Linda Hamilton Returning for New TERMINATOR Movie

In some rather huge news, Linda Hamilton is returning to the Terminator franchise for the upcoming sixth entry in the series.

If you remember, the rights to the franchise are soon set to return to James Cameron, and he’s already got Deadpool’s Tim Miller in place to direct a new Terminator effort that will see Arnold Schwarzenegger return as well as Cameron overseeing the production. And now, as well as series veterans Das Arnold and Cameron returning, Linda Hamilton will be back to reprise the Sarah Connor role that she played in Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

The news was revealed by Cameron and Miller before a 3D screening on T2, with Jim enthusing, “As meaningful as she was to gender and action stars everywhere back then, it’s going to make a huge statement to have that seasoned warrior that she’s become return. There are 50-year-old, 60-year-old guys out there killing bad guys, but there isn’t an example of that for women.”

In addition to this news, The Hollywood Reporter adds that this new film will actually serve as a direct sequel to Terminator 2, potentially ignoring the events of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, the god-awful Terminator: Salvation, and 2015’s Terminator Genisys. A new writers room has been put together, featuring David Goyer, Charles Eglee and The Sarah Connor Chronicles’ Josh Friedman.

The rights to the Terminator franchise will return to Cameron in 2019, and he’s already got plans for several more new entries in the iconic genre series.

As ever, expect more on all of this as it continues to develop.

Taika Waititi in Talks to Direct AKIRA

One of our favourites directors of the past few years has been Taika Waititi, and so it has us all kinds of intrigued and excited to hear that the New Zealander is in talks to helm Akira.

As per Deadline, Waititi is currently in negotiations with Warner Brothers to helm their upcoming live-action adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo’s famed anime. Previously, Get Out’s Jordan Peele was on board to direct, with Daredevil’s Marco J. Ramirez was also working on the script. Other names linked to the director’s chair have been Lights Out’s David F. Sandberg and Life’s Daniel Espinosa, although it now appears that Waititi – the genius creative mind behind such wonderful efforts as Eagle vs. Shark, Boy, What We Do in the Shadows, Hunt for the Wilderpeople and the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok – is the new frontrunner for the gig.

The last we’d heard was that the current plan was for Akira to be developed as a two-film affair, with the property itself beginning as a six-volume manga from Otomo before Otomo himself then developed an iconic 1988 anime.

For years new, the loose synopsis tied to this long-gestating new take on an old favourite has read: Set in a future city environment called New Manhattan, the sci-fi epic follows the leader of a bike gang who must save his best friend, who has been experimented on by the government causing him to develop, dangerous and destructive psychokinetic powers.

As ever, expect more on all of this as we continue to get it.

Lao Horror DEAREST SISTER Submitted for Academy Awards

Lao horror movie Dearest Sister has been selected as the country’s first ever submission for the Academy Awards’ Best Foreign Language Film category.

The sophomore feature of Mattie Do, Laos’ sole female and sole horror director, Dearest Sister (which we reviewed here) revolves around a poor country girl named Nok who travels to Laos’ capital city of Vientiane to look after her rich cousin Ana, whose eyesight is failing. She comes to realise that in the blurred spaces of her cousin’s deteriorating vision, Ana is able to perceive the spirits of the recently departed who begin imparting winning lottery numbers, which Nok then uses to fund her new materialistic and avaricious lifestyle.

The Academy Awards’ Best Foreign Language Film category has existed in its current form since 1956 and has been awarded annually since then. For those not familiar with the process, every country except the USA can submit one feature film for consideration each year, the only provisos being that the dialogue is in a language other than English and the movie in question is primarily a production of its submitting nation. After all entries have been received and screened for the selection committee, shortlist of nine is selected by ballot, and then from them the five official nominations. Should Dearest Sister be selected and go on to win, it would be only the twelfth time (out of 69) the award has gone to a film from a non-European nation, the sixth from an Asian nation, and the second from an Asian nation other than Japan.

Laos has not been producing films for long – Dearest Sister was only the thirteenth it ever made – but its selection shows the quality of films the nation is already creating, and should its submission be taken further it will also move horror movies a little further along the still unacceptably lengthy journey towards mainstream recognition.

We reached out to Mattie for a comment, but she was unavailable as her time is currently being spent running around in circles and flailing with jubilation while emitting a euphoric wail so high-pitched only her dog can hear it. However, had she responded she would have said something like:

“For anyone who makes film, I’m sure it’s common to want to make a film that could be submitted to the Oscars, but for someone like myself, it seemed like an unreachable goal. The way that I fell into filmmaking made being blindsided with the chance to submit to the Oscars a delirious combination of delight, shock and pride, as well as pressure to make something even better for my next films.

