Will Smith & Michael B. Jordan To Star In I AM LEGEND Sequel

I Am Legend movie poster starring Will Smith

In an age of sequels we don’t want, one rises to challenge the tide: a follow-up to I Am Legend. Original star Will Smith, whose performance was widely and rightly praised, has signed on to reprise his role in the sequel to the post-apocalyptic 2007 film. Deadline also confirms that Black Panthers Michael B. Jordan is attached to star alongside Smith, and that the sequel will be written by the original film’s co-writer, Akiva Goldsman (Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Discoveryand I, Robot). Smith, Jordan and Goldsman will be producing.

There’s just one minor hiccup: *insert 15-year-old spoiler alert* Smith’s character, Dr. Robert Neville – a scientist attempting to find a cure for a plague that has killed off most of humanity and turned survivors into vampiric, cannibalistic mutants called Darkseekers – does die at the end of I Am Legend. As of yet, it’s therefore unclear how the actor might return for the sequel.

It’s possible it’ll have something to do with the alternate ending contained in the two-disc special edition DVD, released in 2008, which more closely followed the novel on which the film is based. In this other ending, Neville returns the female Darkseeker to her alpha mate; the Darkseekers spare his life and depart, leaving Neville to realise he has become the monster in the eyes of the infected.

He later abandons his search for a cure and instead joins Anna and Ethan on their journey to a survivors colony. This alternate end to the film, though not part of I Am Legend’s final cut, could well become the set up for a sequel.

No director is yet attached, as the project is still being developed. Francis Lawrence directed the original film, and has since gone on to helm three of the four The Hunger Games films and Red Sparrowwhich also stars Jennifer Lawrence. His next project is the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, a sequel to the Hunger Games trilogy centring on a young Cornelius Snow.

New ALIEN Film Coming From DON’T BREATHE Filmmaker Fede Álvarez

Xenomorph in Alien franchise

Fede Álvarez, the filmmaker behind Don’t Breathe, 2013’s Evil Dead and Netflix’s remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacrehas been tapped to resurrect the Alien franchise. He will write and direct the upcoming sci-fi feature film for 20th Century Studios.

Though next-to-nothing is known about Álvarez’s take on the material, the feature will reportedly be unconnected to the franchise’s previous entries. Ridley Scott, who directed the original 1979 science fiction horror and returned for two further instalments (Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, both prequel films that attempted to tell the origin of the Xenomorphs), will produce via his Scott Free banner.

Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that Álvarez, a long-time and devoted fan of the Alien franchise, casually pitched his take for a film to Scott some years ago. The idea clearly stuck with Scott until late last year, when he reportedly called Álvarez out of the blue and asked him if he was still interested in making the feature.

Obviously, Álvarez was more than keen, and here we are. Stay tuned for further details as we get them!

Kevin Smith is launching a creator-owned line of comics to be published by Dark Horse, called Kevin Smith’s Secret Stash Press – named after his New Jersey comic book store, Jay & Silent Bob’s Secret Stash. “2022 marks the 25th anniversary of my comic book store, Jay & Silent Bob’s Secret Stash. And after a quarter-century of selling comics, the Secret Stash is going to MAKE our own comics!” Smith said in a statement. Per a Hollywood Reporter exclusive, Smith will also serve as writer on the series.

The line will launch this autumn with Masquerade, an eight-issue series about a budding vigilante, followed by the ongoing anthology Quick Stops, which is set in Smith’s View Askewniverse and will include characters from films such as Mallrats, and the Jay & Silent Bob and Clerk films.

Smith may be known most widely for his filmmaking career, but this is hardly the first time the creator has ventured into comic book writing. Over his career, he has tackled the likes of Green Arrow, Batman and Daredevil, for Marvel, DC, and many other publishers. He previously worked with Dark Horse when they published Smith’s prequel to his Masters of the Universe: Revelation animated series.

Smith also has a third Clerks film expected to release this year, courtesy of Lionsgate.

AMITYVILLE IN SPACE, Because Why Not?

Amityville in Space house

Once upon a time (well, beginning in 1979),The Amityville Horror series was an actual, coherent film franchise. Now tough, not so much. Comprising some thirty-odd titles that all peg their legit status on the word “Amityville” – including the unmissable Amityville Vibrator – the next unofficial entry in this film series is Amityville in Space.

The film depicts the ultimate battle against the Amityville curse after the infamous murder house is exorcised from Earth and thus, naturally, reappears in outer space in the year 3015. The newly-released trailer shows the haunted house emerge from a gigantic black hole, which leads the intrepid spacemen to the only feasible course of action: “We need to nuke that black hole!”

Amityville in Space poster

Amityville in Space comes from director Mark Polonia, the mind behind such works as Jurassic Shark 2: Aquapocalypse (basically The Meg), Sharkula (Dracula meets sharks), Sharkenstein, Shark Encounters of the Third Kind (“A group of hostile aliens crash land at the bottom of the ocean, and via mind control use sharks to terrorize a small town”), Bigfoot vs. Zombies, and many more. This latest project doesn’t look to feature sharks – for that, please refer to Amityville Shark House which is currently in post-production – but it does star Titus Himmelberger, Cassandra Hayes, Tim Hatch, Ryan Dalton, and Jeff Kirkendall.

Without further ado, here is the brand-new trailer for Amityville in Space, which releases July 2022:

Euphoria Star Javon Walton Joins THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY

Euphoria star Javon Walton joins cast for Netflix The Umbrella Academy season 3

We heard a rumour… that Euphoria star Javon Walton is joining the cast of The Umbrella Academy season 3. The news – which has been confirmed by Netflix – comes shortly after the 15-year-old actor became the talk of the Twittersphere following Euphoria’s second season finale (no spoilers!), in which he plays Fezco’s (Angus Cloud) unofficially adopted younger brother Ashtray.

