Update on Animated GHOSTBUSTERS Movie

Remember how there’s an animated Ghostbusters movie in development? Well, after several months of radio silence, there’s now an update on that picture.

As per The Hashtag Show, there’s a rumour our there right now that says said animated film would actually be told from the perspective of a ghost. Whether that’s a new ghost, Slimer, or potentially even one of the Ghostbusters themselves (hey, Venkman!), we’ll have to wait and see how this all plays out.

In terms of animated adventures, the famed Ghostbusters team have previously seen action in The Real Ghostbusters from 1986 until 1991 and then in 1997’s Extreme Ghostbusters.

The last we’d heard, Clash of Clan’s Fletcher Moules is directing this to-be-titled animated Ghostbusters effort, and there are still reportedly plans afoot for a new animated series to happen at some point over the next few years.

As ever, expect more on all of this as and when it continues to develop.

BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN to Start Filming Next Year

With a whole host of Universal horror efforts on the way over the next few years, there’s now an update on the new incarnation of Bride of Frankenstein.

While we’d previously heard that the film was loosely booked in for a 2019 release date, director Bill Condon has confirmed that shooting is due to start early next year. Speaking to Forbes, Condon revealed, “I’ve got the same team together that made Beauty and the Beast and we’re building big sets and designing big set pieces, so it’s a pretty big movie. We start on February 1st, 2018 so it’s the early days but just to be here in London, starting to see locations and to talk about sets that we’re building, it’s very exciting.”

Condon continued, “For me, the Hames Whale movie is really right there in the pantheon for me. As you know, the Bride is a character who appears in the last five minutes and then is destroyed, so it’s a way to almost continue the movie that you imagine the movie he might have made the third Frankenstein movie but in 2018.”

Last year’s Tom Cruise-headlined The Mummy was ultimately a disappointment, and it threw up suggestions that Universal may completely scrap their Dark Universe of shared monster movies already. Seemingly not, though.

As well as Bride of Frankenstein, the last we’d heard was that Universal had Johnny Depp signed up to star in The Invisible Man, Javier Bardem to play the monster in Frankenstein, and then Dwayne Johnson was being eyed to star in The Wolfman. Where Bride is concerned, the studio have been regularly pursuing Angelina Jolie to take the titular role, although nothing official has been announced on that front.

Currently, Bride of Frankenstein is set for a February 14th, 2019 release.

Judy Greer in Talks for New HALLOWEEN Movie

Well, this is certainly an interesting development. Yes, as the title suggests, Judy Greer is indeed in talks to join the upcoming Halloween “reinvention”.

As per Deadline, the Jurassic World actress is in negotiations to join the already-announced Jamie Lee Curtis in the David Gordon Green-helmed relaunch for this beloved horror franchise. But the real kicker? The role lined up for Greer is Karen, the daughter of Curtis’ Laurie Strode.

The last we’d heard about this new Halloween entry is that it will seemingly ignore the events of anything post-Halloween II – which we’d presume means Laurie’s son John, as played by Josh Hartnett in Halloween: H20. Given that Laurie was killed off by the infamous Shape in Halloween: Resurrection’s opening moments, clearly that film is being wiped out of this current canon due to Curtis returning as this iconic character. Similarly, it’s believed that the narrative of this new film will completely ignore any of the movies that have happened since 1981’s Halloween II.

The early word on this new film reads:

Laurie Strode comes to her final confrontation with Michael Myers, the masked figure who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night four decades ago.

As well as David Gordon Green on directing duties, he’s also penned the screenplay with Danny McBride. Jason Blum is producing through his Blumhouse banner, with the legendary John Carpenter on board as an executive producer. Shooting on this still-to-be-titled Halloween effort is set to start in South Carolina in just a matter of weeks.

The return of Michael Myers is currently booked in for an October 19th, 2018 release.

Plans Afoot for Non-DCEU DC Movies

With fans having been left scratching their heads and mouthing obscenities at recent developments within Warner Brothers’ DC Extended Universe and beyond – most notably the call to do a Joker origin movie – it’s now been confirmed that the studio is indeed looking to change-up its cinematic DC output.

Following the news that the aforementioned Clown Prince of Crime picture would take place outside of the DCEU and its continuity, not to mention that it wouldn’t feature Jared Leto as the nefarious Joker, it seems as if the plan is to develop more and more DC movies which aren’t hamstrung by the DCEU.

