Medusa, the famed Gorgon with fabulously slithering hair and a stony gaze, is getting a modern makeover. The action adventure film centred on the Greek mythological figure is in development at Amazon Studios, and news comes that Watchmen director Nicole Kassell has been tapped to direct.
She’s joined by Nicole Perlman on scripting duties, best known for her writing contributions to Marvel Studios projects like Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel, as well as Pokémon: Detective Pikachu. Plot details are being kept entombed for the time being, but the fantasy story promises to see Medusa setting out on an epic quest to save the world.
Kassell, meanwhile, has directed episodes of many prestige fantasy and sci-fi series, such as The Leftovers, Westworld, and Castle Rock. Her work on Watchmen also earned Kassell an Emmy nomination for outstanding direction of a limited series.
Medusa is also being produced by Vinson Films’ Tripp Vinson and Tara Farney, the banner behind cult horror movie Ready or Not and Netflix’s Murder Mystery. Kassell will also produce, with Perlman aboard as executive producer.
Another Medusa-centric project is being developed at Fangoria Studios, as STARBURST reported last year, with Anna Chazelle set to write, direct, and executive produce the horror film.
No release date for Amazon’s Medusa has been announced.
