TV News: Learn to Speak Dothraki with New GAME OF THRONES Language Course!

GAMES OF THRONES’ sheer scope and ambition is due all the show’s plaudits and acclaim. There just hasn’t been a fantasy show of this calibre before or since. There’s been XENA, there’s been HERCULES, there’s even been MERLIN, but they don’t have a thing on THRONES. Fantasy has always been sadly absent from TV screens, and quality fantasy rarer still.

One of the most compelling aspects of the show was its believability, helped in no small part by language creator David J Peterson’s Dothraki and Valyrian. Many diehard fans will already be able to hold their own in conversation with Daenerys, Grey Worm or  Missandei but now HBO has teamed up with Living Language (a branch of Random House) to bring the complex languages of Westeros and beyond to life.

The guide, compiled by Peterson, will include more than 500 unique Dothraki phrases. There may very well be a guide to the common tongue on its way. HBO will release LIVING LANGUAGE DOTHRAKI: A CONVERSATIONAL LANGUAGE COURSE BASED ON THE HIT ORIGINAL HBO SERIES A GAME OF THRONES on October 7th.

The guide is currently available for pre-order via the HBO shop.

Movie News: DOCTOR STRANGE Lands a Director

Whilst Marvel Studio’s ANT-MAN is currently without a director, another Marvel property seems to have filled that particular void. Until now merely a rumour, Doctor Strange is indeed getting his own solo movie, which will be directed by Scott Derrickson. Derrickson is best known for helming the likes of THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE and SINISTER.

Taking to Twitter, the director confirmed the news, saying, “My next movie will be STRANGE.” He also attached the following image:

In terms of a release date, we’re none the wiser on that front for this Doc Strange effort. It’s worth noting, though, that Marvel Studios have two dates reserved for unknown projects at this stage. Those particular dates are 8th July, 2016 and 5th May, 2017. Could the Sorcerer Supreme swoop in and nab one of said dates?

On the lead role, it’s being speculated by BadassDigest that Oscar-winner Jared Leto is the current favourite for the Stephen Strange gig.

Expect more on this as it develops.

Movie News: Another Director Passes on ANT-MAN

After parting ways with Edgar Wright, Marvel Studios and Disney have been searching for somebody, anybody, to helm their Phase Three opener, ANT-MAN. In the wake of Wright’s departure, the studio apparently offered the gig to ANCHORMAN’s Adam McKay, who in turn ended up turning the job down.

With McKay saying no, Marvel’s attention turned to DODGEBALL’s Rawson Marshall Thurber and ZOMBIELAND’s Ruben Fleischer. In a new report from Variety, it’s claimed that Thurber has now been offered the ANT-MAN directing gig, but that he has also turned the job down.

In some further bad news for Marvel and Disney, it’s claimed that Fleischer is another person who isn’t too keen on ANT-MAN, having just had a child. In addition, he’s also reportedly being eyed to direct GHOSTBUSTERS 3, a film that wouldn’t require an immediate start like ANT-MAN.

As for the cast, ANT-MAN currently has Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Patrick Wilson and Corey Still signed up. Who will direct them for the 17th July, 2015 release is currently up in the air, though.

Expect more on this as it develops.

  jupiter-ascending

A lot of the issue for us was getting it ready for the international release, since the foreign territories need additional time.

Starring Mila Kunis as Jupiter Jones, a normal, poor woman destined to inheritance which will alter the balance of the cosmos Channing Tatum as Caine, a genetically engineered ex-military hunter who arrives on Earth to track her down.

Movie News: Details on Thanos’ GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Appearance

With Josh Brolin now reportedly signed up to play Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s still a little hazy as to just how prominent the Mad Titan’s presence will be in James Gunn’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. Now comes word from Vulture on just how Thanos will appear in Gunn’s space opera.

Apparently, the main way that we will see Thanos used throughout GUARDIANS is as a hologram, much akin to Emperor Palpatine in the STAR WARS saga. He will be in communication with Lee Pace’s Ronan and Karen Gillan’s Nebula during the film, and also mentioned as a major threat by the Guardians team themselves. There is, however, one moment where we will see the ‘big bad’ in the flesh, as he will appear in a scene with Ronan Nebula. As suggested previously, Thanos will play puppeteer here, with him taking centre-stage for THE AVENGERS 3.

Starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, John C. Reilly, Djimon Hounsou, Benicio del Toro, Gregg Henry and Glenn Close, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is released on 1st August.

