Movie News: Harrison Ford Injured on STAR WARS Set

Harrison-Ford

Terrible news coming from the Pinewood set of the much-anticipated STAR WARS EPISODE VII today as it’s been reported that Harrison Ford has injured his ankle.

Thames Valley Police were called to Pinewood Studios, where the film is shooting, in response to reports “reports of a 71-year-old man being injured by a garage door.”

Ford was airlifted to John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, where he is apparently being treated for a fracture. Reports suggest the actor was injured when the door of the Milennium Falcon fell on him.

The UK Health and Safety Executive will investigate the incident. The production will continue in the meantime.

We wish him a speedy recovery, and hope this is the only incident to befall the production.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII opens December 15th 2015, and the untitled STAR WARS spin-off movie hits the following year on December 16th.

Book News: DESTINY QUEST Cancelled

The fantasy adventure game book series DESTINY QUEST will not have its fourth book published by Gollancz, according to the author, Michael J. Ward.  We understand that Gollancz has no plans to commission a fourth book in the DESTINY QUEST series. We know of no plans that any publisher intends to continue the series.

DESTINY QUEST was seen by many as a revival of the old school adventure game books popular in the eighties, but used clever game mechanics and cunning storytelling tricks to give it a video game feel to the books.

Mr Ward told STARBURST Magazine “I think in this day and age, gamebooks are always going to be a bit of a high-risk venture. I feel quite privileged that I got to write three books in the series that I am really proud of, each book, expanding and improving on the last. Of course, I am disappointed that Gollancz did not have enough confidence and faith in the series to extend my contract, but it came as no surprise.”

We have not been able to get an official response from Gollancz on this matter at this time.

The books have recently enjoyed a growing popularity and there has been a steady rise in interest in adventure game books in general; there’s even a Fighting Fantasy Convention launching this year. The author stated on his blog that he has not ruled out a crowd-funding campaign. He said “Television series get cancelled – that’s pretty permanent. But books are different. They refuse to stay down.”

Gaming News: BANNER SAGA Composer Fined Over Rejected AFM Agreement

It seems there is no shortage of problems The Banner Saga runs into. Even after escaping the ridiculous trademark dispute invoked by social gaming company King, one of the major creative forces within the developer Stoic has now run into an entirely new mess. Renowned for his work on the likes of Journey and flOw, composer Austin Wintory is being fined $50,000 by the American Federation of Musicians. The reason for this was breaching an agreement which was forced on the AFM members, and widely rejected by the video game industry as a whole.

Taking his situation to YouTube, the composer explained that in 2012 the AFM Video Game/Interactive Media Agreement (VIMA) was put together by committee. Wintory cites in his video that no AFM member was given the opportunity to vote upon its implementation that same year; furthermore, he states that it was rejected universally by video game publishers and developers alike. Due to AFM having yet to replace or modify the VIMA, and despite having gone unused since its creation, he claims that “no AFM musician has been able to work on a new video game score for almost two years.”

Openly calling VIMA a “prohibition” which prevents artists from earning a living, he further explained that any composers can only work without AFM sanction for the past two years. Due to his previous criticisms of VIMA and the lack of progress, Wintory also considered this to be the result of him being targeted by the Federation.

Interestingly, only a few days prior to this video being released, the AFM announced that they were in negotiations with Microsoft for a new deal.

The video can be seen in full below, and Wintry has begun responding to the most common questions asked within the comments section.

Movie News: New Set of JURASSIC WORLD Images Released

While there’s still no dinosaur reveals in the following images, we do get a good look at the key leads, including Bryce Dallas Howard (in inappropriate pant suit – that thing’s gonna get muddy in two minutes) and PARKS AND RECREATION’s Chris Pratt, who’s about to cement his leading man status in August’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. Don’t ask us who those wide-eyed kids are though, but isn’t that little fella delightfully Spielbergian in his moppety wonder!

JURASSIC WORLD opens for business June 12th 2015.

Movie News: GAME OF THRONES Writer Lands MAGIC THE GATHERING Adaptation

Further to January’s first report regarding a potential MAGIC: THE GATHERING movie in development at 20th Century Fox, comes news of a new, very apt screenwriter joining the project. Working from an existing draft by the ubiquitous Simon Kinberg (the X-MEN franchise, STAR WARS REBELS, the STAR WARS standalones, THE FANTASTIC FOUR), will be Bryan Cogman, who’s no stranger to the fantasy genre after writing, producing and story editing a little show you might have heard of called GAME OF THRONES.

