flesh-and-blood life (or undeath) is the best possible tribute to his artistic medium. A sculptor lives on in stone; a painter on canvas. But the only way an actor can be properly resurrected is through another actor. I best do the old man justice.’

Irving Undead runs at The Space from 22 to 24 October, with a livestream on 24 October (which will then be available on demand for two weeks). Tickets are available on The Space’s website, www.space.org.uk. For the London Horror Festival’s full programme, see www.londonhorrorfestival.co.uk.

OFFICIAL BLURB:

IRVING UNDEAD – written and performed by James Swanton

Henry Irving is dead.

Queen Victoria knighted him. Oscar Wilde applauded him. Shakespeare lived through him. And some whisper that Bram Stoker immortalised him – by writing the horror classic Dracula.

But Henry Irving is dead now. And Dracula is very much alive. A state of affairs that Irving will not accept.

Join Irving’s restless spirit as he tells the story of how he transformed himself from a stuttering, spindly country boy into the most formidable actor of the nineteenth century. It is a story of a man who petrified London with his Gothic portrayals of mad monarchs, guilt-stricken murderers and the devil himself. A story of a man who could never escape his monsters – even in death.

This resurrection of the greatest horror star of the past comes from award-winning actor James Swanton (Host, Broadcast Signal Intrusion, Frankenstein’s Creature), who Kim Newman describes as a ‘horror star of the future’.

Praise for James Swanton:

‘A fearless actor … Startling and enthralling … A remarkable performer’ Simon Callow

‘Extraordinary … Superb … It couldn’t have been more vivid!’Miriam Margolyes

‘Fierce emotional intensity … A compelling physical presence’Michael Billington, The Guardian

PEACEMAKER Gets Roasted In First Clip

Peacemaker DCEU television series from james Gunn starring John Cena - key art

John Cena is returning as Peacemaker, the ultra-patriotic, hyper-literal member of 2021’s The Suicide Squad in his very own eponymous superhero series. The James Gunn-created spin-off marks the first series in the DC Extended Universe, set to debut on HBO Max in January 2022 and will follow on from the events of the movie. In anticipation of Peacemaker, Warner Media have released a first teaser, unveiled as part of its HBO Max European launch event.

The show also stars Steve Agee as the warden of Belle Reve penitentiary John Economos, Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, whom Gunn described as the series’ co-lead, Robert Patrick as Peacemaker’s father, Jennifer Holland as an NSA agent who is an aide to Amanda Waller, Freddie Stroma as Vigilante, a district attorney and crimefighter who can heal rapidly, and Chukwudi Iwuji as the mercenary and Task Force X leader Clemson Murn. Gunn wrote all eight episodes of the series, and will be directing five of them.

John Cena as Peacemaker in character poster for The Suicide Squad 2021

Perhaps best described as an unstable Captain America (or is that just John Walker?), DC’s Peacemaker strives to achieve peace no matter the cost. As he himself puts it, “I cherish peace with all of my heart. I don’t care how many men, women and children I need to kill to get it.” And if The Suicide Squad is anything to go by, Peacemaker is set to be some of best, absurdly funny television released this year. After all, from “If this whole beach was completely covered in dicks, and somebody said I had to eat every dick until the beach was clean for liberty, I would say ‘no problemo!'” to “It’s not a toilet seat. It’s a beacon of freedom,” Cena’s character had all the film’s best one-liners.
