Fede Alvarez Will Do a New EVIL DEAD…

Evil Dead

Love it or hate it, there’s no escaping the World Cup right now. Taking place in Russia, the football feast is dominating tele boxes across the globe. Now while some of you may not be all that fussed about the pel droed, maybe you should start paying attention – especially if you’re an Evil Dead fan.

Following the cancellation of Ash vs. Evil Dead, star Bruce Campbell has stated how he’s now completely retiring from the Ashley J Williams gig. While that’s some sad news if Campbell does indeed stick to that, there is some slight rumblings that there may eventually be a sequel to Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead reboot. And in a world of largely forgettable or outright awful remakes, reboots, and reimaginings, Alvarez’s Evil Dead was actually pretty darn good.

Where does the World Cup come in to all of this, you ask? Well, that’s because Uruguayan Alvarez has now stated that he will indeed do another Evil Dead movie… on one condition.

If you’re not up on your football, Uruguay are many savvy fans’ outsides bets to life the famed World Cup trophy. They’re maybe not quite in the same ballpark as Brazil, Germany, and Spain when it comes to outright favourites, but they’ve certainly got plenty of admirers. With a solid backline marshalled by Atletico Madrid’s duo of Diego Godin and Jose Giminez, and an attacking presence that features Paris Saint-Germain’s Edison Cavani and Barcelona’s bitey Luis Suarez, the Uruguayans could well have a sneaky chance of going all the way in Russia. Granted, it took a last minute goal to dispatch of lowly Egypt, but this is a team that will get better as the tournament progresses – and expect to see them start to kick on in their upcoming games against Saudi Arabia and Russia.

Right, so that’s this particular writer’s excuse to write about football for once, and we guess all of this depends on whether you were actually fans of Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead in the first place. If you ask us, a follow-up to that film could well be something special if handled in the right way.

Oh, and yes, your humble scribe has actually popped a cheeky fiver on Uruguay to win the World Cup – so here’s hoping for the most-welcome double-whammy of an increased bank balance and a new Evil Dead picture in the future.

LUCIFER Gets Picked Up by Netflix

Lucifer

Our brand spanking new issue hit shelves only this past Friday, and in said marvellous piece of genre reading we wrote about how FOX made the slightly surprising call to cancel Lucifer after three seasons. Well, fans of the Tom Ellis-starrer can rejoice, for the series has now been picked up by Netflix.

It was a couple of weeks ago that word first came out that Lucifer was to be canned, with that part of the double-whammy news that The Exorcist was also getting scrapped. While we absolutely adored The Exorcist, that news didn’t come as a major surprise as, quite frankly, the ratings for the show were pretty darn awful. Where Lucifer was concerned though, the series had maintained relatively strong viewing numbers throughout its third year; making the news of its cancellation a little bit of a strange one.

At the time of that initial news, there was plenty of fan demand for the series to be picked up elsewhere, and now comes word that Netflix has picked up the show for a fourth season. The fact that online petitions surfaced as #SaveLucifer became the top trend on Twitter for a spell shows that there was still a whole lot of interest in Lucifer, and here’s hoping those fans can now rest easy in the knowledge that Lucifer Morningstar and Co. will be returning to the small screen – presumably later in the year.

Inspired by the Karel Čapek novel of the same name,  this classic sci-fi tale about exploitation and greed moves the action from the 1930s to post-Brexit Britain. Čapek’s insight is still relevant to this day, so we can only imagine turning the story into an immersive theatre experience will make it even easier to absorb.

Alien Abduction as a metaphor for something else is a pretty common sci-fi trope. Expect some history of alien abduction stories, some latex masks and some flying saucers in this award winning drama about the strange and mundane.

With fantasy novels (and their spin-off media) now being mainstream, an improv show that riffs on the various tropes that make those stories work is inevitable. Hivemind  wear the crown of fantasy improv, go see if you can.

Big Update on Several DCEU Properties

Batman Flash DCEU

Holy DCEU update, Batman! Yes, as the headline suggests, there’s some pretty major updates on several of Warners Brothers’ upcoming DC projects.

With Heat Vision having recently delved in to the DC Extended Universe, we now have some new details on a whole host of your favourite DC heroes and villains. So, let’s get to it.

It was only this very week that we again heard stories of director Matt Reeves looking to replace Ben Affleck in the cape ‘n’ cowl for The Batman, and now we’re hearing that Reeves’ freshly-handed-in screenplay does indeed have the film showcasing a younger Caped Crusader. Given how Affleck’s Dark Knight is a grizzled, beaten-down hero with decades of protecting Gotham City under his belt, that seems to again point in the direction of Affleck handing over the Batsuit to A.N. Other.

