The Clone Club is back! AMC Networks have greenlit an Orphan Black spinoff series, titled Echoes.

The original series, which ran for five seasons between 2013 and 2017, starred Tatiana Maslany in an impressive number of different roles (and the associated wigs); Orphan Black centred on Sarah Manning (Maslany), who discovers she is one of several genetically identical human clones, raising fascinating questions about the moral and ethical implications of human cloning and its effects on personal identity.

Echoes will be set in the near future and takes a deeper dive into the exploration of the scientific manipulation of human existence, said the network. It follows a group of women as they weave their way into each other’s lives and embark on a thrilling journey, unravelling the mystery of their identity and uncovering a wrenching story of love and betrayal.

Pieces of Her filmmaker Anna Fishko will serve as showrunner and executive producer alongside John Fawcett, the co-creator and director of the original Orphan Black. The first season will comprise of ten episodes, and is due to premiere in 2023.

SHERLOCK HOLMES Spinoff Series In The Works From Robert Downey Jr.

Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law in Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes series is being eyed by HBO Max , which would be produced by Robert Downey Jr.

Deadline reports that the streamer and Warner Bros. are looking to build a Sherlock film-TV universe akin to the current Suicide Squad and The Batman ‘verses, which both exist across blockbusters and television series.

Two potential spinoff series from the Guy Ritchie-directed, Downey Jr. and Jude Law-starring film franchise are currently in the works. Word has it that these spinoffs would revolve around characters that have not yet been introduced in the films… However, a third instalment of the feature franchise (which was originally slated for a December 2020 release but has no new release date) would serve to introduce the aforementioned characters. Long story short, whether the series get made depends on the fate of that third film.

While filming hasn’t begun on this third movie, both Downey Jr. and director Dexter Fletcher (who takes over from Ritchie) have publicly reaffirmed their commitment to getting the feature made. We may yet see Iron Man in Victorian garb again.

EVE STRANGER Comics Being Adapted by BBC Studios

Eve Stranger comic series optioned by BBC studios

BBC Studios has optioned the Eve Stranger comic book series and is adapting it into a television show, Deadline reports. The series is currently in development.

Veronica Gleeson is set to write the series about Eve, an “amnesiac for hire” with unlimited funds, a jet-set lifestyle and extraordinary abilities. Eve wakes up in a hotel room having forgotten who she is and how she got there. Beside her is a teddy bear, credit card, briefcase full of cash, a used syringe, and a letter in her handwriting detailing her next assignment. She’s living week by week, undertaking various, seemingly impossible jobs on behalf of a mysterious benefactor. Her blood carries nanobombs, and the contents of the syringe are the closest thing she has to a cure – it deactivates them for one week, but it also wipes her memory.

Per the comic book’s description, Eve Stranger wakes up each Friday morning “with a clean slate and a new job, from black ops action/adventure hero to personal shopper, scuba treasure hunter to space station saboteur.”

Being Human (the British/superior version) exec Matthew Bouch is producing the series, and described the comics as a “mind-bending journey, a wild mix of complex characters and comic book verve taking us on an action-adventure ride that dazzles even as it deepens in psychological richness.”

The comics were created by writer David Barnett, with illustrations by Philip Bond, and were released as a miniseries in 2019.

Kid Cudi Boards John Woo Action Thriller SILENT NIGHT

American rapper and artist Kid Cudi – who is credited as Scott Mescudi in his acting roles – has been tapped to star in the John Woo action thriller Silent Night. He joins a cast that includes The Suicide Squads Joel Kinnaman.

The film follows Godlock (Kinnaman), a father on a mission to avenge his young son, after he was tragically caught in the crossfire of gang violence on Christmas Eve. Shot and almost killed while in pursuit of the murderers, Godlock vows to avenge his son by any means necessary. Mescudi plays a detective named Dennis Vassel.

Though that might sound like your pretty run-of-the-mill revenge thriller, Woo’s latest is said not to contain a single word of dialogue. Silent Night indeed. This marks the legendary Chinese filmmaker’s first Hollywood project since 2003’s Paycheck, though he is well known amongst Western audiences for directing the iconic Face/Off and Mission Impossible II. It’s also worth stating that Woo’s thriller bears no relation to last year’s Silent Night starring Keira Knightley, nor to the 2020 crime thriller of the same name.

Robert Lynn penned the screenplay, with the cast also including Harold Torres as the gang leader Playa, and Catalina Sandino Moreno as Godlock’s wife Saya. Silent Night is currently filming in Mexico City.

Mescudi was most recently seen in Ti West’s horror X and in the Oscar-nominated Don’t Look UpHe is set to write, star in, and make his directorial debut with Teddy – a Netflix comedy with Jay-Z and Jeymes Samuels (The Harder They Fall) attached to produce.

