B.P.R.D. Confirmed for HELLBOY Reboot

As the Hellboy reboot gets set to start production next month, we’ve now had confirmation that the B.P.R.D. will indeed feature in this new outing for Big Red.

The news comes courtesy of Newsarama, with Mike Mignola confirming to the outlet that the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense will be a part of the picture. As Hellboy creator Mignola explained, “The B.P.R.D. figures into the movie. I don’t want to say who is and who isn’t in the movie. I think it’s fair to say, however, that the primary focus is Hellboy and not a B.P.R.D. team movie.”

The organisation has featured in the Hellboy comics throughout their run, and even had their own spinoff B.P.R.D. book. For those not familiar with this rag-tag group, they’re made up of the likes of pyrokinetic Elizabeth Sherman, the amphibious Abe Sapien, ectoplasmic medium Johann Kraus, and Dr. Kate Corrigan. In the previous two Hellboy movies, the B.P.R.D. and many of its key members – such as Selma Blair as Sherman, Doug Jones as Sapien, and Seth MacFarlane as Kraus – made appearances.

So far, Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen has David Harbour on board as Hellboy, Ian McShane as Professor Broom, and Milla Jovovich as the villainous Blood Queen. The Descent’s Neil Marshall is directing.

As ever, expect more on this as it continues to develop.

New Take on THE MUNSTERS is Alive!

Here at Moonbase Alpha, we’re huge fans of The Munsters. After the 2012 reboot for the property ultimately failed to amass to anything more than just the Mockingbird Lane TV movie, now it’s being reported that plans are again afoot to relaunch this much-loved favourite of yesteryear.

As per Deadline, NBC is again developing a reboot of The Munsters, with plans in place to create a new half-hour, single-camera sitcom that “follows members of an offbeat family who are determined to stay true to themselves but struggle to fit in in hipster Brooklyn.”

On scripting and executive producer duties is Odd Mom Out’s Jill Kargman, with Sethmaker Shoemeyer Productions also behind the series.

Believe it or not, despite being a massive favourite of so many of us, The Munsters originally only aired for just two seasons between 1964 and 1966. A full-colour revival would fellow with The Munsters Today from 1988 and 1991, although that series would struggle to ever garner the same affection as the original show. Similarly, several movies of varying quality and success would be released from 1966’s Munster, Go Home! to 1996’s The Munsters’ Scary Little Christmas. As mentioned, Bryan Fuller assembled quite the stellar cast for the planned 2012 reboot – Mockingbird Lane – with Jerry O’Connell as Herman Munster, Portia de Rossi as Lily Munster, and Eddie Izzard as Grandpa. Sadly, that series would be canned and just turned into a one-off TV movie.

As ever, expect more on this new incarnation of The Munsters as it continues to develop.

Krondon Cast as BLACK LIGHTNING’s ‘Big Bad’

With The CW’s Black Lightning gearing up to hit the small screen next year, the series has moved to cast the ‘big bad’ of its debut season.

As announced by the network themselves, rapper Marvin Jones III, aka Krondon, will be playing the villainous Tobias Whale.

On this news, executive producer Salim Akil enthused, “I was excited about Krondon when I saw his audition. He’s going to make a great Tobias. His authentic street sensibility along with an insightful intelligence is perfect for the Tobias character arc. Not to mention his regal physical bearing will be additive to making our show exciting and different.”

The official blurb on the character has him pegged as “an African-American man with albinism, Tobias Whale is the leader of Freeland’s most feared gang – The 100. But in the days before Black Lightning, Tobias was a politician, rising up the ranks of local government through corrupt and illegal means. That was until he was brought down by Alvin Pierce, Jefferson’s father. Enraged, Tobias murdered Alvin and was driven underground into exile. It’s here he found a place to rebuild, growing into the violent and methodical leader of The 100 as we find him today. But Black Lightning’s recent return has ignited Tobias’ desire to emerge from the shadows and face his biggest adversary, Jefferson Pierce, aka Black Lightning.”

Comic book-wise, Tobias Whale is a longstanding nemesis of Black Lightning, having actually debuted as far back as 1977’s Black Lightning #1.

The CW’s Black Lightning stars Cress Williams as the titular Jefferson Piece/Black Lightning, and so far the series has brought in Nafessa Williams, China Anne McClain, Christine Adams, Damon Gupton, and James Remar. The show is set to debut early next year.

