Movie News: X-MEN: APOCALYPSE to Take Place in 1983

In the wake of X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, we’ve been hearing various stories as to just when X-MEN: APOCALYPSE will be set. The general consensus is that the film will follow the younger cast comprised of the likes of Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy and Jennifer Lawrence, although there’s also rumours of some of the older cast appearing. Now comes some apparent confirmation on the film’s timeline.

Speaking on The Q&A Podcast, writer Simon Kinberg confirmed, “Next movie takes place in 1983.” That means that the film will take place 10 years after DAYS OF FUTURE PAST.

In terms of characters, the younger cast members are said to be the focus of the film once again, although there will be some additions. Channing Tatum will be appearing as Gambit, whilst there’s current speculation that we’ll be seeing younger versions of Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm and Nightcrawler.

To be directed by Bryan Singer, X-MEN: APOCALYPSE is currently set for a 27th May, 2016 release.

Events News: Edgar Allan Poe To Get A Bust in Boston

Poe

A life-sized bronze bust of the great Edgar Allan Poe is set to be unveiled at the Public Library in Boston, Massachusetts but they need your help to make it happen.

The sculpture is planned by the same group who last year erected a similar tribute to H.P. Lovecraft in Providence, Rhode Island, and it is hoped the project will be supported by the millions of Poe fans the world over. Some big name donators so far include director Guillermo Del Toro and writer Neil Gaiman.

The Kickstarter campaign, already over half funded, still has twenty four days to run, but don’t leave it too late to get involved. There are lots of great collectable items as incentives, but the best motivator must surely be the chance of being part of a project recognising one of the most important writers of horror and genre fiction.

As well as the unveiling, a one-off presentation of Jeffrey Combs’ one-man show, NEVERMORE – AN EVENING WITH EDGAR ALLAN POE will be performed at the Somerville Theatre. The production, directed by Combs associate Stuart Gordon (FROM BEYOND, REANNIMATOR) is an acclaimed event which has played to packed houses and this special performance is being arranged by local indie filmmaker, Izzy Lee in conjunction with Bryan Moore, the project producer and sculptor.

From the pitch:

Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston in 1809 and in the 200 years since his death, he’s become the icon of gothic literature, the father of detective fiction and a heavy hitter in the American Romantic Movement of mysteries, pioneering the way for many other authors to come.

His classic tales of the macabre are now recognizable by the titles alone, including The Black Cat, The Tell Tale Heart, Annabel Lee, and of course, the landmark work of poetry… The Raven.

The name Edgar Allan Poe has since become synonymous with a standard of excellence in which all other efforts in his singular literary genre have become measured by…

The bust unveiling will take place on October 30th and the NEVERMORE production the following night, Halloween 2014.

Movie News: Sixth RESIDENT EVIL Gets a Tentative Title

With a sixth RESIDENT EVIL movie in the works, now comes word on the tentative title of the film. Collider reports that the follow-up to RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION is currently known as RESIDENT EVIL: THE FINAL CHAPTER.

It’s been known for a while that this new RESIDENT EVIL will be the last one that Paul W. S. Anderson directs, and this new title certainly suggests that. Of course, this could change down the line, as could the title of RE6, but plenty would say that the franchise has definitely ran its course.

In fairness to the franchise, it has been a very profitable one for Sony and Screen Gems. The last movie in the series, 2012’s RETRIBUTION, took $240 million globally from a budget of $65 million. Whilst these films are never going to break box office records, they still take a decent amount of profit.

In previous years, Anderson has spoken about how 2010’s RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE was the start of a new trilogy of RE films. After continuing with the 2012 RETRIBUTION, it seems that the director is set to bring the series to a close with this upcoming effort.

As for this sixth installment in the RESIDENT EVIL franchise, no plot details or a specific release date are known at this stage. Anderson is currently working on a first draft for the film, which will again see the director’s wife, Milla Jovovich, return as Alice. The film is expected to hit at some point in 2015.

TV News: First HEROES REBORN Casting Announced

Since HEROES REBORN was announced earlier this year, fans have wondered whether it would move on from the plethora of problems that befouled the original series. The other biggie was whether any of the original cast would be returning to the fold.

Now the first, of possibly many, has signed up: Mr horn rimmed glasses himself, Noah Bennet, played by Jack Coleman. Like most of the characters on the show, creator Tim Kring just couldn’t seem to decide what to do with him. He was at once a good, then a bad guy, then a something-else-altogether guy.

More casting news as it develops…

HEROES REBORN will air on NBC sometime in 2015.

