Movie News: Guy Pearce Discusses IRON MAN 3’s Big Twist

Despite being one of the highest grossing movies of all time, IRON MAN 3 managed to irk a lot of long-time comic book fans. The Mandarin, such a legendary foe of Tony Stark’s in the comic book world, was brought to the big screen and adapted wonderfully to fit into the modern-day MCU, excellently played by Sir Ben Kingsley. And then all of that was revealed to be a façade; a façade that angered many. Guy Pearce played Aldrich Killian in the movie, later being revealed to be the whole brains behind the attack on Stark, and he’s been giving his thoughts on the film’s twist.

Speaking to IGN, Pearce said, “Personally, I loved it. I was never a comic book fan growing up, so I have no attachment to the character. I mean, I get it. The loyalty to those characters, I totally get it. But based on the sort of single-entity movie – and particularly based on Ben Kingsley’s performance – I just adored what that turned into. But I do certainly understand that some diehard fans kind of went, ‘Awww… come on!’”

Safe to say, many of those who were left frustrated by the twist let out more than an ‘Awww… come on.’ Still, regardless of fanboy outcry, IRON MAN 3 took a massively-impressive $1.2 billion at the global box office. In fact, those who don’t have any ties to the Marvel comic book characters generally loved IRON MAN 3, posing the age-old question of do we, as comic book fans, sometimes get a bit too precious about characters?

Marvel Studios and Disney have made very few missteps during their developing of the MCU, but The Mandarin twist and the recent ANT-MAN fiasco are two issues that stand out amongst their excellently-delivered world. And in fairness to Marvel, it appears that they have realised that The Mandarin swerve wasn’t the greatest of ideas, with the ALL HAIL THE KING One-Shot seemingly confirming that there is a very real Mandarin out there; one who isn’t Aldrich Killian or Trevor Slattery.

With no further IRON MAN movies confirmed at this stage, it stands to be seen whether we’ll see the real Mandarin make a big screen appearance. As for Iron Man himself, he’ll be next up in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, which is released on 24th April, 2015 in the UK.

Movie News: Artwork Revealed for HALLOWEEN: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION

Last month brought news that the HALLOWEEN series was getting the Blu-ray boxset treatment with an upcoming, jammed-pack release. As well as a ton of extras, this set is to feature alternative versions of some of the movies, with the producer’s cut of HALLOWEEN: THE CURSE OF MICHAEL MYERS arguably the most hotly anticipated amongst long-time fans of the series. Now comes the first look at the boxset’s artwork, courtesy of Anchor Bay and Scream Factory.

The official word on the 15-disc set reads:

Last year, the horror classic “Halloween” celebrated 35 years of terror for those willing to partake in its vision of unrelenting horror. But that was only the beginning of the celebration. What producers Moustapha Akkad, Debra Hill and Irwin Yablans, writer/director John Carpenter and stars Jamie Lee Curtis & Donald Pleasence started in 1978 has transformed into one of the most durable, iconic – and copiously studied — horror film franchises ever created. Before Jason, before Freddy, and before Jigsaw, there was…Michael. Over the years, audiences have lived and relived the terrors of Michael Myers through ten feature films, as well as various re-edits and alternate versions. Yet to date, the complete saga of Michael Myers could only be told in pieces, in individual DVD and Blu-ray releases, with the rights spread across multiple home entertainment studios.

Until now…

Through the unprecedented collaboration of rival home entertainment companies Anchor Bay Entertainment and Scream Factory – the leading purveyors in horror home entertainment –”Halloween: The Complete Collection” Blu-ray box sets arrive September 23rd.

For the legions of Halloween fans, the Deluxe Edition boasts 15 discs and contains all the “Halloween” feature films – “Halloween,” “Halloween II,” “Halloween III: Season of the Witch,” “Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers,” “Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers,” “Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers,” “Halloween H20,” “Halloween: Resurrection,” “Rob Zombie’s Halloween” and “Halloween II”.  The set includes the never before released producers cut of “Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers” as well as the ultra-rare network TV version of the original “Halloween,” the network TV version of “Halloween II,” plus the unrated versions of “Rob Zombie’s Halloween” and “Halloween II”. It is packed with hours of brand new bonus features, including new interviews with cast and crew from the entire franchise!

