Release Date Set for IT Sequel

While it would’ve taken a flop of monumental proportions to stop the follow-up to Andy Muschietti’s IT from happening, said sequel has now been given an official release date.

Seemingly titled simply IT: Part 2 at this stage, the second part of Muschietti’s Stephen King adaptation will hit the silver screen on September 6th, 2019. Much like Muschietti will be back to direct, IT’s Gary Dauberman will be back to pen the screenplay.

For those unfamiliar with King’s source material or the 1990 two-part TV effort, the second part of IT will focus on the Losers Club as adults in the present day. Heading back to Derry, the group have to come together again to vanquish the threat of Pennywise once and for all.

At this stage, the adult Losers Club have yet to be cast, but expect a whole lot more on IT as we get it.

Kyle MacLachlan Joins Eli Roth’s Latest Movie

Eli Roth’s upcoming The House With a Clock in its Walls has brought in a new addition that will have genre fans grinning from ear to ear. Yes, as the title suggests, none other than Kyle MacLachlan has joined the film.

As per Deadline, the Twin Peaks favourite has been brought in to join Jack Black and Cate Blanchett in Roth’s adaptation of John Bellairs and Edward Gorey’s famed 1973 horror tale. In the movie, MacLachlan will play Isaac Izard, the creepy original owner of the titular house.

Roth is on directing duties here, with Eric Kripke penning the screenplay based on the original novel. The basic premise centres on a 10-year-old orphan who finds a whole world of hidden passageways, magic and, of course, danger in his uncle’s house.

As ever, expect more on The House With a Clock in its Walls as it continues to develop.

John Carpenter’s HALLOWEEN Returning to the Big Screen

While David Gordon Green and Danny McBride are currently working away on their new Halloween movie, John Carpenter’s original 1978 classic is heading back to select cinemas this Halloween.

This October, the restored and remastered release of this iconic horror effort will be heading to the big screen alongside an exclusive interview and retrospective from the legendary Carpenter himself. For those well versed in Haddonfield and ‘the night that he came home’, this restored and remastered effort is indeed the same as-crisp-as-an-Autumnal-leaf restoration that was overseen by original cinematographer Dead Cundey and featured on the 35th anniversary edition release of the film back in 2013.

On this special return for the Shape and his original cinematic outing, the official word reads: Introducing the film, this special bonus explores the history of the film and the indelible influence Halloween has had on not only the horror genre, but the entire film industry. Carpenter explains why the film is meant for the big screen, the influences that inspire his filmmaking and how Halloween became the highest grossing independent film of all time.

At present, showings of Halloween are set to take place in the US, UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia and Germany throughout October and even in to November. For a full listing of just which cinemas are screening this all-time classic, visit Specticast – and the good news is that if there’s not a showing in your area, you can request one and Specticast will get in touch with your local cinema.

Amy Jackson is SUPERGIRL’s Saturn Girl

As Supergirl get sets to return for its third season, the series has brought in a rather significant new addition.

Brought in as Imra Ardeen, aka Saturn Girl, is Bollywood star Amy Jackson. In the comic book realm, the telepath from the future is a member of the famed Legion of Super-Heroes who debuted way back in 1958’s Adventure Comics #247. In Supergirl, the official description of the character has her pegged as “a kind, smart, and strong-willed hero who uses her telekinetic ability to help those in need. She was born on Titan, one of Saturn’s moons, and arrives on Earth to help Supergirl battle one of her biggest threats”. The role is described as a recurring one, so expect Saturn Girl to have a fairly heft role to play during the upcoming third season.

Saturn Girl has previously appeared in live-action as played by Alexz Johnson in The CW’s much-loved Smallville. There, she was joined by fellow Legion of Super-Heroes members Cosmic Boy and Lightning Lad as they travelled back in time to help Tom Welling’s Clark Kent. In animation form, Saturn Girl has been voiced by fan favourite Melissa Joan Hart in Superman: The Animated Series and Justice League Unlimited, and then Kari Wahlgren took over the gig for the character’s appearances in Legion of Super-Heroes.

Amy Jackson joins fellow Supergirl new additions Adrian Pasdar as Morgan Edge, Carl Lumbly as M’yrnn J’onzz, Yael Grobglas as Psi, Emma Tremblay as Ruby, and Odette Annable as the nefarious DC Worldkiller Reign.

Supergirl returns to US screens on October 9th, with a UK return set to follow shortly after that date.

