Movie News: New Images of MAN OF STEEL Sequel’s Batmobile

This last week saw Zack Snyder reveal his MAN OF STEEL sequel’s Batman and Batmobile. On the back of that, two more photos have surfaced, from Blue Realm Studios and Dualshockers, of the Dark Knight’s famed ride. The first image is a cast of the vehicle’s chassis, whilst the second picture gives a look at something that definitely has a resemblance to the Batmobile from Tim Burton’s films, not to mention a far more stylish and traditional look than Christian Bale’s Tumbler.

As well as Ben Affleck as Batman, the still untitled MAN OF STEEL sequel will also feature Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ray Fisher as Victor Stone/Cyborg, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, and unknown roles for Holly Hunter, Callan Mulvey and Tao Okamoto.

Snyder’s Batman/Superman mash-up is currently set for a 6th May, 2016 release, seeing it going head-to-head with CAPTAIN AMERICA 3.

Movie News: “No Plans For” KICK-ASS 3

Despite previously being talked up as a trilogy by all involved, plus having plenty of material to pull on, it appears that the KICK-ASS movie series isn’t moving forward any time soon. That’s the word coming from star Aaron Taylor-Johnson, at least.

Whilst promoting GODZILLA to Flicks and the City, the actor was asked about whether KICK-ASS 3 was being planned. He responded, “I’m not contracted to do KICK-ASS 3. I wasn’t contracted to do number two either. I can’t rule it out, but there are no plans for it.”

The first KICK-ASS was a breath of fresh air, taking just shy of $100 million from a $30 budget back in 2010. That film would also go on to do extremely well on home release. As for last year’s KICK-ASS 2, it divided opinion amongst many and that was shown at the box office, taking $60 million for a budget in the same region of the $30 million given to its predecessor. By all accounts, that was a disappointment to the powers that be, as KICK-ASS 2 was projected to take a whole lot more during its cinema run.

Whether Universal Pictures end up returning to the KICK-ASS series at some point down the line remains to be seen. Given how Taylor-Johnson has the Quicksilver gig in the MCU to go alongside huge movies like GODZILLA, he may not be in any particular rush to return as Dave Lizewski. Of course, there’s always the possibility of a Hit-Girl spin-off, but then that has its own problems in terms of battling against the aging of Chloe Grace Moretz.

TV News: Returning Character Confirmed for ARROW’s Season 3; Early Plot Details

With the Season 2 finale of ARROW set to air this coming week in the UK, our US cousins have already been treated to what was a truly fantastic climax to a great season of television. On that note, though, this news story does contain some spoilers in relation to ARROW’s Season 2 finale (a review of which can be found here).

SPOILERS AHEAD

After returning in the last few weeks, it’s now been confirmed that John Barrowman’s Malcolm Merlyn will be bumped up to a full series regular for the already-confirmed Season 3 of the show. As well as this, The CW has also released the first description for the next season of ARROW.

The official deets read:

“After a violent shipwreck, billionaire playboy Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) was missing and presumed dead for five years before being discovered alive on a remote island in the Pacific. He returned home to Starling City, bent on righting the wrongs of his family and fighting injustice. To do this, he creates the person of the Arrow and allies himself with former military man John Diggle (David Ramsey), computer-science expert Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards), street brawler Roy Harper (Colton Haynes) and international assassin Sara Lance (Caity Lotz), while keeping his secret from those closest to him including his sister Thea (Willa Holland), who has allied herself with his most deadly enemy. Rivalries and allegiances will shift as Oliver faces his most difficult challenge yet.”

Whilst there’s nothing majorly ground-breaking in the above synopsis, as suggested in Season 2’s finale, it appears that Thea will indeed be joining daddy dearest in going up against Oliver.

Book News: MCM Exhibitor Doctor Geof Picks Up Readers’ Choice Award

Doctor Geof Wins Reader's Choice Award

Doctor Geof is making sure 2014 is the year of Steampunk after picking up the award for Best Steampunk Periodical for his Steampunk Literary Review.

Now in its third year, the Readers Choice Awards are organised by the Steampunk Chronicle, a worldwide platform which celebrates the best of art, music, literature and design in this increasingly popular genre.

Over the course of ten years, Doctor Geof has built an extensive repertoire of Steampunk artwork, becoming a leading figure of the genre and the UK’s foremost Steampunk artist known for his unique series of posters, portraits, embroidered badges and comics. Most recently his work was incorporated into the Longitude Punk’d exhibition at the Royal Greenwich Observatory and later this summer he will be hosting solo exhibition in the Cutty Sark.

Award Winning Steampunk Literary Review

Also known as Dr Geof Banyard, his work explores the fictional possibilities of science and history often bordering on the ridiculous as work like the Steampunk Literary Review shows. Doctor Geof said: “I like examining old design and ideology in the light of the new, which is probably why many aspects of my work tap closely into the Steampunk movement. I was a physicist who had recently completed a PhD, but I always wanted to make comics and draw. After my first comic it all slowly went somewhere and the more I did comics the more I started to enjoy drawing Steampunk related artwork, which tied in to the physics side of things remarkably well.”

