THE WEEKND to host Crunchryoll Anime Awards



Long time anime fan and Canadian singer/songwriter The Weeknd is to host the Crunchyroll Anime Awards in Tokyo on the 23rd of May.

The GRAMMY-winning artist references anime in his work. He will present the evening’s most prestigious honor: Anime of the Year.  Voting closed for 32 categories of the awards yesterday, and you can learn more about the awards via Anime Awards Official Website, Crunchyroll, and MyAnimeList.

The Weeknd shared the following about how anime has inspired his art and career: 

“When I was first introduced to anime, I was a child. Sailor Moon was one of my first crushes, Goku my first imaginary sparring partner, and “One More Time” by Daft Punk was a song and music video I couldn’t get out of my head.

But it wasn’t until my teenage years that one specific anime changed me forever and became part of the fabric of my early career: Samurai Champloo by Shinichirō Watanabe. It was the first time I experienced two of my favorite mediums—anime and hip hop—blending so seamlessly that it completely reshaped the way I watched film and listened to music.

The fusion of a samurai story told with auteur precision, paired with the sounds of Nujabes, Fat Jon, and Force of Nature was nothing short of transformative.

The Crunchyroll Anime Awards is the major anime awards.  Sony Music Solutions Inc., part of Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc., and Dempsey Productions will support Crunchyroll in the execution of the event. The event will be livestreamed for global audiences.

The official Street Fighter trailer is out, packed with video game-inspired fight sequences, cheesy dialogue, and retro camp.

Noah Centineo’s Ken Masters gets the most screentime, but the whole gang of Capcom’s Street Fighter II shows up: Andrew Koji as Ryu, Callina Liang as Chun-Li, Joe Anoa’i (Romain Reigns in WWE) as Akuma, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, Coddy Rhoes as Guile, Andrew Schulz as Dan Hibiki, Eric André as Don Sauvage, Vidyut Jammwal as Dhalsim, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Balrog, Jason Momoa as Blanka, Orville Peck as Vega, Olivier Richters as Zangief, Hirooki Goto as E. Honda, Rayna Vallandingham as Juli, Alexander Volkanovski as Joe, Kyle Mooney as Marvin, and Mel Jarnson as Cammy. Kitao Sakurai directs.

“Set in 1993, estranged Street Fighters Ryu and Ken Masters are thrown back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament: a brutal clash of fists, fate, and fury,” the logline reads. “But behind this battle royale lies a deadly conspiracy that forces them to face off against each other and the demons of their past. And if they don’t, it’s GAME OVER!”

Zach Cregger’s Next Project Is Sci-Fi Thriller THE FLOOD

Zach Cregger has lined up his next feature at Warner Bros.’ New Line division, an original sci-fi thriller titled The Flood. The filmmaker, who helmed last year’s acclaimed and Oscar-winning horror Weapons, will write and direct this next film.

The project reunites him with his Weapons producers Roy Lee and Miri Yoon from Vertigo Entertainment. Also producing is Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment.

Not much has been revealed about this project, aside from studio heads heaping praise on Cregger. “Zach is the rarest of filmmakers, fluent in every genre he touches, and we’re excited to continue our partnership,” said New Line president Richard Brener in a statement.

Zach Cregger stated, “I’m incredibly excited to continue my partnership with Mike, Pam, Richard, and the teams at Warner Bros. and New Line. They are true champions of bold creativity, united by a shared ambition to deliver unforgettable theatrical experiences for audiences. That’s the dream for any filmmaker.”

Until The Flood, Cregger’s next feature is Resident Evil, based on the hit video game franchise, and releasing in cinemas in September. He is also set to direct a Weapons prequel film, which would centre on the fan-favourite character of Aunt Gladys. The role earned Amy Madigan the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award.

Osgood Perkins And Nic Cage Reteam For LONGLEGS Follow-Up

Osgood Perkins is working on a new Longlegs feature film, a follow-up to the filmmaker’s 2024 mystery horror thriller, with Nicolas Cage returning as both star and producer. The sequel has found a new home at Paramount Pictures, departing from original distributor Neon. Perkins will write, direct, and produce.

Also producing are Brian Kavanaugh Jones of Range Media, Chris Ferguson from Phobos (which Ferguson and Perkins co-own), and Dave Caplan of C2.

Though any plot details are being kept tightly under lock and key, sources emphasise that this upcoming Longlegs film won’t be a sequel, but rather something set in the same universe.

Longlegs starred Maika Monroe as an FBI agent with an aptitude for clairvoyance, investigating a series of murder-suicides in Oregon that appear connected to a serial killer nicknamed Longlegs. The latter was played by Cage, typically unhinged and with a copious number of prosthetics.

Longlegs established Osgood Perkins as a name horror filmmaker and became the highest-grossing independent film of the past decade, as well as Neon’s highest-grossing domestic outing. Perkins went on to direct The Monkey and Keeper. His next project, which recently wrapped production, is The Young People and stars Nicole Kidman, Lola Tung, and Nico Parker.

INSIDIOUS: OUT OF THE FURTHER Drops Terrifying Trailer

Sony took to CinemaCon and debuted the trailer for their sixth film in the Insidious franchise, Insidious: Out of the Further.

Following 2023’s Insidious: The Red Door, Out of the Further returns with a new family and a new threat at the centre. Amelia Eve stars as Gemma, a young mother raising her daughter in her childhood home, who discovers she can travel into The Further, the purgatorial realm of lost souls that has been the linchpin of the Insidious universe. When something evil comes after her, Gemma discovers an ability that changes everything: she doesn’t just enter The Further, she can bring what lives there back to the real world. Once the demons realise her power, our world becomes their playground.

