Jake Gyllenhaal to Replace Tom Hardy on SUICIDE SQUAD?

Following on from the earlier news that Tom Hardy had dropped out of Warner Brothers’ SUICIDE SQUAD, The Wrap is reporting that director David Ayer is eying Jake Gyllenhaal to take over the Rick Flag role from Hardy. Ayer and Gyllenhaal have previously worked together on the impressive END OF WATCH.

The character of Rick Flag is one who is often depicted as the leader of the Suicide Squad, so he’s expected to play a pivotal part of the villain-centric movie. As for Gyllenhaal, this isn’t the first time he’s been talked about for a superhero project. The actor was extremely close to playing Spider-Man in Sam Raimi’s trilogy of films, with him also talked about for Batman, Doctor Strange and Green Hornet.

Despite Hardy’s departure, SUICIDE SQUAD still has a cast that includes Jared Leto as The Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Will Smith as Deadshot, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.

SUICIDE SQUAD is currently set for an August 5th, 2016 release.

BBC Axe IN THE FLESH

Since its second series finished in June 2014, fans of BBC Three’s post-zombie outbreak drama IN THE FLESH, written and created by Dominic Mitchell, have waited patiently for news on whether the cult show would be back for a third series. Today the BBC issued a formal statement confirming what many fans of the show – and even its creator – had been suspecting for some months. IN THE FLESH will not be returning for a third series.  “BBC Three is very proud of the two award-winning series of IN THE FLESH,” read the statement. “However, given there is only budget for one original drama series a year on the channel, it won’t be returning. We loved the show but have to make hard choices to bring new shows through and create room for emerging talent. Huge thanks to the BAFTA award-winning writer Dominic Mitchell and the superb cast.”

The series, set in and around the village of Roarton, told of attempts to reintegrate infected survivors of a zombie outbreak, sufferers from Partially-Deceased Syndrome, back into the communities in which they were born but which, in their undead state, they had tried to destroy. Dominic Mitchell took to Twitter following the BBC announcement. “Sad news today. I’d like to thank the BBC, the incredible cast and crew, and the amazing fans for making and supporting IN THE FLESH.

IN THE FLESH debuted as a three-part mini-series on BBC Three in March 2013, returning for its second and final six-episode series in May/June 2014. Unfortunately, the series never managed to engage a large BBC Three audience, its highest ratings being achieved for its first episode which was watched by nearly 700,000 viewers. By the time the final episode was broadcast last June only 300,000 viewers were still following the series.

Lead and Title Revealed for New RING Movie

The Wrap is reporting that the latest installment in THE RING franchise has found its lead and been given a new title.

Paramount’s upcoming relaunch of the series, which was previously known as THE RING 3D, will now be known as RINGS. Despite being a reboot of the franchise, it’s believed that the new film will still keep the continuity of the previous movies in the US run of RING films.

As for talent involved, Matilda Lutz, a relative newcomer, has been confirmed to be the lead of the film. Academy Award-winning Akiva Goldsman is working on the script, which will be directed by F. Javier Gutierrez. Plot-wise, it’s believed that we’ll see more of Samara and the sinister video tape that’s been so prominent in the series.

No Patrick Stewart or Ian McKellen for X-MEN: APOCALYPSE

With X-MEN: APOCALYPSE to act as a follow-up to last year’s X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, now comes news that Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen will not be appearing in the next X-movie. The two are famous for playing Professor X and Magneto, respectively, in the series.

Speaking to Larry King, Stewart confirmed the news before adding, “I was learning quite a lot more about it last night. It is going to be looking very much at the earlier lives of all of our characters. And so I don’t think we’ll be making an appearance.”

Of course, things could change or the pair could even end up making a small cameo similar to the post-credits scene in THE WOLVERINE. Despite Stewart and McKellen apparently being absent, Professor X and Magneto will be present, with James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender returning as the younger versions of Charles and Erik, respectively.

Whilst Stewart made reference to the earlier lives of certain characters, it was only last week that news emerged on which names are up to play the younger versions of Jean Grey, Cyclops and Storm in the film.

To be directed by Bryan Singer, X-MEN: APOCALYPSE is currently set for a May 27th, 2016 release.
