Huge Names Rumoured to be Joining STAR WARS ANDOR and OBI-WAN KENOBI….

Kenobi-Andor-Rumours

Bless the maker! Since the saber was passed over to the house of mouse, Star Wars has far expanded just the main episodic saga. That said, despite Disney becoming an Empire themselves in charge of this successful (if sometimes controversial) new generation of Star Wars, the innovator himself George Lucas has not been entirely absent from it, corresponding with filmmakers on Rogue One and The Mandalorian for instance, but if rumours are to be believed, George just might have been caught in a tractor beam and be heading back to his creation.

Floated some time back last year and since being called a myth by some, George Lucas is still being rumoured to be returning behind the scenes, as he is supposedly penning some episodes for the much anticipated Andor series, landing on Disney+ in 2022. Adding some fuel to these flames is the fact that insidethemagic.net is reporting it to be the case, and in fact Lucas is listed as a writer on the Andor series production credits on IMDB. Obviously firm confirmations have yet to be made but much like a returning Jedi master hacking his way through Dark Troopers, we would certainly welcome the Godfather of Star Wars back with open arms.

Speaking of returns though, the rumours do not end there, as Ewan McGregor – who is all set for his long-awaited return in Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi – is also being rumoured to play a big part in the Andor show. And according to The Illuminerdi, it will be a recurring and sizeable role on the series, with speculation being that Obi-Wan Kenobi will help to connect the universes depicted in these shows and be an aid of sorts to the budding Rebellion. We await further details but if all this is in fact true, the Andor series is becoming more star-studded than a Max Rebo Band concert at Jabba’s Palace.

And as we mention all this speculation, lets actually get a little confirmation in, as Game of Thrones star Indira Varma has officially being announced as joining the cast for Obi-Wan Kenobi. Details on her part obviously remain tightly under wraps but as we approach the series’ 2022 release, we’ll undoubtedly get a clearer picture of her character. But what we know right now is that she is a very interesting piece of casting and will join McGregor and Hayden Christensen (back as Darth Vader) in the series.

What an increasingly exciting time to be a Star Wars fan.

New Movie Added to Paramount’s STAR TREK Slate

trek

Kalinda Vazquez, co-executive producer of Fear the Walking Dead, is teaming with JJ Abram’s Bad Robot to pen an original Trek movie script for Paramount.

No word yet on the story or if any existing Trek-lore characters will feature, but Vazquez is well-credentialed having recently written a Trek Short featuring Captain Pike, as well as an episode of Discovery set in the mirror universe.

If the script gets the green light it would make Vazquez the first woman in history to write a feature-length Trek film. Paramount has a number of other Trek-franchise properties in development, although widely reported projects from Quentin Tarantino and Noah Hawley have cooled in recent months.

Sci-fi Horror FILE NOT FOUND is Crowdfunding

file found

Actor and filmmaker Lindsay Bennett-Thompson – whose shorts Puppy and Enter Nirvana did well on the festival circuit – has launched her fourth short film File Not Found on Kickstarter.

The sci-fi horror film’s synopsis is:

Set in 2035, Jenny lives an idyllic life with her spiritualistic partner Maggie. When modern technology is disrupted, Jenny comes face to face with the horror that she has been hiding from.

Writer/Director Lindsay Bennett-Thompson said, “I wanted to make something which married modern technology and classic horror. Our contemporary society relies so heavily on technology I wanted to push the boundaries of how that can shape our perception of reality. How far will we go to escape or influence the way we experience the world and is our reliance on contemporary science hiding us from truth? I was inspired by the works of Charlie Brooker and his representation of a dystopian future – which never feels too far removed from our own – and the more traditional psychological horror of Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook, representing an inescapable yet illogical consuming force. Both characters in the story are trying to escape reality in their own way but some demons will always be waiting.

The short is being produced by STARBURST’s James L. Perkins and is currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter. You can find out more about Lindsay by heading over to www.lindsaybennett.net.

Hugh Grant to be D&D Movie Villain

Hugh Grant

Hugh Grant has been the latest name attached to the Dungeons and Dragons movie. The actor became a household name thanks to his roles in romantic comedies but is now better known for over-the-top roles such as the villain in Paddington 2.

The project has a very interesting cast so far. Bridgerton star Rege-Jean Page, Resident Evil icon Michelle Rodriguez, Star Trek’s Chris Pine and Detective Pikachu’s Justice Smith. Fans have speculated that this may well be an ‘adventuring party’, the traditional story format for a game of Dungeons and Dragons. This means one character will be a some sort of rogue, another a wizard, someone will have healing powers and so on.

Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley have been attached to direct. Their credits include Game Night and Spider Man: Homecoming.  The movie is expected to come out in May 2022. A persistent rumour is that the plot will revolve around a heist for a legendary artifact, the gruesome Eye of Vecna, a powerful relic that was once part of a god of death.

