Aquaman Gets A New Look In DCEU Sequel

Jason Momoa's Aquaman gets new look for lost kingdom sequel DC

Aquaman has a new suit! DCEU star Jason Momoa unveiled the hero’s new look for the upcoming Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom sequel, posting two images of himself as Arthur Curry on Instagram.

The first image shows him in the green and gold costume of the first film, reminiscent of the original comic book look. The second costume, on the other hand, is darker, sleeker, and more Snyder-esque. “Second round. New suit. More action,” reads the caption.

Gone are the fins and more dramatic flourishes, replaced with a streamlined, dark blue suit with silver accents and armour detailing. The belt and fish scales-like texture are still present, however, helping to establish some continuity between the two looks.

Aquaman and the lost kingdom Jason Momoa reveals new suit

The second also shares more in common with the suit Arthur wears in Justice League in terms of its darker colour palette and overall silhouette, in particular – than it does with the original golden garb. What’s perhaps surprising about this is that there is an apparent logic to the costume’s evolution: the original Aquaman’s comic book look would give way to the updated, dark green and gold suit of Justice League, and transition more seamlessly to this Last Kingdom look. Yet Aquaman is set after the events of Justice League, so the costume design back-and-forth proves a little jarring.

Both Momoa and director James Wan are back for this sequel, with Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Dolph Lundgren, and Temuera Morrison also returning. At the very least, the new suit seems to match the tone promised by Wan, who stated that “Aquaman 2 is very heavily inspired by Planet of the Vampires,” referencing the iconic 1965 Italian horror. “You can take the boy out of horror, but you can never take the horror out of the boy.”

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set to open December 16th, 2022.

Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions Signs First-Look Deal With Universal

Jordan Peele

Get Out and Us director Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions has signed a multiyear TV overall deal with Universal Studio Group. Monkeypaw previously had a first-look television deal with Amazon Studios, which it signed back in 2018.

This new deal brings Monkeypaw under the same roof as Peele’s film production partnership with Universal Pictures, which has already proved extremely fruitful: after all, Universal did just release Nia DaCosta’s Candyman, which opened at No.1 at the U.S. box office and became the first movie directed by a Black woman to ever achieve this milestone. Candyman was co-produced by Monkeypaw and MGM.

Universal Studio Group president Pearlena Igbokwe said of the deal: “The term ‘visionary’ is thrown around all too frequently in our business but in the case of Jordan Peele, it could not be more apt. He brings a clarity of purpose as well as cultural specificity to everything he does, and audiences worldwide have responded. I am truly honoured that Jordan and his partner Win Rosenfeld have chosen our studio as their TV home for the foreseeable future.

Previous TV production by Monkeypaw have included Lovecraft Country, which was nominated for 18 Emmy awards and won the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Horror Series, as well as Peele’s the Twilight Zone reboot, and Amazon’s Al Pacino-starring show Hunters, which is currently in production for its second season.

STAR TREK: PICARD Assimilates Its Borg Queen

Annie Wersching as Borg Queen in Star Trek Picard

Annie Wersching is confirmed to play the Borg Queen in the upcoming second season of Star Trek: Picard, which follows Enterprise Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Sir Patrick Stewart) in the second chapter of his life. The series is expected to premiere in 2022 and will comprise of ten episodes.

Wersching is perhaps best known for her role as FBI Special Agent Renee Walker in the series 24, and for her recurring turn on Bosch’s first season. Interestingly, this won’t be the actress’ first time venturing into the Star Trek universe. Her very first onscreen acting role was in the twentieth episode of Star Trek: Enterprise, titled “Oasis”, in which she played a Kantare named Liana.

This time, Wersching will have a more significant and recurring role as Picard’s old adversary, though the exact nature of her arc is still unknown. Though early fan speculation points to time travel being a key theme of season 2, at this point in time it is still anyone’s guess.

Annie Wersching will be only the third actress to take on the infamous role of the Borg collective’s de facto leader, an alien group distinguished by their cybernetic enhancements and Cube-shaped mode of transport who function as recurring antagonists in Next Generation, Voyager and Star Trek: First Contact. The cyborg matriarch was portrayed by Alice Krige in First Contact and Voyager’s “Endgame” episode, and by Susanna Thompson in earlier Star Trek: Voyager episodes.

Hannibal and Westworld director Vincenzo Natali will write and direct a chapter based on one of Henry Kuttner’s short stories, which will star David Hewlett.

Lastly, Haley Z. Boston will adapt a short story by comics author Emily Carroll, to be directed by Ana Lily Amirpour, the talent behind the incredible Iranian vampire film, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night.

MOONFALL Promises The Moon Will Come To Us In 2022

Roland Emmerich sci fi epic Moonfall teaser trailer starring Halle Berry and Patrick Wilson

From the king of disaster movies, the man who gave us Independence Day, Godzilla, and The Day After Tomorrow, comes a new science fiction epic, Moonfall.

Lionsgate just debuted an official teaser trailer for Roland Emmerich’s latest, in which “a mysterious force knocks the Moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it” in the year 2022.

With mere weeks before impact and the world on the brink of annihilation, NASA executive and former astronaut Jo Fowler (Halle Berry) is convinced she has the key to saving us all – but only one astronaut from her past, Brian Harper (Patrick Wilson) and a conspiracy theorist K.C. Houseman (John Bradley) believe her.

“These unlikely heroes will mount an impossible last-ditch mission into space, leaving behind everyone they love, only to find out that our Moon is not what we think it is.

The teaser plays over an abridged recording of U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s 1962 address at Rice University, Texas about the country’s efforts in the space race, colloquially known as his “We choose to go to the Moon” speech. Funny then that the Moon would choose to come to us instead.