UNDERWORLD TV Series in Development

Following this year’s Underworld: Blood Wars, we’re now getting word that the franchise is making its way to the small screen.

As per Deadline, Underworld creator Len Wiseman is developing a TV series with Sony Television through his Sketch Films production company. Wiseman himself told the outlet, “The series will be a pretty big departure from the films. I don’t want to say it’s more adult, but it’s definitely less comic book in its tone and character.”

At this early stage, the show has yet to find a home, although Wiseman is hoping that the series can land on a premium cable channel or an on-demand digital service.

Headlined by Kate Beckinsale, the Underworld franchise began way back in 2003. As Beckinsale’s Selene found herself caught in the crossfire of a never-ending war between vampires and werewolves, the series expanded to include 2006’s Underworld: Evolution, 2009’s Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, 2012’s Underworld: Awakening, and this year’s Underworld: Blood Wars. Wiseman served as director on the first two entries, while he was then a producer on the following three.

As ever, expect more on this as we get it.

Details on Upcoming CW/DC Crossover Event

Over the past few years, The CW have loved to intertwine all of their DC shows both with appearances from certain heroes in other heroes’ series, or by having all of the shows come together in one huge crossover event. And now, we’ve finally been given some information on what to expect for this November’s crossover extravaganza.

If you remember, last year saw Arrow, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl smash together to give audiences a brilliant four-part adventure that saw the alien threat of the Dominators causing chaos for our heroes. This year, starting from November 27th, we’ll see another four-parter that has been titled Crisis on Earth-X.

The CW and Warner Bros. Television have revealed the news, with some Phil Jimenez-drawn artwork also released to showcase the event.

On this reveal, executive producers Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg said, “We conceived this year’s crossover to be evocative of the annual Justice League/Justice Society crossovers we grew up with and looked forward to as kids. Phil was the perfect choice to bring the comic book cover iteration of this idea to life. You can count on one hand the number of artists who could compellingly represent so many characters in a single image. Phil is one of them. And his design invokes the cover of Justice League #207, which was the 20th Annual JLA/JSA crossover. Our ten-year-old selves are in heaven.”

The early synopsis for this crossover reads:

With all of the heroes in town to celebrate Barry and Iris’ wedding, villains from Earth-X crash the festivities with a deadly agenda.

While we’ve yet to find out just which villains will be crashing said wedding, we do know of one new addition for the crossover. As per TVLine, Quantico’s Russell Tovey has been cast as Raymond Terrill, aka The Ray. As well as being a part of the crossover, Tovey will also headline the upcoming CW Seed animated series, Freedom Fights: The Ray.

The official description for The Ray reads, “Raymond ‘Ray’ Terrill was a reporter who discovered a group of government scientists working on a secret project to turn light into a weapon of mass destruction. But before he could report on his findings, the project head exposed Ray to a ‘genetic light bomb.’ The bomb failed to kill him and instead gifted Ray with light-based powers. With these abilities, Ray realised he could go beyond reporting on injustice – he could take action to help stop it. Calling himself The Ray, he was recruited by Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters to fight violence and oppression wherever it exists.”

In the comic book realm, Raymond Terrill was the second person to take on the moniker of The Ray, debuting in 1992’s The Ray #1. As well as being a huge part of the Freedom Fighters team, Terrill has also been a member of several other heroic teams, most notably the Justice League of America and Young Justice.

As mentioned, the Crisis on Earth-X crossover will begin during the November 27th Supergirl episode, and will then continue later that night with Arrow before wrapping up on November 28th with The Flash and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

Lex Luthor Cut from JUSTICE LEAGUE

In another shake up for the DC Extended Universe, it now appears as if Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor has been completely cut from this November’s Justice League.

Eisenberg, of course, played Lex in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice; a portrayal that got a largely negative response from both fans and critics alike. Instead of drawing up images of the classical depiction of Superman’s greatest nemesis, BvS ended up giving us a Luthor who was like an overenthusiastic child who’d dosed up on one too many Skittles. In fairness to Warner Brothers, casting Eisenberg as Lex was a bold move, albeit a risky one, that they, at least in some ways, should have been applauded for making. Yes, the casting was totally out of left field and had us all scratching our heads, but so too did the news that A Knight’s Tale and Brokeback Mountain’s Heath Ledger had signed on to play The Dark Knight’s Joker or, to go even further back, that Mr. Mom’s Michael Keaton had somehow bafflingly landed the role of the Caped Crusader in Tim Burton’s Batman. Regardless, while Eisenberg being cast as Luthor was certainly a daring move, unfortunately it ended up being pretty much a total dud. And now, with Joss Whedon having taken over Justice League, it seems that Lex is taking a back seat for that upcoming ensemble effort.