Paramount will be working with eOne, the company that handles this sort of thing for toy and game manufacturer Hasbro, the current owners of Dungeons and Dragons. Wizards of the Coast, the company responsible for D&D was recently elevated to the position of a division within Hasbro. The game’s popularity has lead to record profits and Wizards are now responsible for the companies digital products.

The feature has been in development for a very long time and they have been multiple attempts to bring the vast and complicated world of Dungeons and Dragons to the silver screen since the 80s. It’s creator, Gary Gygax, famously failed to get a movie made and the least said about 2000’s low budget fantasy movie of the same name the better.

The tabletop game has enjoyed a huge revival in recent years thanks to shows such as Critical RoleQuesting Time and High Rollers, as well as the game’s Fifth Edition, which is a far more accessible and inclusive rules-set. One of the challenges any Dungeons and Dragons movie will face is exactly which story to tell. The game has been around since 1974 and has accrued a whole library’s worth of lore and stories. Add to this the fact that the game itself is all about making up your own adventures and it becomes quite clear why it’s taken so long to develop a script that can be truly described as Dungeons and Dragons.

Time will tell if this new movie will take the fantasy franchise into a bold new direction or if we will finally get to see other world’s from D&D vast catalogue of stories, including Ravenloft and Dragonlance

Cine-Excess Announce Distinctive Visions Event

The Stylist

Ahead of the launch of the Cine-Excess streaming service, there is Distinctive Visions, a 3-day online event set to showcase some of the best new voices in genre cinema.

The headline event on the Saturday will be a screening of The Stylist, with a Q&A with the director Jill Gevargizian. The Soska Sisters will host a selection of Q&As with directors too. Talking about their inclusion, they said: “We are so excited to talk with these visionary auteur filmmakers about their art. Their work is revolutionary and in these ever evolving times it’s important to have these powerful voices leading us into the future of cinema. Cine-Excess has been brilliant finding diverse, unique talent and bringing them to eager audiences. We are honored to be part of bringing these incredible artists to even greater audiences. This is going to be a stellar weekend not to be missed.

A special discussion session with film critic Alexandra Heller-Nicholas will cover her latest book 1000 Women in Horror: 1895-2018, as well as talking diversity in cinema with Cine-Excess’ Natasha Marburger and Xavier Mendik.

The list of films currently in the line-up are as follows:

THE STYLIST (Jill Gevargizian, 2020). We all dream of being someone else… but for Claire (Najarra Townsend, Contracted), that dream goes from an obsession to a living nightmare. Hairstylist by day, serial killer and collector of scalps by night, Claire’s lonely existence is thrown into turmoil when her regular client, Olivia (Brea Grant, After Midnight; director of 12 HOUR SHIFT), asks her to style her hair for her wedding day. Increasingly fixated on Olivia’s seemingly flawless life, Claire vows to lock up her scalp collection and change her ways for good—only to discover that repressing your deadly desires is easier said than done…

FORNACIS (Aurelia Mengin, 2018) A sensory, hypnotic road movie that evokes the experimental imagery of Jean Rollin’s 1970s vampire cinema and tells of the dramatic romance between two women, Anya and Frida. Obsessed by the death of her betrothed, Anya is thrown into a world of confusion, in which memories mix dangerously with reality, causing an oscillation between the solitude of reality and the surrealism of thwarted desires.

BLACK LAKE (K / XI, 2020) Fusing regional myth with horror movie traditions to tell the story of Aarya, a young female artist who is gifted a red scarf, sent by her aunt from her recent travels to Pakistan. As a result, she is haunted by a Churail: a demonic and malevolent South-Asian Witch and is forced to face the devastating cycles of violence the Churail brings with her.

LEAKAGE (Suzan Iravanian, 2018) Jale, a middle-aged woman discovers that crude oil is leaking out of her body. This unusual yet empowering phenomenon awakens the hope of a better future in her. On the other hand, it triggers uncertainty and paranoia in the male figures that surround her.

TRANS (Naeri Do, 2020) – UK Premiere. A girl who dreams of becoming transhuman by transmitting electrical shocks to her brain. After facing a serious assault, she plans revenge on the boys that have bullied her for having an eating disorder. To take vengeance she conducts an electrical baptism and falls into trans – a state where one can become transhuman from high voltage electric shocks.

RED PILL (Tonya Pinkins, 2021) UK Premiere. Six progressives, one deadly weekend! Set during the 2020 run-up to the presidential election, Tonya Pinkins film offers an unsettling expose of racism within contemporary America. The film takes place on Halloween weekend of the 2020 election and focusses on six old friends who go campaigning in red country, armed with only humour and naiveté. When they meet an immovable force, their plans are thwarted and the fight to win an election becomes a fight for their lives.

