J.R. Ramirez Joins MARVEL’S JESSICA JONES

While Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones is getting set to return to the small screen in merely a matter of weeks in Marvel’s The Defenders, the second season of Jessica’s solo series has brought in another new addition.

As announced by Marvel, J.R. Ramirez has joined the show in the role of Oscar. Ramirez will be familiar to genre fans for playing “Wildcat” Ted Grant in The CW’s Arrow. As for Oscar, he’s a character described as “a devoted single father who moves into Jessica’s building as the new superintendent. While his young son becomes enamored with Jessica and her powers, Oscar keeps his distance, worrying about the trouble that follows people like her.”

On this news, showrunner Melissa Rosenberg said, “J.R. is an incredible addition to our cast, bringing complex and subtle emotion and humor. He exudes warmth, edge and intelligence, and blends perfectly with our tone.”

As well as Ramirez, the other new additions for Season 2 of Marvel’s Jessica Jones so far are Janet McTeer and Leah Gibson.

Up next for Jessica, though, is teaming with Charlie Cox’s Daredevil, Mike Colter’s Luke Cage and Finn Jones’ Iron Fist in Marvel’s The Defenders, which lands on Netflix on August 18th.

SIMPSONS MOVIE Sequel in “Earliest Stages” of Development

With it now a decade since The Simpsons Movie hit the big screen, we’re finally getting word that a sequel is in the earliest of early development.

This news comes courtesy of the original film’s director David Silverman, with him explaining to EW that a follow-up is in “the very earliest stages.” Silverman went on to elaborate, “I certainly am cautious about a couple things. I wouldn’t want it to be risky in terms of budget, and I would not want it to be anything that we did purely for the money. I would want it to be a really great movie. I personally feel no need for another one unless it’s great.”

He continued, “I’d love for there to be another one. We’re still a ways away from it. We talk about this and that. We’re thinking it over, but nothing’s happening just yet.”

The Simpsons Movie proved to be a favourite of many a fan and critic, and it pulled home a strong $527 million at the global box office.

As ever, expect more on this if and when it continues to develop further. Given how long it took for us to finally get the first Simpsons film, it may well be just a little while longer before a sequel arrives.

Lost DOCTOR WHO Classic SHADA to be BBC Worldwide’s Next Animation Project

News has emerged that following 2016’s animation of the missing 1966 Doctor Who story The Power of the Daleks, BBC Worldwide’s next animated project will be the legendary lost Tom Baker story Shada.

As fans will know, Shada was set to be the final story in the Fourth Doctor’s sixth season in early 1980, but was abandoned partway through recording due to strike action in the TV studio. With only the exteriors and one of three studio sessions completed, the story was only around 50% finished, and a number of attempts to remount the final studio sessions failed.

One of the reasons Shada is still held in such high regard is that it was then-script editor Douglas Adams’ final work on the series. As a six-part story, it would also have been his longest Doctor Who serial.

Shada has since appeared on VHS and DVD in an incomplete version, and as a novel, an audiobook, an online animation (with the Doctor recast as Paul McGann), and in an unofficial animated version from Ian Levine, completing the story utilising animated segments and voice recordings from most of the extant cast but – significantly – a voice artist’s impression of Tom Baker rather than an appearance from the actor himself. Levine’s version was offered to BBC Worldwide some years ago but declined.

All that could be about to change, with BBC Worldwide set to release their latest version this November.

According to actor Daniel Hill’s Spotlight account, he is credited with an appearance in “Doctor Who – Shada” for “television”, under the joint directorship of Pennant Roberts (the serial’s original television director) and Charles Norton – the director in charge of Worldwide’s Power of the Daleks project. The reference to “television” might be an indication of another North American TV broadcast for the serial.

Indeed, Hill himself tweeted on June 27th of this year: “fantastic time recording for SHADA 2017”, following this up on July 3rd with “v exciting ready in November apparently”. Hill was, of course, cast as the character Chris Parsons in the original production.

All of which pretty much confirms this as the follow-up to The Power of the Daleks. And although fans of the missing 1960s episodes will no doubt be disappointed at the news, the audio track for this new version will effectively comprise brand new “old” Doctor Who, whereas the soundtrack recordings for the missing black and white serials have already been released often several times over. With Tom Baker’s involvement an almost certainty since he’s finally become one of the “Big Finish Doctors”, the key question that now remains is, will this be a full animation of the entire story (perhaps the most likely option if a broadcast is indeed the intention), or a part animation of only the missing segments? Time, as they say, will tell.

Eli Roth and AMC Team for HISTORY OF HORROR

In some potentially brilliant news, AMC and Eli Roth are teaming up for a new horror series.

