Movie News: WORLD WAR Z Sequel and INDEPENDENCE DAY 2 Get New Writers

Oscar-nominated Steven Knight is now attached to write the sequel (which we refuse to write as “World War Z 2” because it looks so dang awkward) to the Brad Pitt film, with Juan Antonio Bayona set to direct. Knight most recently wrote and directed the film LOCKE starring Tom Hardy.

In other “humanity overrun by things that aren’t humanity” news, Carter Blanchard has been drafted in to rewrite INDEPENDENCE DAY 2, which has already been rewritten by James Vanderbilt after an original script by returning director Roland Emmerich and co-writer Dean Devlin. Unfortunately, there will be no Will Smith in “ID4-2” (also dang awkward) welcoming us back to Earth.

Movie News: STARGATE Officially Being Rebooted

STARGATE may not be the most popular sci-fi franchise, and as THE SIMPSONS so aptly put it it’s the third best ‘star’ series, after WARS and TREK of course, but for many it deftly combined the adventure of Indiana Jones, Discovery channel style archaeology and engaging sci-fi. As both TREK and WARS have either been rebooted (or are in the process of), it’s little surprise that STARGATE is getting the same treatment. It’s a miracle J.J. Abrams isn’t involved.

There’s a planned trilogy of movies re-imagining the 20 year old franchise, though fans can sleep a little easier as original STARGATE director and producer duo of Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, who wrote the original motion picture, are behind the reboot.

Gary Barber, MGM Chairman/CEO has commented: ‘We couldn’t be more excited to once again partner with Roland and Dean, the world-class creators of the original STARGATE, to bring their reinvigorated vision of this wildly popular property to audiences of multiple generations. Stargate is one of the biggest titles in MGM’s vast library, and we look forward to adding this great franchise to our slate.’

While in a joint statement, Devlin and Emmerich said: ‘The STARGATE universe is one that we missed terribly, and we cannot wait to get going on imagining new adventures and situations for the trilogy. This story is very close to our hearts, and getting the chance to revisit this world is in many ways like a long lost child that has found its way back home.’

SG1 ended rather unsatisfactorily after an impressive ten year run, and following multiple spin-offs including ATLANTIS (2004-09) and UNIVERSE (2009-11) the new films may very well breathe fresh life into a franchise which grew stale after Richard Dean Anderson was replaced with FARSCAPE’s Ben Browder.

More on the reboot as it develops…

Movie News: Eva Green’s Boobs Cause SIN CITY Poster Ban!

The latest poster for Robert Rodriguez’s & Frank Miller’s SIN CITY sequel A DAME TO KILL FOR has been banned by the Motion Picture Association Of America (MPAA) for being a little too risqué. The poster, which features Green’s character Ava Lord, was banned specifically “for nudity — curve of under breast and dark nipple/areola circle visible through sheer gown.”

The MPAA obviously didn’t object to the gun she’s holding as that’s clearly less likely to corrupt vunerable young minds than a bit of cleavage.

Still, having studied it minute detail, we can’t see anything offensive.

So here’s the poster in question, which we’ve included purely so you can judge for yourselves and not for purposes of titillation or driving up hits to our website. Be warned though, it does include a picture of a woman which may disturb those of you with delicate sensibilities…

God knows what the MPAA will make of Eva Green’s character in the finished film. From what we’ve seen so far, this is one of her more conservative outfits!

SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR is out in the UK on August 29th.

Movie News: No Gunn for ANT-MAN

So just who will be directing ANT-MAN now that the original helmer, Edgar Wright, has left a large director-shaped void after backing off from the project? Well it certainly won’t be GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY director James Gunn despite the rumours. Gunn, via Twitter, stated categorically that he would not be Wright’s replacement. He even suggested that Marvel Studios had become nervous regarding Wright’s ambitious take on ANT-MAN.

Gunn has previously said that Wright and Marvel, “don’t have personalities that mesh in a comfortable way”.

Wright is believed to be returning to his KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER project, which supposedly has Johnny Depp attached to star.

Gunn’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY will be released August 1st and amazingly ANT-MAN is still scheduled for July 17th, 2015 despite being currently director less.

