New Details on Ben Mendelsohn’s Villainous CAPTAIN MARVEL Role

Ben Mendelsohn Yon-Rogg Captain Marvel

With Rogue One’s Ben Mendelsohn in the frame to play the ‘big bad’ of 2019’s Captain Marvel, now comes some speculation on just which character he may be playing.

Previously, speculation had the Australian actor pegged as playing the leader of the nefarious alien Skrulls. Now, according to The Hashtag Show, Mendelsohn is set to play Yon-Rogg in the picture.

To those unfamiliar with the character, Yon-Rogg is the longtime rival of the original Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell. Originally, both Yon-Rogg and Mar-Vell were tasked with monitoring Earth to see if the planet is a threat to the Kree. Of course, a twist was a-coming, and that came when Yon-Rogg became jealous of Mar-Vell and had him and his other half in his sights. Deciding to swerve this whole explosive situation, Mar-Vell headed to Earth as a more permanent resident. Famously, it was actually an attack on Mar-Vell from Yon-Rogg which led to the explosion that gave Carol Danvers her powers as she was turned in to Ms. Marvel.

Still with us? We hope so.

Given how Jude Law has already been brought in to play Mar-Vell in Captain Marvel, it makes perfect sense to have Yon-Rogg part of the tale, and Mendelsohn would certainly bring a lot to the role if that is indeed the character that he’s playing. Long signed-on to take the titular Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel gig is Room’s Brie Larson, with the character set to make her debut in May 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War.

For those not familiar with the Carol Danvers character, she debuted back in 1968, initially a member of the US air force before later becoming Ms. Marvel in 1977 following a previous tangle with explosive Kree technology. In 2012, Danvers was given a “promotion” to the mantle of Captain Marvel. As part of her powers, she’s able to project and absorb energy as well as having the usual superhuman strength and speed not to mention the ability to fly.

To be directed by Mississippi Grind’s Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel is currently set for a March 6th, 2019 release.

Daphne and Velma Movie in Development

Daphne Velma Scooby-Doo

Well, this one has come a tad out of left field. And as we’re longtime fans of Scoobert here at Moonbase Alpha, this is certainly news that has our attention. Yes, as the title suggests, a live-action Daphne and Velma movie is happening.

As per Variety, the film – seemingly titled simply Daphne and Velma – has Shades of Blue’s Sarah Jeffery and Last Man Standing’s Sarah Gilman signed on as Daphne and Velma, respectively. In addition to this, the picture is actually already shooting ahead of a 2018 release. Jennifer and Ashley Tisdale’s Blondie Girl Productions and Warner Brothers are behind the feature, with Olive and Mocha: First Kiss‘ Suzi Yoonessi directing from a script by Kyle Mack and Caitlin Meares.

The early word on Daphne and Velma reads:

The mystery-solving teens are best friends but have only met online – until Daphne transfers to Velma’s school, Ridge Valley High, stocked with high-tech gadgetry by the school’s benefactor, tech billionaire Tobias Bloom. While their peers vie for a coveted internship at Bloom’s company, Daphne and Velma try to uncover the reason why the school’s brightest students are disappearing – only to emerge again in a zombie-fied state.

Yep, that means it’s a zombie-driven movie that’s centred on Daphne and Velma before their time as part of the famed Mystery Inc. gang.

As ever, expect more on Daphne and Velma as we get it.

New CHILDREN OF THE CORN to be Released Early Next Year?

Children of the Corn: Runaway

We’ve all got our own personal favourites when it comes to horror franchises, and some longtime genre fans have quite the soft spot for the Children of the Corn series. And now, it appears we may have an idea of when the next entry in the franchise will arrive.

Over at Dimension Films, they’re currently waiting to give release dates to two new instalments in longstanding franchises, those being Children of the Corn: Runaway and Hellraiser: Judgment. Runaway star Marci Miller has recently made some interesting comments over on her Instagram page, first saying that the film was coming soon before then replying to a fan that we should expect to see the picture released in February or March of 2018.

The official blurb on Children of the Corn: Runaway reads:

Runaway tells the story of a young woman named Ruth, who finds herself pregnant after escaping a murderous child cult in a small Midwestern town. Ruth struggles to spare her son the horrors of her childhood while trying to outrun her past.

Of course, this is far from official, but it’s at least some encouraging news for those eager to see the John Gulager-helmed new entry in the Children of the Corn franchise.

David Fincher Updates on WORLD WAR Z 2

World War Z Poster

All has been a tad quiet lately on the long-announced World War Z sequel, but director David Fincher has finally given an (albeit brief) update on the follow-up.

Speaking to Little White Lies, Fincher explained, “We’re trying. A lot of stones have been laid. We’re just deconstructing it right now against the mythology that exists to see where we can go.”

And that was it. We said it was brief, right? Given the delays and spinning of wheels on World War Z 2, it’ll be encouraging to many genre fans to hear that the film is at least still happening, although that’s about all we know on the project right now.

Of course, that first World War Z movie also famously suffered from some huge delays, most notably seeing large parts of the film actually completely removed and major chunks of the second half rewritten and reshot. As such, you can maybe understand why Paramount would be keen to take their time in order to avoid such reworkings for the sequel. Right now, all that we know is that Fincher is directing and that Brad Pitt is returning to star.

Expect more on all things World War Z 2 as it continues to develop.

Wilson Bethel Joins DAREDEVIL: SEASON 3; Potentially Playing the Sin-Eater

Wilson Bethel Sin-Eater Daredevil Marvel

While we already know that Vincent D’Onofrio will be back as Wilson Fisk, aka the Kingpin, for the third season of Marvel’s Daredevil, there’s now some news on somebody who’ll be having a pivotal role to play between the larger-than-life villain and Charlie Cox’s Hornhead.

