Earlier this year, there was a rumour that Sony was looking to get Spider-Man involved with the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe. THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 was a big disappointment to the studio (and to us poor long-time Spidey fans), and it seems like Sony is at a loss as to what to do with the Wallcrawler. Nothing more came of the ‘Spidey to join The Avengers’ rumour, but now comes word that there was indeed some substance to these rumours.

At the end of last month, Sony was the victim of a huge hacking scandal, with several movies being leaked out and a whole host of confidential information being made available, including plenty of e-mails. The Wall Street Journal has now published a report based on e-mails between Sony execs that shows that Marvel Studios and Sony were in talks to have Spider-Man appear in the upcoming CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR. Peter Parker, of course, played a huge role in the CIVIL WAR comic book arc, essentially caught in the middle of Captain America and Iron Man in their butting of heads over the Superhero Registration Act. It even got to the point where Stark persuaded Peter to unmask on live television and reveal to the world who Spider-Man really was; a comic book panel that is a modern-day classic image.

The report claims that, as recently as October, there were serious talks between Marvel Studios/Disney and Sony about involving Spider-Man in the MCU. The plan, as well as an appearance in the third CAPTAIN AMERICA movie, was for Marvel Studios to produce a new trilogy of Spider-Man movies, with Sony Pictures still retaining creative control, marketing and distribution. It’s believed that all of the talks have now fallen apart, although whether that changes in the future, we’ll have to wait and see.

As it stands, Sony is now focused on THE SINISTER SIX, with VENOM still in development and a female-based team-up movie being planned. And then there’s that horrible rumour that the studio is planning a solo movie for a young Aunt May.

Expect more on this if and when it develops.