From the World’s Greatest Detective, to his longtime nemesis. While Jared Leto’s Joker is still at play in the DCEU, elsewhere we now know that Joaquin Phoenix will be playing the Clown Prince of Crime in Todd Phillips’ other Joker movie that takes place outside of the DCEU. For that picture, we’re hearing that a $55 million budget is the current plan; making it far, far smaller than your average comic book movie in that regard. The film will be part of a new banner of DC Comics-driven movies from Warners, with DC Dark and DC Black just two such titles mooted for this banner. These films will have a more adult-orientated skew to them, so we can expect something in line with Logan, Deadpool, or Punisher: War Zone in terms of language and violence.

Arguably the most key DC-based movie on the horizon right now is the solo outing for Ezra Miller’s Flash. Previously, we’d seen how the Scarlet Speedster’s solo effort was to be titled Flashpoint, but that’s now been changed up once more. Seemingly back to being titled simply The Flash, the film will still pull its inspiration from Geoff Johns’ iconic Flashpoint comic book arc, though. That comic arc saw Barry Allen travel back in time to save his mother, which in turn caused all kinds of changes to the present-day timeline; Bruce Wayne died that night in Crime Alley; Thomas Wayne became an alcoholic, aggressive Batman; Martha Wayne became the Joker; Oliver Queen was an arms dealer in the same vein as certain incarnations of Tony Stark; Captain Cold was the protector of Central City; Wonder Woman’s Amazons and Aquaman’s Atlanteans were at brutal, bloody war; Kal-El was found by the government upon crash-landing on Earth, thus spending his entire life locked up and used as a test subject; and Cyborg was the planet’s leading hero. And let’s face it, you know the shit’s hit the fan when Cyborg is your brightest shining hope! The endgame of Flashpoint, however, saw Barry create a brand new timeline that became known as The New 52. That was basically DC Comics’ way of refreshing their comic book titles and making some significant changes to certain characters. Point being, if Warner Brothers wanted to make some major changes to their DC Extended Universe – such as a new direction for Batman – then the upcoming Flash movie is the perfect excuse to do just that. At this point, The Flash is being described as a time-travelling comedy of sorts that will have a Back to the Future vibe to it. The plan is to start shooting the film early next year, with Game Night’s John Francis Day and Jonathan Goldstein directing.

Up next for the DCEU, of course, is James Wan’s Aquaman, which swims to the silver screen this December.

Arrow Video FrightFest Reveals 2018 Artwork

FrightFest 2018

The poster design for the 2018 Arrow Video FrightFest has been unveiled. In keeping with previous years, it’s the work of the legendary Graham Humphreys, whose artwork has graced film posters, video cases, books and albums for years.

Fittingly, the new design pays homage to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein… or the Modern Prometheus, which is 200 years old this year. Graham explained the importance and relevance of the idea:

In the same way that Frankenstein gave life to his monster, horror films stimulate our imagination and give form to ideas that otherwise dare not leave the shadows”, he commented. “The painting shows our familiar host enjoying a fresh jolt…as do we – the audience – each year at FrightFest. In the background, a new entity emerges through the doorway… a new sponsor… Arrow Video!

See if you can spot a few other classic references in there too!

Arrow Video FrightFest takes place at Cineworld Leicester Square and The Prince Charles Cinema, London between Thursday, August 23rd and Monday, August 27th. Tickets and line-up details will be announced soon.

MTV Developing Live-Action AEON FLUX Series

Aeon Flux

In some news that’s sure to pique the interest of many a genre fan, MTV is now developing a new live-action Aeon Flux TV series.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, Teen Wolf’s Jeff Davis has been brought in to serve as showrunner, and he’ll also write and executive produce alongside The Walking Dead’s Gale Anne Hurd. Back in 2005, Hurd actually produced the Charlize Theron-starring Aeon Flux movie.

For those not familiar with Aeon Flux, the original series first aired on MTV back in 1991. Back then, it was a batch of shorts put together by animator Peter Chung. More shorts followed in 1992, and then 1995 saw a ten-episode animated series impress many. The aforementioned film would arrive in 2005, although that would ultimately be a box office dud; bringing home just $52 million from a budget of $65 million.

The basic premise of Aeon Flux sees the action playout in a dystopian future, with the focus being on a young assassin who teams up with a team of biohacking rebels in a desperate attempt to save humanity itself.

Expect more on this new Aeon Flux effort as we get it.

Drawlab Unleashes WITLESS WIZARDS

witless wizards

Greek games company Drawlab Entertainment has launched a Kickstarter for their latest game Witless Wizards! It’s a fast and silly game of master mages trying to claim superiority over the mystical arts by grabbing as many arcane items as possible to defeat their enemies.

The game itself is a highspeed mix of popular card games such as Biblios and Smash-Up.  Mix up different themed decks to create mystical chaos, and then compete quickly to get to the top. This is a short ‘appetiser’ game, suitable for those looking to brighten their lunch break or who simply like playing rapid games.

This isn’t the first time Drawlab has meddled with the affairs of wizards; their previous games Spells of Doom and Witless Wizards both have something of a cult following.
