BATGIRL Movie a Go! DC Announces its New Barbara Gordon…

Batgirl has been on the docket for Warner Bros/DC Films for a substantial amount of time now, with one of the last widely reported attempts at getting it off the ground in 2017 when script duties were given to a post-Justice League Joss Whedon. The now-controversial filmmaker ultimately admitted defeat, first citing that he couldn’t crack the script, later extrapolating that he was just being polite and the film “didn’t fit in the space that was left for it [by Warner Bros]”, and that it “sort of crumbled in my hands”. We don’t know what any of that means either, so let’s just read between the lines and go with the age-old ‘creative differences’ angle. Naturally, with so much potential in getting Barbara Gordon’s legacy on screen, DC has plowed on in the meantime, and has now announced who will be donning the cape and cowl!

After testing several actors recently including the fantastic Zoey Deutch (The Politician), it’s now been revealed that Leslie Grace will step into the roll. If you’re not familiar, then it’s likely you’ve not seen In the Heights, in which she’s garnered much praise for her debut role as Nina Rosario. The musical, from Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and director Jon M. Chu (who we still haven’t forgiven for ruining Jem and the Holograms), is in UK cinemas right now, so go check it out if you want to see Grace in action.

Leslie Grace

As you might expect for a movie at this stage in its development, that’s about it for details for now, but we do know that it will be the first DC movie to be produced specifically for HBO Max, the company’s streaming service. What that means for its release in the UK remains to be seen, but with no HBO Max presence here coupled with the calibre of the property, we currently expect to be seeing it on the big screen.

CLERKS III Officially Starts Production Next Month!

clerks iii

After years of false starts, Clerks III is finally a go, with Lionsgate announcing they’ve acquired worldwide distribution rights to the long-awaited sequel.

Kevin Smith has struggled to get the passion project made for some time, with the screenplay going through multiple iterations. Though an initial stumbling block was the reluctance of Jeff Anderson to return for a third movie (he expertly portrayed the cantankerous clerk Randal in 1994, reprising him as a belligerent burger flipper in 2006), it appears he eventually had a change of heart, and has finally signed on. Coincidentally, it’s the pivotal character’s heart that will be central to the film’s story itself…

After suffering a life-threatening heart attack – similar to that of Kevin Smith’s own 2018 medical emergency – Randal Graves decides to make a movie about himself and his friends. Clerks, basically. On hand to help, Dante (Brian O’Halloran), Becky (Rosario Dawson), Elias (Trevor Fehrman), and, of course, Jay & Silent Bob themselves.

Expect cameos aplenty from the vast View Askewniverse, though we hope given the subject matter and Clerks’ legacy they’ll be significantly less winking at the camera than we recently saw on display in the divisive Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. It’s also worth noting that this will mark the fourth film – after Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot – in which Smith uses the making of a movie to fuel the plot, so let’s channel some Buddy Christ energy and all have faith the legendary filmmaker has something fresh up those trademark baggy sleeves of his!

The movie starts production next month on location in New Jersey for a 2022 release.

First Trailer Hits for Adaptation BRAND NEW CHERRY FLAVOR from CHANNEL ZERO Creators

cherry flavor

While American Horror Story is about to celebrate its tenth year with another season and a new spin-off, the far superior genre anthology show Channel Zero was sadly cancelled after just four series. Even worse, the show never found a solid home over here in the UK (though it can now be found in its entirety on Starz via Amazon Prime Video – we highly recommend you check it out).

Though their first creation remains somewhat of a hidden gem, writer/producers Nick Antosca and Lenore Zion will no doubt find their next project gets a more deserving audience after teaming up with Netflix. The duo has adapted Todd Grimson’s 2011 cult horror novel Brand New Cherry Flavor into an 8-part limited series starring Rosa Salazar (Alita: Battle Angel) and Catherine Keener (Being John Malkovich) that will premiere on August 13th, and with the first trailer unveiled today, it’s now very high on our watchlist!

Check out the trailer below and read on for the official blurbage:

Official Synopsis:

A filmmaker heads to Hollywood in the early ‘90s to make her movie but tumbles down a hallucinatory rabbit hole of sex, magic, revenge – and kittens.

D&D Fans to Devour NERDS

It’s the obvious team-up that no one thought to ask for. The world’s most popular tabletop roleplaying game has teamed up with the very sweet but also sour candy NERDS to produce one of the weirdest team-ups of all time.

Boxes of brightly coloured pieces of sugar will contains details of how to access one of seven custom D&D adventures, broadly based on the ‘personalities’ of the various characters found on a box of NERDs candy. Each one of these also utilises a Dungeons and Dragons character class. Apparently, green-coloured NERDs are bards; who knew?

The story begins in the city of Harmony which has been experiencing a strange case of “color outages.” Rumours are flying around about what might be causing the problem. Will the party be able to solve the mystery? Only by consuming boxes of NERDs will you be able to find out.

