Movie News: Adam McKay Turns Down Marvel’s ANT-MAN

Yesterday brought word that ANCHORMAN’s Adam McKay was in advanced talks with Marvel Studios to take over from Edgar Wright on the ANT-MAN directing gig. So advanced were said talks, it was claimed that the studio had actually offered the director the job.

Today brings word from The Hollywood Reporter that McKay was indeed offered the job but he has actually turned it down. To add further to this, McKay himself took to Twitter to say, “And yes, met w/Marvel. Kirby & Lee r my Lennon Mccartney so it was awesome. But I have other projects I’m committed to. Not sure it can work.”

With McKay now seemingly ruled out, that still leaves a void to fill. Marvel and Disney’s other contenders for the job were said to be DODGEBALL’s Rawson Marshall Thurber and ZOMBIELAND’s Ruben Fleischer. Will they now be back in the frame? We guess we’ll have to wait and see what develops over the next few days.

Regardless of who directs, the cast of ANT-MAN currently comprises of Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, and unknown roles for Evangeline Lilly, Patrick Wilson and Corey Stoll. Set to kick-off Marvel’s Phase Three of films, ANT-MAN is currently set for a 17th July, 2015 release.

Movie News: Plot Details Emerge for WARCRAFT

With Duncan Jones’ WARCRAFT now in production, plot details have been kept relatively secret. Speaking to IGN, Ben Foster has revealed some story details and just who he’ll be playing.

The actor, likely best known to genre fans for playing Angel in X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, revealed that he’ll be playing the sorcerer Medivh, who uses his powers to fight the agents of the Burning Legion. He said, “Medivh came up in a time protecting an area, and the way he protected this area was through magic. As peace returned to this land he took a break. We meet him as his friends are returning asking for his help in a battle. What’s exciting about Duncan Jones’ take on this video game is that is shows both sides of the war. It’s not just a video game turned into a movie. It’s asking, hopefully, an important question of where do we limit our compassion for what we consider to be the bad guys?”

As well as Foster, Jones’ film will also feature Colin Farrell, Paula Patton, Paul Dano, Travis Fimmel, Anton Yelchin, and Toby Kebbell. At present, WARCRAFT is set for an 11th March, 2016 release.

Movie News: ZOMBIELAND Director to Helm GHOSTBUSTERS 3?

With Ivan Reitman recently revealing that he won’t be directing GHOSTBUSTERS 3, the hunt is on for somebody to direct this long-discussed threequel. Now The Wrap is reporting that ZOMBIELAND’s Ruben Fleischer is Sony’s prime target.

As reported over the last few days, Fleischer has also been linked to Marvel’s ANT-MAN. Whilst Marvel Studios and Disney are said to still be in talks with Fleischer, the feeling is that GHOSBUSTERS 3 is a more realistic fit for the director. Having just had a child, it’s suggested that he’s not too keen on leaving his family to go and work on ANT-MAN, which would require a near-immediate start. On the flip side of this, GHOSTBUSTERS 3 wouldn’t be ready to start shooting for a little while, plus he worked with Sony on both ZOMBIELAND and 30 MINUTES OR LESS.

Expect to hear more on GHOSTBUSTERS 3 and ANT-MAN as we get it.

Movie News: Marvel Ambushing Fox’s FANTASTIC FOUR?

With the cinematic rights for Daredevil having now reverted back to Marvel Studios, the company also attempted to get the Fantastic Four rights back from 20th Century Fox. Clearly that failed, with Fox now in production on Josh Trank’s THE FANTASTIC FOUR. As a result, it appears that Marvel are doing their best to take any shine off of Trank’s FF reboot.

BleedingCool is reporting that Marvel have actually made plans to put all FANTASTIC FOUR comic titles on hold, in the hope that fans will have minimal interest in the superhero family come Fox’s release. The characters will still appear in other comic book titles, just their own books are to take a sabbatical. And in the stories that they do appear in, they’ll be far from the focus of the stories. In some other related news, it’s also claimed that all Fantastic Four artwork has been removed from the Marvel offices.

This isn’t the first time that Marvel have done something like this, with them refusing to do any form of promotion for Fox’s X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. With the X-Men, though, they still ran their comic book titles. Either way, DAYS OF FUTURE PAST managed to become the highest grossing of all the X-MEN movies to date.

Movie News: Cameron Enlists Four Writers to Assist in Penning AVATAR Sequels

From innovative sci-fi filmmaker to over-funded has-been, James Cameron has had an interesting life in films. Whether you liked it or not, it’s near impossible to deny the success of 2009s AVATAR (it is the highest grossing film of all time, after all). While the plot was painfully cliché, the characters little better than cut-outs and the dialogue was just downright bad, the visual spectacle was quite breathtaking and, GRAVITY aside, remains the highpoint for 3D films.

Whether he’s making engaging and thoughtful action films or the overly sentimental TITANIC, Cameron’s worth ethic is never to be ridiculed. He’s been writing 1,500 pages worth of notes which will then be used by a four strong team of writers to pen the AVATAR sequels.

Cameron revealed during the LA Times’ Hero Complex Film Festival that he’d hired four writers, comprised of Josh Friedman (of TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES), Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (of DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES) and Shane Salerno (of ARMAGEDDON) to head up 3 more additions to the franchise. If nothing else the writing should be a cut above the predecessor. Maybe AVATAR’s problems stemmed from it being such a bull-headed affair on Cameron’s part. The future’s looking blue.

The second AVATAR film is expected for a December 2016 release, with December 2017 and 2018 thereafter.

TV News: NBC’s CONSTANTINE Airing Date Revealed

It seems to be a case of “so far, so good” for NBC’s CONSTANTINE in terms of making the right noises and looking the part. Still, we were still being kept in the dark in terms of when the show will air. Well now we know… for US audiences, at least. NBC has announced that CONSTANTINE will premiere on Friday, 24th October at 10pm EST. Here’s hoping the show finds a UK home sooner rather than later. We’ve also got a look at a new banner for the show…

The official word on the John Constantine-centric show reads:

Based on the wildly popular comic book series HELLBLAZER from DC Comics, seasoned demon hunter and master of the occult John Constantine (Matt Ryan, CRIMINAL MINDS) specialises in giving hell… hell. Armed with a ferocious knowledge of the dark arts and his wickedly naughty wit, he fights the good fight – or at least he did. With his soul already damned to hell, he’s decided to leave his do-gooder life behind, but when demons target Liv (Lucy Griffiths, TRUE BLOOD), the daughter of one of Constantine’s oldest friends, he’s reluctantly thrust back into the fray – and he’ll do whatever it takes to save her. Before long, it’s revealed that Liv’s ‘second sight’ – an ability to see the worlds behind our world and predict supernatural occurrences – is a threat to a mysterious new evil that’s rising in the shadows. Now it’s not just Liv who needs protection; the angels are starting to get worried too. So, together, Constantine and Liv must use her power and his skills to travel the country, find the demons that threaten our world and send them back where they belong. After that, who knows… maybe there’s hope for him and his soul after all.

With Neil Marshall directing and David S. Goyer executive producing, the show will also feature Harold Perrineau and Charles Halford. Now we just have to wait until the show finds a UK home.
