Elisabeth Shue Joins THE BOYS

Elisabeth Shue

With Amazon’s adaptation of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s The Boys currently assembling its cast, now comes word that Elisabeth Shue is joining the series.

As revealed by Deadline, the Karate Kid, Back to the Future franchise, Leaving Las VegasHollow Man and CSI favourite has landed a to-be-revealed role in the hotly anticipated adaptation. Shue joins a cast that includes Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Erin Moriarty, Antony Starr, Karen Fukuhara and Jessie T. Usher.

For those not familiar with The Boys, the comic series ran from 2006 up until 2012, focussing on a group who keep superheroes in check when needed. With plenty of R-rated adult-driven action, the series soon became a favourite of many comic book fans, particularly for how it often gave skewed and alternative views on a whole host of superhero staples.

Supernatural’s Eric Kripke has created the series and will serve as showrunner, with Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen previously pegged to direct some episodes. Goldberg and Rogen, of course, having already brilliantly adapted Preacher for the small screen.

The Boys will premiere its eight-episode first season on Amazon Video next year.

Marvel’s ETERNALS Brings in Screenwriters

Marvel Eternals

Last month saw it revealed that Marvel Studios was planning an Eternals movie, and now comes word on who’ll be penning the picture.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, cousins Matthew and Ryan Firpo have been brought in to write the film. The Firpo duo are likely best known for writing the 2017 Black List favourite Ruin. That post-war drama has Gal Gadot on board to star, with Macbeth’s Justin Kurzel to direct.

Created by the iconic Jack Kirby back in 1976, the Eternals comic book title was based around a race of age-old humans created by the alien Celestials with the plan being for these humans to serve as Earth’s protectors against the nefarious Deviants. The big-screen Eternals will reportedly be based around the Sersi character who is an energy-manipulating being who is pretty much immortal.

Expect more on Eternals as it continues to develop as the MCU progresses further and further through the stars.

First Look at PREACHER’s Gran’ma

Preacher Gran'ma

While some genre favourites have recently been sadly cancelled – most notably The Exorcist and Lucifer – one show that is returning imminently is AMC’s stunning Preacher. And now, we’ve been given our first look at one of the new characters set to be involved in Preacher’s third season.

As some shiny new images have been released by AMC, the part of this that will grab the attention of longtime Preacher fans is the first glimpse of Betty Buckley as Jesse’s no-good Gran’ma. And when we say no-good, we really mean it.

The official blurb on the Gran’ma character has her pegged as “a spiritist with true powers who can cast spells and even bring back the dead (for a price). Pay the fee or pay with your soul to feed Gran’ma’s thirst for eternal youth. She is weathered, tough, and mean, but also intelligent beyond measure. She’s Jesse’s only living family and she loves him.

And while she does indeed love Jesse, that loves manifests itself in a strange, strange way.

Preacher Gran'ma Preacher Gran'ma Preacher Gran'ma

The third season of Preacher will see Jesse’s quest to find God taking him back home; somewhere that he’s been purposely avoiding since the show began. There, of course, our titular Preacher will find old friends, old enemies, and even older grudges.

Preacher premieres its third season on June 24th.

Lupita Nyong’o to Headline Jordan Peele’s US

Lupita Nyong'o

With Get Out’s Jordan Peele currently working on his next hotly anticipated horror, Us, now comes word on a huge name joining the cast.

As confirmed by the actress herself, Lupita Nyong’o has signed on to headline the picture. Having nabbed an Oscar for her role in 12 Years a Slave, Nyong’o has since gone on to play Maz Kanata in the recent Star Wars movies, not to mention playing Raksha in The Jungle Book and Nakia in Marvel’s Black Panther.

No major details are known about Us just yet, but we do know that the picture will focus on two couples, one black, one white. Nyong’o and Black Panther co-star Winston Duke are lined up to play one couple, while The Handmaid’s Tale’s Elisabeth Moss is up for one half of the other couple. However, both Duke and Moss have yet to officially sign on for the film.

At this stage, Us is set for a March 15th, 2019 release.

Two More Join IT: CHAPTER 2’s Losers Club

Andy Bean James Ransone IT: Chapter 2

Courtesy of Variety and Bloody DisgustingPower‘s Andy Bean and Sinister‘s James Ransone have joined the sequel as the adult versions of Stanley Uris and Eddie Kaspbrak, respectively. In last year’s IT, Stanley was played Wyatt Oleff, while Eddie was played by Jack Dylan Grazer.