Initially, Eisenberg’s Luthor was pegged to return for Justice League, with most reports stating that he had actually shot several scenes for the film. Given how Steppenwolf is to be the ‘big bad’ of this picture – the same Steppenwolf who a Batman v Superman deleted scene saw Luthor engaging with – it seemed as if Lex would be there to tie things together and watch the action unravel. According to the usually reliable Batman-News, though, the latest cut of Justice League doesn’t feature Luthor.

Many will see this as a positive movie for the most part, and it again looks like it could well be a case of Whedon stamping his own identity on the picture. After Zack Snyder stepped away from Justice League earlier this year to deal with the tragic death of his daughter, Whedon was put in charge of some fairly hefty additional shoots and reshoots. Some of these were done to alter the tone of the film a tad, some were reportedly done to tweak the character of Ray Fisher’s Cyborg (you’ll always be a Titan to us, Vic!), and now it appears that these changes have ultimately led to Luthor being left on the cutting room floor.

Of course, the more control and say Joss Whedon has on anything within the genre community is largely seen as a plus, and this wouldn’t be the first time he’s made some similar changes to a huge superhero effort – with him previously cutting William Hurt’s General Ross from Avengers Assemble. Given how well thought of Whedon is, it should be interesting to see how Justice League turns out. It would seem harsh to judge him too much on this film due to how he took over what many had already labelled a sinking ship, but you can’t not think that his involvement can’t help but to make anything better. Similarly, for better or for worse, plenty of Justice League credit needs to go to Zack Snyder after he put so much work in to the film over the past few years.

Ultimately, we’ll all have to see how things play out when Justice League is released across the globe from November 15th (November 17th, for us Brits), but don’t be expecting Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor to be present when this coming together of some of DC’s greatest heroes lands on the silver screen.

UNBREAKABLE Names Returning for GLASS

With M. Night Shyamalan now working away on Glass – his Unbreakable and Split sequel – the film has moved to bring in two familiar faces.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, both Spencer Treat Clark and Charlayne Woodard have joined the follow-up to reprise their Unbreakable roles. In that 2000 movie, Clark played the son of Bruce Willis’ David Dunn, while Woodard was the mother of Samuel L. Jackson’s Elijah Price. The pair join a cast that currently features Willis, Jackson, James McAvoy, Anya Taylor-Joy and Sarah Paulson.

Glass will look to pick up the action following the conclusion of Split in which McAvoy’s Beast will be butting heads with Willis’ Dunn while Jackson’s Price lurks in the shadows.

At present, Glass is set for a January 18th, 2019 release.

FRIGHTFEST GUIDE TO MONSTERS Hits US Stores in October

Following the hugely successful FrightFest Guide to Exploitation Movies, Fab Press and the team behind the UK’s premiere horror film festival are set to release the Guide to Monster Movies in the US.

Written by Michael Gingold, the latest addition to The Dark Heart of Cinema series will hit US stores on October 18th, with an official book launch taking place on that day at Forbidden Planet in New York. The book is already available in the UK following its launch at this year’s Horror Channel FrightFest event. It can be purchased exclusively from Fab Press.

From the official press release:

In the book, celebrated writer, editor and critic Michael Gingold traces the history of the genre from the silent movies all the way through to the present day. From Universal Studios legends such as Frankenstein’s Monster and the Wolf Man, to the big bugs, atomic mutants and space invaders that terrorized the ’50s, to the kaiju of Japan and the ecological nightmares of the ’70s and ’80s, to the CG creatures and updated favourites of recent years — they’re all here.

Two hundred of the greatest creature features from across the globe are reviewed, with fascinating facts and critical analysis, all illustrated with a ghoulish gallery of remarkable monstrous imagery. Cult-favourite filmmaker Frank Henenlotter, the creator of some of the screen’s most idiosyncratic and bizarre beings, contributes a foreword.

A whole world and grisly galaxy of creatures;- great and small, spawned from space, the supernatural and strange science, the beginning of time, beneath the sea and beyond imagination, await in this book. Dare you confront the beasts within?
