Werewolf Gothic Horror THE CURSED Releases Trailer

The Cursed trailer, formerly Eight for Silver

The trailer for The Cursed has finally released online today, after screening in cinemas ahead of this year’s ScreamThe gothic thriller-horror will itself release in cinemas on February 18th, advertising itself as a reimagining of the werewolf legend for a modern-day audience. Set in the late 1800s in rural France, The Cursed sees John McBride, a pathologist, arrive in a remote country village to investigate a wild animal attack, but instead discovers a much greater and more sinister force that has the townspeople in its grip.

The Cursed by Sean Ellis, formerly Eight for Silver

The film, written and directed by Sean Ellis (Anthropoid, Metro Manila), stars Boyd Holbrook (upcoming series The Sandman, Logan, The Predator), Kelly Reilly (Britannia, Eden Lake) and Alistair Petrie (Rogue One, Hellboy). It previously premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival under the title of Eight for Silver.

For those who caught it at the festival however, don’t expect the exact same screening; Ellis commented that “Sundance is always an incredible place to showcase your work. In the time that has followed that valuable experience, we took the opportunity to invigorate the film with an updated score by Lorne Balfe; we changed much of the CGI and decided to put back much of the original in-camera effects. We also elevated elements of the story that pay tribute to the incredible multitude of layers that live within the horror genre.”

PERCY JACKSON Series Is A Go At Disney+

Percy Jackson and the Olympians the lightning thief

Percy Jackson is making his small-screen debut with a Disney+ series order for Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The series comes from Rick Riordan, author of the original book series, and Jon Steinberg, co-creator of the upcoming show The Old Man, and creator of Black Sails. The two will write the pilot, with James Bobin (Alice Through the Looking Glass, Dora and the Lost City of Gold) directing. Casting is currently underway, ahead of a summer production start time.

The books told the story of Percy, a 12-year-old modern demigod who is coming to terms with his newfound, inexplicable abilities. When he is accused by Zeus of stealing his master lightning bolt, Percy find the real thief and return the lightning bolt to Olympus. The YA fantasy novels were previously adapted to film with Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief in 2010 and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters in 2013, starring Logan Lerman in the title role.

President of Disney Branded Television Ayo Davis stated, “With Rick Riordan, Jon Steinberg and Dan Shotz leading our creative team, we’re deep into creating a compelling TV series worthy of the heroic mythological characters that millions of Percy Jackson readers know are well-worth caring about, and we’re eager to invite Disney+ audiences into stories that are true to the blockbuster franchise and full of anticipation, humour, surprise, and mystery.”

Riordan also wrote in a statement that, “We can’t say much more at this stage but we are very excited about the idea of a live-action series of the highest quality, following the storyline of the original Percy Jackson five-book series, starting with The Lightning Thief in season one. Rest assured that Becky [Riordan] & I will be involved in person in every aspect of the show.”

It’s expected that Percy Jackson and the Olympians will begin airing sometime in 2023.

RAYGUNS AND ROCKETSHIPS Smashes its Crowdfunding Target

rayguns target

The latest publication from Korero Press launched on Kickstarter at the beginning of January and has exceeded the original goal almost 16 times over. Rayguns and Rocketships looks to extend Korero’s pedigree of releasing lavish, fantastic books that we love. Award-winning graphic designer, illustrator, comic artist, writer, and typographer Rian Hughes is the man behind the book and we’re excited by the spreads we’ve seen so far. It’s a must-have for fans of beautiful, classic space fantasy art.

From the press release:

Rayguns and rockets! Spacesuited heroes caught in the tentacles of evil insectoid aliens! Who could resist such wonders? Science-fiction paperbacks exploded over the 1940s and ’50s literary landscape with the force of an alien gamma bomb.

Titles such as Rodent Mutation, The Human Bat vs The Robot Gangster, Dawn of the Mutants and Mushroom Men from Mars appeared from fly-by-night publishers making the most of the end of post-war paper rationing. They were brash and seductive – for around a shilling, the future was yours. The stories were often conceived around a pre-commissioned cover and a title suggested by the publisher, and the writers were paid by the word, and sometimes not paid at all. Titles were knocked out at a key-pounding pace, sometimes over a weekend, by authors now lost to literary history (plus a few professionals who could spot an opportunity) who were forced to write under pseudonyms like Ray Cosmic, Steve Future, Vector Magroon or Vargo Statten.

Despite the tight deadlines and poor pay, the books’ cover artists still managed to produce works of multi-hued, brain-bending brilliance, and collected here is an overview of their output during an unparalleled period of brash optimism and experimentation in publishing.

THE ARK Handed Series Order With Dean Devlin As Showrunner

The Ark gets series order, Stargate and Stargate SG-1 alumni to showrun

Syfy has handed a 12-episode straight-to-series order for a new series called The Ark, to be written and produced by Dean Devlin, the man behind such cult classics as Independence Day, Godzilla and Stargate. Keeping it in the family, Stargate SG-1 writer-producer Jonathan Glassner joins Devlin as co-showrunner.

The Ark takes place 100 years in the future, when planetary colonisation missions have begun a necessity to save humanity from extinction. The first of these missions, on a spacecraft known as Ark One, encounters a catastrophic event which causes massive destruction and loss of life aboard. With more than a year still left on their journey before reaching their target planet, the remaining crew must become the best version of themselves in order to survive, despite a lack of life-sustaining supplies and a loss of leadership.