Speaking to Vulture, DC Entertainment’s Diane Nelson explained, “Our intention, certainly moving forward, is using the continuity to help make sure nothing is diverging in a way that doesn’t make sense, but there’s no insistence upon an overall story line or interconnectivity in that universe.”

In fairness, you can quite easily develop plenty of shared realm movies without having to bang your audience over the head with the fact that said film exists within the confines of a larger world. For example, you can develop Matt Reeves’ The Batman without having to feature a cameo from A.N. Other hero. Similarly, much like certain of the Marvel Cinematic Universe efforts, you could just have some nods and winks here and there to the idea that this is indeed a much larger shared world.

What is going to be a tad confusing in that case, though, is why do you need to make a point of making films that are purposely not within that shared DCEU continuity? You want a movie that centres on The Joker? Fine, you can do that movie within the greater DCEU world but just focus purely on the Jester of Genocide. To make a point of developing movies that don’t have any ties to the larger shared world is a danger game, and one that will likely cause mass confusion amongst casual moviegoers. For instance, if your average Joe Bloggs sees a Joker movie fronted by someone who isn’t Jared Leto then he’s likely to just think that Leto has been replaced in the role and that this film is still focussed on the same incarnation of The Joker seen in efforts such as Suicide Squad and the upcoming Gotham City Sirens and Suicide Squad 2. Given that it will then be Leto playing the character in GCS and SS2, that’s when things can get a tad muddled.

Of course, the benefit of doing separate, non-DCEU-based DC films is that it will allow for stories to be shown which don’t have to be tied to what’s already been seen in the DCEU or its continuity. Then again, why bother developing the whole shared universe in the first place if you’re going to then look to deviate from it and create DC films which exist outside of it already?

Anyway, we need a bit of a lie down or a stern caffeine boost after all of that. As ever, though, expect to hear more on all of this as we get it.

MEN IN BLACK Spin-Off Set for 2019

While it seems as if the Men in Black and Jump Street crossover movie is now dead in the water, this weekend brings word that Sony Pictures is in development on a new Men in Black spin-off film.

As per Deadline, the picture won’t feature Will Smith or Tommy Lee Jones, and it will instead look to delve further into the world shown in the original trilogy of movies. Matt Holloway and Art Marcum have been brought in on writing duties, with Sony having already booked in a May 17th, 2019 release that will see the picture open opposite John Wick: Chapter Three.

If you remember, the last we’d heard about anything to do with Men in Black was when the crossover with the Jump Street franchise was labelled too complicated to put together by Jonah Hill last year. Reportedly, that crossover – at the time dubbed MIB 23 – is still in tentative development at Sony, though.

As ever, expect more on all things Men in Black as we get it.

Update on John Carpenter’s Role on the HALLOWEEN Reboot

With the upcoming Halloween reboot having recently won a whole lot of fan approval by bringing back Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode, there’s even more good news for longtime fans of The Shape as John Carpenter is reportedly very much involved in the creative process for the film.

If you remember, Carpenter has long been signed on as an executive producer, with David Gordon Green directing from a script Green’s been working on with Danny McBride. With Jason Blum producing through his Blumhouse Banner, Blum has explained that Carpenter isn’t simply just collecting a paycheque, though, and that he’s very much involved in the creative process.

Speaking to Coming Soon, Blum enthused, “We don’t take any big steps without his approval. So, for instance, hiring David and Danny he approved. He approved their pitch, he approved their first script, he approved bringing back Jamie Lee Curtis. So anytime we make a big creative turn, he’s involved with that and we don’t do it without his blessing. We went to him and asked him to be involved. There was no contractual, financial or any other obligation to have him on this movie. We went back and asked him to join us again.”

To hear that the iconic Horror Master has such an input and say on the new Halloween will certainly assist in helping any doubters feel a little bit easier about this relaunch for the beloved franchise.

With the news of Curtis returning as Laurie Strode, it was revealed that this new film will ignore any of the events post-Halloween II. In the most recent entry in the main franchise before Rob Zombie’s remake and its sequel, Curtis’s Strode was killed off by Michael Myers in the fantastic, heartbreaking opening of Halloween: Resurrection. While that opening scene was brilliantly done, sadly Resurrection as a whole was poorly received by horror hounds, most notably for having Busta Rhymes performing kung fu on Michael. That movie ultimately killed off the series as a whole until Zombie did his own take on Carpenter’s original 1978 tale.

As ever, expect more on this new Halloween as it continues to develop.
