Gaming News: Difficult Choices Ahead in FALLOUT 4

Role-playing games are defined and described by the choices they offer players. Having evolved from playground imaginings, to book-based adventures, table-top and into a successful video-gaming industry, one thing has remained the same: choice. MASS EFFECT and FALLOUT, in particular, are notorious for offering players difficult choices. This is by no means a new trend in games, far from it.

Josh Sawyer, lead designer and project director on the love-it-or-loathe-it FALLOUT: NEW VEGAS, wants the follow-up to pose players with even more difficult decisions, harking back to the end of the original FALLOUT titles as well as New Vegas which were designed to get under the player’s skin, to challenge them and offer an unbridled gaming experience.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Sawyer said: ‘FALLOUT games are best when the choices are – and this applies to role-playing games in general, but FALLOUT is a more desperate world – more agonizing. They feel more appropriate to the post-apocalyptic genre. So I hope that whatever twists and turns the story takes, it’s more nuanced than a black-and-white choice.’

Bethesda Game Studios’ have been developing their latest project for over a year, and if rumours are to be believed the project in question is FALLOUT 4, which takes place, for a portion of the game at least, in and around Boston. Though unconfirmed, the evidence available makes for a compelling case.

Pete Hines, Bethesda marketing executive, has confirmed that the game will not be seen at E3.

As always, more details as and when they surface.

Movie News: New Poster + Images Released for Luc Besson’s LUCY

When Luc Besson gets it right, as in the case of THE FIFTH ELEMENT and LEON, he gets it spot on, but his work outside the director’s chair does let him down, penning interesting but ultimately witless action films like THE TRANSPORTER. When Besson’s behind the camera though, special things usually happen, generating deliciously hammy performances from his actors and often offering a moving story in the process. The most exciting thing about his work is the ability to take concepts, convoluted or sinister, and make them relatable and engaging.

LUCY, starring the indomitable Scarlett Johansson, looks to be one of his finest films to date. While the crux of the plot isn’t a genre original (brain potential has been widely explored again and again, most recently in 2012’s LIMITLESS), but we’ve never seen it from Besson’s point of view.

As you can see from the intriguing poster and the recently released stills, LUCY could be another NIKITA, or it could even be something altogether more thoughtful…

{starburst}http://youtu.be/MVt32qoyhi0{/starburst}

LUCY will hit UK cinemas on the August 22nd.

Indeed, we know nothing as yet, but we’ll darn well let you know as soon as we do. Keep ‘em peeled!

TV News: DAREDEVIL Cast!

It’s official, Netflix have found their Daredevil. Brit Charlie Cox, of slick gangster series Boardwalk Empire and fun fantasy romance Stardust, is set to don the horned cowl and super senses to take on New York’s hardest.

Charlie Cox

The casting, confirmed by Marvel Studios, is an interesting one, and Matt Murdock is a character that has been ignored on the big screen since Ben Affleck’s turn in the flawed but enjoyable eponymous 2003 film. News broke over the weekend that Daredevil’s original show runner, Drew Goddard, had stepped down, but he’s still writing the first two episodes of a planned 13, also filling in as executive producer and consultant. Steven S. DeKnight, a fellow Buffy/Angel acolyte, has taken over as showrunner.

Daredevil is the first of planned five series on digital streaming site Netflix, the others being Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage and The Defenders (which unites all of the characters). One of the greatest attributes of the Marvel Studios universe is the interconnectivity, so this looks sent to be interesting viewing at the very least.

Marvel has released a short official description for series: ‘Blinded as a young boy but imbued with extraordinary senses, Matt Murdock fights against injustice by day as a lawyer, and by night as the super hero Daredevil in modern day Hell’s Kitchen, New York City.’

Movie News: Edgar Wright Returning to the World of THE NIGHT STALKER?

So what’s next for Edgar Wright after his departure from Marvel’s ANT-MAN project? Well, according to Deadline, he may well be returning to his KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER project we last reported on in 2012, which will star filmland’s hardest working actor Johnny Depp. (Seriously Johnny, take a break. You’ve earned it.)

