Jenna Ortega is a robot with a sunny outlook in the trailer for Taika Waititi’s feature adaptation of Klara and the Sun. The Wednesday and Death of a Unicorn actress stars opposite Amy Adams in a film co-written by Waititi and Dahvi Waller, adapting author Kazuo Ishiguro’s 2021 dystopian sci-fi novel.
Ortega stars as Klara, a solar-powered “Artificial Friend” whose purpose is to serve as a companion to humans. In an unspecified future in which technological advances in genetic engineering have divided humans into strict, isolated social classes, Klara is tasked with befriending Josie, a sick girl for whom she was purchased. Mia Tharia stars as Josie, and Adams as her mother; they are joined by Steve Buscemi, Natasha Lyonne, and Aran Murphy.
Waititi, whose most recent directorial outing was 2023’s Next Goal Wins, produces Klara and the Sun alongside David Heyman, Jeffrey Clifford, Rosie Alison, and Garrett Basch.
Ortega’s upcoming features include The Gallerist and J.J. Abrams’ The Great Beyond. The actress is also set to return for Netflix’s third season of Wednesday. Adams was most recently seen in Nightbitch and Disenchanted, and will appear next in At the Sea and Star Wars: Starfighter.
Klara and the Sun releases in cinemas on October 23rd. Watch the trailer below:
