Gaming News: Early Screenshots of SPACE HULK: DEATHWING Revealed

After keeping their cards close to their chest for so long (save for one glorious teaser) Focus Home Interactive have finally revealed images of their upcoming SPACE HULK: DEATHWING first-person-shooter.

Depicting the Dark Angels chapter and Tyranid Genestealers in action, these promotional shots depict surprisingly spacy areas for the two sides to combat one another. The environments themselves resemble a suitably dark mixture of gothic and industrial elements as found in many previous titles. If nothing else, it at least indicates that the developers are aware of the atmosphere and style of the universe.

Set to use the Unreal 4 Engine, the game is a major breakaway from the traditional turn based format the series has followed up to now. Other significant changes which have been announced are the potential presence of cultists and a gradual progression system within the game, and these screenshots have only revealed further interesting details.

The fourth image (below) released by the company features a background terminator carrying a plasma cannon, a heavy weapon never previously carried by such squads. What’s more is that the Librarian leading the group bears the stylised “I” of the Inquisition about the midsection of his armour. Perhaps this is some important hint which suggests the Ordos’ involvement in the plot of the game.

Expect more on this as further information is revealed.

Movie News: Gareth Edwards To Helm STAR WARS Spin-off

Gareth Edwards

Gareth Edwards, fresh from the massive hit but critically lukewarm-received GODZILLA, has been attached to direct one of the standalone STAR WARS spin-off films which will follow Episode VII.

Gary Whitta (THE BOOK OF ELI) will script the as-yet unknown film. Rumours that the film will focus on Boba Fett, Yoda or Han Solo have yet to be confirmed.

Despite its massive box office draw, GODZILLA has failed to please many fans, but let’s hope Edwards can weave some of the MONSTERS magic on the STAR WARS universe.

The film has been scheduled for release on December 16th, 2016. More news when we have it.

Movie News: Cuarón on for SHINING Prequel THE OVERLOOK HOTEL?

Alfonso Cuarón, director of HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN and GRAVITY, is reportedly in talks to direct THE OVERLOOK HOTEL, Warner Bros’ planned prequel to THE SHINING we brought you news of last year. This marks the second appearance by the acclaimed filmmaker in the news this week, with Cuarón also linked with the upcoming Harry Potter spin-off, FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM.

Though it’s been over 12 months since THE OVERLOOK HOTEL was first announced (with ex-WALKING DEAD showrunner Glen Mazzara penning the screenplay), little has progressed in terms of casting or story details, but with Cuarón in talks, it looks like we’ll be hearing more on the project very soon. Stay tuned…

Movie News: Edgar Wright Quits ANT-MAN

Now this is a bit of a shocker. After developing the film for best part of a decade, director Edgar Wright has quit Marvel Studios’ ANT-MAN just prior to the start of production.

A joint statement from Wright and Marvel has stated that the director’s departure is due to “differences in their vision of the film,” and that the cast, including Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas, remains in place, as does the film’s release date of July 2015.

Wright’s departure is a huge shock. He’s been working with Marvel Studios to develop the film since 2006 – prior to the release of IRON MAN. Indeed, studio head Kevin Feige has previously gone on record as stating the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been partly shaped around Wright’s vision for ANT-MAN.

No replacement has been announced, although Marvel say they’ve already found a new director for the project. Considering the film’s release date is just over a year away it seems likely though that the new director will have little time to make substantial changes to Wright’s script (which he developed alongside Joe Cornish) so it’s likely that at least some of Wright’s vision will end up in the screen.

Wright’s departure is a huge shame. Besides being one of our favourite directors, Ant-Man, which is due to kick off Marvel’s Phase Three, looked set to be the studio’s most anticipated and interesting film since AVENGERS ASSEMBLE.

And if it’s not too early, we’d just like to put this out there – since Wright’s now available, he’d be a much better director for the next STAR TREK than Roberto Orci.

TV News: Eli Roth Journeying SOUTH OF HELL

Eli Roth is infamous for helping popularise the tacky torture porn subgenre, which took the video nasty, sanitised it and took it over-ground to massive mainstream appeal. Away from CABIN FEVER and the HOSTEL films, Roth now appears to be making TV his new home with last year’s splendidly over the top HEMLOCK GROVE (season 2 of which starts in July) and, according to Variety, he will also produce and direct the pilot for supernatural series SOUTH OF HELL.

Matt Lambert, of DEXTER, will write the pilot for WE TV, a digital cable channel. Jason Blum will be producing under the Blumhouse TV banner, while James Manors Jr, also of DEXTER, will be the showrunner.

The plot, while simple enough, sounds promising, or at the very least worth a watch: ‘Set in Savannah, Georgia, the series focuses on Maria Abascal, a demon hunter whose power stems from within.’

As always, more details as the surface. In the meantime, we also have Eli Roth’s THE GREEN INFERNO to look forward to, the trailer of which can be seen HERE.

