Movie News: First Trailer Hits for SHARKNADO 2: THE SECOND ONE

With SHARKNADO 2: THE SECOND ONE airing in the US next month, the first teaser trailer has been released for the sharks-meet-tornadoes sequel. For fans(?) of the first film, it looks as if you’ll be getting a lot more of the same this time out, just with the action moved to New York City.

{starburst}http://youtu.be/3e0ieIpBhsg{/starburst}

In terms of actual synopsis, there’s no official blurbage for SHARKNADO 2. To break it down, the two bigger names from the first film are back, as are the shark/tornado mash-ups, and the action is set in NYC. Joining the returning Ian Ziering and the riddled mess known as Tara Reid are Vivica A. Fox, Mark McGrath, Kelly Osborne, Judd Hirsch, Andy Dick, Judah Friedlander, Perez Hilton, Biz Markie, Sandra Delton/Pepa from Salt-N-Pepa (let’s talk about sharks, baby), Robert Klein, and professional wrestling machine Kurt Angle.

SHARKNADO 2: THE SECOND ONE gets its SyFy channel premiere in the US at 9pm on 30th July. We don’t have an exact UK release/airing date at this stage, but it’s expected to follow shortly after the US showing. Oh, and it’s worth noting that a SHARKNADO 3 has already been confirmed to follow THE SECOND ONE.

In case you missed the madness the first time round, you can refresh yourself with our SHARKNADO review here.

Movie News: Two More Names in Talks to Direct ANT-MAN

In what is the first real blip on the Marvel Studios radar, it appears that the studio is making a royal arse of replacing Edgar Wright and finding a new director for ANT-MAN. After Wright and Marvel parted ways, the gig was offered to ANCHORMAN’s Adam McKay. He declined. The offer then went out to DODGEBALL’s Rawson Marshall Thurber. He declined. Their third choice was ZOMBIELAND’s Ruben Fleischer. Having recently had a child and being eyed for GHOSTBUSTERS 3, he’s now said to be out. So, step forward the next two contenders.

Deadline is reporting that Marvel and Disney have now turned their attention to BAD NEIGHBOURS’ Nicholas Stoller and GOON’s Michael Dowse. It’s claimed that both of these have been approached by the powers that be and that they are both in some form of talks. So far, Marvel Studios have hit a home run with pretty much every single one of their MCU outings. With Wright having walked due to his script getting completely rehashed, and with several others saying “no, thanks”, ANT-MAN is proving to be a tad troublesome for Marvel and the House of Mouse. And then there’s the issue of the names that have been approached. Okay, we can just about buy the director of ANCHORMAN getting involved due to Paul Rudd playing Scott Lang/Ant-Man. We can buy Fleischer getting involved because we enjoyed ZOMBIELAND. But the director of DODGEBALL, the director of BAD NEIGHBOURS, the director of GOON? Really? The guys who directed these films are wanted by Marvel Studios to direct the often complex and heartbreaking tale of Ant-Man? Granted, Hank Pym, usually the source of the deep, dark and twisted Ant-Man stories, is seemingly playing second fiddle to Rudd’s Scott Lang in the MCU, but are the studio trying to make ANT-MAN into a comedy?

Whoever eventually signs up for the ANT-MAN directing gig will find themselves overseeing Rudd as Lang, Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, and unconfirmed roles for Evangeline Lilly, Patrick Wilson, and Corey Stoll.

ANT-MAN is set to kick-off Marvel’s Phase Three of films on 17th July, 2015.

Movie News: Scream Queen Jessica Cameron to Star in SAVE YOURSELF

Andrews-Cameron

Ever-busy and popular Scream Queen Jessica Cameron is set to star – as well as co-produce – SAVE YOURSELF, an exciting female-driven horror film which begins shooting this Summer in Ontario, Canada. Directed by award-winning director Ryan M. Andrews (SICK, BLACK EVE) from his own script the film will also star Ry Barrett (DESPERATE SOULS, ANTISOCIAL) as the antagonist.

The plot, from the press release:

En route to L.A., director Crystal Lacroix, along with by-the-numbers producer Dawn Summerville, neurotic writer Lizzy Miller, and star sisters Kim and Sasha Tobin, are riding high after a successful screening of their new horror film. But when Crystal goes missing at a rest stop, their mood suddenly changes. The others, splitting up

to search for Crystal, spot an isolated farmhouse and enlist the help of its owners, quickly discovering that appearances are not always what they seem. Life imitates art as all five ladies find themselves pitted against a deranged couple hell-bent on using them for their mysterious research. Who will survive and what will be the fate of their ultimate discovery?

