Rose Leslie & Theo James to star in Steven Moffat’s THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE

Theo James and Rose Leslie for The Time Traveler's Wife on HBO, by Steven Moffat

Game of Thrones alum Rose Leslie and the Divergent franchise’s Theo James have been tapped as the leads in The Time Traveler’s Wife, a HBO drama series based written by Steven Moffat.

Moffat, who worked as a head writer on Doctor Who and co-created Sherlock, adapted the series from Aubrey Niffenegger’s best-selling novel. HBO landed the project back in 2018 after a multiple-outlet bidding war that reportedly included Amazon.

I read Audrey Niffenegger’s The Time Traveler’s Wife many years ago, and I fell in love with it,” Moffat explained at the time of the order. “In fact, I wrote a Doctor Who episode called ‘The Girl in the Fireplace’ as a direct response to it… The brave new world of long form television is now ready for this kind of depth and complexity. It’s a story of happy ever after – but not necessarily in that order.

From the information so far released by HBO, this series sounds very different from The Time Traveler’s Wife’s big screen adaptation in 2009, which starred Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams.

Leslie’s character Clare is described as “fiery, clever, and unstoppable – and for most of her life she’s had an amazing secret. Since she was 6, she has had an imaginary friend… who appears in the woods behind her house and tells her tales of the future… [As the years pass] she starts to realise her friend is not imaginary – he’s a time traveller, visiting from the future.” One day Clare would meet a young man named Henry, who she’ll know well but who won’t have yet met her, and she would become the time traveller’s wife.

Henry DeTamble is played by James. He “has been a time traveller since he was 8. It’s not a superpower, it’s a condition – he can’t help it… His life is a roller coaster of constant danger and white-knuckle survival. Until one day he meets a beautiful redhead in the library where he works. Her name is Clare Abshire and though he’s never seen her before, she claims to have known him all her life.

With Moffat serving as both writer and executive producer of the series, The Time Traveler’s Wife will follow the relationship between Clare and Henry as they grow to know each other and learn to handle Henry’s ability.

Helene Udy Set to Star in THE HAUNTING OF THE LADY-JANE

Helene haunting lady-jane

The Haunting of Lady-Jane, the latest film from director Kemal Yildirim, which is currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter, has added Helene Udy (from 1981’s My Bloody Valentine) to the cast list.

The synopsis of The Haunting of the Lady-Jane is:

The peaceful waterways of the English countryside are plagued by legends of ‘RÀN’; a water spirit who collects the bodies of sinful people along the river. After a disturbing incident left Lily emotionally scarred and estranged from her parents she decides to begin her life again. Now a socially aware writer on female empowerment, she decides to tour the country with Zara, whose journey of self-identity has led her to fully explore life. Lily met Zara through her blog, they decide to become travel companions. They see a chance to travel on a barge on the English canals.

Accepting an offer of a free passage up the British canals, Lily and Zara find themselves isolated with Willard, a religiously obsessed hulking man whose past is murkier than the canal waters. The threesome’s journey upriver becomes increasingly bizarre and dangerous as Willard’s fascination with canal ghosts’ surfaces, and the spirit known as ‘RÀN’ torments them on their journey.

Written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Kemal Yildirim, the film’s original screenplay blends the traditional folklore ghost story with modern day themes of identity and the new female journey. Setting the project in rural England was a conscious choice. Taking inspiration from classic British literature, in particular M.R. James, Vernon Lee and the 1989 production of the ‘Woman in Black’. The story will focus on the folkloric elements of the British countryside whilst bringing a fresh new horror icon to the screen, making the audience feel the dread of the spirit RÀN.

Director Kemal Yildirim said of the project: “The film’s themes of shame, guilt and identity are woven into the landscape of this film. The folklore/horror films and TV shows I grew up with have had a massive impact on my own journey as a film maker. I am a huge horror fan and would really love for all horror fans to get involved and support our crowd funding campaign. We have some fantastic perks which we feel people will like. The crowdfunder is hugely important in making this film so all pledges of support would be appreciated. This film will be drenched in atmosphere and will have scares that the horror fans will hopefully really appreciate, for us telling a great story is key and making sure we give the audience an experience they won’t forget.

First Images Released for DEXTER Season 9

dexter

The first look of Michael C Hall as Dexter in Season 9 has been revealed by Showtime. And it’s… underwhelming to say the least.  In the two new images released below, we see Dexter in a dark room looking sad and contemplative as he stares into the camera. In another, he has a slight smirk, perhaps envisioning the fate of his latest nemesis Kurt Caldwell, played by cult favourite Clancy Brown.

Sadly, he hasn’t adopted a new image à la Hall’s new wave band Princess Goes To The Butterfly Museum, but thankfully he has shaved off the pathetic bumfluff we saw him with at the end of Season 8. That beard was not worthy of a lonely lumberjack, sir.

Expect a teaser trailer soon, ahead of Season 9’s premiere later this year.