One of the original founders of the Leeds Steampunk Market, Doctor Geof is fascinated by military history and this is where he draws much of his inspiration for his work. His popularity is such that fans have even created the First Tea Company, an entirely non-military organisation which plays on Doctor Geof’s other love – tea.

Doctor Geof is a long-time fan of and exhibitor at MCM London Comic Con and MCM Expos around the country, known for his on-stand portraiture and dedication to many cups of tea. Doctor Geof and his award-winning Steampunk Literary Review can be found on Stand 481 in the heart of the Comic Village this May.

Movie News: New GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Footage Released!

Following on from the unveiling of the brand new (and might we add rather spectacular) poster yesterday, comes some more footage from Marvel Studios’ riskiest venture yet. Okay, so it’s one of those trailer for the trailer type deals, but it’s actually surprisingly generous. Check it out in the player below or exercise restraint and hold out until Monday for the full thing like a sensible person would do [Sod that! – Ed]. Either way, it’s looking like director James Gunn and his crew have knocked this out of the park…

Movie News: Eureka! Entertainment Announce Release of FAUST

Eureka! Entertainment Announce Faust

Eureka! Entertainment have announced the release of FAUST, the final German film by master filmmaker F. W. Murnau (NosferatuDer letzte MannSunriseTabu). Starring Emil Jannings as the devil Mephisto — Jannings being the unparalleled actor of ’20s and ’30s film (Der letzte MannThe Last CommandThe Blue Angel) – FAUSTfeatures an extravaganza of special effects that have never been matched in silent or talking film.  FAUST will be released on Blu-ray in a Dual Format (Blu-ray & DVD) edition as part of Eureka’s award-winning the Masters of Cinema Series on 18 August 2014.

SYNOPSIS:

Murnau’s last German film features astonishing photography, magnificent art direction, and special effects which retain the power to amaze. Freed from the constraints of psychological narrative, Murnau’s mastery of cinematic technique places Faust, eine deutsche Volkssage [Faust: A German Folktale] at the pinnacle of the silent era, its barrage of visceral and apocryphal imagery contrasting with the simplicity and directness of its spiritual theme.

In collaboration with the screenwriter Hans Kyser, Murnau fused Faust’s script from German folk legend and the works of Goethe, Gounod, and Marlowe (particularly using the latter’s tone). Faust’s tale is a classic one of a man who sells his soul to the devil. In an attempt to gain control of the Earth, Mephisto (Emil Jannings) wagers an angel (Werner Fuetterer) that he can corrupt the soul of the elderly professor Faust (Gosta Ekman). As the Horsemen of the Apocalypse ride demonically through the sky, Mephisto towers over Faust’s hometown unleashing a plague that spreads amongst its inhabitants. Faust, unable to find a cure for the citizens who are dropping dead around him, renounces both God and science invoking the aid of Satan through a mysterious book that he chances across.

Murnau, a perfectionist, shot multiple takes of each scene with only prime takes making the final German domestic cut of Faust. Only the prints made for export outside Germany were seen until recent times; indeed this version was at one time thought to be the only version (it used discarded takes, errors, less impressive special effects, and human stand-ins for real animals). Using the nitrate duplicate negatives printed by UFA in 1926 (and an array of international sources) Murnau’s favoured domestic German version of Faust has now been meticulously reconstructed by Luciano Berriatua for Filmoteca Espanola from which this newly restored transfer is sourced. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to be able to present the original German domestic cut of Faust for the first time on Blu-ray in the UK.

FAUST will be released on Blu-ray & DVD on 18th August 2014.

TV News: Huge SAILOR MOON Re-Release Coming Soon

For many the unmistakable SAILOR MOON was an entry point into the strange and rewarding stylings of anime. While the uniform clad gals are a staple of the cosplay circuit, it hasn’t quite gotten the cult status it rightly deserves, but it’s now being made easily available for a whole new generation to enjoy.

Viz Media, a North American anime distributor, has announced that they’ve licensed the original series in all its glory. The license, which extends to streaming and digital alongside tradition home video, includes the entire 200 episode run, all three feature films, the tie-in specials and the first North American release of the final TV series, SAILOR MOON SAILOR STARS (remember that one folks?)

The series has been given an overhaul, left unedited in the original uncropped 4:3 aspect ratio, and while the original Japanese elements including names, stories and relationships have stayed the same, a new production of the uncut English dub has been recorded with a new voice cast.

Viz Media are set to release the franchise digitally complete with English subtitles this summer, followed by the English dub later in the year. The DVD and Blu-ray editions will be released in half-series sets in autumn.

The first four episodes will stream with English subtitles from Monday 19th, with two more episodes released every Monday thereafter, hereby known as Moon-day!

Movie News: Hugh Jackman Wants to Continue as Wolverine

Recent months have seen Hugh Jackman regularly talk about it being time for him to hang up the claws and step away from the Wolverine role. He even went as far as to say that after X-MEN: APOCALYPSE and a third solo Logan flick that he would more-or-less be done with Weapon X. Well, it appears he’s had a change of heart.

Speaking to IGN, it seems that the finished X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST has given Jackman new excitement. “At one point I said I was pretty sure [that a third Wolverine movie would be his last film]. But I’m less sure as it goes along. Because after seeing this movie, the whole thing feels fresher to me than ever.”

He added, “And during this movie… I don’t want to spoil anything, but it’s kind of like a clean slate. So who knows where it’s going to go. As long as I have the passion for it and the fans will have me.”

With expected appearances in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE and a third solo outing for his character, that would bring Jackman’s appearances as Wolverine to an impressive nine. Safe to say, it’ll be interesting to see where the Wolverine character is left at the end of X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST is released on Thursday, with X-MEN: APOCALYSE confirmed for a 27th May, 2016 release. At this stage, a third Wolverine movie is pencilled in for 3rd March, 2017.

Movie News: HALLOWEEN Series Getting Blu-ray Boxset Release

Fans of the HALLOWEEN series, get ready to rejoice. Whilst there’s been vanilla Blu-ray releases of most films in the series, the only standout release was last year’s 35th anniversary Blu-ray Steelbook edition of John Carpenter’s original HALLOWEEN (review here). Superbly remastered, that particular release also featured some nice new extras, such as following star Jamie Lee Curtis at a convention appearance. Now comes word that every HALLOWEEN movie to date are going to be released in a Blu-ray boxset.

To be released through Anchor Bay and Scream Factory, this impending release will be titled HALLOWEEN: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION and will an impressive 15 discs. Prepare to see Jamie Lee’s Laurie Strode running from The Shape for the first two movies, then take in the oft-derided HALLOWEEN III: SEASON OF THE WITCH, see Michael Myers return to hunt down niece Jamie Lloyd, see things go a little odd with HALLOWEEN VI: THE CURSE OF MICHAEL MYERS, see Laurie’s 20 year reunion with her brother, see Busta Rhymes bust out some kung fu on Michael (yes, really), see Zombie’s reimagining, and much, much more. Yes, there’s even the long-demanded producer’s cut of THE CURSE OF MICHAEL MYERS.

Set for a 23rd September release in the US, the official press release reads:

Last year, the horror classic “Halloween” celebrated 35 years of terror for those willing to partake in its vision of unrelenting horror. But that was only the beginning of the celebration. What producers Moustapha Akkad, Debra Hill and Irwin Yablans, writer/director John Carpenter and stars Jamie Lee Curtis & Donald Pleasence started in 1978 has transformed into one of the most durable, iconic – and copiously studied — horror film franchises ever created. Before Jason, before Freddy, and before Jigsaw, there was…Michael.  Over the years, audiences have lived and relived the terrors of Michael Myers through ten feature films, as well as various re-edits and alternate versions. Yet to date, the complete saga of Michael Myers could only be told in pieces, in individual DVD and Blu-ray releases, with the rights spread across multiple home entertainment studios.

Until now…

Through the unprecedented collaboration of rival home entertainment companies Anchor Bay Entertainment and Scream Factory – the leading purveyors in horror home entertainment –”Halloween: The Complete Collection” Blu-ray box sets arrive September 23rd.

For the legions of Halloween fans, the Deluxe Edition boasts 15 discs and contains all the “Halloween” feature films – “Halloween,” “Halloween II,” “Halloween III: Season of the Witch,” “Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers,” “Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers,” “Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers,” “Halloween H20,” “Halloween: Resurrection,” “Rob Zombie’s Halloween” and “Halloween II”.  The set includes the never before released producers cut of “Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers” as well as the ultra-rare network TV version of the original “Halloween,” the network TV version of “Halloween II,” plus the unrated versions of “Rob Zombie’s Halloween” and “Halloween II”. It is packed with hours of brand new bonus features, including new interviews with cast and crew from the entire franchise!

In response to years of fan feedback, the first “Halloween” will now also include the original mono audio track and the set will include both versions of the original “Halloween,” the original Blu-ray release and the recently remastered 35th Anniversary version with the mono track added back in! It also comes with a limited edition 40-page book written by Michael Gingold of Fangoria Magazine.  The collectible packaging will include a newly commissioned illustration on the outer case and each film will be in its own black Blu-ray case with the original theatrical one sheet as the key art. This deluxe set carries an SRP of $169.99.

“This compilation is the ultimate collector’s item for fans of the ‘Halloween’ films and a testament to all the wonderful talent that have worked on them,” remarked Malek Akkad, President of Trancas International Films and son of series producer Moustapha Akkad. “The partnership between Anchor Bay Entertainment and Scream Factory to present fans for the first time with all the Halloween films in one definitive package is a tribute to everyone – including my father – who made these films the terrifying classics they are today.”

The 10-disc Edition includes the original theatrical versions of the “Halloween” films and will include select bonus features. SRP is $129.99.

Artwork and bonus features to be announced in the next couple of months.

Here’s hoping that this fantastic-sounding boxset gets a UK release sooner rather than later. In the meantime there’s a new HALLOWEEN now in development, which is set to see Scout Taylor-Compton reprise the Laurie Strode role that she played in Zombie’s two films.
