Love it or hate it, there’s no escaping the World Cup right now. Taking place in Russia, the football feast is dominating tele boxes across the globe. Now while some of you may not be all that fussed about the pel droed, maybe you should start paying attention – especially if you’re an Evil Dead fan.

Following the cancellation of Ash vs. Evil Dead, star Bruce Campbell has stated how he’s now completely retiring from the Ashley J Williams gig. While that’s some sad news if Campbell does indeed stick to that, there is some slight rumblings that there may eventually be a sequel to Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead reboot. And in a world of largely forgettable or outright awful remakes, reboots, and reimaginings, Alvarez’s Evil Dead was actually pretty darn good.

Where does the World Cup come in to all of this, you ask? Well, that’s because Uruguayan Alvarez has now stated that he will indeed do another Evil Dead movie… on one condition.

If you’re not up on your football, Uruguay are many savvy fans’ outsides bets to life the famed World Cup trophy. They’re maybe not quite in the same ballpark as Brazil, Germany, and Spain when it comes to outright favourites, but they’ve certainly got plenty of admirers. With a solid backline marshalled by Atletico Madrid’s duo of Diego Godin and Jose Giminez, and an attacking presence that features Paris Saint-Germain’s Edison Cavani and Barcelona’s bitey Luis Suarez, the Uruguayans could well have a sneaky chance of going all the way in Russia. Granted, it took a last minute goal to dispatch of lowly Egypt, but this is a team that will get better as the tournament progresses – and expect to see them start to kick on in their upcoming games against Saudi Arabia and Russia.

Right, so that’s this particular writer’s excuse to write about football for once, and we guess all of this depends on whether you were actually fans of Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead in the first place. If you ask us, a follow-up to that film could well be something special if handled in the right way.

Oh, and yes, your humble scribe has actually popped a cheeky fiver on Uruguay to win the World Cup – so here’s hoping for the most-welcome double-whammy of an increased bank balance and a new Evil Dead picture in the future.
