Gaming News: UNCHARTED 4 Announced + Teaser Trailer Revealed!

There was plenty to get excited about at this year’s E3. If MIRROR’S EDGE or TOMB RAIDER aren’t quite your thing, than perhaps Naughty Dog’s announcement for the fourth in the popular UNCHARTED series might just hit the spot. A THIEF’S END will be featuring that now classic gaming character Nathan Drake and his usual sidekick Sully.

The trailer, which was debuted during the closing seconds of Sony’s E3 press conference, shows a weathered Drake, but what would an UNCHARTED game be without him bruised and bloody? While the trailer offers something at once familiar and compelling, one thing’s for sure, it’ll be one to look forward to.

The title does have a huge weight of finality to it, so could this really be the end? The trailer boasts a 2015 release date, though nothing specific has been confirmed.

Movie News: STAR WARS Standalone to be Filmed in UK

The first standalone STAR WARS movie will be filmed at the same location that EPISODE VII is currently being made – Pinewood Studios.

And who disclosed this decision? Lucasfilm maybe? Disney perhaps? Kathleen Kennedy? Nope, it was, in fact, Chancellor George Osborne whilst visiting the set of Episode VII yesterday. He posted the announcement on his Twitter account along with a photo…

Osborne also issued the following  statement: “Lucasfilm and Disney’s decision to shoot the STAR WARS standalone movie in the UK is testament to the incredible talent in Britain. This will mean more jobs and more investment. It is great news for people working at Pinewood Studios, from the set designers to the carpenters.”

“As Chancellor I have been determined that we back our brilliant creative industries which is why we have invested in skills and training as well as providing tax relief for films, high-end TV, animation, video games and regional theatre,” he added. “‘The further changes the government made to the film tax relief at Budget 2014 will support our highly skilled, innovative creative sectors so that they continue to thrive and encourage more films to be made in the UK.”

Gareth Edwards will direct the first standalone STAR WARS movie, fresh from his box office stomping hit Godzilla, which despite the negativity seems on target to make a healthy profit.

Gary Whitta (THE WALKING DEAD) has been hired for scriptwriting duties but the film itself will not be directly related to the new trilogy. Rumours have suggested that the standalone movies, of which there will be at least three, will focus on characters like Boba Fett and Yoda.

Disney intends to release a new STAR WARS related movie every year starting with EPISODE VII on December 18th, 2015. Christmas presents don’t get much better than that for STAR WARS fans!

Movie News: Sonic the Hedgehog Racing to the Big Screen

Here’s hoping it fares much better than 1993’s SUPER MARIO BROS., but Sonic the Hedgehog has been confirmed to be heading to the big screen. Sony Pictures Entertainment/Columbia and Marza Animation Planet announced the production earlier today.

The rapid, blue hedgehog is said to be getting a movie that’s part live-action, part CGI. In terms of the look, early reports suggests that it may look similar to THE SMURFS. Here’s hoping the film gives us something far better than those movies, at least. In terms of talent, the film will be written by Evan Susser and Van Robichaux, with Neal Mortiz serving as the driving force behind the movie with his Original Film company. Marza’s Takeshi Ito and Mie Onishi will serve as executive producers.

As for the plot of this movie, it’s said that Sonic will go up against his long-term big-bad, Dr. Eggman (Dr. Robotnik for long-time fans of the hedgehog). The current plan is for Sonic’s tone, spirit and kid-friendly appeal to be implemented in the film. In fairness, the character does have a pretty hefty audience already, having been around for over 20 years. Sonic-based titles are a billion dollar franchise, with over 140 million games sold.

On the news, Columbia Pictures’ Hannah Minghella said, “There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic the Hedgehog, and a built-in international fanbase. Along with our wonderful creative partners at Marza, we’re looking to capture everything that generations of fans know and love about Sonic while also growing his audience wider than ever before.”

Marza Animation’s Masanao Maeda added, “Sonic has had dozen of adventures on the console and the small screen, and we’re thrilled that he’s now coming to the big screen. Sony Pictures has had great success with hybrid animated and live-action features, and we’re confident that this collaboration will bring a fresh take to Sonic, while still capturing everything that the fans love about him.”

Expect more on this movie as it develops.