IN THE LIGHT OF THE NIGHT (Misha L Kreuz, 2020) UK Premiere. Updating horror cinema’s mythologies around the werewolf figure whilst also providing some pointed reflections on Germany and its past traumas. It tells the story of a young woman named Minthe, an outsider who becomes the unwitting victim of a gang of criminals who have made a pact with a mysterious cave creature.

Tickets are £9.99 for all three days, which will give you access to all the films at any time during the weekend (except The Stylist) plus the discussions. The event is available to UK, over 18 audiences only. Head over to www.cine-excess.co.uk to book tickets and find out more.

THE TERMINATOR is Back! New Series Announced…

terminator

Like Skynet’s vicious murder-bots themselves, The Terminator franchise refuses to die, no matter how much audiences and critics retaliate. Despite the presence of returning creator James Cameron, neither group cared for 2019’s Terminator: Dark Fate, despite it being the strongest entry since Judgement Day 28-years prior. Recent rumblings bring news not of another movie, but a TV series continuation, and rather than repeat the uneven live-action route paved by The Sarah Connor Chronicles in 2008-2009, the world of The Terminator will instead be expanded via animation, courtesy of Netflix.

We can’t wait for fans to experience this amazing new chapter in the epic battle between machines and humans,” teased John Derderian, the streaming service’s vice president of anime. With animated projects such as Ghost in the Shell, B: The Beginning, and Eden of the East in their back catalogue, Production I.G. is the studio handling the animation, whereas writer Mattson Tomlin will step in as showrunner. Tomlin’s handywork can be seen in the recent Netflix Original movie Project Power, and Halloween 2022 in a little movie called The Batman. Tomlin promised The Terminator series “breaks conventions, subverts expectations and has real guts.” We’ll hold him to that!

With film sets critically handicapped by COVID-19 for the past year and changed irrevocably for many years going forward, we predict that we’ll see a huge increase in high profile animated projects heading our way in the future. Indeed, we’re already seeing that come into effect if the last few months are anything to go by, with Tomb Raider, Army of the Dead, Splinter Cell, and Skull Island just a few of the major animated series announced so far.

He’ll be back, but will you, the audience? Let us know over on our social channels!

Halle Berry Boards THE MOTHERSHIP

Halle Berry has signed up as executive producer and star of The Mothership a joint venture by Netflix and MRC Film. Bridge of Spiesscreenwriter Matthew Charman has written the script and this will be his first opportunity to direct a feature film.

The film will see Halle Berry’s Sara Morse desperately in search of her missing husband when the discovery of an extraterrestrial object under their farmhouse home adds a new dimension to his mysterious vanishing.

In the meantime, fans of Berry have two more genre-based films to look forward to. Netflix has recently bought the rights to her directorial debut, the martial arts drama Bruised, and she also stars in the upcoming science fiction film Moonfall directed by Roland Emmerich, who back in 1996 put a huge mothership of his own at the centre of the action in Independence Day.

Stephen’s King THE JAUNT to be adapted into series

Stephen King's short story The Jaunt cover

Fear the Walking Dead co-creator Dave Erickson is turning Stephen King’s The Jaunt into a television series for MRC Television.

Based on the 1981 short story which King originally published in The Twilight Zone Magazine, The Jaunt explores a future where teleportation, called ‘jaunting’, has become a commonplace technology and has allowed humans to colonise the solar system. The key is that travellers must be under complete anaesthesia while jaunting, lest they become mad or die. It’s theorised that while jaunting seems almost instantaneous, to a conscious mind it lasts an eternity. Time stands still and a traveller loses their mind.

Erickson will adapt The Jaunt as part of a multi-year contract with MRC. MRC Television President Elise Henderson writes that “we’ve long admired Dave’s visionary creative work… a true master of his craft, he’s the ideal partner to build upon the work of Stephen King, and create and develop more originals as the studio continues to expand.”

PET SEMATARY Prequel Film Announced

Pet Sematary 2019 film children in masks

Described by Stephen King himself as his most frightening book, Pet Sematary tells the story of Louis Creed, a doctor who moves with his young family to a small town in Maine. Their new neighbour, Jud Crandall, shows them the local pet cemetery (misspelled on the sign as ‘sematary’) where the town’s children bury their dead pets. When the family’s cat is later run over, Jud shows Louis the sacred burial ground beyond the cemetery, where what’s buried comes back a little crooked.

The novel has been adapted twice, once in 1989 with a script written by King himself, and a second time in 2019. This latter version is now getting a prequel on ViacomCBS’s Paramount Plus, with screenwriter Jeff Buhler returning. At the time of Pet Sematary’s film release in 2019, Buhler had said that “we had discussions about possible follow-up films, and for the most part, everybody feels like we’ve told the story of the Creeds. So a lot of the ideas that we’ve been batting around currently, recently, have all been about… digging into the mythology of the town, these rituals that children present, the mythology of the Mi’kmaq, the Wendigo, the cemetery, the origins, Jud’s life.”

No word yet on casting or a potential release date, so stay tuned!
