PRETTY BOY Returns in Sequel to Marcel Walz’s BLIND

Here’s a belated Valentine’s Day gift to fans of Marcel Walz’s lurid slasher film Blind. The director has released a poster and images from its upcoming sequel, Pretty Boy. For the uninitiated, Blind was the story of an actress (Sarah French) struggling to put her life back together following a laser eye surgery gone wrong. Oh, and the demented serial killer slinking around the house, murdering her friends and the occasional sushi delivery guy.

Pretty Boy offers up more of the same, and then some more on top of that: A Valentine’s Day party gone terribly wrong, and Pretty Boy running amok with his butcher’s knife. Expect disco lights, glitter and gore. French and Jed Rowen return as the actress and her stalker, with Heather Grace Hancock, Devanny Pinn, Robert Rusler and Maria Olsen set to co-star.

Look out for more information as we get it, but until then, keep the excitement at a high with the following images from the movie:

The Cinematic Worlds of BATMAN ’89 and SUPERMAN ’78 to Return in All-New DC Series

batman 89

Batman and Superman return… again! Tim Burton’s Batman and Richard Donner’s Superman will be back, in two new digital-first series by DC comics.

Batman ’89 and Superman ’78 will see Michael Keaton and Christopher Reeve don their iconic crimefighting gear to pick up where the movies left off. Except this time, on the comic book page. Well, the formula proved popular for Adam West’s Batman and Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman. With both series landing in July 2021, this is an exciting return to two iconic iterations of our favourite heroes.

Screenwriter Sam Hamm and artist Joe Quinones will tackle the Dark Knight’s return; promising not only more Selina Kyle but also the introduction of a new Robin and the birth of a terrifying new Two-Face. Will Robin be styled on a young Marlon Wayans? Will Billy Dee Williams finally get his dues? DC have revealed little thus far, although sketches by Quinones on Twitter did hint that the character design would be partly influenced by The Animated Series; finally giving Alfred a moustache and making Commissioner Gordon a little more… imposing. And hey, is that Prince, all dressed up as the Joker? Come on, let’s get nuts!

Meanwhile, Rob Venditti and Wilfredo Torres will take on the Man of Steel in Superman ’78. Even less has been revealed about their vision of Donner’s Metropolis – but it’s to be set before Superman II, in a world still adjusting to its Superman, with Lois Lane still clueless as to Clark Kent’s real identity.

More news is set to drop on Batman ’89 and Superman ’78 over the coming months. Once again, you’ll believe that a man can fly. Or dance with the devil in the pale moonlight.

More Casting News For GAME OF THRONES Prequel

house of the dragon game of thrones

Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon has added four more actors to its core cast. Joining Paddy Considine, Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith, and Emma D’Arcy are now joined by Steve Toussaint, Rhys Ifans, Eve Best, and Sonoya Mizuno.

Based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood – a companion book to the A Song of Ice and Fire series – House of the Dragon is said to be set 300 years prior to the events of Game of Thrones and will tell the story of Daenery’s ancestors in a time when House Targaryen faces its downfall. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time’s Steve Toussaint has been cast as Lord Corlys Velaryon, otherwise known as ‘The Sea Snake’; Nurse Jackie’s Eve Best will in turn play his wife, Princess Rhaenys Velaryon, a dragon rider and the ‘Queen Who Never Was’, who was passed over as heir to the Targaryen throne in favour of her cousin.

Meanwhile, Rhys Ifans has been cast as Otto Hightower, Hand to King Viserys Targaryen (Considine). Ex Machina actress Sonoya Mizuno joins the cast as Mysaria, a trusted ally of Prince Daemon Targaryen (Smith), the heir to King Viserys.

House of the Dragon is still slated for a 2022 release, it was recently confirmed.

Florence Pugh To Play Killer Sex Robot in DOLLY

florence pugh dolly black widow

Florence Pugh, Oscar nominee and star of Midsommar, Fighting With My Family, and the long-anticipated MCU Black Widow, has been tapped to play a killer sex robot in Apple Studios’ upcoming project Dolly. Vanessa Taylor, who wrote the screenplays for Divergent and Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water and was a co-executive producer on HBO’s Game of Thrones, will be penning the script alongside Drew Pearce. Pearce is known for his work on high-profile blockbusters such as Iron Man 3, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, and Fast & Furious: Hobbes & Shaw.

The film is inspired by a short story from popular American author Elizabeth Bear, a sci-fi courtroom drama where an artificially intelligent “companion doll” kills its billionaire owner only to plead not guilty and demand a lawyer. The police must then work out whether the AI was the murder weapon, or the murderer.

Though Apple Studios did win the bidding war to secure Dolly, it’s important to note that the project is not yet greenlit. The script is so far unwritten, and a director still needs to be attached. Regardless, with an intriguing premise, Pugh’s name attached, and a fantastic writing team, Dolly has all the hallmarks of a fascinating science fiction film.