In response to years of fan feedback, the first “Halloween” will now also include the original mono audio track and the set will include both versions of the original “Halloween,” the original Blu-ray release and the recently remastered 35th Anniversary version with the mono track added back in! It also comes with a limited edition 40-page book written by Michael Gingold of Fangoria Magazine.  The collectible packaging will include a newly commissioned illustration on the outer case and each film will be in its own black Blu-ray case with the original theatrical one sheet as the key art. This deluxe set carries an SRP of $169.99.

“This compilation is the ultimate collector’s item for fans of the ‘Halloween’ films and a testament to all the wonderful talent that have worked on them,” remarked Malek Akkad, President of Trancas International Films and son of series producer Moustapha Akkad. “The partnership between Anchor Bay Entertainment and Scream Factory to present fans for the first time with all the Halloween films in one definitive package is a tribute to everyone – including my father – who made these films the terrifying classics they are today.”

The 10-disc Edition includes the original theatrical versions of the “Halloween” films and will include select bonus features. SRP is $129.99.

In terms of availability, HALLOWEEN: THE COMPLETE SERIES is set for a 23rd September US release, with a UK release hopefully following shortly after.

Movie News: Francis Matthews, R.I.P.

francis-matthews

All of us here at STARBURST are incredibly sad to hear that veteran actor Francis Matthews has died, aged 86.

Although a prolific stage, film, and television actor, it is likely to be his fantasy roles for which he will most be remembered.

Roles in Hammer films THE REVENGE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1958), RASPUTIN, THE MAD MONK (1966) and more importantly, DRACULA: PRINCE OF DARKNESS (1966) brought him to the attention of horror fans. But it is as the voice of Captain Scarlet in the Gerry Anderson TV series, CAPTAIN SCARLET AND THE MYSTERONS which brought him much acclaim, and he made regular appearances at conventions, always happy to meet fans.

STARBURST sends his family and friends our deepest sympathy.

Movie News: Surprise Faces Spotted on AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Set

With AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTON currently shooting on the campus of the University of East Anglia, Norwich, some interesting news is coming out in terms of just which characters may be appearing.

ComicBookMovie is reporting that, as well as the already known and familiar faces of the MCU Avengers team, Anthony Mackie and B.J. Britt have been spotted on set and in costume. Mackie, of course, played The Falcon in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, whilst Britt appeared as Agent Triplett in AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. As well as Mackie and Britt, it’s also being heavily rumoured that the Iron Patriot armour, last seen donned by Don Cheadle’s James Rhodes in IRON MAN 3, is on location, suggesting that Rhodey may also make in appearance in the AVENGERS ASSEMBLE sequel.

So, it appears that The Falcon, Agent Triplett and possibly Iron Patriot will be joining Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye. Then there’s the additions of Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch, who will apparently start off the film opposing The Avengers before aligning themselves with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

As for the use of the University of East Anglia as a shooting location, the production are using it as base of sorts for The Avengers, with a group of “Avengers Recruits” also involved in the shoot.

Directed by Joss Whedon, AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON is currently set for a 24th April, 2015 UK release.

TV News: New Characters Revealed for ARROW’s Season 3

With the fantastic Season 2 of ARROW now done and dusted, news of some new characters for the show’s third season is starting to come out. TVLine has managed to get hold of some character breakdowns that have been released for casting calls; character breakdowns that seem to allude to some familiar DC names.

First up is a character called Daniel. Now, the name is merely a placeholder so as to not give away the character’s actual name just yet. Daniel is described as “20 something gent – a major recurring character for Season 3 – is a handsome, enigmatic and highly intelligent entrepreneur developing groundbreaking technology. (Picture a business magnate in Ryan Gosling’s body.) Thought exuding charm and confidence in public, he privately harbors a tragic past that will drive him to become a tech-powered superhero. Watch for this formidable fella to be a love interest for Felicity and a rival of Oliver’s – both personally and professionally.”

Seeing as how Kord Industries has been referenced previously in the show, there’s a very good chance that “Daniel” will actually be Ted Kord, aka The Blue Beetle. Often a member of the Justice League, Kord uses a whole host of toys and gadgets to fight the bad guys.