TV News: COMMUNITY to Be Uncancelled?

Even though COMMUNITY’s last-minute renewal has been an annual ritual since 2010, its cancellation on May 9th came as something of a shock to its legion of fans. However, according to an article on Deadline the doors of Greendale might yet reopen.

According to the report, talks are underway between COMMUNITY’s producer Sony and video streaming website Hulu to produce a further season of the show for online distribution. The talks are currently in the early stages with nothing yet set in stone, but both sides are optimistic about the mutual benefits of a potential deal.

Hulu already owns the digital rights to the show’s entire library of episodes, and so seems like a logical home for any further production. Also, a further season would put the show’s episode count past the 100 milestone, the tally usually preferred before a show goes into syndication.

The clarion call of #sixseasonsandamovie, an in-show reference initially applied to pseudo-comic book series THE CAPE (which, somewhat ironically, was cancelled after ten episodes for being completely crap) has become a mantra for fans’ belief in COMMUNITY’s potential longevity. Twitter becomes awash with the hashtag whenever the show is threatened with cancellation, and has been in evident more than ever during the last three weeks, showing the loyal and passionately vocal fanbase it possesses.

Movie News: Front-Runner Emerges to Direct ANT-MAN

After the surprising news of Edgar Wright’s Marvel Studios departure, it was claimed that the studio already had a new director to take over from Wright on ANT-MAN. Now comes word from Ain’t It Cool News of several names being looked at for the gig, with an apparent front-runner emerging.

Said to have been offered the ANT-MAN job is Adam McKay, who’s best known for the likes of STEP BROTHERS, THE OTHER GUYS, and the two ANCHORMAN movies. He, of course, worked with Paul Rudd, ANT-MAN’s Scott Lang, on the two ANCHORMAN films. The other names that were apparently under serious consideration were DODGEBALL and WE’RE THE MILLERS Rawson Marshall Thurber and ZOMBIELAND and GANGSTER SQUAD’s Ruben Fleischer. With all of these names having a comedy background, it’ll be interesting to see just what tone ANT-MAN takes. As it stands, though, McKay is said to have had an official offer from Marvel Studios, which it’s expected he’ll accept.

Still attached to star in ANT-MAN are Rudd as Lang, Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, and unknown roles for Evangeline Lilly, Patrick Wilson and Corey Stoll. Kicking off Marvel’s Phase Three of films, ANT-MAN is currently set for a 17th July, 2015 release.

Movie News: Marvel Studios Reportedly Cast Josh Brolin as Thanos

In some interesting news, it appears that Josh Brolin is to take on the role of Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Whilst not official at this stage, Latino Review is reporting that Brolin is going to voice the character in a third act scene in James Gunn’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. Brolin is likely best known for the likes of OLDBOY, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, W., GANGSTER SQUAD, JONAH HEX, PLANET TERROR, and THE GOONIES. The actor was also in advanced talks to play Batman at one stage, with that role ending up with one Ben Affleck.

The story claims that the Thanos will appear, complete with rocket throne, towards the end of GUARDIANS. The appearance won’t be long but it will be substantial enough that somebody needs to provide a voice for the Mad Titan. That’s where Brolin comes into the picture. With the studio seemingly wanting a “proper” actor to do the voice work with a view to clearly expanding the role for THE AVENGERS 3, it’s said that Brolin is Marvel’s man.

Latino Review are usually pretty spot-on with these stories, but treat this as rumour until Marvel drops some sort of confirmation. Given how Joss Whedon has stated just how important Thanos will be in the overall picture of Marvel’s Phase Three of films, culminating in THE AVENGERS 3, it makes sense that a major name will play the character that was briefly teased at the end of AVENGERS ASSEMBLE.

We guess we’ll have to wait until GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY’s 1st August release to find out for sure if there’s anything to this story.

Movie News: Director Reveals JURASSIC WORLD Plot Details

Despite recent speculation, there’s been no word from any of the powers that be on the exact plot of JURASSIC WORLD. Speaking to /Film, director Colin Trevorrow has been revealing some details on what we can expect to see.