Cameron, who is currently going down a storm touring festivals in the US with her directorial début TRUTH OR DARE and stars in the hotly-tipped UTERO said, “This script is the sexiest and smartest female-driven horror flick that I have had the pleasure to read and I cannot wait to bring it to life with Ryan

Andrews adds, “I love Jean-Luc Godard’s quote ‘all you need for a movie is a gun and a girl.’ In the same way all you need for a horror is blood and a girl – and we’ve got five girls. It’s definitely going to be fun and sexy, but most importantly the women are not just one-dimensional. There is a lot of depth and development to their characters. And as a die-hard horror fan, I know just how important this is. It can’t just be another pretty face. There needs to be layers there for anyone to care when that face gets smashed.

A fantastic teaser poster has also been released:

Movie News: Fully Restored DAS CABINET DES DR. CALIGARI Getting Theatrical and Blu-ray Release

Exciting news has just hit regarding the next release from Eureka! Entertainment’s Masters of Cinema series! Read on for full details…

From the Press Release:

The definitive restoration of the first true horror film, the 1920 silent masterpiece that is DAS CABINET DES DR. CALIGARI will be released theatrically on 29 August 2014 and will open at the BFI Southbank and other selected cinemas nationwide, and will feature as part of Scalarama’s core programme throughout September (check out www.scalarama.com for more details). This will be followed by a Dual Format (Blu-ray & DVD) edition as part of Eureka’s award-winning the Masters of Cinema Series on 29 September 2014.

One of the most iconic masterpieces in cinema history, Robert Wiene’s  shook filmgoers worldwide and changed the direction of the art form. Now presented in a definitive restoration, the film’s chilling, radically expressionist vision is set to grip viewers again.

Incalculably influential, the film’s nightmarishly jagged sets, sinister atmospheric and psychological emphasis left an immediate impact in its wake (horror, film noir, and gothic cinema would all be shaped directly by it). But this diabolical tale nevertheless stands alone – now more mesmerising than ever.

“At a local carnival in a small German town, hypnotist Dr. Caligari presents the somnambulist Cesare, who can purportedly predict the future of curious fairgoers. But at night, the doctor wakes Cesare from his sleep to enact his evil bidding…”

Comic News: Gerard Way to Write SPIDER-MAN

Whether you’re a fan of My Chemical Romance or not, the band’s creative direction (on their early albums at least) was always worth a gander. So, musical opinions aside, Gerard Way is a pretty interesting bloke. Way’s award-winning UMBRELLA ACADEMY comic series has all the dark childhood imaginings of Tim Burton’s best, and loaded with pop culture references. It’s fun, witty and twisted.

Despite his comic credentials, many were surprised when CBR announced that Way would be writing a Spider-Man comic which will tie into Marvel’s up and coming SPIDER-VERSE event. The Spider-Verse, as those who go beyond the films will very well know, is a cornucopia of every Spider-Man from across the universe divides, teaming up to take down Morlun. One of the beautiful things about Marvel is the layers upon layers that often make for some great, intertwining stories.

EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE will feature five of these different Spideys. As of yet, the only insight into Way’s take is ‘What or who is SP//dr’. Jake Wyatt, of Ms Marvel and the Indescribable Hulk, will be pencilling the upcoming issue 5.

If Way’s involvement wasn’t enough to shock you, than maybe Gwen Stacy instead of Peter Parker being Spidey in EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE #2 will. While we’ve had Spider-Woman for decades, it’ll be fascinating to read Stacey cracking wise and saving folks. So, what do you make of all this?

EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE #5 is expected in October.

Movie News: Marvel’s ANT-MAN Lands a New Director

In some breaking news, Deadline is reporting that Marvel Studios have finally found somebody to replace Edgar Wright in directing ANT-MAN. Step forward, Peyton Reed. Reed (below) is best known for directing the likes of BRING IT ON, THE BREAK-UP, and YES MAN.