“I assure you this movie is the most terrifying in the franchise,” promised Sony Pictures president of domestic distribution, Adam Bergerman.

Jacob Chase directs and writes the entry, based on a story co-authored with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. Lin Shaye reprises her role as Elise Rainier, and Brandon Perea also stars. Jason Blum, Oren Peli, James Wan, and franchise creator Leigh Whannell serve as producers.

Noah Hawley To Remake Supernatural Horror TERRIFIED

Noah Hawley, the Emmy-winning creator, director, and writer behind Fargo and Alien: Earth, has set his next film project: a remake of the Argentinian supernatural horror Terrified for Warner Bros.

Hawley is set to direct and produce the feature, which is being developed alongside Demián Rugna, the writer-director of the Spanish-language original film, released as Aterrados. The film had a limited theatrical release in South America, but was released in the US, Canada, and the UK via Shudder.

The project will be a reimagining of the 2017 film, which follows a police officer and several paranormal researchers and investigators as they attempt to get to the bottom of supernatural occurrences shaking a Buenos Aires neighbourhood.

Hawley will produce under his banner, 26 Keys. His banner previously produced Alien: Earth, Fargo, and the FX series Legion. Fargo, based on the Coen Brothers film, has won seven Emmys from a total of 70 nominations over the course of its five seasons. Alien: Earth, meanwhile, is returning soon for its second season. Hawley also released his debut feature Lucy in the Sky with Fox Searchlight in 2019.

The Terrified remake does not yet have a cast attached, nor a release date, but stay tuned as we find out more!

Emilia Clarke Stars In WHEN DARKNESS LOVES US

Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke is starring in the upcoming horror film from director James Ashcroft, When Darkness Loves Us. Bleecker Street has acquired the project from The Rule of Jenny Pen‘s filmmaker and has set a 2027 cinema release date.

Also starring in the pic are Marlon Williams (Sweet Tooth), Victoria Pedretti (You, The Haunting of Hill House), and Natascha McElhone (The Truman Show).

When Darkness Loves Us follows a young woman (Clarke) who, after surviving fifteen years trapped in an underground cave system, returns to the surface to reclaim the family she believes to be hers, no matter the cost.

The script is co-written by Ashcroft, Hayley Sproull, and Eli Kent, and is based on Elizabeth Engstrom’s 1985 horror novella of the same name.

“My passion for Elizabeth Engstrom’s story remains boundless; what an absolute gift it has been bringing this work to the screen,” said Ashcroft. “With When Darkness Loves Us, Liz never lets us forget that the actions of her characters are by turns both tragic and monstrous — no matter how sympathetic they may be. But it’s their indelible humanity that can’t be so easily shaken off afterwards, and that’s when we find ourselves at home in the darkness with them.”

“The term ‘world-building’ is wildly overused, but the degree to which James and team have built a subterranean universe cannot be understated,” said Bleecker CEO Kent Sanderson. “This film is a true journey into the darkness, literally and figuratively, and we can’t wait to shock audiences worldwide with James’ singular vision.”

The Zuckerman Sisters To Write SCREAM 8

Lilla and Nora Zuckerman, better known as the Zuckerman sisters, are set to write the script for Scream 8. The picture is in development at Spyglass, so get ready for more Ghostface!

The Zuckerman sisters previously served as showrunners for season one of Peacock’s Poker Face, a comedy-drama series starring Natasha Lyonne. They have also worked as writers and executive producers on series including Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Fringe, and Suits. They had written the recently-cancelled Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, which was to be directed by Oscar-winning Chloé Zhao.

This follows Scream 7 making history earlier this year when it became the highest-grossing film in the franchise. The film saw franchise creator Kevin Williamson back in the director’s chair, and the return of original final girl Neve Campbell – who did not appear in Scream VI due to salary disputes – as her teenage daughter Tatum (Isabel May) became Ghostface’s latest target. The screenplay was co-written by Williamson and Guy Busick (Ready or Not films, Abigail).

Additional cast members included Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard, Anna Camp, Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Joel McHale, Mckenna Grace, Michelle Randolph, Ethan Embry, Mark Consuelos, Jimmy Tatro, Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, and Sam Rechner.

There’s no information as to who might direct Scream 8, though Williamson has said in an interview that he likely wouldn’t be returning as director for this upcoming instalment.

Slime Comes To Cinemas


Classic isekai That That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is coming to cinemas this May.
Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment will release the film, only in cinemas on 1st May, 2026.

That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime The Movie: Tears Of The Azure Sea sees Rimuru Tempest (the titular slime) dive into the deep sea to uncover a conspiracy and perhaps save the world.

The English Dub is an all-star cast, including  Allegra Clark as Yura,  Brittney Karbowski as Rimuru Tempest, the voice actress Ryan Reynolds as Gobta and Michelle Rojas as Shion.

The anime series That That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime  debuted in 2018. The world-wide hit follows Minami Satoru, an average 37-year-old who dies and is reincarnated as the most unremarkable creature imaginable—a slime.  Thanks to some cunning and some very useful allies, this humble low level creature becomes one of the most powerful creatures in the world.

Anime Teams Up With The Butcher For Fashion’s Sake


Anime streaming service Crunchyroll has teamed up with Argentinian professional footballer  Lisandro “The Butcher” Martínez to release a limited edition anime-inspired merch collection. The range includes ‘The Butcher T-Shirt’, which presents Lisandro in a way that he looks like he’s just stepped from the pages of Shōnen Jump.

“Something I love about this collaboration is that it allows me to show a different side of myself,” said Lisandro. “When you’re on the pitch, you get so caught up in the game and live it with such passion that, in a way, you end up transforming too—just like the anime characters. The nickname “The Butcher” was born from the fans, so I think it’s a great way for us to connect.”