The director said, “JURASSIC WORLD takes place in a fully functional park on Isla Nublar. It sees more than 20,000 visitors every day. You arrive by ferry from Costa Rica. It has elements of a biological preserve, a safari, a zoo, and a theme park. There is a luxury resort with hotels, restaurants, nightlife and a golf course. And there are dinosaurs. Real ones. You can get closer to them than you ever imagined possible. It’s the realisation of John Hammond’s dream, and I think you’ll want to go there.”

Staring that the film will take place 22 years after the first JURASSIC PARK, Trevorrow also revealed that the script came together based on the idea of modern technology and economic greed. “Our relationship with technology has become so woven into our daily lives,” he added. “We’ve become numb to the scientific miracles around us. We take so much for granted. What if, despite various disasters, they built a new biological preserve where you could see dinosaurs walk the earth? And what if people were already kind of over it? We imagined a teenager texting his girlfriend with his back to a T-Rex behind protective glass. For us, that image captured the way much of the audience feels about the movies themselves. ‘We’ve seen CG dinosaurs. What else you got?’ Next year, you’ll see our answer.”

Recent rumour claimed that we may see good and bad dinosaurs on the movie’s island. Apparently that topic is not quite so black and white. Trevorrow said, “There’s no such thing as good or bad dinosaurs. There are predators and prey. The T-Rex in JURASSIC PARK took human lives, and saved them. No one interpreted her as good or bad. This film is about our relationship with animals, how we react to the threat they pose to our dominance on earth as a species. We hunt them, we cage them in zoos, we admire them from afar and we try to assert control over them. Chris Pratt’s character is doing his behavioural research on the raptors. They aren’t trained, they can’t do tricks. He’s just trying to figure out the limits of the relationship between these highly intelligent creatures and human beings.”

Similarly, recent rumours also claimed that there will be a new species introduced in JURASSIC WORLD; a dinosaur who has its DNA spliced with other animals. On this topic, the director revealed, “There will be one new dinosaur created by the park’s geneticists. The gaps in her sequence were filled with DNA from other species, much like the genome in the first film was completed with frog DNA. This creation exists to fulfil a corporate mandate – they want something bigger, louder, with more teeth. And that’s what they get.”

So, with all of the above said, are you excited to visit JURASSIC WORLD upon its 12th June, 2015 opening?

Movie News: First TERMINATOR: GENESIS Set Pics Revealed

With shooting now underway on TERMINATOR: GENESIS, The Daily Mail has managed to get hold of some snaps from the film’s New Orleans set, showing Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese, Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor, Jason Clarke as John Connor, and Das Arnold as the apparently-aged T-800. Safe to say, Kyle Reese got buff.

The above pictures are said to be from a scene where Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese meet their adult son for the first time. Yep, there’s going to be plenty of time travel in this latest TERMINATOR movie…

As well as Arnold, Courtney and the two Clarkes, this first of a new trilogy of films will also feature J.K. Simmons, Dayo Okeniyi, Byung-hun Lee, Michael Gladis and Sandrine Holt.

To be directed by Alan Taylor, TERMINATOR: GENESIS is set for a 1st July, 2015 release.

Movie News: Paramount Reschedule Release Date for New FRIDAY THE 13TH Entry

Production companies often get fixated on cinema trends, many of which are cyclical. There’s few who’ll protest that 3D hasn’t outstayed its welcome, a gimmick that, at best, has two successful examples to its name. Another trend is found-footage. While the shaky-cam stylings are rooted in cinema, it was popularised by the shoestring budget of innovative mockumentary BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. Perhaps the worst trend is the continual (and let’s face it, inevitable) rebooting of old franchises.

The latest FRIDAY THE 13TH reboot won’t be a found-footage film. One out of three ain’t bad. The film, however, has been delayed by six months, and is now scheduled for a Friday 13th November 2015 release date as opposed to the original March slot.

David Brucker, of THE SIGNAL and V/H/S fame, is currently in talks to helm the splatter fest of a family saga. Whether or not it will be in any way connected to the recently announced TV series remains to be seen. Check in with STARBURST for more details as they surface.