Already on board for IT: Chapter 2 are Jessica Chastain as Beverly Marsh, Bill Hader as Richie Tozier, and James McAvoy as Bill Denbrough.

With Gary Dauberman working on the screenplay, the current plan is for IT: Chapter 2 to hit cinemas in September 2019. The action will pick up 27 years after the first movie, with the adult Loser Clubs returning to Derry to confront Pennywise one more time.

Alfred Getting His Own TV Series with PENNYWORTH

Alfred Pennyworth

As one DC closes, it appears another one opens.

Following the recent news that Gotham has been renewed for a fifth and (sadly) final season, now comes word that an Alfred prequel series is in development.

To be titled simply Pennyworth, the MGM-owned cable network Epix has picked the show up with a straight-to-series order for a ten-episode first season. Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller is developing the series, with the focus to be on Alfred’s origins as an SAS soldier who forms a secret company that eventually leads to him meeting Thomas Wayne. Sadly, Gotham’s Sean Pertwee will not be involved in the project.

In addition to Heller being involved as executive producer and writer on the series, Gotham’s Danny Cannon will similarly be involved in an executive producer capacity as well as directing the pilot.

Production will begin on Pennyworth later this year, with a premiere expected at some point in 2019.

As ever, expect more on this new show as it continues to develop.

Laura Vandervoort to Headline the Soskas’ RABID Remake

Laura Vandervoort

How in the blue hell has this one slipped under our radar? We’re blaming a far, far too long a weekend here at Moonbase Alpha. But we digress, as the headline suggests, Laura Vandervoort has been cast as the lead in the Soska Sisters’ upcoming Rabid remake.

Film Mode Entertainment broke the news over the weekend, with Vandervoort to play the lead role of Rose in the film. The Canadian actress is best known to genre fans for the likes of SmallvilleVBitten, Supergirl and last year’s Jigsaw, and is also just absolutely charming – much like those Twisted Twins themselves.

On this news, Film Mode’s Clay Epstein enthused, “This terrifying and brilliant script has already proven its market appeal and now, with the casting of Laura Vandervoort, we are another step closer to bringing Rabid to audiences worldwide. Vandervoort has built a loyal, international fanbase of both men and women, of all ages, and her addition the film will certainly entice buyers in Canners.”

Producer Michael Walker added, “We are thrilled to be working with Laura Vandervoort on Rabid, who is the perfect fit for the role of Rose. She is an incredibly versatile actress who is quick to take on characters in all genres, and effectively tackles every role she plays.”

Jen and Sylvia Soska have written the redo with John Serge, and the hugely popular Soskas will, of course, be on directing duties. In this new take on David Cronenberg’s iconic 1977 original, the film will this time focus on the action from the female perspective of Rose.

The early blurb on this new Rabid has the film pegged as:

Drawing influence from the original movie, the remake will follow Rose, a young woman who, after an accident leaves her scarred beyond recognition, undergoes a radical untested stem-cell treatment. While turning Rose into the belle of the ball, the experimental transformation comes at a price.

So, what’s really not to love? The Soskas? Genre fave Laura Vandervoort? The knowledge that Jen and Sylvia will be true to a beloved classic while putting their own unique spin on things? Consider us well and truly sold on this one!

Expect more on Rabid as we get it.

Netflix Orders GUILLERMO DEL TORO PRESENTS 10 AFTER MIDNIGHT

Guillermo del Toro

Guillermo del Toro is a genre name who has his fingers in more pies than most, and now you can add a Netflix horror anthology series to his CV.

As per Deadline, the on-demand streaming service has ordered the del Toro-created Guillermo del Toro Presents 10 After Midnight. The early word on the show has it pegged as “a collection of the Oscar-winning filmmaker’s personally curated stories, described both as equally sophisticated and horrific.” Consider us sold.

The series has been created by del Toro, and he’ll also write and direct certain episodes. For the non-GDT written or directed episodes, del Toro will be handpicking a team of horror writers and new filmmakers to be handling proceedings.

To many, Guillermo del Toro can rightly do no wrong, and thus any and all projects he’s involved in get excitement levels up for genre fans. And Guillermo del Toro Presents 10 After Midnight is no different.

As ever, expect more on this as we get it.
