ITV Announce Cast for New JEKYLL AND HYDE

Last November we reported on the formal commission of JEKYLL AND HYDE, a brand new ITV fantasy adventure series based on the classic novel by Robert Louis Stevenson and written and executive-produced by Charlie (FAST SHOW) Higson. ITV have now announced the main cast for the ten-episode series which will shortly begin extensive location filming in Sri Lanka before returning to London for further filming next month.

Tom Bateman, previously seen on TV in DA VINCI’S DEMONS and more recently on the London stage in a new production of SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, has been cast as Robert Jekyll who, in the first episode, is a newly-qualified doctor living with his parents in Ceylon and who soon embarks on a dark and mysterious journey as he becomes aware of an inherited medical condition which causes a terrifying physical transformation. Appearing as Sir Roger Bulstrode, who heads up secret Government investigative organisation M10, is Richard E. Grant, the celebrated stage, film and TV actor whose credits include the classic WITHNAIL AND I and, more recently, episodes of DOCTOR WHO where he played a human manifestation of the Doctor’s old enemy The Great Intelligence. Romantic interest is provided by Natalie Gumede, the former CORONATION STREET star who appeared as Ashley Carter in the recent DOCTOR WHO Christmas episode LAST CHRISTMAS and who appears in JEKYLL AND HYDE as Bella.

JEKYLL AND HYDE is expected to air on the ITV Network in the UK this Autumn.

THE AFTER – Axed by Amazon!

Last February Amazon launched the pilot episode of a proposed new post-apocalyptic drama series created, written and directed by Chris Carter, previously best-known for the worldwide 1990s phenomenon of THE X-FILES, on their online streaming service. The everything-and-the-kitchen-sink hour-long pilot depicted an inexplicable catastrophe which wreaks havoc in Los Angeles and throws together eight disparate survivors who work together – usually reluctantly and with lots of swearing – to make their way to safety as they try to make sense of their strange and inexplicable new world. The episode was well-received enough for Amazon to order a short-run season of eight new episodes which were expected to launch later in 2015.

This week, however, comes the news that Amazon has now decided not to go ahead with the series and that no further episodes of THE AFTER will be entering production. Variety reports that Roy Price, Vice President of Amazon Studios, released a statement, “We have decided to not move forward with THE AFTER. We would like to thank Chris Carter, the phenomenal cast, crew and producers for all their efforts.” High production costs and actor salaries are rumoured to be fundamental to the decision to stifle the series before even a frame of its next episode could be filmed.

The axing will be a blow for Carter, who had envisaged the show running for ninety-nine episodes and whose creative star has waned since the heyday of THE X-FILES (1993 – 2002) and the less successful MILLENNIUM (1996 – 1999). Rumours of a third X-FILES movie continue to rumble despite the relative failure of the second feature film, 2008’s I WANT TO BELIEVE.

George Lucas Had Plans for STAR WARS: EPISODE VII

George Lucas has admitted to USA Today that he had hopes of directing STAR WARS: EPISODE VII himself. Now we remember Mr Lucas stating in an early issue of STARBURST, it may have been issue no. 2 or 3, that there would be nine STAR WARS movies. Then after the prequels there wasn’t to be any more films, but when Disney bought Lucasfilm and announced that they’d be keeping the saga alive with EPISODES VII, VIII and IX, it transpires that George had been mapping out a new STAR WARS trilogy with the intention of releasing the final film in May 2015 before selling Lucasfilm.

However, Disney’s interest in acquiring the franchise and the thought of yet another exhausting ten-year commitment (he’s not getting any younger folks) to the series was enough to convince him to finally let his creation go.  “It’s better for me to get out at the beginning of a new thing and I can just remove myself,” he said. “The time is more important to me than the money.”

Now Lucas is looking forward to watching J.J. Abrams’s take on STAR WARS as a fan. He said, “The only thing I really regret about STAR WARS is the fact I never got to see it – I never got to be blown out of my seat when the ship came over the screen. The next one, I’ll be able to enjoy it like anybody else.”

Lucas hasn’t turned his back on movie making as the animated STRANGE MUSIC, which he produced and provided the storyline for, opens in the US on January 23rd.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII – THE FORCE AWAKENS will no doubt dominate the Christmas box office when it opens December 18th.

POLTERGEIST Reboot to be “More of a Kids’ Movie”

After the original scared the pants off a whole generation of children (and adults), it looks as if the POLTERGEIST reboot is to be a PG-type kids’ film. It’s worth noting that the original was given a 15 certificiate.

Speaking to Collider, star Sam Rockwell revealed, “The 10-year-old boy is really the protagonist this time. JoBeth Williams was the protagonist for the most part in the first one and now the kid, it’s really through his point-of-view. So it’s more of a kids’ movie. So I don’t know if it’s gonna be like rated-R scary.”

Rockwell added, “It’s not like CONJURING type of scary. It’s a different kind of movie. It’s more of an adventure. It’s essentially a child abduction film when you come down to it. I mean, the original POLTERGEIST is too.”

Production on the relaunching of this famed horror series has now wrapped, with a July 24th release currently planned. As well as Rockwell, POLTERGEIST will also feature Rosemarie DeWitt, Jared Harris and Nicholas Braun, with Gil Kenan directing.

Tom Hardy Departs SUICIDE SQUAD

The end of last year saw Warner Brothers and DC announce a star-studded line-up for David Ayer’s villain-centric SUICIDE SQUD. Despite having been on board as Rick Flag, Tom Hardy has now left the project.

The Hollywood Reporter is the outlet responsible for breaking the news, although the exact reasoning for the actor’s departure is unclear at this stage. Early speculation suggests that filming on Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s THE REVENANT is taking longer than expected, meaning Hardy is tied up with that. As such, the Flag role, often depicted as the leader of Task Force X, is now vacant.

Still on board for the movie are Jared Leto as The Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Will Smith as Deadshot, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, and Cara Delevigne as Enchantress.

SUICIDE SQUAD is currently scheduled for an August 5th, 2016 release. As for Hardy, he’ll been seen next in MAD MAX: FURY ROAD.

THE FLASH Adds Another Trickster

With Mark Hamill already confirmed to be playing The Trickster in THE FLASH, now comes word that DEXTER’s Devon Graye will be joining the show.

The Wrap reports that Graye will be playing Axel Walker, who himself takes on The Trickster mantle. Hamill will be playing the original Trickster, James Jesse, which will see him reprise the role that he played back in the 1990s FLASH series. Graye’s Walker will make his debut in Episode 17 of the current season, with Hamill’s Jesse also debuting in that episode.

The previous description of Hamill’s Trickster reads:

Mark Hamill returns in a brand new interpretation of James Jesse (aka The Trickster), a role he originated on the ‘90s FLASH series. In this new iteration, The Trickster is an anarchist terrorist con man serving a life sentence in Iron Heights who helps Barry (Grant Gustin) and Det. West (Jesse L. Martin) to foil the city-wide attacks of a wannabe Trickster eagerly following in the original’s deadly footsteps. The episode will reunite him with John Wesley Shipp who went up against him as the original Flash on the CBS version.

THE FLASH returns to US screens next week, with a UK return to follow on February 10th.
