POPPY PLAYTIME Video Game Getting Film Adaptation

poppy playtime video game getting film adaptation from legendary

Legendary has closed a – surprisingly aggressive – deal with Mob Entertainment, beating out several competitive offers, to develop and produce a live-action feature adaptation of the horror video game, Poppy Playtime. Legendary will develop and produce the project alongside Mob Entertainment and Angry Films’ Don Murphy and Susan Montford.

Poppy Playtime is a first-person video game that sees the player acting as a former employee of a faded toy brand and who, thanks to a cryptic letter, is drawn back to an abandoned facility from which all staff disappeared ten years prior, only to discover it inhabited by a host of toys, including Huggy Wuggy, Mommy Long Legs, and CatNap, all of whom have taken on a life of their own. The game’s players have to solve clues, work out puzzles, and use gadgets to unravel the mystery of the letter and get out alive.

This marks Legendary’s first foray into the video game adaptation space, one of the leading trends in both feature and TV entertainment right now. Poppy Playtime joins a line-up of very successful (and some less so) adaptations: among them The Last of Us, Sonic the Hedgehog and Knuckles, Fallout, Twisted Metal, the upcoming Borderlands, as well as other projects still in the works like El Paso, Elsewhere and Golden Axe.

the lord of the rings original trilogy helmer peter jackson returning for another feature

Warner Bros. has confirmed that, not only will Middle-earth be returning to the big screen, but OG Lord of the Rings helmer Peter Jackson will be working on the new title, with an anticipated release date in 2026.

David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, said the company is “now in the early stages of script development” for new Lord of the Rings movies, which he states will “explore storylines yet to be told.

The first film, which hails from WB and New Line Cinema, is Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum (though that’s a working title at the moment) with Andy Serkis reprising his role as the titular character, Gollum (aka Smeagol) and directing the feature. Peter Jackson and his longtime writing partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens will be involved every step of the way on the project, even if Jackson won’t be directing. Jackson has, of course, directed many films in JRR Tolkien’s universe: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King, as well as The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug, and The Battle of the Five Armies. Boyens and Walsh are writing the screenplay on The Hunt for Gollum. The deal in question covers two films in the franchise.

“It is an honor and a privilege to travel back to Middle-earth with our good friend and collaborator, Andy Serkis, who has unfinished business with that stinker — Gollum!,” Jackson, Boyens and Walsh said in a statement. “As life long fans of Professor Tolkien’s vast mythology, we are proud to be working with [WBD film chiefs] Mike De Luca, Pam Abdy and the entire team at Warner Bros. on another epic adventure!”

“Yesssss, Precious. The time has come once more to venture into the unknown with my dear friends, the extraordinary and incomparable guardians of Middle-earth Peter, Fran and Philippa,” added Serkis. “With Mike and Pam, and the Warner Bros team on the quest as well, alongside WETA and our film making family in New Zealand, it’s just all too delicious… .”

Seven years (already, can you believe it?!) after Denis Villeneuve dazzled audiences with Blade Runner 2049, Blade Runner is heading to the small screen in Amazon’s upcoming series Blade Runner 2099, with news that the inimitable, ever-talented, Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh has signed on to star!

Ridley Scott, the mind behind the original Blade Runner starring Harrison Ford, is executive producing the live action series, with Blade Runner 2099 reportedly a follow-up to the events of the film sequel, 2049. As Deadline writes in their exclusive, “the latest instalment of the neo-noir sci-fi franchise will be set 50 years after the sequel”.

Silka Luisa, best known for Shining Girls, is on board to write, showrun and executive produce. Jonathan van Tulleken (Shōgun) will direct and executive produce the first two episodes.

Released in 1982, Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner was a loose adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s 1968 novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. The movie followed a Blade Runner Rick Deckard, who had to pursue and terminate four replicants who stole a ship in space, having returned to Earth to find their creator. In Villeneuve’s sequel, which starred Ryan Gosling as Blade Runner K, followed K’s search for Deckard, who’d been missing for thirty years. Ford returned to his iconic role.

There’s no info yet on the plot of 2099, but with Michelle Yeoh attached, we can only imagine it’s going to be a must-see.

Vin Diesel’s RIDDICK: FURYA Is Moving Ahead

vin diesel returning as riddick in riddick: furya

Vin Diesel is officially returning as the galactic antihero Riddick, in a reboot of the the sci-fi action franchise that gave the Fast & Furious actor his first major leading role.

Riddick: Furya, which was announced to be in the works back in February 2023, is now moving towards an August 26th film start date, as producers announced this week. Diesel, expectedly, returns to star in and produce the film, reuniting him with David Twothy, the filmmaker who directed the franchise’s previous entries.

The film Pitch Black, which released in 2000, introduced Diesel as a captured criminal who, along with a group of other passengers, crash lands on a planet where sundown unleashes feral monsters. It was followed by 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick. Diesel then bought the rights to the franchise, which resulted in the simply-titled 2013 film, Riddick.

In Riddick; Furya, which Diesel and Twohy have been discussing since 2014, Riddick will finally return to his home world, a place he barely remembers and one he fears might be left in ruins. But there he finds other Furyans fighting for their existence against a new monster, and some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined.

THE MAZE RUNNER Is Already Getting Rebooted

20th Century Studios is working on a reboot of the sci-fi action adventure franchise The Maze Runner, which ran as a trilogy from 2014 to 2018. Currently, Transcendence and Alien: Covenant scribe Jack Paglen is in talks to write the screenplay for the new instalment.

Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Lee Stollman of Gotham Group, along with Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen of Temple Hill, all of whom produced the original trilogy, are returning to produce this new project. Wes Ball, the director of all three films, is also due to be involved as producer.

Based on the best-selling YA dystopia novels by James Dashner, the first film centred on a group of teenagers who find themselves in a walled community named the Glade, dropped there with all their memories wiped. Beyond the four walls of the encampment lies a maze, filled with deadly mechanical creatures and doors that shut every night at sundown. One new arrival figures out the key to the group’s survival and attempts to lead them out.

According to THR sources, the reboot is neither of a remake of the story, nor is it a direct sequel to the trilogy, which starred Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, and Will Poulter.

DARTH JAR-JAR Is Real And Coming To Disney+

darth jar-jar in trailer for star wars: rebuilding the galaxy special

A character we all love to hate gets a Sith makeover in the trailer for Disney+’s upcoming Star Wars special, an animated LEGO series titled Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy: ladies, gents, and others, please ready yourselves for the arrival of one Darth Jar-Jar.

An awkward Gungan outcast living on Naboo, Jar-Jar Binks was infamously introduced as a major character in 1999’s The Phantom Menace, and returned with a supporting role in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. He also had a role in the animated television series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

In Rebuild the Galaxy, the Star Wars Galaxy gets completely mixed up when an ordinary nerf-herder, Sig Greebling (Gaten Matarazzo, of Stranger Things fame), unearths a powerful artifact from a hidden Jedi temple. He finds himself thrust into an adventure in a new, wondrously wild and twisted version of the galaxy where good guys are bad, bad guys are good, and the fate of all depends on Sig becoming the hero who can put all the pieces back together.

In the special, Darth Jar-Jar will be voiced by Ahmed Best, who provided the voice and motion capture for the character in Episodes I-III. Mark Hamill also returns to give his voice to a LEGO Luke Skywalker.

Showrunners and executive producers Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit wrote in a statement: “The opportunity to work with LEGO and Lucasfilm to rebuild the galaxy has been a dream come true. We’ve been collecting LEGO Star Wars sets for 25 years, and we have approached this project with a fan’s enthusiasm, crafting this story quite literally brick by brick. For new fans, this will be an exciting place to enter the world of LEGO Star Wars, and for lifelong fans, you’re going to see some things that you never thought possible.”

“It’s hard to believe that it’s been 25 years since the ground-breaking collaboration between Lucasfilm and The LEGO Group began,” says executive producer James Waugh. “…Tapping into the comedic genius of Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit, two of the most talented comedy writers I’ve had the fortune of working with, we’ve mixed and matched LEGO sets to snap together Imperial X-fighters, Rebel TIE-wings, and yes, even Darth Jar Jar. This four-piece special is a celebration of all things Star Wars, LEGO, and the incredible explorations that can only happen when these two amazing brands come together.”

Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy will consist of four parts, debuting September 13th on Disney+. Watch the trailer below:

TITANE And RAW Filmmaker Sets Her Third Film

still from titane film by julia ducournau, who has set her third film, titled alpha

French filmmaker Julia Ducournau should be a name well-known to any self-respecting horror fan, the mind behind the cannibal film Raw and the wild, genre-defying Titane. And in some good news today, we’ve learned her third movie has been confirmed, titled Alpha. Though it carries on the director’s tendency towards snappy, mysterious, one-word movie names, that’s about all we know about the flick.

Golshifteh Farahani (The Patience Stone) and Tahar Rahim (The Mauritanian, and… *cough* Madame Web. Don’t hold it against him, though).

Variety reports that FilmNation Entertainment and Charades are presenting the project at Cannes Film Festival. “Alpha is Julia’s most personal, profound work yet, and we are looking forward to a global audience discovering the story with as much excitement as we did,” the two entertainment companies said in a statement. “We can’t wait to bring the film to market in Cannes and to launch sales together for the first time and collaborate in this way.”

Alpha is a new page in Julia Ducournau’s corpus that is both very consistent with the previous ones and entirely new in its tone,” the producers said. “To match an exceptional project, it was necessary to transcend conventions, as evidenced by the exceptional combination of producers on one hand and international sales companies on the other.”

A24 Scores Adam Wingard’s Action-Horror ONSLAUGHT

godzilla x kong filmmaker adam wingard has upcoming film onslaught scooped up by A24. Still from The New Empire

A24 has come out on top of an auction to pick up Onslaught, an action thriller directed by Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire filmmaker Adam Wingard, which he’s co-writing with frequent collaborator Simon Barrett.

The Hollywood Reporter writes that the feature will have a scope more in line with his early movies, which were all original creations. Details for Onslaught are being kept top secret, but sources describe it as a “gonzo action horror thriller”. The project is expected to begin filming this autumn, so Legendary MonsterVerse fans will have to wait a while before Wingard gets back to the kaiju action. Though Wingard does not yet have a deal to return for a third Godzilla/Kong outing, sources suggest it remains very likely he’ll be tapped for an upcoming film. Onslaught will, however, be his next project.

Wingard and Barrett previously made the cult hits You’re Next and The Guest together.

Aaron Ryder and Andrew Swett will produce Onslaught under their Ryder Picture Company banner alongside A24, and Alexander Black for Lyrical Media. Wingard and manager Jeremy Platt will also produce, via their new company Breakaway Civilization, along with Barrett.

Stay tuned for further updates on the synopsis, cast, and potential release date as we hear it!