Rian Johnson Provides Update on His STAR WARS Trilogy….

rian johnson

Star Wars has always divided its fanbase, right from the release of its first sequel in 1980. It’s largely forgotten now, but The Empire Strikes Back, the film that many consider to be the best of all 12 theatrically released movies, was certainly not met with universal acclaim. (STARBURST’s very own review by the legendary critic John Brosnan slammed it.) Return of the Jedi was despised by many for its perceived pandering to merchandisers, The Phantom Menace for Jar-Jar, Attack of the Clones for a clunky mishandling of a pivotal romance, Revenge of the Sith for “Noooo”, The Force Awakens for leaning too heavily on the past, Rogue One for underdeveloped characters, Solo for being unnecessary, and The Rise of Skywalker for trying to satisfyingly service so much plot while adequately serving none. We’ve all heard these criticisms ad infinitum, yet in every instance, each film commands millions of fans worldwide that will vehemently disagree with that take. It’s a testament to the scope of storytelling that the Star Wars property allows that it can appeal to so many generations, and within those generations, individual film-fans with such varying tastes.

The Last Jedi is no different or special in that it mobilized a subsection of fans to decry it, and it’s noticeable that the backlash is now lessening the further away we get, and more elements are fleshed out in comic books, novels, and The Mandalorian itself, something that has benefitted every film from the original onwards.

That said, the following development will entirely depend on your current relationship with TLJ in how you’ll react to it. For some, this will be the greatest Star Wars news they’ll hear this year, for others, they’ll be reaching for the Death Sticks. But as long as we don’t lose sight of the fact that whichever camp we belong to, we’re all reading this page for one reason and one reason alone: we love Star Wars.

Writer Sariah Wilson recently conducted an interview with The Last Jedi’s Rian Johnson, and while the piece is yet to be released, she did provide a little advance insight on Twitter – in particular, an interesting update on the filmmaker’s plans to create a new Star Wars trilogy. The secretive project was announced one month before the release of Episode VIII in 2017, but as the controversy over that film’s narrative heated up post-release, bubbling over for years to come, the new trilogy’s viability was frequently questioned. By the time company President Kathleen Kennedy unveiled Lucasfilm’s huge slate of Star Wars films and TV shows in development late last year, it was understandably considered to be dead in the water due to its absence. But not so, reports Wilson: “Rian’s trilogy is still on. No dates or timelines because he has other projects going on, but it is happening.”

With other films lined up first (only one of which we’re currently privy to – Knives Out 2), it means that this trilogy is still a long way off, but it’s exciting / worrying [delete as applicable depending on your TLJ stance] to hear that Johnson hasn’t lost hope of revisiting the galaxy’s greatest mythology which he helped beautifully enrich / flush down the toilet [delete as applicable depending on your TLJ stance].

We’ll have more on this as it develops, but in the meantime… may the Force be with you.

To get up to speed on all the other Lucasfilm projects in development, read our comprehensive rundown The Future of STAR WARS.

John Brosnan may have famously disliked THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, but for its 40th anniversary last year, other STARBURST writers got together to talk about what they loved about it. Read Commemoration of an Empire.

It’s Not Quite GREMLINS 3… but Gizmo is Back!

gremlins 3

If you’re anything like us, you’ve desperately wanted to see a Gremlins 3 for decades now, and though we know that Amblin are quietly beavering away on an animated series (which with any luck will appear sometime this year), so far talk of a live-action return for Gizmo and co has never progressed beyond the rumour stage. So while this news doesn’t add to the latter, it does provide our first glimpse of Giz since 1990’s Gremlins 2: The New Batch in the form of a just-released US advert for Mountain Dew. Even better, Zach Galligan’s Billy Peltzer returns too! Given how perfect the practical effects are here, could this hint at more to come? Or is it a meaningless cash-grab like those atrocious E.T. ads where he was trying to shift broadband?

Watch it below and let’s all start demanding Gremlins 3 happen ASAP!

SOLO Stars Re-teaming for MR & MRS SMITH Reboot

Though Doug Liman’s lavish 2005 movie Mr & Mrs Smith, starring a then-loved-up Angela Jolie and Brad Pitt, ultimately failed to cement itself in the public consciousness, the high concept driving it is still clearly ripe for further exploration. The story of married assassins going through a rough patch, made worse when they’re both hired to execute their significant other, is a gift of an idea, and though plans to expand it with sequels and a TV show didn’t pan out, Hollywood hasn’t given up on mining it further, with the news that Amazon will take a shot at making that spin-off series finally happen for their Prime Video streaming service.

That’s not the important part though; the real reason STARBURST is encouraged by this development is that the series will see a reunion of Solo: A Star Wars Story duo Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge in the Pitt and Jolie roles. Both are fierce talents, best known for such favourites as Community and Killing Eve, but we can’t help get a kick out of the thought that Lando and L3-37 finally hooked up. Even though that relationship will ultimately see them at each other’s throats…

solo

Stepping in for showrunner duties will be writer Francesca Sloane (The First). Sloane will work alongside Waller-Bridge herself in the writing and development.

While we weren’t exactly super fans of the original, the credentials here all point to this assassin tale being a hit!
