Fans of Flight of the Conchords rejoice, for New Zealand’s fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo are to return on the big screen. Yes, that means a movie’s on the way. Hopefully.

After beginning life as a comedy band back in 1998, the pair of Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie soon began to make TV appearances before landing their own BBC audio series in 2004, which in turn led to their own HBO TV show in 2007. The does-exactly-as-it-says-on-the-tin Flight of the Conchords show ran for two seasons. Despite some world tours, it looked as if any hope of a third season was slowly fading away, although fans could now be getting a movie adventure instead.

Speaking to Indiewire about a possible film, Clement revealed, “We have actually started writing one. Who knows if it will ever be made, we’ve written some notes for some different film ideas. We’re not down to the stage where we’re going, ‘The film is going to be like this,’ it could be this, this, this, this, this.”

Whilst any Conchords movie is still in its infancy, in a separate interview with Consequence of Sound, Clement also revealed that a North American tour is definitely happening. “We were planning on doing it this summer, but I ended up doing The BFG instead,” he explained, “So it’s my fault we didn’t do it this time. But we are hoping to announce a tour. We’ll announce it before the end of the year, hopefully, and then some time next year get on the road… after we get some new guitar strings and that sort of thing.”

If we’re not getting some more Flight of the Conchords on TV screens, it’s at least good to know that a movie is hopefully in the works. And while we’re at it, any chance of expanding that North American tour to cover the UK? Much appreciated.

As ever, expect more on this as it develops.