There’s no further news as to what the plot of MAGIC: THE GATHERING will focus on, which, given its very nature, is open to almost limitless possibilities. Similar to Duncan Jones’ WORLD OF WARCRAFT, Hollywood has really just purchased a universe rather than a defined set of characters and narrative. Anything could happen, and being a fan, or even mildly aware, of the popular card game will definitely not be a prerequisite to enjoying the feature.

We’ll have more on this project as it continues to develop. For more information read our previous post HERE.

Movie News: Carla Laemmle, R.I.P.

Carla-Laemmle

Carla Laemmle, one of the last links to old Hollywood and Universal Pictures, in particular, has passed away aged 104.

The niece of Universal founder Carl laemmle, she was a successful movie actress in her own right, and appeared in both THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1925) with Lon Chaney and DRACULA (1931) with Bela Lugosi.

She was famous for speaking the first line of the classic vampire film, as a coach passenger accompanying Dwight Frye’s Renfield., “Among the rugged peaks that crown down upon the Borgo Pass are found crumbling castles of a bygone age.

Born Rebecca Isabelle Laemmle, she remained a favourite with horror fans to the very end, and recently appeared in A HISTORY OF HORROR WITH MARK GATISS for the BBC.

Our thoughts go out to her family and friends.

Gaming News: PANDEMIC Game Creator to Tackle THUNDERBIRDS

Standby for action! Modiphius Entertainment have announced that they will be producing a THUNDERBIRDS themed co-operative boardgame, designed by none other than Matt Leacock.

THUNDERBIRDS is a cult 1960s British science-fiction television series, created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, about an organisation called International Rescue. The group uses a family of heroic pilots in special vehicles to fix global problems. Matt Leacock is best known for his smash hit co-operative boardgame PANDEMIC, in which players work together to prevent the spread of deadly diseases across the world. Bringing the two together seems like a perfect match.

The game is still currently in the design stages, but we have been told that Modiphus will be “producing some awesome miniature Thunderbird machines as part of the package” and that the game will keep its iconic and world famous THUNDERBIRDS look and feel.

The company’s Publishing Director Chris Birch told STARBURST Magazine, “With Matt Leacock at the helm we’re going to be seeing a great cross-over game of perilous rescue where you get to use the awesome Thunderbird machines. Whether you know the classic THUNDERBIRDS TV show or not, it’s promising action and rising tension across the globe. I’ve seen the prototype and I’m really excited, Matt’s had some genius ideas to translate the thrills of the show to the tabletop. ”

Gamers wanting to find out more can sign up for updates via Modiphus’s website here.

Movie News: BATMAN V. SUPERMAN Nets its Aquaman

After several months of rumours concerning his involvement, GAME OF THRONES’ Jason Momoa is now revealed to be donning the outfit of the Dweller of the Depths, Aquaman, in 2016’s BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE.

While Warner Bros. hasn’t confirmed Mamoa’s involvement themselves, Drew McWeeney of Hitfix has announced that he ‘can confirm that he will be playing the part, and that Zack Snyder has already finalized his designs for the character so shooting can take place soon.’

On the subject of the catastrophic destruction that occurred in last year’s MAN OF STEEL, Hitfix added ‘Someone else who’s not particularly happy about what happened in that film is Aquaman. I’m not sure if that’s the actual name they’ll use or not, but what we’re hearing is that he is not pleased about the World Engine and what it did to the Indian Ocean. He will not have a major role in the film, but he will make an appearance, and it definitely sets him up to return once Snyder gets to JUSTICE LEAGUE.’

BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE opens April 29th 2016, followed by JUSTICE LEAGUE sometime in 2017.

Movie News: Frank Grillo Hopeful of Crossbones in CAPTAIN AMERICA 3

Last seen in a bad way at the end of CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, chances are that Frank Grillo’s Brock Rumlow, aka Crossbones, will be returning to torment Cap and the MCU somewhere down the line.

Speaking to Collider, Grillo said, “I’m cautiously optimistic that you will see me in the not too distant future in the next installment of CAPTAIN AMERICA.”

On where the character could go from here, he added, “We’ve had multiple discussions about what comes after that, that thing. So, you know, it’s obvious Rumlow is covered in rubble and burned to a crisp at the end, but you see he’s still there. They don’t do that for no reason.”

In terms of appearance, he cheekily concluded, “He needs a costume! Coincidentally it could be a mask with a crossbones on it.”

CAPTAIN AMERICA 3 is currently scheduled for a 6th May, 2016 release, whilst CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER gets a DVD and Blu-ray release on 9th September.