Often touted as the X-FILES’ predecessor, indeed its creator Chris Carter has often cited the show as a major influence, KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER started life as a couple of made-for-TV movies before being granted a series of its own. Starring Darren McGavin as tabloid reporter Carl Kolchak, this little gem of a 1970’s TV series died after only one season, despite having such genre powerhouse writers like Richard Matheson. But it soon gained cult status due to its irascible yet personable lead character and it’s quirky fusion of horror and sci-fi.

It was briefly resurrected back in 2005 with Stuart Townsend before disappearing into oblivion, but then it ignored much of what made the original series so enjoyable.

Hopefully Wright’s version will be respectful to its original source material, but it will no doubt retain the humour and quirkiness with Mr Depp in the mix.

More as it develops…

Movie News: Tarantino’s THE HATEFUL EIGHT Back On; Casting News

Earlier this year Quentin Tarantino well and truly spat his dummy over THE HATEFUL EIGHT. The cause of QT’s tantrum? That’d be that the script for his upcoming Western had leaked online, leading to The Chin deciding to shelve the movie altogether. Well, not only is the film back on, we have a shoot date and some casting news.

Revealed by Showbiz411, Tarantino has realised that he acted a tad erratically and has pencilled in the film to start shooting in Wyoming this November. Given that he hated the idea of the script being out there in the World Wide Web, the writer/director is apparently making a few changes to his initial script. That said, the film is still set to focus around a group of coach passengers stranded in the middle of nowhere.

In terms of cast, a lot of the names rumoured a few months ago are said to be officially on board. The names that are known at this point are Bruce Dern, Michael Madsen, James Remar, Tim Roth, Amber Tamblyn, Zoe Bell, Samuel L. Jackson, and Kurt Russell. What’s even cooler is that Jackson and Russell are set to play a pair of bounty hunters. After those rumours of Christoph Waltz being a part of the Western, it appears that he’s currently out.

Expect more on THE HATEFUL EIGHT as it becomes available.

Movie News: INSURGENT Begins Production

DIVERGENT proved that the young adult audience is never to be underestimated, and more often than not they can’t be fobbed off with junk food viewing. Instead it offered an intelligent and thoughtful romp that dealt with the pains of being teenaged, not fitting in and change. It juggled the right amount of dystopian sci-fi elements with the real to present something familiar yet engaging, fitting right into the HUNGER GAMES groove.

The follow-up, INSURGENT, based on the 2012 novel of the same name by Veronica Roth, is already in production. Octavia Spencer will be joining the returning cast, which also includes Shailene Woodley, Theo James and Kate Winslet.

Robert Schwentke (RED and R.I.P.D. director) is making his series debut, directing a screenplay written by Brian Duffield and Akiva Goldsman.

Lionsgate, alongside confirming production, have released the following synopsis for the film: ‘INSURGENT raises the stakes for Tris as she searches for allies and answers in the dystopian ruins of a futuristic Chicago. Tris (Woodley) and Four (James) are now fugitives on the run, hunted by Jeanine (Winslet), the leader of the power-hungry Erudite elite. Racing against time, they must find out what Tris’s family sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders will do anything to stop them. Haunted by her past choices but desperate to protect the ones she loves, Tris, with Four at her side, faces one impossible challenge after another as they unlock the truth about the past and ultimately the future of their world.’

INSURGENT is expected for a March 2015 release.

Movie News: “Original” Cast Members Returning for X-MEN: APOCALYPSE

With X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST currently doing impressive numbers at the box office, the belief was that X-MEN: APOCALYPSE would focus purely on the younger cast introduced in X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, such as Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult. Apparently not.

Speaking to The Daily Beast, writer Simon Kinberg said, “It will focus primarily on the FIRST CLASS cast, but it will certainly have some of the original cast involved, too.”

So some of the original X-series cast will be returning? Just who, that remains to be seen. Given the non-aging nature of the character and that he’s the poster boy of the franchise, it seems a given that Hugh Jackman will return for an eight outing as Wolverine. Also, in recent months, Patrick Stewart has talked about how he’d like to return if possible. Plus, does this mean that time travel may be incorporated into APOCALYPSE then?

Either way, X-MEN: APOCALYPSE is currently set for a 27th May, 2016 release.