The Ark is a perfect fit for Syfy audiences and we know fans will gravitate to this heart-racing story from Dean Devlin, one of the most accomplished and respected sci-fi writers working today,” said Lisa Katz, President of Scripted Content at NBCU Entertainment and Streaming. “With the recent success of both Resident Alien and Chucky, the network is home to several of the most creative storytellers working in all of television.”

After an intense, seven-bidder auction battle, Deadline reports that Netflix has won the rights to an upcoming Lee Daniels exorcism film. Inspired by true events, Daniels writes and directs the film, reuniting with his Oscar-nominated The United States vs. Billie Holiday star Andra Day, who here plays the mother of an Indiana family whose children become demonically possessed upon moving into a new house.

Day will star with Octavia Spencer, Glenn Close, Rob Morgan (Don’t Look Up), Caleb McLaughlin (Stranger Things) and Aunjanue Ellis (King Richard, Lovecraft Country). The project is being fast-tracked to begin production by summer this year. Lee Daniels is also producing alongside Tucker Tooley and Pam Williams.

The untitled thriller explores the 2011 case involving Latoya Ammons and her three children, who began to experience strange incidents in their Gary, Indiana home. According the reports, the children would levitate, become violent, speak in growls with no memory of the incident after. The case, which was widely covered at the time, involved the police, Department of Child Services, the local hospital and local church. Some, including the police chief Charles Austin, believed Ammons’ accounts – a DCS worker even reported witnessing the youngest boy walking backwards up a wall. A local priest would go on to perform three exorcisms on the family.

The Ammons case was previously the subject of a 2018 documentary horror by Zak Bagans, titled Demon House.

Joshua Jackson To Star In FATAL ATTRACTION TV Series

Fatal Attraction 1987 still featuring Glenn Close as Alex

Adrian Lyne’s 1987 psychosexual thriller, Fatal Attraction, is just the latest in a long list of cult films to get its own television series adaptation.

Lizzy Caplan (Castle Rock, Cloverfield) was previously announced to star as Alex, who was played by Glenn Close in the original. Now, Deadline reports that Joshua Jackson (Fringe, Dr. Death) will play opposite Caplan as Dan Gallagher, portrayed by Michael Douglas in the ’80s movie. Alexandra Cunningham and Kevin Hynes are also aboard to pen the script, while Cunningham also serves as showrunner.

“The series explores the timeless themes of marriage and infidelity through the lens of modern attitudes towards strong women, personality disorders and coercive control,” reads the Paramount+ logline. The six-time Oscar-nominated erotic thriller centred on a married man who has a weekend affair with a woman, who in turn refuses to let the relationship end and becomes dangerously obsessed with him.

Fatal Attraction is just the latest attempt for Paramount to capitalise on their backlog of successful films: other classics receiving series adaptations include Love Story, The Italian Job, and Flashdance.

Netflix Confirms SQUID GAME Will Birth Its Own Universe

Squid Game Universe confirmed by Netflix CEO

“The Squid Game universe has just begun,” promises Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos.

Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has talked repeatedly about making another season of his Korean dystopian drama since Squid Game became Netflix’s most-watched series of all time. “There’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice!” Hwang told the Associated Press late last year. “But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently.”

Squid Game “universe” however, suggests something more than a series renewal. Will there be spin-off kids shows, anime series, films? We won’t know just yet, but let’s hope it all stays in Hwang’s hands and doesn’t become another huge-profits entertainment juggernaut. Or else Netflix really do have a good grip on irony.

The series tells the story of a mysterious invitation that sees 456 participants, all of whom are in dire financial situations, locked in a secret location and forced to play a series of traditional Korean kids games in order to win 45.6 billion won. Those who do not win, however, will die.

Chicken Run

Almost two years after the long-awaited, even long-rumoured Chicken Run sequel was confirmed, we finally have a title. Say hello to Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget! Netflix and Aardman Animations will be hatching this one at some time in 2023.

With the announcement also comes the release of an official plot summary, which is sounding like a remix of Ocean’s Eleven and a reverse Great Escape:

“Having pulled off a death-defying escape from Tweedy’s farm, Ginger has finally found her dream – a peaceful island sanctuary for the whole flock, far from the dangers of the human world. When she and Rocky hatch a little girl called Molly, Ginger’s happy ending seems complete. But back on the mainland the whole of chicken-kind faces a new and terrible threat. For Ginger and her team, even if it means putting their own hard-won freedom at risk – this time, they’re breaking in!”

Dawn of the Nugget will feature a mix of returning characters and new voices, with Thandie Newton and Zachary Levi boarding the project as Ginger and Rocky, respectively (taking over from original cast members Julia Sawalha and Mel Gibson). Their daughter Molly, described as a “true chick-off-the-old-block”, will be voiced by Game of Thrones breakout star and upcoming The Last of Us actress, Bella Ramsey.

Jane Horrocks, Imelda Staunton and Lynn Ferguson are all returning to voice Babs, Bunty and Mac, respectively; they are joined by Josie Sedgwick-Davies, David Bradley, Romesh Ranganathan, Daniel Mays and Nick Mohammed.