D&D Announces Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons

The third Dungeons and Dragons book for 2021 has been announced; it will be called Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons. Oddly enough, it will focus heavily on dragons, which happens to be a major part of the game (the clue is in the name, after all).

Fifth Edition D&D books that aren’t adventures tend to feature a prominent character from the game’s canon. Fizban is a rather doddery arch-mage who may or may not be the all-powerful dragon god Paladine in disguise.

The book is intended to be used in all D&D setttings, though the book’s title is a nod to the Dragonlance setting. It will be crammed with references to D&D’s rich history of dragon-inspired storytelling. We understand that Dragonlance’s iconic Draconians will feature in this book, with rules that will allow you play them in different settings.

The book will feature extra rule, character options and story ideas. This includes introducing a third faction of dragons, the crystalling dragons. The book will go into the story of the First World and the role Bahamut and Tiamat played in its creation and destruction.

New character options will include draconic-themed subclasses for monks and rangers, as well as new spells and feats. New types of Dragonborn will also be in the book, as well as dragon lair maps and many different kinds of dragons.

The book comes out October 19th, 2021, and will be available in normal and special ‘art’ cover hardback variants.

INDIANA JONES 5 Adds Antonio Banderas

Indiana Jones

Given that shooting is now in full swing on Indiana Jones 5, we’d be forgiven for thinking we were fully up to date on all the major players joining the adventure-loving archaeologist for his swansong. Not so it seems, with news arriving recently that Antonio Banderas has been added to the cast. The 61-year-old actor has been relatively quiet over recent years (probably laying low after Doolittle), but between this movie, a third outing for the ever-popular Puss in Boots, and the highly anticipated video game adaptation of Uncharted all hitting next year, it looks like the Desperado star will shortly be back with a vengeance!

Naturally, details as to who he will be playing are – like the title and plot itself – a closely guarded secret. Until the first trailer comes out later this year and tells us absolutely everything.

Banderas will be joining a cast that includes Phoebe Waller-Bridge (as Indy’s daughter and future star of the franchise itself?), Mads Mikkelsen, Boyd Holbrook, and Shaunette Renée Wilson. Though not officially announced yet, Toby Jones will also feature (thank you set pics!), and Karen Allen is thought likely to reprise Marian Ravenwood (it would be a crying shame if she didn’t!).

As for the rumours yesterday regarding a surprise return of Mutt Williams, if there’s any stock in them at all, we can be rest assured the character is recast. After he was outed as an abuser by former girlfriend FKA Twigs in January during an interview with Louis Theroux, we don’t expect to see Shia LaBeouf in a movie ever again. Turns out that when Ford himself called his Crystal Skull co-star a “fucking idiot” in 2011,  he was actually just being polite.

INDIANA JONES 5 hits cinemas July 29th 2022

WANDAVISION Director to Helm New STAR TREK Movie

Though Star Trek on TV has been going from strength to strength over the last few years, its adventures on the big-screen have remained docked since 2016’s Star Trek Beyond. Not that Paramount has been resting on their laurels, it must be said, with several features in development from the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Noah Hawley (Legion). While those scripts remain under wraps for now, the studio has finally chosen what will be their next cinematic Star Trek adventure, and it will be directed by Matt Shakman of WandaVision.

Matt Shakman in production on It’s Always Sunny in Philidelphia

The MCU’s first TV show for Disney+ debuted in January and was met with near-unanimous praise from audiences and critics alike, going on to be nominated for a mighty 23 Emmy nominations earlier this week. Shakman has also played in the sandbox of another huge genre property in the form of HBO’s Game of Thrones, though we’re happy to report he wasn’t responsible for any of that final season (R.I.P. GoT). While this may mark Shakman’s movie debut, with the lines ever-blurring between television and feature film production, coupled with his experience in two of the biggest genre franchises the world has ever seen, we’re confident Trek is in safe hands here. As is the script…

Providing the screenplay are Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. While the latter has a proven track record of working on this scale – she wrote both the well-received Tomb Raider reboot in 2018 and Captain Marvel the year after – Beer is a relative newcomer to big-budget fare, with only an indie debut (2018’s Sierra Burgess Is a Loser) and a little-seen motion-comic-style series for Netflix (The Magic Order) under her belt. What the writing duo do have in common, however, is that they are currently in very high demand. Just a few notable projects on their upcoming slate include a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, a sequel to recent horror hit Pet Sematary, a remake of Short Circuit, Silver Sable for Marvel, DC’s Gotham City Sirens, and big screen debuts for cult ‘80s properties M.A.S.K. and Visionaries. And that’s without listing any of their original material. Screenwriters don’t come much more high profile than that!

While there’s no further news on what we can expect from the project, we do know that the new Star Trek motion picture will arrive in June 2023. Meanwhile, coming soon to the small screen, we have Star Trek: PicardSeason 2, Star Trek: Discovery Season 4, Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Star Trek: Prodigy. Has there ever been a better time to be a Star Trek fan?