Blu-ray News: David Lynch Has Interviewed TWIN PEAKS’ Leland Palmer, 25 Years After his Death…

Further to the recent announcement of the fantastically fully-loaded TWIN PEAKS Blu-ray (dubbed THE ENTIRE MYSTERY), comes the first teaser for some of the brand new content from David Lynch himself. In one of the exclusive features, Lynch conducts a private interview with the Palmer family 25 years on. Not the actors who ‘portrayed’ the Palmer family, the ‘actual’ Palmer family themselves. Here’s a short clip from the interview, featuring Leland Palmer (aka Ray Wise) enjoying a chat with the master filmmaker and TWIN PEAKS co-creator. Damn fine stuff!

TV News: Marvel’s DAREDEVIL Has Found Its Kingpin

With Charlie Cox now on board as Matt Murdock, Marvel’s Netflix-exclusive DAREDEVIL has found its Kingpin. Step forward, Vincent D’Onofrio.

Marvel confirmed the news of D’Onofrio’s addition as Wilson Fisk then described this version of the character as “a powerful businessman whose interests in the future of Hell’s Kitchen will bring him into conflict with the blind attorney Matt Murdock and his alter ego Daredevil.”

Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s Head of Television, added, “We’re incredibly proud to have an actor with the gravitas and versatility of Vincent joining Marvel’s DAREDEVIL in such an integral role. Wilson Fisk is an iconic villain whose cunning and power make him the dangerous equal of our hero.”

D’Onofrio is likely best known to most audiences for his turn as the unhinged Pvt. Pyle in 1987’s FULL METAL JACKET, and he’s been recently cast in Colin Trevorrow’s JURASSIC WORLD. As for Fisk, he was played by Michael Clarke Duncan in the actually-rather-good DAREDEVIL (yes, we said it) back in 2003.

The official synopsis for the DAREDEVIL show reads:

Marvel’s DAREDEVIL follows the journey of Matt Murdock, who was blinded as a young boy but imbued with extraordinary senses, now fighting against injustice by day as a lawyer, and by night as the super hero Daredevil in modern day Hell’s Kitchen, New York City.

DAREDEVIL is the first of several Netflix-exclusive Marvel shows, the Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones all getting their own solo shows, with the four shows culminating in a Defenders mini-series.

TV News: Featurette Introduces THE FLASH’s S.T.A.R. Labs’ Characters

With anticipation currently building for The CW’s ARROW spin-off, THE FLASH, the network has released a brief featurette looking at the Barry Allen-centric show’s supporting cast.

{starburst} http://youtu.be/8EqzJnZ3a8A{/starburst}

Given how well the last season of ARROW went, it’s safe to say that fans have high expectations for THE FLASH. In his appearances in ARROW, Grant Gustin did brilliantly as Barry Allen. Here’s hoping that he can carry that forward into his own show.

Gustin, last seen involved in a certain accident during ARROW’s Season 2 mid-season finale, is Barry Allen, aka The Flash. Joining him in the show are the pair of Danielle Panabaker and Carlos Valdes as Caitlin Snow/Killer Frost and Cisco Ramon/Vibe, respectively; a duo that have already appeared in ARROW’s Season 2. Making up the rest of THE FLASH are Rick Gosnett as Eddie Thawne/Professor Zoom, Candice Patton as Iris West, Jesse L. Martin as Detective West, Tom Cavanagh as S.T.A.R. Labs’ Harrison Wells, Michelle Harrison as Nora Allen, Patrick Sabongui as Central City Police Captain David Singh, and an unspecified role for former Flash John Wesley Shipp.

This ARROW spin-off has recently been confirmed as airing on Tuesdays during the fall in the US, aka autumn for us Brits. As for just where and when this show will find a UK home, we’ll bring you those deets as and when we get it.

Audio News: Radio 4 has DANGEROUS VISIONS

Fans of audio science fiction in the UK are in for a treat this June; Radio 4 will be running a series of dramas and other programmes starting Saturday June 14th.

The series is themed around dystopian visions hence DANGEROUS VISIONS. For those too young to remember this was also a seminal collection of short stories edited by Harlan Ellison and published in 1967 that was accredited with helping to define what would later be called New Wave.

