THUNDERBIRDS Needs You!

Stand by for action! Modiphius Entertainment has shared promotional cover art and announced the release date of its THUNDERBIRDS CO-OPERATIVE BOARDGAME.

As we reported last year, PANDEMIC creator Matt Leacock has teamed up with ITV Studios Global Entertainment and Modiphius Entertainment to produce the THUNDERBIRDS CO-OPERATIVE BOARDGAME. The game’s publishers have announced that it will be on sale September 2015, following a Kickstarter campaign. The creators are now asking fans for their input.

Modiphus will be going live with the Thunderbirds Kickstarter in February. This has become standard practice in the industry and allows producers to improve the quality of components.  Planned pieces include models of Thunderbirds 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, plus character figures. The Kickstarter hopes to add Tracy Island, the villainous Hood, Lady Penelope, Parker, Tin Tin, Brains and others. Fans can help by filling in a special survey here.

Matt Leacock is best known for PANDEMIC, a best-selling co-operative boardgame in which players team up to prevent virulent diseases destroying the world, and this new game has excited enthusiasts. The Thunderbirds game promises a similarly addictive experience, and will also come with a large number of detailed Thunderbirds models as well as art from artist Graham Bleathman, known for his work on the show.

Chris Birch, head of Modiphus Entertainment told Starburst, This will be a fantastic co-operative journey in the Thunderbirds universe with your favourite death defying missions and a set of high quality pre-assembled models of the Thunderbirds to save the day!”

Early Release Confirms TOTAL WAR: WARHAMMER Development

After months of speculation by fans of Games Workshop’s grim dark Old World, an early release has finally confirmed that The Creative Assembly is set to tackle TOTAL WAR: WARHAMMER. The news was revealed in a leak on twcenter.net where one member combing through an early copy of THE ART OF TOTAL WAR highlighted a specific particular passage, “We’re also experimenting with this in the mobile space, with TOTAL WAR: KINGDOM, and taking the series to a fantasy setting with TOTAL WAR: WARHAMMER.”

To further back this up, it was posted with an assortment of photographs of the book’s cover and its interior:

While long thought to be on the horizon, this is the first solid confirmation that the TOTAL WAR series would be moving to a fantasy setting for a new instalment. Despite the successes of the DAWN OF WAR franchise, a developer’s last outing into WARHAMMER FANTASY was met with a tepid response among fans. Even today opinions of WARHAMMER: MARK OF CHAOS are strongly divisive at best and better forgotten by many, so putting the crew behind the ever successful TOTAL WAR franchise could finally offer the experience fans want.

The major question now is when the game will be set, prior to or following the ongoing END TIMES event. At this moment in time, Games Workshop’s writers are set upon tearing down most of the Old World and destroying half the planet, with several major factions having been permanently disbanded and entire continents destroyed. Both offer many opportunities for stories and new units, and even prior to this there are countless major wars to work with.

Whatever the case, we can only hope that the end product will feature substantially less bugs and bad A.I. than TOTAL WAR: ROME II.

Live-Action GHOST IN THE SHELL Given a Release Date

With Scarlett Johansson now announced to be headlining DreamWorks’ live-action GHOST IN THE SHELL movie, the studio has gone ahead and announced a release date for the adaptation. To be directed by SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN’s Rupert Sanders, GHOST IN THE SHELL will be released on April 14th, 2017.

This live-action adaptation of the classic anime and manga series has been in development for a while now, although it was only in the last few weeks that Johansson was finally revealed to have signed on. Avi Arad and Steven Paul are on board as producers, with Steven Spielberg also involved in the project. The futuristic thrill-ride could be stunning if handled correctly, especially given the latest modern technology that would be available to create such a world. The original 1989 feature from Masmune Shirow, about a bizarre and complex future that see an ops unit tackling technology-related crime, has spawned multiple animated series, films and comic books over the years, gaining a huge cult following.

Expect more on this as it develops.

John Carpenter Joins ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK Remake

If you ask us at STARBURST, John Carpenter’s ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK is one of the coolest movies of all time, with Kurt Russell’s Snake Plissken a favourite of many of ours. With the news over the last few years that a remake of Carpenter’s 1981 classic was happening, let’s just say we weren’t exactly enthused by those developments. Now comes word on something that actually puts us a little more at ease with the remake.

