After writing and producing the first two Venom films, Kelly Marcel is moving to direct Marvel and Sony’s third Venom outing starring Tom Hardy, Deadline reports.

Marcel and Hardy will also produce and write the story, with Marcel writing the screenplay. Plot details on Eddie Brock/Venom’s third solo outing are unknown, including any information on which characters from the expanding Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters could join the project.

Earlier this year, Hardy announced that Kelly Marcel was at work on the script, and as the two were developing the story, sources state that it became obvious that Marcel should take over directing duties as well. Marcel and Hardy’s work relationship dates back to the actor’s early days, with Marcel having worked as script editor for the 2008 indie film Bronson. Venom 3 will be the writer’s directorial debut.

Sony has a number of Marvel films in the pipeline, including Kraven the Hunter, which will release October 6th, 2023, and Madame Web, which is set for February 16th, 2024. Given the many delays that have plagued both productions however, it’s more than likely these release dates will change again. Meanwhile, Venom 3 does not yet have a release date.