This particular collection starts on Saturday with an adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s wonderful THE ILLUSTRATED MAN. Among many highlights are Derek Jacobi and Hayley Atwell in Bradbury’s MARTIAN CHRONICLES (21st June) and James Purefoy stars with Jessica Raine in a new version of DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC SHEEP. There is also a lot of work by new authors.

The series runs until the end of June and winds up with a Matt Haig story on June 29th entitled THE KEEPERS. Of course all titles will also be available on iPlayer for a further seven days.

Full details are on the Radio 4 website: www.bbc.co.uk

Audio News: GAME OF THRONES, SHERLOCK and More to Feature in Classic FM Special

Who doesn’t love a great TV theme! Those short, catchy musical intros that endeavour to hook the viewer and help set the tone for what they’re about to watch. As a child growing up in the ‘70s and ‘80s, my young impressionable ears were constantly sonically bombarded by the melodious offerings of Mike Post, Dudley Simpson, Alexander Courage, David Rose and countless others. To this day I have yet to hear anything that can top the harmonica driven, western flavoured THE ROCKFORD FILES, or the wistfully melancholic TAXI themes. In fact, the title sequences and themes seem to be a rare thing in this day and age. Or are they?

Take GAME OF THRONES, SHERLOCK and DOCTOR WHO for instance. Instantly recognisable themes and distinctive title sequences and, as it happens, the music from these three shows are to feature on an upcoming Classic FM programme.

TV and movie composer Howard Goodall’s weekly show SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES is to have a dedicated TV special later this month, featuring music from the aforementioned shows, as well as DOWNTON ABBEY, BROADCHURCH and RED DWARF.

Geoffrey Burgon’s score from the 1975 DOCTOR WHO story ‘Terror of the Zygons’ will be played on the programme, along with Murray Gold’s ‘Rose’s Theme’ from 2005’s ‘The End of the World’ and ‘Together or Not at All’ from ‘The Angels Take Manhattan’.

SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES’ TV Themes Special begins its four-part run on Saturday, June 21 at 5pm on Classic FM, with the first part focusing on period drama. The following parts then focus on sci-fi, crime and, finally, recent shows such as HOUSE OF CARDS.

Gaming News: Best of the E3 Trailers

Here we are yet again, E3 rears its head and we aim arrows at it in the event that it displeases the gaming masses. E3 is an annual gaming event which allows publishers and developers to show what games they will be releasing. The event is held in LA and attracts thousands of people. The pressure was on, as this is the first E3 since the launch of Microsoft’s Xbox One and Sony PS4. Nintendo has their Wii U and while it may not always be a talking point, Nintendo still has its fans and remains relevant.

Overall E3 delivered the goods, and while the press conferences at times were tedious they were able to retain interest. This year was literally all about the games and not gimmicks or social media announcements. STARBURST has gathered together 10 trailers of anticipated games released this year and next. While the trailers and gameplay videos don’t reveal much of their stories, they do offer a glimpse of the visuals. Spectacular is the only word to describe these games as the power of the new consoles is apparent. Well, enough talk! Scroll down for a televisual feast that will fill your gaming heart with glee!

Movie News: TMNT Documentary TURTLE POWER On The Way

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been a childhood staple for multiple generations and a truly global franchise. Those heroes in a half shell are indomitable and with the latest (and expensive) Michael Bay produced film on the way, it’s safe to say popularity isn’t waning.

For those looking for the whole truth, and nothing but, will want to get in on Paramount’s swanky documentary, Turtle Power: The Definitive History of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The documentary, written and directed by Randall Lobb, offers a full 30 year retrospective, one that’s sure to gear you for the new film. It may even just remind you why you fell in love with those sewer dwelling, pizza loving ninjas in the first place.

The official synopsis: ‘In the spring of 1984, a strange new comic book sat beside cash registers in select shops, too big to fit in the racks, and too weird to ignore.  Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles presented a completely original breed of superhero. It was too bizarre, too crazy. It broke all the rules and should never have worked. Until it sold out. Again and again and again. For 30 years. Now, peek under the shell and see how this so-called ‘happy accident’ defied every naysayer to become one of the most popular and beloved franchises in the world.’

{starburst}http://youtu.be/6qbymj_yAfo{/starburst}

Excited? The documentary will be released on DVD, VOD and Digital HD on August 12th.
