Movie News: Could DREDD 2 be Crowd Funded?

Karl Urban is a staple of sci-fi and fantasy TV and film, from THE LORD OF THE RINGS to breathing new life into Bones in J.J. Abrams’ STAR TREK reboot, and now the actor has called his fans to arms. Fan-funding is commonplace, with big names getting involved, deciding to cut out all the middle man and, frankly, the bullshit. Urban has asked fans to launch a Kickstarter for a sequel to 2012s thunderous DREDD.

The ALMOST HUMAN actor couldn’t confirm a sequel to Pete Travis’ heart-pounding comic book adaptation but, speaking at Moto City Comic Con, Urban said he was optimistic about a follow-up, asking attendees to use Kickstarter to give the ruthless judge a leg-up.

While DREDD didn’t set the box office alight, it was a hit with the fans, securing cult status on the home video circuit. Would you pledge to see a sequel?

Movie News: GODZILLA Sequel Confirmed

Though its box office has been as monstrously large as Big G himself (just shy of $200m thankyouverymuch), there was a general feeling that a sequel wasn’t exactly a sure fire thing due to a sizeable percentage of its audience downright hating on it. Sure, money talks and bullshit walks, but when that same sizeable percentage of the audience avoids GODZILLA 2 like they would a sequel to KIETH LEMON: THE MOVIE, then the studio has a very real problem on their hands.

Well, Legendary Pictures & Warner Bros have flicked the V’s up to the film’s legion of detractors, and have quickly announced that a sequel is indeed happened. Obviously there’s little in the way of detail at this point, but GODZILLA director Gareth Edwards has long made it no secret that, if asked, he’d like to continue playing in this universe. In fact, when pressed in the past, he’s hinted that he’d like to explore the concept of Monster Island, which opens up some very intriguing possibilities. Hopefully the screenplay for GODZILLA 2 will address some of the larger flaws of the first… Perhaps have at least one interesting character this time around? Just a thought.

Movie News: Oscar-Winning Director in Talks to Helm Harry Potter Spin-Off, FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM

Excited for the upcoming Harry Potter spin-off, FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM? If it wasn’t enough that the screenplay would be handled by J.K. Rowling herself, prepare to have your expectations raised even further, with the news that Alfonso Cuarón is reported to be in talks to direct. Cuarón recently blew everybody away with the award-winning GRAVITY, but is arguably even more celebrated amongst Potter fans for directing THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN, hands-down the most visually accomplished of the eight in the series. Obviously we’re only at rumour stage at present, but we’ll be keeping our fingers crossed that this pans out. Stay tuned…

The first in the FANTASTIC BEASTS trilogy will open November 18th, 2016.

Movie News: Rob Zombie Teases New Movie, 31

With a new HALLOWEEN movie currently being developed, many fans have been wondering whether Rob Zombie will return to direct The Shape’s next outing. Whilst he won’t be directing Michael’s return, he does have another movie in the works; one which also seems to focus on Halloween.

Taking to his official website, Zombie released a teaser of sorts for his next effort, a horror called 31. That title refers to 31st October, as in Halloween night. Despite this link, it’s said that this movie is definitely not going to be tied to the Michael Myers-starring HALLOWEEN series. It does, however, appear to feature a rather freaky looking clown. The below video is only a brief tease for 31, but it does act as a pretty great catch-up on Zombie’s previous films, plus it’s always good to see THE HAUNTED WORLD OF EL SUPERBEASTO get some love.

{starburst}http://youtu.be/CJtSjrSu6FI{/starburst}

It seems that signing up to Zombie’s official mailing list will keep you in the loop with this next horror from the director. In a recent e-mail, Zombie described 31 as being “for the hardcore fans who want it nasty and brutal.” For anyone who’s seen any of Zombie’s previous work, it’s pretty safe to say that the director doesn’t deliver his movies in any other way.

Whilst we wait for further details on Zombie’s next film, here’s a teaser poster that’s also been released:

As ever, expect more on this as it develops.

TV News: THE OMEN Getting TV Treatment with DAMIEN

With Norman Bates and Hannibal Lecter having both recently had successful transitions to the small screen, not to mention ROSEMARY’S BABY and FRIDAY THE 13TH currently being developed for TV, now comes word that THE OMEN is the next horror property to be adapted for television audiences.

Courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter, it’s been revealed that former THE WALKING DEAD showrunner, Glen Mazzara, is developing a show simply called DAMIEN. The series will act as a sequel of sorts to 1976’s THE OMEN, telling the tale of Damien Thorn, now an adult, as he has to deal with his past and, more importantly, embracing his future as the Antichrist.

Mazzara will write DAMIEN’s script, with him also serving as an executive producer through his 44 Strong Productions company. The show has apparently already been sold to Fox Television Studios.