Riz Ahmed in Talks to Join VENOM

With Sony currently working away on their Venom movie, the Eddie Brock-centric picture is in talks with Riz Ahmed for a significant role in the film.

As per Variety, the Rogue One actor is in negotiations to join Venom, with sources saying that the role in question is that of a popular Marvel character. Of course, with Carnage previously believed to be the villain of the piece, there’s already been speculation that Ahmed could well be getting set to play this most nefarious of maniacal bad guys.

On that front, though, the current word is that Ahmed’s role would not be Cletus Kasady, aka Carnage, although he was considered for that part before certain script changes took place. Then again, it’s also being reported that Carnage is indeed still to be featured in the film, so we’ll all just have to wait and see as this continues to develop.

With Tom Hardy on board to star and Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer to direct, Venom is currently booked in for an October 5th, 2018 release. As ever, expect more on this as we get it.

WESTWORLD Adds Several New Faces

With HBO’s Westworld series proving to be one of the most impressive shows in recent memory, we’re all eagerly awaiting the show’s 2018 return. And now, the series has moved to bring in some new cast additions ahead of its second season.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, the hugely popular show has brought in Vikings’ Gustaf Skarsgard, Tyrant’s Fares Fares and Good Girls Revolt’s Betty Gabriel. Skarsgard and Fares have landed series regular slots, while Gabriel’s role will be a recurring character.

To be more specific on these roles, the early word is that Skarsgard is playing Karl Strand, described as a “white-collar guy comfortable in the field,” and Fares is Antoine Costa, a “tech expert with an objective perspective”. As for Gabriel’s character, that is someone called Maling who will be doing their best to restore some semblance of order to the park following the chaotic conclusion of the show’s first season.

Very little is known on Westworld’s second year just yet bar that it will arrive at some point in Spring 2018. As ever, though, expect more on this mesmerising series as we get it.

Milla Jovovich Joins HELLBOY: RISE OF THE BLOOD QUEEN

With Neil Marshall now developing a Hellboy reboot, the film – titled Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen – has moved to cast its titular Queen.

As per Deadline, Milla Jovovich has landed the Blood Queen role. Jovovich, of course, is best known to genre fans for the likes of The Fifth Element and the Resident Evil franchise, and her casting seems like it could well be a perfect fit.

At this stage, it’s not been officially confirmed that the Blood Queen of the title is indeed the comic book Queen of Blood, aka Nimue. If that does prove to be the case, that’s a character who was resurrected to bring Hellboy to Gruagach. From there, she would ultimately end up dragging Hellboy to hell with her despite an all-mighty battle involving a horde of dead knights.

It was earlier this year that Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen was announced as a cinematic reboot for Big Red, and Stranger Things’ David Harbour was instantly announced as taking over the Hellboy mantle from Ron Perlman. Similarly, The Descent’s Neil Marshall was revealed to be taking over the director’s chair from Guillermo del Toro. In more recent weeks, American Gods’ Ian McShane has been brought in to play Professor Broom – the role played by John Hurt in del Toro’s two movies.

As ever, expect more on Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen as it continues to develop.

2019 Release Set for Chris Pratt’s COWBOY NINJA VIKING

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything on it, but now Universal’s Cowboy Ninja Viking has finally been given a release date.

The Chris Pratt-starring adaptation of the famed Image Comics property has been officially booked in for June 28th, 2019, which will see it go head-to-head with the upcoming sixth entry in the main Transformers franchise.

Pratt will be taking on the titular role of a new kind of assassin, an assassin who has the skills of three distinct personas: Cowboy Ninja Viking. The comic book property was created by AJ Lieberman and Riley Rossmo, and this big-screen adaptation has been in development for the past few years.

Despite now being given a release date, Cowboy Ninja Viking has yet to officially find a director. That said, it’s believed that an announcement will be made shortly on that front.

Horror Channel FrightFest Announce Rising Star Nominations

With this year’s Horror Channel FrightFest now just a mere few weeks away, the hugely popular event has moved to announce the nominations for the second Screen International Genre Rising Star Award.