I really think it’ll impact Laos’ film industry positively – because if anything, it means that at least there is interest in our small and relatively unknown country, and this could really open the doors for others to become more interested in the stories that haven’t yet been told in Laos!”

HBO Orders Pilot for Damon Lindelof’s WATCHMEN

In some news that’s sure to put a smile on the face of many a genre fan, HBO has officially ordered a pilot for Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen series.

Variety broke the news, with HBO also having committed to additional backup scripts as well as said pilot. Lindelof, of course, will be familiar to genre fans for his work on the likes of Lost, The Leftovers, Prometheus and Star Trek Into Darkness.

Watchmen began life back in 1986 as a 12-issue miniseries, soon going on to become a hugely acclaimed classic and a tale regularly cited as one of the greatest comic book/graphic novel stories of all time. A big screen adaptation finally happened in 2009, with Zack Snyder directing a huge blockbuster starring the likes of Billy Crudup, Malin Akerman, Jackie Earle Haley, Matthew Goode, Patrick Wilson, Carla Gugino, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

The CW Developing New SABRINA Series

Much like The CW used Arrow to eventually spin-off to create a whole Arrowverse, the network is now expanding their Archie-verse(?).

Following the success and warm reception to Riverdale’s debut year, The CW, Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions are developing The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. The current word is that the new show will be a one-hour drama effort.

The early synopsis for the series reads:

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina reimagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. Tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, this adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature – half-witch, half-mortal – while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.

Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is on board to pen The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, with Lee Toland Krieger to direct and executive produce. At this stage, the show could arrive in time for the 2018-2019 season of television.

Previously, of course, Melissa Joan Hart famously played the titular character in the much-loved Sabrina the Teenage Witch series that ran from 1996 until 2003.

Expect more on all of this as it continues to develop. In the meantime, the second season of Riverdale is set to premiere in the US on October 11th, with an international return to follow a day later – including on Netflix here in the UK.

Celluloid Screams kicks off its ninth edition with the latest mind-bending feature from Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. Taking us further down the rabbit hole than ever before, this latest expedition into the unknown showcases the directors’ knack for innovative storytelling and subverting genre conventions. BORLEY RECTORY (with special guest director Ashley Thorpe) – 9.30pm

The tale of the haunting at Borley Rectory is a legendary one, which caught the imagination of the general public in the 1920s. Over six years in the making, Ashley Thorpe’s visually stunning tale of “the most haunted house in England” is unlike any horror film you’ve seen in recent memory. Combining live action, rotoscoping and digital animation techniques, Borley Rectory is a fascinating and enthralling experience that is as haunting as the events it depicts. Screening with LATCHED + CRESWICK (shorts)

68 KILL – Midnight

From director Trent Haaga, 68 Kill is a lurid black comedy which will take you on a murderous road trip; pure trailer-park trash with a sleazy punk rock edge, and plenty of violent shocks along the way. Screening with KISSES + MISTER POPULAR + BORN AGAIN (shorts).

SATURDAY 22 OCTOBER – 11 am.

I REMEMBER YOU 11.00am

Based on Yrsa Sigurdardottir’s best-selling novel, and directed by Óskar Thór Axelsson, this scandi-noir about supernatural occurrences in the remote Westfjords of Iceland is certain to send a shiver down your spine. Screening with THE MAN WHO CAUGHT A MERMAID + DRIP DROP (shorts)

HABIT – 1.40pm

Gritty and gruesome, director Simeon Halligan’s third feature is a blood-soaked tale delving deep into of the dark underbelly of Manchester, where animalistic violence and savagery rule [sounds like STARBURST HQ – Ed.] Screening with BON APPETIT + COUPLES NIGHT (shorts)

TRAGEDY GIRLS – 4.10pm

Meet Sadie and McKayla, aka the ‘Tragedy Girls’. Together, they run a website devoted to true crime. Their fascination with the subject is boundless, and the girls soon find they’re no longer satisfied with merely writing about violence, and decide to embark on a more ‘hands-on’ approach. Tragedy Girls is a gory and entertaining bubblegum chiller about exploitation in the digital age, friendship between sociopaths, and the dangers of heavy gym equipment. Screening with YOUR DATE IS HERE + MEOW (shorts)

INSIDE NO. 9 – A SPECIAL ANTHOLOGY SCREENING (with special guests Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton) – 7.00pm

As is only fitting given that this is their ninth edition, Celluloid Screams presents a special screening of Inside No. 9 – one of modern television’s true greats –  three episodes, handpicked by the show’s creators. (The exact details of which episodes you’ll see are under wraps…) Inside No. 9’s writers and creators, Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton introduce this special screening and take part in a Q&A afterward.

CELLULOID SCREAMS SECRET FILM – 9.45pm

The annual secret film returns for 2017… Following on from last year’s surprise screening of THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE, the Celluloid Screams team has selected another top secret film that we think you’ll really enjoy. As always, the film will be revealed mere moments before it begins, so settle in and prepare for a surprise… Screening with TEDDY BEARS PICNIC + THIRD WHEEL + CRAVE (shorts).

SHEFFIELD HALLAM UNIVERSITY MIDNIGHT GALA: SUSPIRIA (40th Anniversary restoration – The CultFilms tour of Suspiria 4K) Midnight

On the occasion of its 40th anniversary, Celluloid Screams brings Dario Argento’s masterpiece back to the big screen in its restored version. With a pulverising soundtrack by Italian prog-rock maestros Goblin and dazzling Technicolor visuals courtesy of Director of Photography Luciano Tovoli, Suspiria is an eye-popping assault on the senses, and its reputation as a cornerstone of European horror is thoroughly well deserved. Screening with BIRTHDAY + BELIAL’S DREAM (shorts).

SUNDAY 23 OCTOBER

TAG – 10.00am

Aboard a coach with her classmates on their way to summer camp, young Mitsuko’s world is shattered as she’s plunged into a horrific, gruesome situation. Lost, alone, and utterly terrified, she mysteriously stumbles into her life before the incident, but how exactly did she get there? Why doesn’t she recognise anyone? And where did all the men go? A mind-bending fantasy horror that will leave you questioning your own reality… Screening with ELDRITCH CODE + IT BEGAN WITHOUT WARNING (shorts)

MAYHEM – 12.00pm

In a cut-throat office environment full of uninhibited crazies out for themselves, one man must work his way up to the top, by any means necessary. If you’ve ever worked in a corporate setting or pondered the potential use of office equipment as a deadly weapon, Joe Lynch’s gleefully gory ode to office politics is made for you. Screening with TICKLE MONSTER + EARWORM + PARALYS (shorts)

M.F.A. – 2.10pm

Noelle (Francesca Eastwood) is a shy and withdrawn art student. She has a hard time fitting in with her peers, so she’s thrilled when she receives an invitation to a party from handsome classmate Luke. However, the evening takes a devastating turn when Noelle is brutally raped. With a mesmerising performance by Eastwood, this captivating revenge thriller tackles rape culture in modern society head-on with a fierce and unflinching intensity. Though it does contain scenes that some viewers may find upsetting, it deftly tackles the tough subject matter to shine a spotlight on a very real issue. Screening with SHORTCUT + UNDRESS ME (shorts)

HELLRAISER (30th Anniversary screening – with special guests Nicholas Vince & Geoff Portass)- 5.00pm

Celluloid Screams opens Lemarchand’s box to unleash Clive Barker’s horror classic once more… Nicholas Vince and special effects supervisor Geoff Portass discuss the production and legacy of Hellraiser in a Q&A after the film. Screening with WE SUMMONED A DEMON (short).

CREEP 2 (UK PREMIERE) – 7.30pm

The follow-up to 2014’s CREEP manages to be just as tense and darkly funny as its predecessor. Starting off with a similar premise to the first film, CREEP 2 soon morphs into an altogether different beast, utterly unpredictable and always heading in a different direction to the one you expect. Peachfuzz is back! Screening with CARAVAN + FLOW + DEAD HORSES (shorts)

CLOSING GALA: BETTER WATCH OUT – 10.00pm

The festive season is upon us, and in a quiet suburban neighbourhood, Ashley agrees to babysit for twelve-year-old Luke, an average kid whose parents are out for the evening. With his best friend Garrett along for moral support, Luke has lofty ambitions to prove to Ashley that he’s boyfriend material, but plans to confess his feelings go awry when the house comes under attack by unseen invaders. However, they soon discover that this is no ordinary home invasion…this vicious horror comedy is the closest thing to Home Alone meets Scream that we’ll probably ever get.

All screenings will be open to Celluloid Screams pass holders. There are a limited number of tickets available for individual films which can be purchased from the Showroom Box Office. For full details of the film programme please visit: www.celluloidscreams.co.uk.