Images of the satellite looming over Earth, gravity-defying tsunami waves, cars dodging explosions and building fragments, people in spaceships and some weird (one would assume, alien) black form going on an astronaut murder spree, flash on the screen.

The teaser may not tell us all that much, but it does well to tease its star-studded cast (which include Michael Peña, Donald Sutherland, Kelly Yu and Charlie Plummer) and some impressive special effects. We can only hope Moonfall is more “Dennis Quaid and Jake Gyllenhaal in Ice Age” than “John Cusack out-driving earthquakes”.

Moonfall is scheduled for release February 4th, 2022.  Check out the teaser trailer below:

This year’s FrightFest has now wrapped, and we can confidently say it was one of the best yet. Anybody following our coverage over the Bank Holiday weekend will now have a bumper crop of new genre titles to add to their watchlists, and while we all have our favourites, it’s time to look at what the festival judges themselves thought were the standouts! Read on for full details…

From the Press Release:

Last night, at a FrightFest awards event at the Cineworld, Leicester Square, writer / director Prano Bailey-Bond, won the 2021 Screen Genre Rising Star Award for her stunning breakout debut feature, Censor.

FrightFest’s Greg Day presents the award to Prano Bailey-Bond

Screen’s Nikki Baughan, said: “With this year’s shortlist being as strong as ever, it takes a truly special talent to be crowned our Screen International / FrightFest Rising Star of 2021. With Censor, writer/director Prano has created a truly exceptional film that leaves an indelible mark on first watch and reveals ever more of itself on multiple viewings; an impressive feat for any filmmaker, let alone one making her feature debut”.

Established by FrightFest and Screen International in 2016 to celebrate the work of emerging UK genre talent, this year’s five-strong short-list embraced the work of three emerging directors and two outstanding performers. The other directors were Leroy Kincaide for his creepily assured feature debut, The Last Rite, and writer/director Eric Steele for Boy #5 – his ultra-low budgeted but emotionally powerful take on the age-old horror myth – the Vampire.

This year, two actresses made the short-list – April Pearson for her enthralling, gutsy performance in Jamie Patterson’s psychological thriller, The Kindred, and UK-based Najarra Townsend for her hypnotic, chilling turn as a hair-dressing serial-killer in Jill Gevargizian’s The Stylist, which she also produced.

Previous winners include Prevenge director Alice Lowe, Double Date writer/actor Danny Morgan, Anna and the Apocalypse star Ella Hunt and Abigail Blackmore, writer-director of the comedy horror film Tales From The Lodge.

Crossroad Pictures Announce Cast for Feature WALKING AGAINST THE RAIN

walking against cast

Following a year of delays due to the global pandemic, award-winning filmmaker Scott Lyus and Crossroad Pictures are finally heading into production on their epic monster movie Walking Against the Rain.

Walking Against the Rain tells the story of two strangers, Blair and Tommy who are navigating their way across a barren landscape in a desperate attempt to find each other. With their only form of communication being two soon-to-die battery-operated radio mics and with a new evil in the shape of ‘The Forsaken’ tracking them down, they must learn to confront loss and rediscover trust in humanity.

We can exclusively reveal the full cast for the very first time. Taking on the lead role of Blair is award-winning actor Sophia Eleni. A multi-talented actor of stage and screen, who has just wowed audiences with her one-woman play On Arriving. This is Sophia’s second time working with the Crossroad Pictures team, having previously starred in their multi-award-winning short Black Mass.

Sophia said of the role: “I am delighted to be working with filmmaker Scott Lyus once again, taking on the lead role of Blair in his ambitious feature film Walking Against the Rain. From the first scene, I was drawn to the post-apocalyptic world and the strong female lead. Blair’s journey of survival, and the characters she meets along the way, explore all facets of humanity and the pursuit of finding nirvana even in the worst of times. I am elated to be working with Scott and the team on this thrilling monster movie.

Taking on the male lead of the picture, Tommy, is one of the UK’s most promising young actors, Reece Douglas. Previous credits include Waterloo Road, The Knife That Killed Me, and Cruel Summer.

Rounding out the stellar cast of British talent is the 2020 STARBURST Fantasy Award Winner for Best Performance Johnny Vivash, Diane Spencer, and Francesca Louise White (who also won Best Performance at the STARBURST Fantasy Awards in 2018). Indie horror fan-favourite James Swanton will be donning the heavy make-up to bring the film’s creatures, The Forsaken, to life.

And if that wasn’t enough to get you excited, The Forsaken will be brought to the screen by Dan Martin and 13FingerFX, via glorious practical effects. Previous credits include Censor, In the Earth, and Possessor. Production begins on August 30th across the British Lake District, for a planned 2022 release.

Official MATRIX 4 Title Revealed, Trailer Coming Soon!

Trinity Neo

As rumoured back in February, the title of the upcoming Matrix sequel will indeed be The Matrix Resurrections. The news was revealed earlier today at the currently unfolding CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

Industry attendees were treated to a trailer as part of Warner Bros’ presentation, meaning we’ll inevitably get to see the full teaser ourselves relatively soon. In it, a few plot details were revealed for the first time – most notably that Keanu Reeves’ character has no memory of his adventures as Neo. (Given how underwhelming  Reloaded and Revolutions were, a lot of fans can certainly empathise!)

Luckily for Neo (or unlucky depending on your red pill vs blue stance), Carrie-Ann Moss is also back as Trinity, and will once again guide him towards his destiny…

A lot is riding on Lana Wachowski’s sequel given the reverence of the 1999 original and the largely negative reaction that its two sequels were met with. But with canonical media such as the excellent animated anthology The Animatrix proving just how excitingly fertile this universe actually is, there’s every hope that the Matrix can be Rebooted successfully and deliver something new.

The countdown to December 22nd has begun!