As the title suggests, as reported by Deadline, John Carpenter will actually be a part of 20th Century Fox’s ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK redo, with Fox having recently secured the rights to the property. The legendary Carpenter will serve as an executive producer on the project. A long-time favourite of many a genre fan, and quite simply one of the most iconic names in horror, Carpenter has sadly been very quiet over the last few years. Having delivered a whole host of genre classics from the mid-70s until the mid-90s, the turn of the millennium has seen Carpenter’s output kept to a minimum, with only 2001’s GHOSTS OF MARS, two episodes of MASTERS OF HORROR, and 2010’s enjoyable THE WARD to speak of. In case you’ve been living under a rock or are a non-genre fan who happened to stumble upon this website, this is a man who gave audiences the likes of DARK STAR, ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13, HALLOWEEN, THE FOG, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, THE THING, CHRISTINE, STAR MAN, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, THEY LIVE, VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED and VAMPIRES. Despite giving audiences some truly wonderful all-time classics of the genre, Carpenter did revisit Snake Plissken for 1996’s poorly-received ESCAPE FROM L.A., but the character’s not been seen from on the big screen since.

The basic notion of Carpenter’s 1981 ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK saw Kurt Russell donning an eye-patch and spewing out some of the most machismo-heavy dialogue known to man, all accompanied by a classic Carpenter score. Russell’s Plissken is an effortlessly cool convict who is sent by officials into a maximum security prison wasteland that was formally Manhattan. His mission is to rescue Donal Pleasance’s President and save the day. A remake has been on the cards for a while, with Studio Canal and New Line Cinema both previously planning a redo before 20th Century Fox picked up the rights.

As far as the remake goes, there’s no director or star attached at this point, although names previously rumoured to be up for the Plissken gig were Tom Hardy, Jon Bernthal, Dan Stevens, and Charlie Hunnam. It was also suggested that the redo will be about Snake leading a ragtag group through New York on a mission to rescue the President, with Plissken also believed to be suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder throughout the film.

Whilst we’re still not exactly on board with the idea of remaking such a long-time favourite of all here at STARBURST, the inclusion of John Carpenter, even as just an executive producer, does put us a little at ease on the idea. Still, we’d rather it just didn’t happen if truth be known.

Fincher and Affleck Remaking Hitchcock’s STRANGERS ON A TRAIN

For those of you still struggling to erase the Vince Vaughn-starring PSYCHO remake from your minds, fear not, for a new Hitchcock remake is on the way. Given the positive response to GONE GIRL from fans and critics alike, we’re happy to hear that David Fincher, Ben Affleck and Gillian Flynn are reteaming for a redo of Hitchcock’s classic STRANGERS ON A TRAIN.

Deadline is reporting the news of the project, which will be a retelling of Hitchcock’s 1951 film, itself based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel. The original movie featured Farley Granger and Robert Walker as two men who enter a pact to exchange murders. Walker’s character, Bruno, kills Granger’s wife, but then Granger’s Guy has doubts over killing Bruno’s father. It’s believed that Affleck will be starring as Guy in the film, who will be an actor rather than a tennis pro as in the original. When Guy’s private plane breaks down, he gets given a lift by a wealthy stranger… which is where things take a turn for the sinister.

Expect more on this retelling, currently titled STRANGERS, as it develops.

Last Chance to Support Roddy Piper-Starring PORTAL TO HELL

Horror fan? Wrestling fan? John Carpenter fan? Well the “Rowdy” Roddy Piper-starring PORTAL TO HELL could be just up your street. As long-time genre fans with a penchant for Carpenter and a subscription to the WWE Network, this short film most definitely has our attention.

After starting an Indiego campaign last year to fund the tale, Vivieno Caldinelli and Matt Watts have now added a stretch goal. Since reaching their initial target of $21,000, the new goal is $30,000… and the last day to contribute is today!

In case you’re not familiar with the project, here’s word from Caldinelli, Watts and wrestling icon Piper:

{starburst}http://youtu.be/7UYpY35q1nc{/starburst}

The official word on the short reads:

Imagine, if you will, that the Great Old One, Cthulhu himself, had a secret soft spot for Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn in Overboard and convinced the great John Carpenter to return to Lovecraft mode to write him a part in it. We’d like to think the result would be very much like Portal To Hell!!!