Walton also boasts the title of champion boxer and gymnast, having competed in the Junior Olympics and demonstrating his impressive athleticism opposite Dwayne Johnson in a 2018 Under Armour advert. Though the actor’s role in the upcoming third season of Netflix’s Umbrella Academy is unconfirmed, likelihood is he will have ample opportunity to demonstrate both his acting and sporting talents.

Javon Walton confirmed for The Umbrella Academy season 3

The Utopia actor joins an already packed cast, thanks to season 3’s introduction of an alternate timeline in which the Umbrella Academy is now the Sparrow Academy – complete with an entirely new group of superpowered kids. As always, you thank Vanya (or Five, or Reginald, depending on your point of view) for that.

Filming on the third season wrapped in September 2021, so expect the next chapter in the Netflix series to release later this year. The exact date is still to be announced.

Regina Hall Takes On The Ghosts Of The Past In MASTER Trailer

Sundance horror feature Master gets trailer starring Regina Hall

In writer-director Mariama Diallo’s debut feature and horror-thriller Master, three women are trying to find their place at a prestigious, elitist and predominantly white New England university.

Professor Gail Bishop (Regina Hall, Scary Movie franchise, Nine Perfect Strangers) has recently been promoted to the position of “Master” at a residence hall, the first time the college has appointed a Black woman to the post. Determined to breathe new life into a centuries-old tradition and break with the university’s racist past, Gail finds herself wrapped up in the life of Jasmine Moore (Zoe Renee, Black Lightning), a happy and optimistic freshman. Jasmine’s time at Ancaster College soon takes a turn, however, when she is assigned a dorm room rumoured to be haunted.

Regina Hall stars in Prime Video horror feature Master

Things go from bad to worse when Jasmine clashes in the classroom with Liv Beckman (Amber Gray, The Underground Railroad), a professor in the middle of her own racially charged tenure review. As Gail attempts to maintain the peace and fulfil her duties as Master, Ancaster’s pristine facade starts to reveal something far more sinister.

As the official synopsis for Master puts it, “After a career spent fighting to make it into Ancaster’s inner circle, Gail is confronted with the horrifying prospect of what lies beneath, her question ultimately becoming not whether the school is haunted, but by whom.”

Diallo previously wrote and directed the very funny horror short Hair Wolf, which screened at Sundance Festival in 2018. As for Master, it recently premiered at this year’s Sundance, and will soon screen as part of the South by Southwest Film Festival programme.

Master releases in cinemas and on Prime Video globally March 18th. Watch the trailer below:

John Wick Meets Deadpool In BULLET TRAIN Trailer

Brad Pitt as assassin in Bullet Train

Here’s a fun premise: John Wick meets Deadpool in an action-thriller about a Japanese bullet train loaded with professional assassins, fighting it out over a single briefcase.

Throw in some slick visuals and an all-star cast to make any studio drool, and you have Bullet Train, the latest film from David Leitch – appropriately, the co-director of the aforementioned John Wick and solo helmer of Deadpool 2as well as Atomic Blonde and Fast & Furious: Hobbs & ShawThe film is based on Kōtarō Isaka’s 2010 bestselling Japanese novel of the same name, which takes place inside a train going from Tokyo to Morioka.

Now, if that somehow wasn’t enough to get you very excited for its release, Bullet Train is led by none other than Brad Pitt as a goofy and detached assassin.

Joining him are Aaron Taylor-Johnson sporting a Cockney accent (not on the level of Hugh Grant’s turn in The Gentlemen, but close), Brian Tyree Henry (Eternals, Godzilla vs Kong), Zazie Beetz (The Harder They Fall, Joker), Hiroyuki Sanada (The Wolverine, Mortal Kombat), Karen Fukuhara (The Boys), Joey King (Slenderman, Welcome to the Blumhouse), Logan Lerman (Shirley, Hunters), Michael Shannon in an impressive wig (Knives Out, Nine Perfect Strangers), Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny, and Sandra Bullock as Pitt’s handler.

Bullet Train arrives in cinemas July 15th, 2022. Check out the trailer below.

Sandra Oh Stars In UMMA Trailer, Produced By Sam Raimi

Sandra Oh as Amanda in Umma, produced by Sam Raimi

Starring Killing Eves Sandra Oh, the Sam Raimi-produced horror film Umma has just released its official trailer ahead of release this month. Umma (the Korean word for “mother”) follows Amanda (Oh, Invincible) and her daughter (Fivel Stewart, The Haunting of Sharon Tate), who are living a tranquil and technology-free life of beekeeping on an isolated American farm. Yet the idyllic scene is soon disrupted when the remains of her estranged mother arrive from Korea, and Amanda becomes haunted by the thought of turning into her mother.

“Her anger will grow as long as she remains in this box,” Amanda is helpfully warned by the man transporting her mother’s ashes… right before all hell breaks loose. Excitingly, the supernatural horror looks to borrow from Korea’s rich folklore, with the split-second trailer appearance of a Kumiho, a nine-tailed fox spirit that often feeds on human flesh.

Iris K. Kim writes and directs the film in her feature debut, whose cast also includes Dermot Mulroney, MeeWha Alana Lee, Odeya Rush, and Tom Yi.

Umma releases in cinemas March 18th. Check out the creepy trailer below:
