GREMLINS 3 Could Kill Off Gizmo

It seems that ever since Gremlins 2: The New Batch was released in 1990, there’s been regular chatter of a third movie in the franchise. With original screenwriter Chris Columbus now having put together a screenplay for Gremlins 3, he’s been discussing a huge possibility for the property: killing off Gizmo!

The logic here, of course, is that the loveable Mogwai is the source of the Gremlins terrorizing the landscape of Joe Dante’s 1984 Gremlins and its follow-up. So, it only stands to reason that killing Gizmo would help to neutralize the problem at its source point.

When asked about killing off Gizmo, Columbus told /Film, “Very good observation. That comes up in the movie, certainly. I think it probably is a good idea, to be honest with you. Too many people are dying.”

Moving on to discuss the tone of his script for the third film, Columbus went on to explain how the aim is to return to the darker tone of the first movie. “I’m really proud of the script,” he enthused, “It is as twisted and dark as anything, so we’ll see. It’s always a budgetary conversation when we’re going to shoot it. I wanted to go back to the really twisted sensibility of the first movie. I found that was a very easy place for me to fall back into and start writing again, so hopefully we’ll see that movie soon.”

For those fearing a glitzy CGI-fest if and when Gremlins 3 does get made, fear not. As Columbus put it, “Without a doubt, minimal CGI. CGI will enable us to remove wires and make the puppeteers lives a little easier. It was brutal. It was like a marathon every night for those guys. In the bar scene alone there were eighteen, twenty people behind the bar. No one had any space to move. It was just hellish for those guys, so CGI will simplify that a little bit but it’s all puppets”

It goes without saying, whether a third Gremlins picture ever sees the light of day, we’ll have to wait and see. After all, the notion has been talked about for several decades now. At this stage, though, at least there’s a screenplay finished and ready to go should Warner Brothers decide to push forward with the threequel.

As ever, expect more on this as it continues to develop.{jcomments on}

ARROW Casts Kirk Acevedo as Richard Dragon

Many fans of the Green Arrow have been wondering when this no-good sort would turn up in The CW’s Arrow, and now it’s been confirmed that the villainous Richard Dragon will be a part of the Stephen Amell-starrer’s upcoming sixth season.

As per Deadline, 12 Monkeys, Fringe and Kingdom’s Kirk Acevedo has landed the role of Ricardo Diaz, aka Richard Dragon. The early blurb on the character reads, “A hardened ex-con recently released from prison for crimes he didn’t commit, Ricardo Diaz is bent on taking over Star City’s criminal underworld. A master in hand to hand combat, honed by years of life on the street, Diaz has yet to meet a foe he can’t take down.”

Comic book-wise, a more heroic take on the character called Richard Drakunovski debuted back in 1974’s Dragon’s Firsts before he was rejigged in October 2013 for Green Arrow #23. In his initial days as a hero, he was actually seen to be a mentor and trainer for the likes of Oracle, Huntress, The Question and even Bruce Wayne. Since DC’s New 52, though, Richard Dragon – in the shape of Ricardo Diaz Jr. – has been turned in to a villain most closely associated with the Emerald Archer.

It’s now known yet just how big of a role Richard Dragon will have to play in Arrow’s sixth season, and, in general, very little is known about the show’s new season bar this piece of casting and the news that Lost’s Michael Emerson has landed a major mystery role.

Arrow returns to US screens on October 12th, with a UK return to follow shortly after that date.{jcomments on}

David F. Sandberg Interested in ELM STREET Reboot

The director of Lights Out tackling the ominous presence of Freddy Krueger? That’s certainly something that would grab our attention!

David F. Sandberg is rapidly making a name for himself in the horror genre and beyond, having helmed the brilliant Lights Out and the in-cinemas-now Annabelle: Creation, not to mention being signed up to direct Warner Brothers’ Shazam! movie as part of the DC Extended Universe. While obviously nothing concrete, Sandberg has now been talking about some franchises that’d be interested in tackling.

Speaking on a Reddit thread about Annabelle: Creation, the director was asked about existing properties he’d like to work on. Sandberg replied, “I don’t know. I’ve been thinking about what fun franchises New Line has like A Nightmare on Elm Street and Critters. Might be fun if you took something like that in a different direction from previous installments. Like instead of remaking Nightmare you do some continuation of it in the same world kind of things.”

New Line Cinema, of course, is behind Annabelle and the entire shared Conjuring-verse as a whole. And interestingly, not only is New Line famously ‘the house that Freddy built’, but they’ve actually got a new Nightmare movie in the early stages of development right now.

Following the awful Jacke Earle Haley-starring A Nightmare on Elm Street remake, earlier this year saw it revealed that New Line had begun to work on another remake/reboot/reimagining for the franchise. Not only that, but David Leslie Johnson is currently penning the screenplay for the studio. For those not aware, Johnson wrote The Conjuring 2 and is also writing The Conjuring 3 – two movies that obviously exist in the same cinematic realm as Sandberg’s Annabelle: Creation. So, one of the key writing figures of this shared world writing a new A Nightmare on Elm Street? It would seem like a natural fit to drop in the director of Annabelle: Creation to the project – even more-so given how the eerie Diana from Sandberg’s Lights Out reminded many of Freddy Krueger at times.

Of course, take all of this with a pinch of salt for now until anything more official comes along. If you ask us, though, while we’re maybe not all that excited about the prospect of rehashing Freddy yet again, bringing in somebody like David F. Sandberg is certainly one way to raise out interest levels, particularly with the intriguing prospect of doing some sort of continuation from the Robert Englund-headlined movies but with a different spin.

As ever, expect more on all of this if and when it develops.

Anya Taylor-Joy in Talks for NOSFERATU Remake

Quickly making a name amongst genre fans for her turns in The Witch and Split, Anya Taylor-Joy is now in talks to star in the upcoming Nosferatu remake.

As per Variety, the actress is in negotiations to join the redo, which just so happens to have The Witch’s Robert Eggers on board to write and direct for Studio 8. At present, Taylor-Joy is working on Josh Boone’s X-Men spinoff picture, New Mutants, and she’s also signed up to return for the Split (and Unbreakable) sequel, Glass, but after that it looks like she may well end up tackling Nosferatu’s feared blood-sucker.

In terms of movies, Nosferatu famously began life back as a silent movie in 1922. Focussing on the vampiric Count Orlok of Transylvania, the loose adaptation of Bram Stoker’s famed Dracula saw the Count looking to buy a house in Germany before he quickly became obsessed with the estate agent’s other half. Whilst F.W. Murnau’s 1922 movie is revered as an all-time classic by many, so too is Werner Herzog’s mesmerising 1979 Nosferatu the Vampyre. As such, Eggers certainly has a lot to live up to. If The Witch is anything to go by, though, this is certainly a talented fella, and so here’s hoping he can do something special with this upcoming redo.

As ever, expect more on this as it continues to develop.

Barbara Hershey Joins THE X-FILES

Ahead of The X-Files returning for its eleventh season, the show has moved to bring in a longtime genre favourite in the form of Barbara Hershey.

Deadline broke the news, with Hersey to play the recurring role of Erika Price, described as “a powerful figure who represents a mysterious organisation.” Hersey is familiar to many genre fans for her starring role in 1982’s The Entity. Other notable credits including Black Swan, Once Upon a Time and the frankly-awful Damien, and more impressively the actress was nominated for an Oscar for 1997’s The Portrait of a Lady and won an Emmy for A Killing in a Small Town.

Already confirmed for Season 11 of The X-Files are Gillian Anderson, David Duchovny and Mitch Pileggi. The series is set to return to screens at a to-be-confirmed 2018 date.

David Tennant Returning for JESSICA JONES’ Second Season

One of the hands-down best elements of Marvel’s Netflix-exclusive shows to date has been the terrifying, twisted Kilgrave, as played by David Tennant in Marvel’s Jessica Jones. And so, it’s great to hear that this villainous sort will be back for the second season of Jessica’s solo series.

As per EW, Tennant will be back as Kilgrave for next year’s Season 2 of Marvel’s Jessica Jones. Given how the show’s debut year ended for the rogue, it should prove interesting to see just how the powers-that-be go about bringing Kilgrave back. Of course, it could well be flashbacks, mind tricks or hallucinations that have Jessica seeing the no-good sort who had tormented her for so long.

The second season of Marvel’s Jessica Jones will arrive on Netflix at a to-be-confirmed 2018 date, but before that you can see Krysten Ritter’s Jessica teaming up with Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist when Marvel’s The Defenders lands on Netflix this Friday.

Release Date Set for ‘SILVER AND BLACK’

Following the news earlier this year that Sony Pictures were developing Venom, the studio quickly moved to announce a Silver Sable and Black Cat team-up picture. And now, that film – titled simply Silver and Black – has been given an official release date.

As per Sony, Silver and Black has been booked in for a February 8th, 2019 release; a date that will see it open against The LEGO Movie 2. At this stage, there’s been no casting news whatsoever, but we do know that The Secret Life of Bees’ Gina Prince-Bythewood is on directing duties, with a script in place from Thor: The Dark World’s Chris Yost. The plan is for production to begin later this year.

For those not familiar with Black Cat and Silver Sable, both characters have existed in the Marvel comic book world for over 30 years now. Felicia Hardy, aka Black Cat, debuted in 1979 and is essentially Marvel’s spin on Catwoman. A cat burglar who can bring bad luck to people, this villain-cum-antihero has also been romantically involved with Peter Parker at times over the years. Where Silver Sable is concerned, she made her bow back in 1985 and is a badass mercenary who’s behind the Silver Sable International firm. As the leader of the Wild Pack, she has come into the crosshairs of Spidey and the greater Marvel world at times, and is another who just about verges on the right side of the game when it comes to heroes and villains.

As for the aforementioned Venom, that film has Tom Hardy in the titular role, with Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer to direct for an October 2018 release. Both Venom and Silver and Black will exist in the shared cinematic universe; a universe that is different from the Marvel Cinematic Universe but that may well end up having Tom Holland’s Spider-Man dropped into it down the line. Elsewhere, there’s currently talks of solo movies for both Mysterio and Kraven the Hunter in this same cinematic realm.

New TERMINATOR to Explain Why the T-800 Looks Like Arnolrd

When it comes to the Terminator franchise, have you ever asked yourself just why the famed T-800 looks like Arnold Schwarzenegger? No? Us neither. Regardless, it looks as if we’re going to find out the answer to that question when Jim Cameron regains control of the property.

By this point, you’ll likely be well aware that the rights for the Terminator franchise are getting set to return to series creator Cameron, and the current loose  plan is for him to develop a new trilogy of films. Now, speaking to TheArnoldFans during a Q&A session, the legendary director has explained that we’re going to get an origin of sorts as to just why the T-800 looks like Das Arnold.

As Cameron put it, “You’ve got to ask yourself, ‘Why did they make these characters look and sound like Arnold?’ There has to be a reason. So yeah, it has flashed through my mind that there has to have been a prototype. There has to have been a guy who’s DNA was harvested from – that they grew the organic outer layer that they grew the Terminator from… and that presumably was a real person at some point. Now, the question is, ‘Did that person have some sort of meaning to Skynet on why these chose that one?’ Or was it like a whole rack of Terminators and the one that happened to be the Arnold model just happened to be closest to the door going out to the time displacement centre and all the others looked different? I’ve asked myself these questions but it’s never been resolved. So stay tuned! We’re talking pretty seriously now about doing some new Terminator films or possibly a trilogy and you’ll just have to see what surfaces in those.”

After that, of course, we’re sure future films will look at why the T-1000 looks like Robert Patrick, why the T-X looks like Kirstanna Loken, why the T-5000 looks like the Eleventh Doctor, and just really what was all of that bollocks with Sam Worthington…

We jest, but stranger things have happened.

Also, there was a scene filmed for Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines that basically covered all of what Cameron discussed there. That sequence would ultimately be cut from the movie, though.

At present, as per Schwarzenegger, the plan is to get to work on the next Terminator movie in March 2018, with the rights officially returning to Cameron in 2019. While the current plan has Deadpool’s Tim Miller to direct the next entry in the franchise, it’ll be James Cameron who’ll be pulling the strings and “godfathering” the series going forward.

Karl Urban in Talks for JUDGE DREDD: MEGA-CITY ONE

In some news that will be sure to brighten your weekend, Karl Urban is in talks to reprise the role of Judge Joseph Dredd for the upcoming Judge Dredd: Mega-City One TV series.

Speaking at the Star Trek Las Vegas convention, as per TrekMovie, Urban enthused, “I am in discussions with them about that. I told them that if they write the material and give Dredd something to do and given him a function, I will be there. I would love to.”

Added to this, series producer Jason Kingsley released a statement to IGN: “We have been in discussions with Karl about his possible involvement in Judge Dredd: Mega-City One for some time. These conversations continue but we’re keen, he’s keen – it’s just a case of us making sure this show is everything we want it to be. This needs to be done right – the fans deserve it. Our team is working hard on scripts for the first season, creating engaging multi-thread storylines, one of which will be Dredd’s but others which take us into the wider world of Mega-City One.”

Urban, of course, played the iconic Judge in 2012’s Dredd, and fans and even Urban himself have all been clamouring for a sequel to that mesmerising movie for the past five years. Obviously, we’re not getting a sequel any time soon still, but Judge Dredd: Mega-City One could prove an even better option given how the realm of television allows for far more delicate and multi-layered storytelling when done right. Earlier this year, there were rumblings that Urban was interested in reprising the Dredd role for Mega-City One, and now it seems that a return really could be a reality. Now we all just needs to get anything crossable crossed!

For Mega-City One, early plot details for this new series reveal that it will (obviously!) be set in the future, with the East Coast of the United States having become a hive of criminal activity. As such, the action will focus on a team of Judges tasked with cleaning up the streets in the only way they know how – by serving as judge, jury and executioner.

Expect more on all of this as it develops.

JUSTICE LEAGUE Reshoots to Adjust Cyborg

We’ve known for a little while now that Justice League was undergoing some substantial reshoots, and now we’re hearing that part of the reason for these reshoots is to tweak the character of Cyborg.

Out of all of the heroes assembling for Justice League, Cyborg is easily the least well-known of the bunch, and even longtime comic book fans often find the character had to really get behind. If you ask us, ol’ Vic Stone will never be anything more than a Titan in our minds, but then that’s maybe just because that’s what many of us grew up with. Either way, the character is certainly one of the weaker comic book JL members, and cinematically he’s somebody that needs to be handled carefully by Warner Brothers if casual moviegoers are to be expected to place him on the same level as Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash and Aquaman. Even more-so given that the studio still has plans for Cyborg to headline his own movie at some point down the line.

The news of these reshoots being done to tweak Cyborg came courtesy of an interview Joe Morton did with IGN. Morton, who plays Dr. Silas Stone, the father of Victor Stone and the creator of Cyborg, told the outlet, “I know that with Ray [Fisher], the young man who plays Victor, there were some adjustments that they made in terms of the tone of that character. I think what I heard was that there was a need from the studio to lighten up the film in a way, that the film felt too dark. I don’t know what that meant in terms of how it actually got translated of the reshoots but that’s what I heard. That’s what I thought some of the reshoots were about.”

At present, Joss Whedon is handling the reshoots due to director Zack Snyder taking a backseat following the tragic loss of his daughter. Despite these relatively extensive reshoots, Justice League is still booked in for a November 10th, 2017 release.