Jack is a simple man with simple needs. Mostly he just needs to be left alone to read his book. It’s a good book and he likes it, or at least he would if the tenants of the building he manages weren’t so damn needy themselves. And it’s not just blown fuses and clogged toilets here … no, when the building power goes out the culprit is a pair of tenants opening a portal to hell in the basement. Does this count as building maintenance? Is battling the supernatural part of Jack’s job description? Maybe not, but if Jack can’t close the portal the entire building and – let’s face it – the whole world is screwed.

AVATAR 2 Delayed by a Year

Whilst some people wanted an AVATAR sequel, did anybody really want three of them? As long-confirmed by James Cameron, that’s exactly what we’re going to be getting. The plan was to release AVATAR 2 in December 2016, but that’s now been changed. Yep, the film has hit some delays. This time it appears that the script and story continuity are the issue.

Speaking at a New Zealand Screen Advisory Board event, Cameron said, “There’s a layer of complexity in getting the story to work as a saga across three films that you don’t get when you’re making a standalone film. We’re writing three simultaneously. And we’ve done that so that everything tracks throughout the three films. We’re not just going to do one and then make up another one and another one after that and parallel with that, we’re doing all the design. So we’ve designed all the creatures and the environments.”

The plan is still to shoot all three films back-to-back, but AVATAR 2 is now scheduled for December 2017 rather than the initial Christmas 2016 release. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver are all currently on board to return to Pandora.

Hitting screens in 2009, the first AVATAR went on to become the highest grossing movie of all time, taking over $2.75 billion at the global box office.

Potentially Huge Spoilers on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Future

Before we get too far into this news piece, be warned that there are some potentially huge spoilers ahead for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. All of this is purely rumour at this stage, but the source is Latino Review, so often on the money when it comes to this stuff. You’ve be warned…

SPOILERS

This latest batch of news pertains to the fate of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as there seems to be a wave of change ahead for The Avengers. We were already expecting a major fallout between Captain America and Iron Man in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, but below is the latest story coming out on just what else will be going down in the MCU over the next few years.

– AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON will see a new group of Avengers assembled, led by Cap. Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, not to mention Vision, are said to be part of the new team. The story of the finale of the film seeing Hulk shot off into space is also still presumed to happen.

– CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR will feature the revelation that Bucky Barnes as the Winter Soldier was responsible for the death of Tony Stark’s father, Howard. Stark becomes distant and leaves The Avengers, although Black Panther makes his MCU debut. More importantly, the end of CIVIL WAR will see something that’s been speculated about for a long time now: the death of Steve Rogers. And yes, this will be at the hands of the returning Brock Rumlow, who will now be known as Crossbones.

– THOR: RAGNORAK will see the death of a lot of Asgardians, with some of Asgard’s fallen faces also brought back to life. The film will culminate with Thor being held in some sort of galactic prison.

– By the time AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR PART 1 rolls around, the titular team will be much changed. With Steve Rogers dead, Thor imprisoned, and Iron Man AWOL, one of the biggest surprises of this movie will be the inclusion of Spider-Man! Yes, the Wallcrawler will apparently be joining the MCU. The Latino Review report claims that a deal has indeed been agreed between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios for the Wallcrawler to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting with the first part of INFINITY WAR after the deal was agreed too late for Webhead to appear in CIVIL WAR as initially planned. The Avengers team at this point will be made up of some fresh faces, such as Doctor Strange, Ant-Man, Black Panther and potentially any of the Netflix crew (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron First) and even the Inhumans. It’s believed that INFINITY WAR PART 1 will not feature any of the heroes of Marvel’s first two Phases.

– And with AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR PART 2, that’s where all of the earlier heroes will make their returns… including Steve Rogers. It’s worth noting that during Rogers’ absence it’s believed that Bucky Barnes will have stepped up and taken the famous shield and become Captain America.

Phew! So there we have it, a whole load of potentially huge news. As mentioned though, treat all of the above as purely rumour for now. Still, we’d bet our bottom dollar on a whole lot of the above actually happening.

As ever, expect more on future MCU films as and when we get it. Up next for Marvel Studios is AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON on April 24th then ANT-MAN on July 17th.