Movie News: X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Compared to a Disaster Movie

With X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST now out and receiving generally strong reviews (you can find ours here), Simon Kinberg has been talking about the scale and scope of the film’s already-confirmed sequel, X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. Kinberg is the man responsible for writing both of these X-films.

Speaking to IGN about the film’s titular Apocalypse character, Kinberg said, “The thing that we’ve spent the most time talking about is not just the visual execution of the character, which is its own challenge, but creating a character that’s the most powerful I think of any mutant villain that we’ve seen in the X-MEN movies so far. More powerful that Magneto.”

He added, “We’ve also been talking about how to give him a real emotional and philosophical underpinning. So he’s not just somebody who’s out there destroying the world because he can. What he’s doing is – in his mind – justified and validated by a real compelling, coherent philosophy. He tries to convert people – maybe some of our most familiar characters – to come to his cause.”

On the movie’s scale, Kinberg confirmed that it may unravel like a disaster movie. “We’re talking about it like a disaster movie, extinction level event,” he said.Sort of Roland Emmerich-style moviemaking, which you’ve never seen in any X-MEN movie, or any superhero movie, which I think is exciting.”

Emmerich, of course, has helmed such large scale movies as INDEPENDENCE DAY, 1998’s GODZILLA, THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW, WHITE HOUSE DOWN, and 2012. As for Kinberg’s mention of Apocalypse potentially converting some familiar faces, the character has his Horseman of the Apocalypse that carry out his bidding. Over the years, the likes of Wolverine, Angel, Gambit, Banshee, and even the Hulk, have carried out Apocalypse’s bidding. With Channing Tatum confirmed to be playing Remy LaBeau, aka Gambit, in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, we wouldn’t be against him being one of Apocalypse’s Horsemen.

To be directed by Bryan Singer, X-MEN: APOCALYPSE is currently set for a 27th May, 2016 release.

Movie News: Speculation on Edgar Wright’s ANT-MAN Departure

One of the biggest news stories of this last week was the recent departure of Edgar Wright from Marvel Studios’ ANT-MAN. Whilst it was deemed an amicable parting of the ways, it was simply stated that the two parties had different visions for the movie. Treat this as purely rumour for now, but Latino Review claims to have some inside details on just what differences Marvel and Wright had.

Two particular rumours doing the rounds are that Edgar Wright was actually fired and that he had rubbed Marvel up the wrong way by being massively behind schedule and for the project haemorrhaging money. Those two rumours are said to most definitely be false. It appears that the big issue is some of the recent rewrites of the script that have taken place.

A few months ago now, Marvel and Disney’s higher-ups apparently gave Wright and co-writer Joe Cornish some notes on what they’d like included in the movie, such as the core tale of the film and nods to certain Marvel characters. Wright and Cornish then did two further drafts of the script to address Marvel’s suggestions, and this was said to also still keep the writers’ vision of the movie intact. Then, just over a month ago, Marvel apparently handed the script over to two writers, including one in-house Marvel writer, to make some further tweaks. It was only when Wright was greeted by a script that had undone the majority of his work that he decided to leave the project.

In terms of actually leaving the project, some stories say that the decision was actually made back in March whilst others say that the decision was made during a meeting of the two parties on Friday. The main problem, which you’d expect if the above is true, is that both Wright and Cornish were upset by the sudden lack of faith shown in them by Marvel Studios and Disney.

Whereas Wright and Cornish were able to leave the project, the movie’s cast are all tied to ANT-MAN. Where this goes from here, we don’t know, although it’s said that Marvel already has a director in place. They’re keeping quiet on that for now, but expect more on this as it develops.

TV News: Drew Goddard Departs DAREDEVIL

If Edgar Wright departing ANT-MAN earlier this week came a little out of the blue, now comes word from Latino Review that Drew Goddard has stepped away from Marvel’s Netflix-exclusive DAREDEVIL. Goddard was initially attached to write and direct the pilot episode then act as showrunner and executive producer for the series.

It’s suggested that Marvel and Disney already have their Edgar Wright replacement lined up, although they’re keeping schtum on that one for now. That’s not the case with DAREDEVIL, for SPARTACUS creator Stephen S. DeKnight has already been announced to work as DAREDEVIL’s showrunner and as an executive producer. Goddard will also still serve as an executive producer, and he put the script in place for the first two episodes of the 13-episode series.

There was some brief speculation that Goddard may have left DAREDEVIL to actually take over from Wright on ANT-MAN, but it appears that he left the Matt Murdock gig in order to focus on Sony’s THE SINISTER SIX movie.

Whilst DAREDEVIL is now in the hunt for a new director for its pilot, Marvel is also developing Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage shows for Netflix, with the four separate shows culminating in a Defenders miniseries.

Expect more on this as it develops.