Directed by Richard Donner, THE OMEN starred Gregory Peck and Lee Remick as the adopted parents of Damien, originally played by Harvey Spencer Stephens. Of course, the child is revealed to be pure evil by the movie’s end. THE OMEN would go on to spawn three sequels and a reboot.

Expect more on this latest horror-classic-turned-TV-series as it develops.

Movie News: New Plot Rumours on JURASSIC WORLD

Whilst Colin Trevorrow’s JURASSIC WORLD has been regularly adding numbers to its cast lately, the film’s plot details are still a little hazy. Now comes a report from JoBlo that claims to know what’s set to go down in Trevorrow’s movie. It goes without saying, but treat this as merely rumour for now.

Central to the plot of JURASSIC WORLD will be a theme park containing lots of dinosaurs. Also included in the park, as ever, is a lab featuring some meddling scientist types. The order of the day for these scientists? That’s apparently splicing dinosaur DNA with various other species. It’s one of said hybrids that ends up terrorising the park, leading to some dinosaur versus dinosaur mash-ups.

Whereas there will be a crazed dinosaur on the rampage, there will also be ‘good guy’ dinosaurs trained by Chris Pratt’s character. It’s said that Pratt’s allies will include Raptors and a T-Rex, whilst the ‘big bad’ will apparently have various abilities at its disposal, such as the camouflage ability of a cuttlefish, the flexible jaw of a snake, the intelligence of a Velociraptor, and the frenzied menace of a T-Rex. It’s also presumed that there will be some murky humans, such as Vincent D’Onofrio, involved.

As well as starring Platt, the movie will also feature Bryce Dallas Howard, Ty Simpkins, Jake Johnson, Judy Greer, Omar Sy, B.D. Wong, Katie McGrath, Lauren Lapkus, Irrfan Khan and D’Onofrio.

Trevorrow’s JURASSIC WORLD is currently set for a 12th June, 2015 release.

Gaming News: DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS Prepares to Conquer the World

Gaming company Wizards of the Coast have announced that the latest edition of their flagship game Dungeons and Dragons will launch with a Starter Set this July. The game will contain rules from the D&D Next rule-set, which is the result of two-year public playtest that included over 175,000 participants. There will be no character creation rules in the Starter Set; gamers will have to wait for the The Players Handbook to come out in August. Other rules supplements and adventures to come out in the autumn.

This announcement also coincides with Konami’s launch of two new Dungeons and Dragons themed slot machines. The machines will include glowing runes, faux stone design elements, hand painted 3D dragon toppers and the usual sort of glitz and glamour that you expect from slot machines.

In related news, there is a strong indication that Wizards of The Coast’s parent company, Hasbro, are planning to produce a 3D printer, capable of producing “hobby models” suitable for D&D. The toy manufacturing giant have registered the trademark “All Spark”, which is a clear reference to their popular Transformers line of toys.

According to information provided by Hasbro’s Global Director of IP and Enforcement Paul N. Vanasse, the trademark is for “computer software for creating, designing, modifying, customizing, sharing and saving computer generated representations capable of being printed by a three-dimensional printer to create physical objects, namely, jewelry, ornaments, art objects, artifacts, household goods, toys, games, hobby models, accessories, office products, and various other consumer products.”

This product could change the entire toy market, or it could simply be a very complex toy for rich children. Once we know more, we’ll let you all know.

Movie News: Help Fund Unique STAR WARS Documentary ELSTREE 1976

  Elstree 1976

With all the excitement about the new STAR WARS movies, filmmaker Jon Spira has made a documentary, ELSTREE 1976, focusing on those unsung people whose lives the film changed: those who were under the masks and costumes. But he needs your help to get it finished. Launching the funding on Kickstarter, he aims to raise £30,000, and is well over half way there already.

The film will include interviews with the actors whose small – often only one second or so on screen – who have attained a cult status among the loyal STAR WARS fanbase. We’ve all seen them at conventions and events, signing autographs and sharing their recollections. Now they will have a chance to have their side of the greatest space saga ever committed to film.

Spira’s previous documentary, the fabulous ANYONE CAN PLAY GUITAR was a well-received look at the some great British indie/rock bands, so this looks like it will be something special.
From the Kickstarter blurb…

In 1976, during the hottest summer on record, Star Wars was shot in suburban North London. Nobody involved had any idea how big the film would become, many couldn’t even remember the title.

Yet, for the extras and actors in smaller roles, their faces hidden in masks and helmets, this seemingly insignificant job would go on to colour their lives even four decades later.

ELSTREE 1976 is a portrait of a cross-section of these people; from the man inside the most iconic villain in film history to the guy whose character was completely cut from the final film. It tells the stories of their lives and explores the eccentric community they have formed, travelling the world, signing autographs for fans.

Check out the pitch video:

You can support the film from as little as £3, with a download of the film for £10 by visiting the Kickstarter page.