As well as “Daniel”, another new addition is, at this stage, called Seth. Again, this name is merely a placeholder for now. The description of Seth reads as “A well-educated criminal with grand ambitions and a knack for chemistry, this potentially recurring character gains power over his enemies by exposing them to a drug that drains their willpower. Oh, and he is very much a physical match for The Arrow.”

The current rumours on just who “Seth” is speculate that the character will actually be Jonathan Crane, aka Scarecrow. We’re not totally buying that rumour, though, as Crane is definitely not somebody who can be described as a physical match for the Emerald Archer.

As well as the aforementioned pair of new characters, Season 3 will also introduce us to Toshi and Akiko. It’s believed that this duo will appear in the flashback moments when the show returns. Toshi is described as “Oliver’s teacher and handler, and eventually a friend. A well-trained operative, skilled in weaponry, combat and intelligence gathering, he is also a devoted father and husband.” The character of Akiko is broken down as “Toshi’s wife is another of Oliver’s Hong Kong caretakers, and is herself highly skilled in martial arts.”

ARROW will return later this year, whilst Season 2 hits DVD and Blu-ray on 16th September.

TV News: New Featurette Arrives for THE FLASH

Earlier this week, The CW released a short featurette highlighting some of the key S.T.A.R. Labs’ team from their upcoming THE FLASH. Now comes another featurette aimed at hyping up the ARROW spin-off show.

{starburst} http://youtu.be/YJWmIB-InYc{/starburst}

Given how well the last season of ARROW went, it’s safe to say that fans have high expectations for THE FLASH. In his appearances in ARROW, Grant Gustin did brilliantly as Barry Allen. Here’s hoping that he can carry that forward into his own show.

Gustin, last seen involved in a certain accident during ARROW’s Season 2 mid-season finale, is Barry Allen, aka The Flash. Joining him in the show are the pair of Danielle Panabaker and Carlos Valdes as Caitlin Snow/Killer Frost and Cisco Ramon/Vibe, respectively; a duo that have already appeared in ARROW’s Season 2. Making up the rest of THE FLASH are Rick Gosnett as Eddie Thawne/Professor Zoom, Candice Patton as Iris West, Jesse L. Martin as Detective West, Tom Cavanagh as S.T.A.R. Labs’ Harrison Wells, Michelle Harrison as Nora Allen, Patrick Sabongui as Central City Police Captain David Singh, and former Flash John Wesley Shipp as Barry’s father, Henry Allen.

This ARROW spin-off has recently been confirmed as airing on Tuesdays during the fall in the US, aka autumn for us Brits. As for just where and when this show will find a UK home, we’ll bring you those deets as and when we get it.

TV News: Sarah Paulson to Play Two-Headed Lady in AHS: FREAK SHOW

In some potentially brilliant news, Sarah Paulson has confirmed that she’ll be playing a two-headed lady in the upcoming AMERICAN HORROR STORY: FREAK SHOW. The actress took to Twitter to send out the following:

Paulson accompanied the image with the caption, “So excited to be playing Bette AND Dot this season. Two heads are better than one! #AHSFREAKSHOW”

FREAK SHOW is to be set in the coastal village of Jupiter, Florida in the 1950s. Jessica Lange will be playing a German who is battling to run one of the USA’s last remaining freak shows. Central to the arc of the season will be the “unusuals” who are housed in Lange’s show. As well as Lange and Paulson, the fourth season of AHS will also see returns for Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Jamie Brewer, Denis O’Hare, Frances Conroy and Evan Peters. One new addition to the show is Michael Chiklis, who will reportedly be the father to Peters’ character. It’s also believed that both Taissa Farmiga and Lily Rabe will be returning, too.

Movie News: Guillermo del Toro No Longer Directing BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

EntertainmentWise is reporting that Master Mexican director Guillermo del Toro has stepped down as director on the upcoming remake of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, starring Emma Watson. While del Toro’s beautifully-twisted imagination would have taken the classic tragic love story from the sanitised clutches of Disney, he’s staying on as producer. Having already written the script, the film, no doubt, will bear his distinct style, half way between the art movie and big budget action.

Never one to rest of his laurels, del Toro is currently directing CRIMSON PEAK, starring Tom Hiddleston and Charlie Hunnam. THE STRAIN, his TV series about a vampire virus, premieres next month.

Warner Bros. hasn’t yet announced a replacement director, although expect more on this as it develops.