Obsession gets a makeover in The Stylist, a deliciously twisted slice of female-led psychological horror, nominated for the New Visions Award for Best Motion Picture at the 2020 Sitges International Film Festival and based on co-writer/director Jill Gevargizian’s award-winning short film of the same name. We all dream of being someone else… but for Claire (Najarra Townsend, Contracted), that dream goes from an obsession to a living nightmare. Hairstylist by day, serial killer and collector of scalps by night, Claire’s lonely existence is thrown into turmoil when her regular client, Olivia (Brea Grant, After Midnight; director of 12 Hour Shift), asks her to style her hair for her wedding day. Increasingly fixated on Olivia’s seemingly flawless life, Claire vows to lock up her scalp collection and change her ways for good – only to discover that repressing your deadly desires is easier said than done… Featuring striking visuals and pitch-perfect performances from its talented cast, The Stylist offers viewers “a delicately deranged glimpse into social anxiety and loneliness” (Slashfilm) – a bold and mesmerising debut feature from a filmmaker to watch. Cine-Excess Launch Film Channel

cine-excess launch

Cine-Excess, the annual film festival and conference that takes an academic look at genre and extreme films, is launching their own channel. The film channel will be available on Amazon Prime UK on March 15th.

The channel will be dedicated to highlighting new talent in cult cinema, with a focus on diversity. The first three features to be available will be Black Lake (2020), directed by K / Xi, Fornacis (2018), from French director Aurélia Mengin, and Iranian director Suzan Iravanian’s Leakage (2018).

BLACK LAKE

Fuses regional myth with horror movie traditions to tell the story of Aarya, a young female artist who is gifted a red scarf, sent by her aunt from her recent travels to Pakistan. As a result, she is haunted by a Churail: a demonic and malevolent South-Asian Witch and is forced to face the devastating cycles of violence the Churail brings with her.

Black Lake Full-Length Trailer from BadWolfFilms on Vimeo.

Director K / XI (above) comments: “It was important for me to have that recognised and elevated by a distributor who saw the importance of the film. Not just violence against women in countries like South-Asia, gender, sexuality, art and culture, but by also looking at how a particular blend of cinematic techniques has been incorporated to conjure up a distinctly intimate yet terrifying vision.

FORNACIS

A sensory, hypnotic road movie that evokes the experimental imagery of Jean Rollin’s 1970s vampire cinema tells of the dramatic romance between two women, Anya and Frida. Obsessed by the death of her betrothed, Anya is thrown into a world of confusion, in which Frida’s memories mix dangerously with reality, causing an oscillation between the solitude of reality and the surrealism of thwarted desires.

(Trailer is NSFW, but you’re probably working from home anyway, so you can risk it.)

Director Aurelia Mengin (above) said “The enthusiasm of the Cine-Excess team towards FORNACIS has been overwhelming and I am extremely proud to be a part of this amazing adventure.

LEAKAGE

Jale, a middle-aged woman discovers that crude oil is leaking out of her body. This unusual yet empowering phenomenon awakens the hope of a better future in her. On the other hand, it triggers uncertainty and paranoia in the male figures that surround her.

Director Suzan Iravanian (above) said: “I first questioned the role of the female body as a commodity and then abducted from it its usual features and created a new type of body which is the product of our society and the petro-dynamic twists in the Middle East. Cine-Excess and its Digital Film Channel instils a new form of cinephile devotion in the cinema fans.

The three films will also be included in the online Cine-Excess Distinctive Voices Festival, which takes place on March 12th – 14th.

Dungeons and Dragons Returns to Ravenloft

Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft Cover

Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft has been announced as the next setting book for Dungeons and Dragons Fifth Edition. It will contains details as to how to use the world of Ravenloft in your Dungeons and Dragons fantasy games.

Ravenloft is D&D’s horror setting. Inspired by the classic scenario of the same name, Ravenloft is a game of gothic horror and fantasy. Though fifth edition has touched on horror before with the adventure book ‘Curse of Strahd’, this is the first time the full horrors of the Domains of Dread has come to fifth edition.

Unlike other worlds in D&D, Ravenloft is unrelentingly gothic and dark, which is probably why it’s so beloved by fans. The land is split into various Domains, each with their own unique challenges and monsters. This new book will allow players to create characters with lineages tied to vampires, undead, and hags, an option that has recently been extensively play-tested by the community. Horror-themed subclasses will be introduced as well as special powers called Dark Gifts which may be much more dangerous than the character would like.

The book will also detail how to adapt your current campaign into something a bit darker, just in case you think your players are finding things a little too easy. For DM’s with less time on their hands, the book features over 30 Dread Domains to plonk your players into.

“I’m a huge fan of all things horror, so it was an absolute thrill to frame this book around bringing frightening elements like mummy lords, cosmic terrors, and urban legends to more D&D tables,” said Wes Schneider, senior game designer and lead designer of Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft. “Working with exciting new voices in horror and visual artists like D&D concept artist Shawn Wood was essential to make sure we’re updating the aesthetic for today’s fans while staying true to the roots of Ravenloft.

