Naomi Ackie Heading to PUSSY ISLAND

naomie ackie

Zoe Kravitz has long played roles in some of the world’s most recognizable franchises. Her career has absolutely endeared her to fans of X-Men, J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World, and DC Comics, but it’s her smaller stuff that truly showcases her talent. Now, the actress is stepping up to direct her first feature, the thriller Pussy Island. MGM won the bid for the film’s global distribution rights, beating out other big-name distributors and promising an enthralling realization of Kravitz’s story. Even better, though, is the fact that the film continues to add top-tier talent.

Variety brings word that BAFTA winner Naomi Ackie has officially signed on as the lead in Kravitz’s hotly anticipated directorial debut. In addition to portraying Jannah in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Ackie has appeared in the third season of Master of None, as well as in Idris Elba’s 2018 film Yardie and the second season of The End of the F***ing World.

Ackie will portray Frida, a cocktail waitress eager to charm tech mogul Slater King (Channing Tatum) and gain access to his private island. Details regarding the actual plot are sparse, but judging from its classification as a thriller, it’s safe to say things won’t go smoothly for anyone involved.

Jensen Ackles Returns As Dean Winchester In SUPERNATURAL Prequel

The Winchesters in Supernatural, Sam and Dean

A Supernatural prequel may well be on the way with Jensen Ackles returning as Dean Winchester, it was just announced. Titled The Winchesters, the series would centre on Dean and Sam’s (Jared Padalecki) parents, John and Mary. Narrated from Dean’s perspective, this prequel is said to follow the epic and so-far untold love story of how the two met, and how they put it all on the line to save each other, and the world.

Having ended its 15-season run just last year, Supernatural holds the title of the longest-running sci-fi/genre series in the history of American broadcast television. With an avid fanbase and over fifteen years’ worth of established mythology, it comes as no surprise that The CW might want another crack at that goldmine, even if it’s hard to imagine there’s much left to say about John and Mary’s history. However, Ackles clearly believes otherwise, promising via an Instagram post that “we will hit the waypoints that have been set and fill in the rest in a way you never expected”. The Winchesters is the network’s third time trying to launch a Supernatural spinoff; the two previous attempts were Bloodlines and Wayward Sisters, both of which were introduced as backdoor pilots but never picked up.

The Winchesters’ odds might be slightly better thanks to its big-name backers. Jensen and Danneel Ackles, a Supernatural recurring guest star herself, will executive produce through their company, Chaos Machine Productions. Launched by the couple last autumn, Chaos Machine has an overall deal with Warner Bros. Television, who produced Supernatural and will be producing its prequel.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Samantha Smith as Mary and John Winchester in Supernatural

Jensen Ackles told Deadline that “After Supernatural wrapped its 15th season, we knew it wasn’t over. Because like we say in the show, ‘nothing ever really ends, does it?’ When Danneel and I formed Chaos Machine Productions, we knew the first story we wanted to tell was the story of John and Mary Winchester, or rather the Supernatural origin story. I always felt like my character, Dean, would have wanted to know more about his parents’ relationship and how it came to be. So I love the thought of having him take us on this journey.”

Multiple actors have already played Mary and John over the years. Matt Cohen played John as a young adult, while Jeffrey Dean Morgan starred as John in the first season and returned for guest appearances in seasons 2 and 14. Likewise, Mary was primarily portrayed by Samantha Smith, making appearances throughout the seasons until she joined the main cast in seasons 12 through 14. Amy Gumenick, now best known for her role as Cupid/Carrie Cutter in CW’s Arrow, played a young Mary Campbell.

It’s unknown whether The Winchesters will invite Gumenick or Cohen to reprise their roles, or whether the CW will opt to recast them. As of yet however, The Winchesters only has a script commitment – written/executive produced by fellow Supernatural alum Robbie Thompson – so it may be a while before casting announcements.

The announcement was sadly shadowed by the revelation that Padalecki, Ackles’ co-star and close friend (they were groomsmen at each other’s weddings, after all), found out about the prequel at the same time as everyone else and via Twitter. Retweeting Ackles’ announcement, Padalecki writes: “Dude. Happy for you. Wish I heard about this some way other than Twitter. I’m excited to watch, but bummed that Sam Winchester had no involvement whatsoever.” He then reiterates that “this is the first I’ve heard about it. I’m gutted.”