Daniel Kaluuya Co-Writes Dystopian Drama THE KITCHEN, Stars TOP BOY’s Kano

Daniel Kaluuya in Widows, will co-write dystopian drama The Kitchen

Daniel Kaluuya is moving behind the camera with his first feature writing credit, a futuristic dystopian drama titled The Kitchen. The Oscar-winning actor co-writes the feature alongside Joe Murtagh (Calm with Horses, Gangs of London) for Netflix.

Set in 2044 London, The Kitchen paints a bleak futuristic world in which the wealth gap between rich and poor has been stretched to its very limit. With all forms of social housing having been eliminated, London’s working class is now forced to live in temporary accommodation on the outskirts of the capital. However, a place called “The Kitchen” is the first and largest of its kind: London’s last village harbouring residents that refuse to move on and move out of the place they call home. The story centres on residents Izi, who is desperate to find a way out, and 12-year-old Benji, who has lost his mother and is searching for a family.

As the cost of living in the UK explodes, this one might be hitting a little too close to home. Kane ‘Kano’ Robinson, best known for his starring role in Netflix’s wildly popular Top Boy series, has been tapped to play Izi. Benji will be played by newcomer Jedaiah Bannerman.

The Kitchen comes from an original idea by Kaluuya, Kibwe Tavares, and Daniel Emmerson. Tavares will helm the project, marking his feature directorial debut. Talking about the inspiration behind the film, Kaluuya recalls: “In 2011, I was in my barbershop and there was a guy boasting about smash and grabs — kids doing million-pound heists in a minute, getting paid £200 to do it. I saw the potential to unlock a unique story door to the inequality, fatherhood, class, joy, resilience, courage, defiance and care of London. Now, nearly a decade later, Kibwe Tavares, Daniel Emmerson and I are about to start production, immersing ourselves in a dystopian London that interrogates what ‘care’ means, at home and as a society and the dangers in our future if we stay indifferent to everything around us.”

The Kitchen will release on Netflix sometime in 2023.

Kathryn Bigelow Adapting David Koepp Sci-Fi Novel AURORA

Aurora by David Koepp

Oscar-winning filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow has set up her latest feature project over at Netflix, announced The Hollywood Reporter, a sci-fi film titled Aurora. This marks the director’s first feature film since 2017’s Detroit, starring John Boyega.

Aurora adapts the upcoming novel by David Koepp, the veteran screenwriter we can thank for Jurassic Park, Mission: Impossible, Panic Room and Spider-Man. Koepp will also write the screenplay for the adaptation.

The film will follow the events of a solar storm that knocks out most of humanity’s power grids, creating a catastrophic worldwide power crisis that causes a collapse of the social order. The narrative focuses on the personal story of a divorced mother, Aubrey, who must now do all she can to protect her teenage child, including reconnecting with her estranged brother Thom – a wealthy Silicon Valley CEO who owns a luxurious desert bunker built precisely for such an occasion.

Koepp’s book is due to release June 7th, with a blurb from Stephen King labelling Aurora a “real page-turner”.

OBI-WAN KENOBI Changes Release Date

obi-wan kenobi

Firstly, DO NOT PANIC. Obi-Wan Kenobi will only be premiering two days later than originally scheduled – the show is being moved from a May 25th release date to the Friday, May 27th.

What’s more, there’s actually GOOD news attached: Disney+ will be dropping not one, but two episodes simultaneously. Everyone’s favourite Scotsman, Ewan McGregor announced the slight change of plans via a video released to Disney+’s Twitter account.

Amusingly – and probably not coincidentally – this new release date change sets up a clash of the titans of sorts, since the 27th will also see the first part of Netflix’s Stranger Things season 4 drop on the streamer. Choose your side carefully, folks.

Obi-Wan Kenobi sees McGregor and Hayden Christensen return as Obi-Wan and Darth Vader respectively, for the first time in seventeen long years. Moses Ingram, Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell and Benny Safdie also star.

The story begins ten years after the dramatic events of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, with The Mandalorian filmmaker Deborah Chow directing all six episodes of the limited series.

So mark your calendars for May 27th and if you haven’t already, check out the glorious trailer for Obi-Wan Kenobi.

BOOK OF BOBA FETT Filmmaker To Relaunch SPY KIDS Franchise

spy kids 2001 original film

The Spy Kids franchise is headed to Netflix! The streamer is joining forces with Robert Rodriguez – who created the superspy family action-comedy film series – to relaunch the property. Any plot details are being kept in a top secret vault, but the new Spy Kids intends to introduce a new, multicultural family of spies.

The original movies starred Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino as spies captured on assignment, whose kids (played by Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara) take it upon themselves to rescue their parents. The very successful original Spy Kids series comprised four films released between 2001 and 2011, and featured truckloads of wacky CGI, cheesy action and super-cool gadgets.

Rodriguez has since directed modern genre classics such as Sin City, Planet Terror and Alita: Battle Angelas well as helming episodes of Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. Rodriguez is confirmed to write and direct the as-yet-unnamed reboot.