We mentioned earlier today that Reed, along with ROLE MODELS’ David Wain, was in contention for the gig, and now comes word that he will indeed oversee Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, and Evangeline Lilly, Patrick Wilson and Corey Stoll in unconfirmed roles.

After Wright departed the project, ANCHORMAN’s Adam McKay was first offered the job. After he declined, next in line was DODGEBALL’s Rawson Marshall Thurber. After he declined, it was presumed that ZOMBIELAND’s Reuben Fleischer was in the picture. Deciding to focus on fatherhood and potentially GHOSTBUSTERS 3, Fleischer was ruled out. The latest rumours then brought BAD NEIGHBOURS’ Nicholas Stoller, GOON’s Michael Dowse, Wain, and Reed into the frame, with Reed ultimately landing the gig. In addition to Reed joining the film, McKay will actually be involved in assisting on the movie’s script.

Despite this fiasco, ANT-MAN is still scheduled for a 17th July, 2015 release.

Movie News: Two Names Emerge For DR. STRANGE Role

With this week seemingly bringing word that Director Scott Derrickson will be helming Marvel Studios’ long-rumoured DOCTOR STRANGE movie, it remains to be seen as to just who will fill the role of the Sorcerer Supreme. The early rumour was that the Oscar-winning Jared Leto was the frontrunner for the gig, although two more names are now being linked to the role.

According to Deadline, the two names currently in the frame are STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS’ Benedict Cumberbatch and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES’ Tom Hardy. Whilst we’re fans of Hardy, Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange? Yes, please.

Whilst Derrickson, best known for helming THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE and SINISTER, has recently taken to Twitter to tease his apparent involvement in a Stephen Strange movie, there’s still nothing official coming from Marvel Studios and Disney. That said, both the 8th July, 2016 and the 5th May, 2017 are reserved for unknown MCU movies. Could the good doctor possibly take one of these dates? Stranger things have happened.

Movie News: Jeremy Renner Returning For MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 5

Currently shooting AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, Jeremy Renner has now confirmed that he will also be returning for MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 5.

When asked by Yahoo! if he’ll be appearing in Season 2 of TRUE DETECTIVE, Renner revealed, “It’s kind of unlikely. In fact, I’m kind of strapped time-wise doing AVENGERS 2, and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 5 is rearing its head, and then they want to do another BOURNE movie. It’s unlikely I can find the time right now. And that’s alright. It’s just really high-class problems – pretty awesome to have. Even if I really wanted to do it, which I don’t, I couldn’t.”

With Renner seemingly confirming his M:I5 return as William Brandt, he’ll join Tom Cruise and Simon Pegg in the Christopher McQuarrie-directed film.

At present, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 5 is set for a 25th December 2015 release.

Movie News: Michael Douglas Discusses Edgar Wright’s ANT-MAN Departure

Despite all of the uncertainty over just who will be directing Marvel Studios’ ANT-MAN, the film still has a central cast in place. One of said cast happens to be Michael Douglas, who will be playing Hank Pym in the Phase Three opener. Speaking to Schmoes Know, Douglas and his chin have been discussing Edgar Wright’s recent ANT-MAN departure.

The famed cunning linguist said, “I was very disappointed. I am a big fan of his movies. It’s a very disappointing situation, happened very late in the game. I don’t think anybody’s quite recovered. My heart goes out to Edgar – he’s been involved with the project for a long time. But he’s talented enough that you’ll be hearing a whole lot from him and I’m sure with a little vengeance.”

As well as Douglas, ANT-MAN also has Paul Rudd on board as Scott Lang, with unconfirmed roles for Evangeline Lilly, Patrick Wilson, and Corey Stoll.

In terms of a replacement for Wright, this last week has seen ANCHORMAN’s Adam McKay and DODGEBALL’s Rawson Marshall Thurber both decline the gig, with ZOMBIELAND’s Reuben Fleischer apparently ruling himself out in order to focus on fatherhood and potentially the prospect of GHOSBUTERS 3. Then the end of the week brought rumours of BAD NEIGHBOURS’ Nicholas Stoller and GOON’s Michael Dowse both being in talks with Marvel and Disney. Adding to this, word is now coming out today, courtesy of The Wrap and The Hollywood Reporter, that YES MAN’s Peyton Reed and ROLE MODELS David Wain are also being considered.

Despite these recent issues, ANT-MAN is still scheduled for a 17th July 2015 release.