At the time of writing, Ackles has yet to respond to Padalecki’s comments. Here’s to hoping that this is just another classic J2 prank.

’80s D&D Themed Magic Cards Drop

Secret Lair is Magic The Gathering’s  bespoke card service. These are limited run cards with unique art; they’re standard cards for play Magic The Gathering, but sometimes you just want a pretty card.

And we don’t usually report on this sort of thing because super-pretty Magic the Gathering cards aren’t exactly news. That is until we saw the new range, called, strangely, the All-Natural, Totally Refreshing Superdrop.

The new set introduces some very pretty (and useful) cards. It features amazing art from the likes of Fiona Staples and Jen Bartel. But if we’re honest, we just want to share them because the set also includes heroes and villains from the classic 80’s Dungeons and Dragons cartoon and we are totally there for that.

M.R. Carey said “In this most trying and unsettling of years, reading and judging for the Kitschies has been a source of joy and inspiration for me. I was amazed at the range, ambition and originality of the novels in contention, both by seasoned authors and by newcomers making their debuts. As always, speculative fiction provides perspectives on the world that are surprising, insightful and – in the best sense – revolutionary. Our stories tell us who we are, and these storytellers do it with grace and conviction. It was a privilege to meet them all through their words.”

Scarlett Johansson Developing TOWER OF TERROR for Disney

tower of terror

Not content with mining their animated back catalogue for live-action crowd-pleasers such as Cruella and yesterday’s Snow White project, Disney look to be ramping up their adaptations of their own theme park attractions.

The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise – itself based upon the famous dark ride opened in 1967 – earned the studio uncountable doubloons during its five-film run (a reboot is in development, sans Depp), and this July 30th will see audiences invited to take a Jungle Cruise with Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. Cruise is similarly based on Disney’s beloved ride, and time will tell whether it’s as potent a draw as Pirates (it certainly looks a blast!), but the studio seems confident enough to announce plenty more…

A second stab at a Haunted Mansion movie has been in development for a while now, Space Mountain was announced recently (penned by Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi Executive Producer and writer Joby Harold), and now comes news via Collider that Disney’s Tower of Terror is also on the slate. Beyond Pirates, Cruise, Mansion, or Mountain, this seems by far the most unusual idea on paper. While the latter attractions are already steeped in story and mythology, Tower of Terror is about a broken lift.

As unusual as the choice is, once you learn that the multi-award-winning and always-in-demand Scarlett Johansson is on board to not only star, but produce too, it’s easy to assume that herself and writer Josh Cooley (Inside Out) have already cooked up an interesting way to elevate the material.

Everything else is steeped in secrecy at present, but there’ll be plenty more details on the way as development progresses. As for Scarlett herself, she’ll be back on the big screen in just a few weeks’ time when Black Widow (finally) hits cinemas and Disney+ Premier Access on July 7th.

VOX MACHINA Animated Character Art Unleashed

mercer

Critical Role fans have gotten a sneak peek at the  character art for The Legend of Vox Machina, the crowdfunded cartoon that was so succesful it became an upcoming Amazon Original animated series.

Phil Bourassa (Young Justice, Batman: Bad Blood, Justice League) is the lead character designer. The show is based on the first campaign of the popular Critical Role show, which features voice actors playing Dungeons and Dragons for an audience. Phil is no stranger to larger than life heroes, making him a perfect choice.

The animated series began life as a joke on the regular D&D live-stream (available on YouTube and Twitch). The cast wistfully joked that an animated series of their tabletop exploits would be nice; after all the regular Critical Role cast are best know for their voice work on a variety of popular animated shows.

What started out as a gag became a  Kickstarter for a 22-minute animated short. It did so well that this has become a 24-episode series, currently in production via the award winning studio Titmouse  and Amazon Prime.

The Legend of Vox Machina follows a group of neophyte adventurers on a quest to save the realm from terrifying monsters and dark magical forces. Throughout the first season, our characters will face undead giants, overthrow a sinister necromancer, and confront a powerful curse that has taken root inside their own group.