As per Variety, Hart of Dixie and Generation Kill’s Wilson Bethel has joined the show as an FBI agent who will have a critical part to play in the ongoing battle between Fisk and Daredevil. A series regular gig for this new season, there’s already rumours that this FBI agent could well end up being Stanley Carter – a comic book character better known as the nefarious Sin-Eater. Carter was an NYPD officer and former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who ended up going insane due to an experimental drug. From there, he decided to punish those he felt had sinned, most famously killing off one of Spider-Man’s closest allies, Jean DeWolff.

Details are pretty sketchy on Season 3 of Marvel’s Daredevil at this juncture, although we known that Deborah Ann Woll’s Karen Page and Elden Henson’s Foggy Nelson will be joining the returning D’Onofrio and Cox.

With The Man in the High Castle’s Erik Oleson taking over showrunner duties, Marvel’s Daredevil is set to return to Netflix at a to-be-confirmed date next year.

Bill Goldberg to Appear in THE FLASH

Bill Goldberg WWE Champion

The CW’s Arrowverse is no stranger to the world of professional wrestling – sorry, sports entertainment (damn you, Vince McMahon!) – and yet another famed grappler is heading to the network’s shared DC realm.

Multiple-time World Champion Bill Goldberg – who last competed in the squared circle back at April’s WrestleMania 33 – has seemingly confirmed he’ll be appearing in two episodes of The Flash.

Known affectionately as Da Man, Goldberg responded to a fan on social media to confirm his involvement in the Grant Gustin-headlined Scarlet Speedster show.

As mentioned, this isn’t the first time that the worlds of the Arrowverse and the wrestling game have crossed over, with current ROH Champion Cody Rhodes having appeared in several episodes of Arrow in addition to 11-time World Champ Adam “Edge” Copeland having played Atom Smasher in The Flash. Elsewhere, the Emerald Archer himself, Stephen Amell has actually competed in a WWE ring, teaming with Neville to defeat Rhodes and Wade Barrett back at SummerSlam 2015.

No further details are known right now on Goldberg’s involvement in The Flash, but expect more on this as we get it.

UFO TV Series to Explore “Britain’s Roswell”

Rendlesham UFO

For many longtime UFO enthusiasts out there, the term “Britain’s Roswell” will instantly conjure up memories of a slew of unexplained incidents in Suffolk. And now, said happenings are to be brought to life in a new TV series.

As per Variety, Eleventh Hour Films and Sony are developing a show dubbed Rendlesham. The incidents themselves initially began back in December 1980 around the RAF Woodbridge site in Suffolk, England. After strange lights were seen descending into Rendlesham Forest, further investigation found a metallic object shining in the middle of the bushy landscape. When approached, said object darted off through the forest in a flurry of lights, and the next day saw a triangular shape left in the forest clearing.

Rendlesham will span the time period from that 1980’sighting right through to the present day and beyond, and Doctor Who’s Joe Ahearne will be directing the series. Eve Gutierrez and Jill Green are on board to produce for Eleventh Hour Films.

On this news, Ahearne enthused, “When Eleventh Hour Films drew my attention to this extraordinary piece of British and American history it pressed all my buttons, and I think it will do the same for a wide audience.”

Gutierrez added, “Joe is a master storyteller with a long-standing fascination for science fiction. Now working with Sony Pictures Television, we are looking forward to bringing this timely, other-worldly story to the global market.”

Expect more on Rendlesham as it continues to develop.

Full Look at Joe Manganiello as Deathstroke

Joe Manganiello Deathstroke Justice League

We’ve know for a while that Joe Manganiello was signed-up as the DC Extended Universe’s Slade Wilson, aka the totally badass Deathstroke, and now we’ve been given our first look at Manganiello in his full Deathstroke get-up.

We should maybe make a quick mention here that a Justice League spoiler of sorts lies ahead, so you might want to turn back if you’ve not yet had chance to check out Warner Brothers’ coming together of some of DC’s finest figures.

You’ve been warned…

SPOILER

Right, let’s get it out there, the post-credits Justice League scene saw Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor having a meeting with none other than Slade Wilson. While that meeting alluded to the forming of an alternative, villainous league, we didn’t really get that great of a look at Manganiello in full Deathstroke garb. Luckily for us, however, Manganiello himself has taken to social media to given us a better look at his Slade.

Joe Manganiello Deathstroke Justice League

Where Slade Wilson turns up next, though, is a little up in the air. Previously, the character was pegged for an appearance in the main portion of Justice League rather than just a cameo, post-credits appearance, and then he was also announced as being the villain of The Batman.

Of course, The Batman has had its fair share of issues lately. With constant rumours of Ben Affleck departing the Caped Crusader gig before that picture gets rolling, there have also been plenty of reports out there that say director Matt Reeves is looking to have a different villain as the ‘big bad’ of the film, thus giving Deathstroke the boot.

While his battle with the World’s Greatest Detective may or may not happen in The Batman, what we do know for certain is that Deathstroke is getting his own movie regardless. Even more encouraging, Gareth Evans of The Raid fame is writing and directing that picture; which in itself is news that has us all a tad excited here at Moonbase Alpha.

So yeah, there’s nothing particularly new to report on the Deathstroke front, but just look at him! That right there just screams Slade Wilson, and seeing where things go for this fan favourite villain-cum-antihero is most certainly one of the bright points of the DCEU right now.