TV News: He’s the Greatest! He’s Fantastic! And he’s Back! DANGER MOUSE Reboot Heading to CBBC

Further to the recently announced BANANAMAN revival, comes news of another beloved British kid’s show heading back to our screens. But unlike BANANAMAN, people might actually care about this one. The BBC has today revealed that it’s to bring back the Cosgrove Hall cult classic DANGER MOUSE for a contemporary audience.

The original series ran for 161 episodes from 1982 to 1992, and featured the legendary pairing of UK icons David Jason and Terry Scott as the voices of the cocky secret agent Danger Mouse and his bumbling but loyal hamster sidekick Ernest Penfold respectively. The pair regularly did battle with tyrannical toad Baron Silas Greenback.

The new series will again be animated (because real mice with drivers’ licenses are still difficult to find these days, ones that can act doubly so), but will employ CG instead of the traditional cell technique (because children have been trained to think the latter is rubbish). Expect it to hit the CBBC sometime in 2015.

What next? TRAP DOOR? JAMIE AND HIS MAGIC TORCH? CHORLTON AND THE WHEELIES? DUCKULA*? Champion your favourites in the Comments below!

*How did I ever miss that this was a DANGER MOUSE spin-off?!

Comic News: Quentin Tarantino Developing his First Sequel with DJANGO/ZORRO Crossover!

The titled-like-a-slashfic-but-probably-not-going-to-be-a-slashfic DJANGO/ZORRO is the first story featuring Django Freeman since 2012’s DJANGO UNCHAINED. The brand new tale starring the slave-turned-bounty hunter and the nobleman-turned-vigilante is to be co-published by DC & Dynamite Entertainment and plotted by Quentin Tarantino and ZORRO RIDES AGAIN writer Matt Wagner. The final script will be handled by comic book veteran Wagner, who will presumably tweak Tarantino’s more leisurely approach to screenwriting to fit the printed medium without resorting to eighteen page long dialogue sequences about Our American Cousin or early Mark Twain stories!

DJANGO/ZORRO rides into comic book stores later this year. If you missed Quentin Tarantino’s first foray into the comic book world, you can now get his seven-issue adaptation of his original DJANGO UNCHAINED screenplay in trade paperback over at Amazon.

Movie News: Colin Trevorrow Teases JURASSIC WORLD Dinos!

Ok, the title’s a slight misnomer, not to mention unadvisable, as Dennis Nedry found out to his cost back in the original. A more apt title would be “Colin Trevorrow Tweets a Photo Which Kind of, Almost, Shows a Dinosaur”, but that’s not as snappy (crap pun intended).

After months of teasing us with photos of pretty looking scenery and even prettier looking cast members (and of course Chris Pratt), the director’s now tweeted a photo hinting that he does actually plan on having dinosaurs in his dinosaur movie. Now, not possessing either a degree in palaeontology or Ross Geller’s phone number [Look, just because this is about a popular ’90s franchise, it doesn’t mean you can make 20 year old cultural references! – Ed] we’re not going to hazard a guess which dinosaur it is. Suffice to say it’s one of the bitey ones.

This photo comes mere hours after Executive Producer Frank Marshall tweeted a pic of himself in what appeared to the the Jurassic Park branch of Starbucks (the park presumably having pretty favourable tax rates). Considering the film takes place 20 years after Steven Spielberg’s original, in a fully operational park, it makes perfect sense that various well known companies such as Starbucks would have franchises there. Let’s just hope they’ve got good insurance.

JURASSIC WORLD, starring Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D’Onofrio and some dinosaurs goes back online June 12th, 2015.

Movie News: Rikes! SCOOBY-DOO to be Rebooted

The character of Scooby-Doo and his pals have been a long-time favourite of several generations. Now comes word from Deadline that Scoobert is set to get revitalised once more for the big screen.

After SCOOBY-DOO and SCOOBY-DOO 2: MONSTERS UNLEASED in the 2000s, the cinematic franchise is set to be rebooted. The relatively unknown Randall Green has been brought in to write the script for this latest effort to bring Scooby, Shaggy and the gang back to cinema screens. Since MONSTERS UNLEASED there’s been a slew of low-budget, direct-to-DVD outings for the famous pooch.

Despite very little being known about the film at this stage, it’s expected that this new movie will be a completely separate entity to the movies of previous years, meaning no return for the likes of Matthew Lillard, Linda Cardellini, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar. Similarly, director Raja Gosnell is busy churning out high quality movies like, err, THE SMURFS.

Expect more on this as it develops.