Movie News: The Late Paul Naschy is Back In New Horror WAX

Wax

The late Paul Naschy, Spanish horror legend and cult icon is set to appear in an upcoming horror film, albeit only in voice.
WAX is written and directed by Victor Matellano and stars Jack Taylor, a famous face on the Eurocult scene and Geraldine Chaplin (daughter of screen legend Charlie). Naschy’s dulcet tones will give voice to an animatronic wax figure, and come from recordings of the star’s theatrical appearances.

“WAX tells the story of a young journalist employed to spend a night at Barcelona’s Wax Museum, where paranormal activities are supposed to be taking place. He must record everything happening there. In the museum there are different wax figures including Dr. Knox one, a sadist cannibal surgeon who loves dressing up as Vincent Price in HOUSE OF WAX. Soon, the journalist will start feeling he is not alone….

It will be Matellano’s first feature film, which will be followed later this year with his re-imaging of José Ramón Larraz’s 1974 classic VAMPYRES, an update originally meant to be helmed by the Larraz himself, before his sad death last year.

Naschy passed away in 2009, and is still loved by the horror community for his passion for the genre.

Wax-poster

The film has just had a screening at the Madrid International Fantastic Film Festival, Nocturna in Spain but no further release details are available.

In the meantime, check out the awesome found footage-inspired teaser.

Movie News: Crowdfunding Underway for Lao Horror, DEAREST SISTER!

The emerging film industry of the Southeast Asian nation of Laos already has a champion of horror movies, its first and sole female director Mattie Do. She is one of currently only four professional film directors in the entirety of the country, the group consisting of three men who produce comedy, thrillers and romantic drama and “the crazy horror chick that’s calculating how much pig blood I can buy for the cash I’ve got in my pocket.”

Her first film Chanthaly was made for under $5,000, and after premiering internationally at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas it screened all over the world to audience and critical acclaim. Her sophomore feature, for which a crowdfunding campaign is currently underway, is titled Nong Hak, which translates to Dearest Sister in English. Its official synopsis reads thus:

Nong Hak tells the story of a village girl from southern Laos who travels to Vientiane to care for her rich cousin who has mysteriously lost her sight, and somehow gained the ability to communicate with the dead. When the poor girl realises that her cousin is receiving messages from the spirits that allow her to win the lottery, she has to choose between nursing her cousin back to health or keeping sick in order to get rich herself.

Based around numerous real-life tales of old people receiving prophetic animal dreams and dead relatives appearing before their bereaved families for one final visitation in which they impart clues to winning lottery numbers, it will also examine the various roles of women in Lao class hierarchies and deal with the locally uneasy subject of interracial marriage. In Do’s own words, “it’s a film about socioeconomic disparity, gender inequality… and ghosts… and blood … and murder… and ghostly bloody murder!”

Having already raised $15,000, Do is aiming for a further $30,000 to increase production values with better filming equipment and locations, practical effects instead of CGI, professional post-production work, and, most importantly, MORE BLOOD! As well as standard fare such as social media shout-outs, behind-the-scenes photos, downloads and Blu-rays of the completed film and production credits, perks for donation include participation in a live Q&A webcast with Do and her cast, a 20-minute Skype conversation with Do, and the opportunity to appear in the film as a “skeevy sex tourist” and quickly “getting a beat down by a burly Australian.”

Reading the fundraiser page, it’s apparent Do has a huge level of enthusiasm and passion for her work, as well as for the industry she herself is helping to take shape, and this, along with her evident sense of humour, will likely be seen in the finished product. Seriously, the woman managed to get the phrase “grilled chicken sphincters” into her pitch!

Comic News: SABRINA Getting New Horror Series

If you grew up in the 90s then there’s a good chance you watched SABRINA THE TENNAGE WITCH, starring Melissa Joan Hart as the titular teenage witch. You may have even watched the lesser spin-off animated series, or you may have just stuck with the ARCHIE comic series.

Capitalising on the success of AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE, it’s been announced that Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (MARVEL KNIGHTS, NIGHTCRAWLER, AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE) will be penning a new SABRINA series, one that’s far darker and grittier than any of its predecessors. Robert Hack will be bringing his pencilling skills to bring the series to life.

Though the series is in a horror vein, promising a Sabrina that hasn’t been seen before and adding to ARCHIE’s horror focussed output, there may very well be enough to keep old fans smiling. They can’t have Sabrina without Salem, right?

The series is set to launch in October.