The new hardback will feature the correspondence of Rudolph Van Richten and other heroes of Ravenloft, such as Ezmerelda d’Avenir and the Weathermay-Foxgrove Twins, introducing a new generation of monster hunters to the Lands of the Mists. Some of the Domains of Dread might feel eerily familiar to fans such as Lamordia, which explores the horror of experimentation on creating undead beings from deceased body parts by Dr. Viktra Mordenheim. Other horrors include the surreal, fairytale masquerades of Dementlieu; treachery in the war-torn rain forests of Kalakeri; and the endless zombie hordes of Falkovnia. Van Richten’s Guide includes rules and advice for DMs to create custom domains and Darklords by portraying established horror tropes or whatever special new blend of terror they can imagine.

Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft features a cover by Anna Podedworna available everywhere and an alternate cover by Scott M. Fischer only available through game stores.

Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft will be available online and from your friendly local games shop from May 18th, 2021.

Tim Burton To Direct WEDNESDAY ADDAMS Netflix Series

wednesday netflix

Everyone’s favourite spooky gal Wednesday Addams is making her return to the screen with her very own, eponymous Netflix show. The live-action, eight-episode series will be directed by none other than Tim Burton, in his television debut. Who better to bring this goth icon to life than a director so renowned for his gothic fantasy and horror comedy films, including Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Corpse Bride, and Sweeney Todd, to name but a few.

Netflix has described Wednesday as a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ time as a student at Nevermore Academy. The coming-of-age series’ initial synopsis states that Wednesday will follow the heroine’s attempts to “master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorised the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parent 25 years ago – all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships of the strange and diverse student body.”

First conceived of by Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar, the duo will serve as showrunners and promise to give us “a fresh way into this story”, according to Netflix’s Teddy Biaselli. As the streaming giant only just announced the news, there has been no word yet on casting or a potential release date, so be sure to stay tuned for future developments.

Are You Ready to Learn THE SECRETS OF THE SITH?

sith

The dead speak!

And type, apparently. Seems we now know why Palpatine was too busy to show his wrinkly kisser in between Return of the Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker – he was too busy writing a book, The Secrets of the Sith.

No doubt irked by the popularity of The Secrets of the Jedi released last Christmas, the Sith Lord put pen to paper (before he was destroyed by his granddaughter, of course) and wrote his own rebuttal that will educate readers (in particular younglings) on all manner of arcane facts about the now (hopefully) extinct dark-side enthusiasts.

Hop over to StarWars.com for the full announcement on the book (actually written by Mark Sumerak, but the above is how it’s cutely presented to preserve canon) coming this August.

Grab yourself or a youngling in your life a copy of The Secrets of the Jedi via the link below – you’ll also be helping support STARBURST at the same time!

Joaquin Phoenix to star in Ari Aster’s DISAPPOINTMENT BLVD.

joaquin phoenix

Ari Aster, writer-director of critically-acclaimed horrors Midsommar and Hereditary, will be teaming up with Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix on his newest project, titled Disappointment Blvd.

Having provided a home for both of Aster’s feature films, it is likely no surprise that A24 is confirmed to finance and produce this upcoming project. Aster and Lars Knudsen are also attached to produce under their Square Peg banner.

Though little is known about the horror filmmaker’s most recent endeavour, the story has been described as “an intimate, decades-spanning portrait of one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time.” Aster had mentioned back in July 2020 that his next movie would be a “nightmare comedy” and that it was “gonna be four-hours long”. Whether or not Disappointment Blvd. is the same movie Aster was referring to remains to be seen.

This will likely mark Phoenix’s first project since his Oscar-winning performance in Todd Phillips’ Joker. Though he will be next seen in Mike Mills’ C’mon C’mon (which will also be distributed by A24), shooting had taken place in 2019 prior to receiving the Academy Award for Best Actor.

Phoenix also has a project in the works with director Ridley Scott: Kitbag will see him star as Napoleon Bonaparte, though production is unlikely to begin before 2022. This will mark the first time Phoenix and Ridley have reunited since Gladiator in 2000. Considering Phoenix’s reputation for being highly selective with his projects, and paired with the fact the actor is in high demand since his portrayal of the Clown Prince of Crime, his attachment to Disappointment Blvd. is a promising endorsement of Ari Aster’s latest.

New CANDYMAN Documentary Announced

candyman

The Complete History of Candyman begins with an overview of the heyday of the horror genre and its sharp decline. Its succinct view tours through Hollywood’s changing landscape and horror’s renaissance during the Golden Age of slashers, which peaked between 1978 and 1984.

Written and directed by bestselling author Bryn Curt James Hammond, The Complete History of Candyman delves into the original trilogy that ran from 1992 to 1999, based on the short story The Forbidden by Clive Barker. The documentary presents an in-depth investigation into the series, the author and the up-and-coming Jordan Peele reboot from brand new and archival interviews with scholars and creators, from the voices who survived the genre’s past trends to those shaping its future.

The director has brought together extremely strong-minded talent to discuss the groundbreaking Bernard Rose classic and its sequels, including Shawn C. Phillips (Ghost Shark, Zombi VIII: Urban Decay, Dallas Jackson (Thriller, Welcome to Sudden Death), Robin Nassif (Warlock III: The End of Innocence, Halloween: Resurrection), and STARBURST’s own Robin Pierce.

The Complete History of Candyman is expected to be released on streaming platforms spring/summer 2021.