As announced by the network at the Television Critics Association tour, a show dubbed AMC Visionaries: Eli Roth’s History of Horror is currently in development. The current plan is for the series to be a six-part look at the horror genre.

On this news, Cabin Fever, Hostel, and The Green Inferno director Roth said, “I am thrilled to be part of this incredible series. For years, I’ve wanted to create a definitive ‘History of Horror,’ a living record of the genre with interviews from all the greats, old and new. Sadly, we lose more of these masters every year and with them go their stories and experiences. This show will serve as a record for future generations – fans and filmmakers alike – to enjoy. I could not be prouder to create this with AMC.”

Eli Roth’s History of Horror will premiere at some point in 2018. Similarly, the network is also working on AMC Visionaries: James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction and Robert Kirkman’s History of Comics.

The Arthur C. Clarke Award Goes to THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD

Pulitzer Prize winning book The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead has won the Arthur C. Clarke Award for Best Science Fiction Novel. The much-lauded book follows the fate of Cora, a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. Cora’s journey takes her across history and reality, and the book is more a meditation on history and humanity than anything else.

The winner received a prize of £2017 and the award itself, a commemorative engraved bookend.

Andrew M Butler, Chair of Judges, said, “I’m delighted the judges chose Colson Whitehead’s intensely moving The Underground Railroad. It’s a gripping account both of humanity’s inhumanity and the potential for resistance, underpinned by science fiction’s ability to make metaphor literal.”

The complete shortlist was:

A Closed and Common Orbit, Becky Chambers

Ninefox Gambit, Yoon Ha Lee

After Atlas, Emma Newman

Occupy Me, Tricia Sullivan

Central Station, Lavie Tidhar

The Underground Railroad, Colson Whitehead

Award Director Tom Hunter added, “2017 marks Sir Arthur C. Clarke’s centenary year, and The Underground Railroad is a much-deserved winner, a tribute to Sir Arthur’s original intent that the award be as inclusive as possible in defining its genre, and a book that demonstrates science fiction’s uncanny ability to be both of the moment and an enduringly powerful message for futures to come.”

His story is a tragic one, but the film is highly entertaining and the filmmaker a brilliant storyteller. His new book based on the documentary will be available to purchase and have signed!

MARVEL’S NEW WARRIORS Adds Keith David

As Marvel’s New Warriors continues to put its cast together, the series has moved to add Keith David to its ranks.

Marvel Entertainment and Freeform have announced the news, with the They Live actor to play a “caustic municipal employee” by the name of Ernest Vigman. The character will have a personality clash with the young titular team due to the groups’ “hopeful energy”.

David joins a cast that currently features Milana Vayntrub as Squirrel Girl, Derek Theler as Mister Immortal, Jeremy Tardy as Night Thrasher, Calum Worthy as Speedball, Matthew Moy as Microbe, and Kate Comer as Debrii.

The early synopsis for Marvel’s New Warriors reads:

Marvel’s New Warriors is about six young people with powers living and working together. With powers and abilities on the opposite end of the spectrum of The Avengers, the New Warriors want to make a difference in the world… Even if the world isn’t ready. Not quite super, not yet heroes, Marvel’s New Warriors is about that time in your life when you first enter adulthood and feel like you can do everything and nothing at once — except in this world, bad guys can be as terrifying as bad dates.

At present, the plan is for New Warriors to be made up of ten half-hour episodes that will arrive at some point next year.

Support CITY OF LOST SOULS #5 on Kickstarter

There is still some time to contribute to the Kickstarter to fund issue #5 of City of Lost Souls, an indie horror comic featuring a dead serial killer haunted by the ghosts of his twelve victims, who is tasked by a soul collector to locate the titular settlement, which may be entirely fictional.

Penned by implausibly prolific and possibly disturbed comics writer James McCulloch and illustrated with equal darkness by Janine van Moosel, the series is bleak and gripping, and we have been greatly enjoying it so far, having previously reviewed issues #2, #3 and #4.

Campaign rewards include previous issues of the series available both physically and digitally, which can be collected as single issues or bundles, and also available is the likes of art prints and tshirts. As the campaign has already reached its target a stretch goal has now been set, and should it be reached all backers will receive the spoils of a one-off print run of the single-issue Karyn Shade: Beyond Forth, McCulloch’s brilliant tale (drawn by the supremely talented Jessica Byrne) featuring its eponymous snarky investigator searching for missing children in the purgatorial wasteland of South Lanarkshire with determination and badassery. Set in the same universe as City of Lost Souls, it was initially published in three parts in anthology title Comichaus.

Check out the City of Lost Souls campaign here.
