Chiwetel Ejiofor in Talks to Play THE LION KING’s Scar

With production on Jon Favreau’s live-action take on The Lion King currently underway, it looks as if the redo is close to landing its Scar.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, Chiwetel Ejiofor is currently in talks to voice the ‘big bad’ of the movie – a role played by Jeremy Irons in the original 1994 animated effort. Ejiofor is no stranger to genre fans, with him having played Mordo opposite Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme in last year’s Doctor Strange. In addition to that, Ejiofor also wowed many as he received an Oscar nomination for his turn in 12 Years a Slave. Scar, of course, is the nefarious villain who betrays his brother Mufasa so that he can become the king of the animal kingdom himself.

Already on board for this new take on The Lion King are Donald Glover as Simba, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, and roles for the likes of Seth Rogen, John Oliver, and Billy Eichner.

At present, The Lion King is booked in for a July 19th, 2019 release.

DIVERGENT TV Series Finds a Home at STARZ

We heard a little while ago that the Divergent movie franchise was to be recalibrated as a TV series, and now it appears that the show has found itself a home.

As per Vulture.com, the Starz network has picked up the series that will turn the fourth installment in the franchise – Ascendant – into a small screen adventure. Last year saw it revealed that a TV movie of the fourth installment would be the launching pad for a spinoff TV series, and that seems to still be the case.

Details are scare at this stage, and it’s not known who, if any, of the film franchise’s cast will reprise their roles for at least the TV movie. That said, star Shailene Woodley has already been vocal about having no interest in this small screen project.

As ever, expect more on all of this as we get it.

John Cena Joins the BUMBLEBEE Spinoff

We’re all expecting to see an explosive smackdown take place when the Bumblebee spinoff arrives on the big screen next year, but now the picture has added a literal SmackDown element to its ranks in the form on John Cena.

As per Paramount Pictures, sixteen-time WWE Champion Cena is now officially on board to fight the good fight and adjust a few attitudes. Away from the squared-circle, Cena has featured in the likes of The Marine, 12 Rounds, Legendary, Trainwreck, Sisters, Daddy’s Home, and a whole host of fun animated WWE efforts such as Scooby Doo! WrestleMania Mystery and The Flintstones & WWE: Stone Age Smackdown.

Super Cena joins a cast that currently includes Hailee Steinfeld, Pamela Aldon, Kenneth Choi, Stephen Schneider, Jorge Lendebrog Jr., Jason Drucker, Ricardo Hoyos, Abby Quinn, Rachel Crow, and Grace Dzienny.

To be directed by Kubo and the Two Strings’ Travis Knight, the early synopsis for Bumblebee reads:

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beack town. Charlie (Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.

Principal photography is currently underway on Bumblebee, with the production to take place purely in California ahead of a December 21st, 2018 release. Interestingly, that date sees the film open against Aquaman.

THE FLASH Finds its Elongated Man

We heard last month that the upcoming fourth season of The CW’s The Flash was set to add Ralph Dibny, aka Elongated Man, to its ranks, and now comes news on who’ll be playing this famed DC comic book character.

As per The CW and DC Entertainment, Saving the Human Race’s Hartley Sawyer has landed the Dibny gig. For the eagle-eyed of you out there, you’ll remember that Dibny was actually namedropped way back in The Flash’s first season, when he was listed as one of the fourteen people who died as a result of the particle accelerator explosion.

In terms of powers, Elongated Man is able to stretch his body to any shape or form. Additionally, Ralph Dibny is also a hugely skilled private investigator whose detective skills are almost at the level of a certain Dark Knight. In The Flash, he’ll use his abilities to help out Team Flash.

Sawyer joins the already-announced newcomers of Machete’s Danny Trejo as Earth-19 bounty hunter Breacher, Dominion’s Kim Engelbrecht as the badass Mechanic, and The 100’s Neil Sandilands as the ‘big bad’ of the season, Clifford Devoe, aka The Thinker.

The Flash’s premieres its fourth season on October 10th in the US, with a UK airing expected to follow shortly after that date.

Kathy Bates Not Returning for AMERICAN HORROR STORY: CULT

In some disappointing news, it’s been confirmed that Kathy Bates will not be returning at all for the upcoming seventh season of FX’s American Horror Story.

Since appearing in the show’s third season – Coven – genre favourite Bates has gone on to become a mainstay of AHS. With that said, though, The Hollywood Reporter now has word that the hugely talented actress won’t be a part of American Horror Story: Cult due to scheduling conflicts with Netflix’s Disjointed.

So far, we do know that Cult will feature Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Frances Conroy, Billy Eichner, Cheyenne Jackson, Billie Lourd, Colton Haynes, Alison Pill, Lena Dunham, Adina Porter, Mare Winningham, and Leslie Grossman.

American Horror Story: Cult will debut in the US on September 5th, with a UK premiere set for September 8th.

AMC Developing New Genre Shows with Rainn Wilson and Chris Hardwick

With genre TV currently enjoying a huge boom, AMC is developing a new sci-fi series with Rainn Wilson and a dark anthology series with Chris Hardwick.

As announced by the network at the recent TCA tour, Wilson – best known to genre fans for the likes of House of 1000 Corpses, the US version of The Office, Juno, Monsters vs Aliens, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Super, Cooties, and the upcoming Star Trek: Discovery and Meg – will be working with AMC for what’s currently dubbed Untitled Rainn Wilson Project. The new series is described as “a one-hour scripted series that follows an alien entity which takes over the body of a poly-addicted, middle-aged man living in the San Fernando Valley.”

For Chris Hardwick, he’s now the host of AMC’s The Talking Dead post-Walking Dead chat show, and he actually featured alongside Wilson in House of 1000 Corpses. Where Hardwick’s new series is concerned, that will be titled Underbelly and is set to delve into the darker elements of pop culture. The early word on the show has it pegged as: “This anthology explores storylines related to the fan experience, celebrity, greed, alienation, obsession, and vanity.”

On this news, AMC’s Charlie Collier said, “We are at our best when we bet on and support exceptional talent; and this diverse development slate, from exceptional creators with distinct points of view, includes multiple projects from longstanding and successful AMC partners. Our deep pipeline of projects embodies our eclectic by design, quality programming approach and our scripts-to-series development model that puts the emphasis on the most important part of our strategy – outstanding writing, a commitment to worlds you’ve never seen on TV before, and rich character development.”

Expect more on both of these projects as they continue to develop.