Up for the award are Tom Paton, Dominic Bridges, Joanne Mitchell, Matthew Holness, and Danny Morgan, with the winner to be announced at FrightFest on Monday, August 28th. The winner of last year’s inaugural award, of course, was Alice Lowe, director of the fantastic Prevenge.

The official press release on each of the hopeful candidates can be found below:

Tom Paton has been shortlisted for his feature debut Redwood, for which he also wrote the screenplay. Playing the Cineworld Discovery screen on FrightFest opening night, the film follows a couple who disturb a nest of vampires while hiking in the woods. Paton is currently working on his follow-up, Black Site.

Dominic Bridges is in the running for his feature debut Freehold (previously titled Two Pigeons), in which he subverts the home invasion thriller to make a chilling point about the urban class divide. Bridges previously directed documentary short Underdog, and episodes of TV series Shelfstackers.

Joanne Mitchell has been shortlisted for her work as an actress and producer on Attack Of The Adult Babies, which sees unwitting two teenagers break into a country house where high-powered men enjoy dressing up as babies, as well as previous genre projects including Bait and Before Dawn.

Matthew Holness has been nominated for his successful migration from the small-screen, where projects including Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace and Free Agents, to shorts such as Smuch (which screened as part of Sky’s Halloween Comedy Shorts) and upcoming feature debut Possum. Possum stars Sean Harris as a disgraced childrens’ puppeteer who returns to his childhood home to confront his vicious stepfather.

Danny Morgan has been nominated for his work on horror comedy Double Date, directed by Benjamin Barfoot. Morgan wrote the screenplay and also stars as hapless 30-year-old virgin Jim, whose desire to find love leads him and best friend Alex (Michael Socha) into danger. Morgan has starred in TV shows like Ideal and features including On The Road, and has written several shorts. Double Date is his first feature screenplay.

Screen International editor Matt Mueller said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Horror Channel FrightFest again this year for the Genre Rising Star award. Screen is always eager to support exciting new UK talent and we look forward to announcing the winner at this year’s festival.”

FrightFest co-director Greg Day added: “Identifying and promoting new UK talent is very rewarding and we’re so pleased to continue to do this in partnership with the UK’s leading film industry publication”.

Horror Channel FrightFest takes place between August 24th and 28th.

Netflix Acquires Mark Millar’s MILLARWORLD

In some fantastic news, Mark Millar’s Millarworld has been acquired by Netflix.

A modern-day comic book favourite of many a genre fan, Millar is best known as the man behind huge big-name arcs such as Superman: Red Son, Civil War and Old Man Logan, while he’s also created amazing properties such as Wanted, Kick-Ass, The Secret Service, Nemesis, Starlight, Superior, Huck and far more than we could list here. In addition to that, of course, Millar has also been as a creative consultant for 20th Century Fox for the past few years, too.

The current plan is for this deal between Netflix and Millar to lead to a whole host of Millar’s famed Millarworld properties being brought to life for the on-demand streaming service. Movies, series, and kids’ shows are all currently planned for the varying portfolio of characters that Millarworld brings to the table.

At present, no specific details have been released regarding the deal, but Netflix’s Ted Sarandos enthused, “As creator and re-inventor of some of the most memorable stories and characters in recent history, ranging from Marvel’s The Avengers to Millarworld’s Kick-Ass, Kingsman, Wanted and Reborn franchises, Mark is as close as you can get to a modern day Stan Lee. We can’t wait to harness the creative power of Millarworld to Netflix and start a new era in global storytelling.”

For Millar’s part, he released at statement on his Millarworld forums – which can be found in full here – which said, “Warner Bros bought DC Comics in 1968. Disney bought Marvel in 2009. Today Netflix purchased Millarworld and I’m still blinking. This is only the third time in history a comic-book company purchase on this scale has ever happened. Over the years, Millarworld amassed twenty different franchises working with the world’s greatest artists and now Millarworld has been bought by the hottest, most exciting entertainment company on the planet. To say this is the best thing that ever happened in our professional lives would be an understatement.”

Millar runs Millarworld with his wife Lucy, and the pair are now going to enjoy a well-earned break from all things ‘work’ to spend the rest of the summer enjoying some family time with their children.

As ever, expect more on all of this as it continues to develop. We’re most certainly all kinds of excited at the potential to bring some truly mesmerising properties and characters to life, and here’s hoping this deal leads to some brilliant and must-see films and shows.
